Secretary-1 attends opening of Myanma Traditional Musical Instrument Exhibition

YANGON, 9 Aug - The opening of Myanma Traditional Musical Instrument Exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture took place at the multi-purpose hall of the National Museum on Pyay Road here this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, the mayor of Yangon, deputy ministers, ambassadors of foreign embassies in Yangon and officials, resident representatives of UN agencies, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, patrons and chairmen of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon, Myanmar Music Asiayon, Myanmar Artists and Artisans Asiayon, Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club, doyen writers, artistes, researchers, Myanmar musical experts, students of University of Culture (Yangon) and guests.

The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard to open the exhibition. The Secretary-1 and guests enjoyed the demonstrations in playing Myanmar traditional musical instruments presented by the Fine Arts Department, Mandalay Division , Mon State, Chin State, Rakhine State and University of Culture (Yangon). Afterwards, the Secretary-1 viewed the booths of musical instruments. Minister for Culture Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and officials conducted the Secretary-1 round the exhibition.

A total of 15 musical instruments were displayed at the central Myanma traditional orchestra booth; various ancient musical instruments at the reign of Myanmar kings at the Myanma musical instrument background booth; 21 instruments, at the bronze musical instrument booth; 30 instruments, at the string musical instruments booth; 19 instruments, at the booth of musical instruments made of leather; 61 instruments, at the wind instruments booth; 10 instruments, at the clappers booth; nine instruments, at the booth of old Myanmar musicians; and 35 instruments, at the booth of other musical instruments.

In the middle of the exhibition, grand and splendid Myanmar musical instruments - Rakhine traditional drum, Shan traditional drum, Kachin Manaw drum, Setalonpaing drum of Htanawt race made some 300 years ago, Mon traditional brass gong circle and bamboo xylophone with glass mosaic embedded in gilding - are displayed.

The exhibition stages folk musical performances of the ethnic races from the States and Divisions with Myanmar traditional orchestra as main programme, free of charge, from 10 am to 5 pm daily till 22 August.

At the exhibition, books on traditions and culture and books on Myanmar traditional musical instruments published by the Ministry of Culture are being sold.



Secretary-1 attends Meeting of City Housing Project Supervisory Committee

YANGON, 9 Aug - The meeting No (5/2003) of City Housing Project Supervisory Committee took place at the meeting hall of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction on Bogyoke Aung San Street here at 2.30 pm today, attended by Chairman of the City Housing Project Supervisory Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

It was also attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Soe Win, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe, ministers, the Yangon mayor, deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, members of the committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials.

First, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt made an address. He said that the Committee held the meeting regularly and is supervising measures for the City Housing Project. That is why tasks of City Housing Project are making progress with added momentum in Yangon City.

As is known to all, some Western countries imposed economic sactions on Myanmar with every intention of jeopardizing the national economy, of making Myanmar people to get into trouble and of wielding influence on Myanmar. The Union of Myanmar will never let its independence and sovereignty fall under the subjugation of other nations. This being so, efforts will be made in the interest of the State and the people based on unity and diligence, facing pressures and sanctions.

In accord with the noble and glorious objectives of serving the interests of the State and its people, it has already believed that every endeavour being made today will meet with success.

With this end in view, measures are to be taken speedily and strainghtforwardly in the interest of the people. Under the right leadership of the Government, mutual understanding between the government and the people has been forged and active participation of the people will be achieved.

The tasks of City Housing Project are being impelmented to see that the Yangon City possess the characteristics of a national capital, to enable the Yangonites to live with peace of mind and to enable the posterity to enjoy the high education, health and social standards.

If all private construction entrepreneurs who are engaged in the City Housing Project are making efforts based on those noble aims, tasks for the project will surely meet with success.

Therefore, all are to make concerted efforts speedily in successful implementation of the tasks of the City Housing Project.

Next, members of the committee and officials reported on matters relating to land and housing project and development tasks of the city sector-wise.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions on their reports.

After the meeting, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at the Water Treatment Plant construction project site in Thanlyetsun.

At the briefing hall, U Tun Than Tun, Head of Environmental Conservation and Sanitation Department of Yangon City Development Committee reported on facts about the plant, pre-engineering tasks and civil engineering tasks being carried out for construction of the plant, procedure of the construction work and production process of the plant with the use of skill model, charts and slide.

The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions and inspected round the construction site.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at Wadan Jetty. First, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than reported on upgrading of approach roads to the jetty for the development of the Lanmadaw river bank region and Botahtaung river bank region, arrangements for parking lots, upgrading of jetties and future plans, arrangements for upgrading of goods sheds and measures being undertaken for Yangon Port to be clean and pleasant. The commander and Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe gave supplementary reports.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions and inspected the upgrading of Wadan Jetty. The Secretary-1 and party left the jetty in the evening.

Secretary-1 attends opening of new school buildings of Nos 8 and 44 BEPSs in Shwepyitha Township

YANGON, 9 Aug - A new school building, constructed by the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development under the Ministry of Construction, was opened at the No 8 Basic Education Primary School in Shwepyitha Township, Yangon North District, this morning.

Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, responsible personnel of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, local authorities, social organizations, wellwishers, and officials, teachers and students.

The opening ceremony of the new school building took place in front of the school. Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung formally opened the new school building.

In his explanation of the purpose of constructing the school building, U Arnt Kyaw, Director-General of the DHSHD, said that Hlinethaya is undergoing development as the Government built bridges and designated industrial zones there. Likewise, the Government is also carrying out the tasks for the extension of Bayintnaung Road and the establishment of Shwepyitha and Thadukan industrial zones near the Shwepyitha Bridge, while Hlawga industrial zone is under planning stage.

The school opened today is located on No 4 Highway. In addition to Thadukan industrial zone, there emerged a university of computer studies, and departmental and private factories and industries. Therefore, the region is becoming busy day after day. Moreover, aluminium factories and tile factories are under construction at Thadukan industrial zone.

Given developing conditions at the strategic place like this, arrangements have been made to construct shops, foodstalls and groceries for venders. The school was built as there was no school near here.

The newly-built two-story school building is fully equipped with the altar, furniture, school facilities, and the supply of water and electricity. It also has its own compound.

Then, he expressed his thanks to wellwishers for their donation of cash to the welfare trust funds of the school, and to the Steel Stone Construction Group, which constructed the school building.

Next, Col Tin Tun, Deputy Director-General of the DHSHD handed over documents related to the school building to Acting Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department U Aye Myint.

Donations made to the school were K 500,000 each by U Than Myint (High Rise Construction), U Ohn Myint (Tosta Group Co Ltd), U Kyaw Aung (Benhuer Co Ltd), U Lun Sein and U Saw Lulu Htaw (Scansia Myanmar Co Ltd); K 300,000 each by U Yan Htaw (SMI Co Ltd) and U Than Lwin (Steel Stone Co Ltd); K 200,000 each by U Ye Min (Parami Construction) and U Aung Thein (Power House Co Ltd); K 100,000 each by U Aung Than (Aung Than Construction), Daw Aye Aye Thin (AYN Co), U Wai Lin (Tawwin Brewery), U Kyi Myint (Super Five Int'l Co Ltd), U Naing Moe (Shweme Co Ltd), U Kyaw Kyaw Oo and family, U Soe Myint and family, and U Kyaw Kyaw and family; 150 dozens exercise books worth K 100,000 by U Aik Yi (Yadana Theingi Co Ltd); and one 21" colour TV, one VCD and pedagogical VCDs by U Ohn Lwin (Proven Technology Industry Co Ltd).

Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted the donations.

Then, the Secretary-1 handed over K 4.8 million, donated to the school, to the school headmistress, who later spoke words of thanks for the donation of the school building.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung said that the ministry laid down the education plan in 1998. As a work programme to implement the plan, the lists of literacy rate were collected from the households in townships, villages and wards across the country. And organization works are being carried out to enable the school-going age children to go to school. As a result, the rate of school enrolment is increasing year on year - 91 percent in 1999, 91.5 in 2000, 92.5 in 2001 and 93.07 in 2002.

The period from 9 to 15 June was set to carry out for organization work for school enrolment of the school going age children. The task was implemented mainly in 144 townships out of all townships in the country, and the enrolment rate has increased compared with the previous year, he said.

Since 2000, post primary schools have been opened and there were 2,400 schools in 2002. About 1400 post primary schools were built this year and it accounts for 3,800 now.

Owing to the opening of more schools, a total of 40,007 basic education schools emerge in 2002-2003 academic year. As the school enrolment rate has increased in 2003-2004, more schools will be constructed, he added. In addition, he said, the emergence of more new schools is thanks to the contributions of the State, public and wellwishers.

Next, the deputy minister expressed thanks to the wellwishers who contributed to the construction of the new school buildings and the ceremony came to a close.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 viewed round the new school building of No 8 BEPS in Shwepyitha Township.

Then, Myanmar Education Committee Chairman Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt and committee members attended the opening of the new school building of No 44 BEPS in Shwepyitha Township.

Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein and Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung opened the new school building by cutting a ribbon.

Director-General of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw reported that the new school building is situated in the northernmost ward of Shwepyitha Township. Arrangements are under way to construct an industrial zone between the wood-based industrial zone and the ward. There was only one primary school near the ward and it was necessary to build a new school. Therefore, arrangements were made to construct a basic education high school. The three-storey new school building has 22 classrooms and one assembly hall. About 1,000 students can learn at the school. He then expressed thanks to the wellwishers who contributed to the construction of the school building and Aung Than Construction Group. Deputy Director-General of DHSHD Col Tin Tun handed over the documents related to the school building to No 3 Basic Education Department Acting Director-General U Aye Myint.

Then, the Secretary-1, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted K 3.5 million donated by wellwishers for No 44 BEPS.

The Secretary-1 handed over the donations to Headmistress Daw Mow Mow Than, who then spoke words of thanks.

Later, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung made a speech. He said the Ministry of Education is implementing the education promotion programmes. One of the working programmes of the 30-year long-term education plan launched in 2001-2002 academic year is ensuring to complete basic education for all citizens.

The school enrolment rate was 93.07 percent last year, and cent-per-cent rate has been achieved in 144 townships this year, he said.

The deputy minister then spoke words of thanks on behalf of the ministry.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the new school building of No 44 BEPS.

Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win tour Shan State (North)

YANGON, 9 Aug - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Soe Win and member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, together with Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Maung Maung Swe, ministers, deputy ministers and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Mabein in Shan State (North) on 5 August afternoon.

They were welcomed there by local authorities and officials. Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected the building of the basic education high school in Mabein. They met with departmental officials, service personnel, members of social organizations and townselders. At the meeting, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann delivered addresses. In his address, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann dealt with development achieved in the townships due to the efforts made by the government and collective participation of the people in the tasks. Lt-Gen Ye Myint presented cash assistance to Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Red Cross Society, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Sepain village BEPS and Sepain village monastic education school through officials. Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and party cordially greeted those present.

At the office of Mabein Township Peace and Development Council, the Secretary-2 and party met officials and townselders. Officials reported on measures being taken for development of education, health and economic sectors and the region. The Secretary-2 presented exercise books to the students of basic education schools and cash assistance to social organizations in the township. He spoke of the need for local people and service personnel to make collective and united endeavours for regional development.

Vice-Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win inspected Township People's Hospital and donated K 1 million to it. Afterwards, Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win inspected arrangements made for opening multimedia classrooms in Mabein BEHS and donated cash to the school. In the evening, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, the Secretary-2 and party proceeded to Momeik by helicopter and inspected soya bean plantations near the heliport.

Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Lt-Gen Ye Myint met officers and other ranks and their families at the local regiment.

The Secretary-2 and party headed for Momeik Town Hall and met with local authorities, departmental officials, service personnel, members of social organizations and townselders. Officials reported on the progress of the township and requirements. Regarding the report, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on efforts to be made in unison for development of Mabein and Momeik regions in Shan State (North), perpetuation of the Union, strengthening national solidarity and raising living standard under the leadership of the government.

Next, the Secretary-2 presented exercise books to the schools in the township and cash to Township MCWA and WCWA.

Afterwards, they inspected Momeik People's Hospital and comforted the patients. The Secretary-2 donated K 1.5 million to the hospital.

Then, they attended the offering of rice and edible oil to Pubbayon Monastery in the town. At the ceremony, Member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Pubbayon Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tejavamta administered the Five Precepts. The Secretary-2 and party presented offertories, rice and edible oil to the Sayadaws. Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, who accompanied the tour group, inspected Township Information and Public Relations Department and attended to the needs.

Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived at Mandalay in the evening. They were welcomed there by Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Chief Justice of Supreme Court (Mandalay) U Khin Maung Latt, Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Nay Win and officials. The Secretary-2 and party arrived Mogok in Mandalay Division, where they were welcomed by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials.

On 6 August morning, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Lt-Gen Ye Myint and officials inspected progress of Mandalay, agriculture and livestock breeding farms of the local battalions, and flower and vegetable plantations grown near Mandalay Moat.

In the afternoon, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party attended Waso robes offering ceremony at the Dhammayon of Nanmyo Hsutaungpyae Pagoda. The ceremony was graced by the presence of State Ovadacariya Sayadaws from the monasteries in Mandalay, members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and members of the Sangha. Also present on the occasion were departmental officials and guests.

State Ovadacariya Maha Withoddayon Taikthit Waso Monastery Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Joint-Shwekyin Sasanabaing Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agghiya invested the congregation with the Five Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann presented Waso robes and offertories to the Sayadaws. Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party also presented Waso robes and offertories to members of the Sangha. Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann donated cash to the Sayadaws through an official.

Chairman of Division Sangha Nayaka Committee (Sudhamma) Myadaungtaik Shwewahwin Monastery Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Sasanabhivamsa delivered a sermon. This was followed by sharing of merits gained for pious deeds.
The ceremony came to an end with three time recitation of Buddha Sasanam Ciram Titthatu.

In the evening, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived in Meiktila via Mandalay by helicopter.

On 6 August morning, the Secretary-2 and party arrived at Okpo Monastery in Myoma Ward and paid homage to member Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sunamda and members of the Sangha and presented offertories to them.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party arrived at Lin Yaung Chi Gems Mining Camp in Mogok, where In Charge of the camp Maj Kyaw Min explained the salient points of the camp.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected gems mined at the camp and mining process of the camp.

Next, they proceeded to the showroom of MG Ruby Co in Mogok and inspected gems and jewellery displayed on the ground floor.

On the first floor, Deputy Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Tun Latt and officials reported on the condition of sales of gems at the showroom.

In response to the report, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint gave a supplementary report.

Next, the Secretary-2 gave necessary instructions.

Later, the Secretary-2 and party attended the ceremony to donate textbooks and stationery to the orphanage held at Yadana Theiddi Parahita Missionary Kyaungtaik in Mogok.

First, the Secretary-2 extended greetings to the orphanage. Next, he paid homage to Presiding Sayadaw of the Kyaungtaik Saddam-majotika Dhaja Bhaddanta Nandima Siddhi and presented offertories to him.

The Secretary-2 then presented the textbooks and stationery for the orphanage.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party went to the coffee and tea plantations undertaken by Myanma Farm Enterprise. At the briefing hall, In Charge of the plantation U Hla Myint reported on efforts being made for cultivation of 100,000 acres of coffee in PyinOoLwin and Nawnghkio, extended cultivation of coffee and tea in Mogok Township, thriving of tea in model plantation and participation of national enterpreneurs in coffee and tea cultivation.

In response to the report, the Secretary-2 gave necessary instructions and inspected coffee and tea plantations.

Next, the Secretary-2 and party met with departmental officials, members of socail organizations, gem enter-preneurs and townselders of Mogok Township at Maniyadana Hall. At the meeting, an officer reported on the salient points of Mogok Township.

Next, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint reported on the salient points of gem mining work.

Next, a townselder reported on requirements for development of Mogok.

In response to the reports, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on the relationship between improvement of individual income and regional development, regional development and peace in the region, narrowing the gap between the rich and poor, bringing about harmonious development in all parts of the nation and arrangements being made for food sufficiency.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 presented cash assistance for the Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, the Township Working Committee for Women's Affairs and the Township War Veterans Organization to officials.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to No 1 Basic Education High School and inspected the multimedia classrooms. Next, they arrived at the Township People's Hospital, where they were welcomed by the Medical Superintendent and health staff.

First, they inspected the hospital.

Next, the cash donation ceremony for construction of the 100-bed hospital followed.

At the ceremony, Vice-Chairman of the National Health Committee Lt-Gen Soe Win gave instructions on the importance of public participation in nation-building tasks and expressed thanks for donations of the public for construction of the hospital.

Next, wellwisher U Ba Htay explained the purpose of donation of cash to the hospital. Next, the Secretary-2 accepted K 21.5 million by U Kan Hla-Daw Moe Moe and family, K 10 million by U Ba Htay-Daw Khin Hla Kyi and K 200,000 by U Kyaw Win for the hospital.

Next, the Secretary-2 greeted those present at the ceremony.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-2 and party arrived in Madaya, Mandalay Division by helicopter. They were welcomed there by member of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council U Kyin Lin and officials.

At the Bayin Naung Hall, the Secretary-2 met with the Chairman of the Township Peace and Development Council and members, departmental officials, members of socail organizations and townselders.

Chairman of Madaya Township Peace and Development Council U Mya Htay reported on administrative, economic and social affairs of the township and measures being taken for regional development.

Next, the Secretary-2 made a speech. He said that cooperation and coordination among departments in implementation of the community work is of paramount importance, adding departmental tasks cannot be carried out separately although they are separated according to departments. This being the case, regional administrative bodies were formed and assigned duties in order to effectively supervise the coordination and cooperation. Thus, administrative bodies at defferent levels are to make efforts for ensuring peace and stability in the region, development and unity, construction of good foundation for the future nation.

The long-term and short-term plans are to be laid down and implemented for national development. It is of rouse to cherish the nation with words. It is important to enlist the strength of the people and win their trust, realizing the noble goodwill and objectives of the State.

Progress already made in the nation today is the result of combined efforts of the people and the Government on self-reliant basis. Efforts will have to be made for further development based on progress already made.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win provided cash assistance to the Township MCWA and WCWA. Later, they went to Madaya BEHS, where they were welcomed by the township education officer U Khin Maung Kyi, the school headmaster U Aung Myint, teachers and students.

At the hall of the school, the Secretary-2 met with teachers and gave instructions. Next, he presented exercise books for students and cash assistance to buy computers needed for the school. The township education officer accepted the donations.

Later, the Secretary-2 arrived at the Township People's Hospital. Medical superintendent Dr Sai Kham Om, doctors and nurses welcomed them and conducted them round the hospital.

At the hall of the hospital, the Secretary-2 donated K 1.5 million to the medical trust funds of the hospital through the medical superintendent. Then, the Secretary-2 cordially met with patients and comforted them.

In the evening, the Secretary-2 and party flew to Meiktila, where they were welcomed by senior military officers of the local battalion and departmental officials. At Kandaw Mingala Hall of the town, the Secretary-2 met with local authorities and townselders and explained the endeavours to establish a peaceful, modern, developed nation, the need of the public to cooperate with local officials in unison, and the importance of regional administrative bodies and government employees. Then, he cordially greeted those present at the get-together.

Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win, Lt-Gen Ye Myint, and members of the entourage arrived back in Yangon from Meiktila by air on 7 August morning. 


Lt-Gen Maung Bo tours Mon State

YANGON, 9 Aug - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung, No 44 LID Commander Brig-Gen Min Aung Hlaing and officials, met with military officers and other ranks and their families at the assembly hall of Theinzayat Station in Kyaikhto Township on 2 August morning and discussed regional development work and extension of agriculture and livestock breeding. Lt-Gen Maung Bo inspected agricultural and livestock breeding tasks carried out by the battalions and units at Theinzayat Station, gave necessary instructions and fulfilled the needs.

Next, Lt-Gen Maung Bo inspected the post-primary school in Wadatgon Village and attended to the needs. On arrival at Seikphutaung Monastery, Seikphutaung Youth Development Parahita Geha of the Social Welfare Department in Kyaikhto Township, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party were welcomed by the students of the Geha. They then paid homage to Sayadaw of the Geha Bhaddanta Jotika.

At the ceremony to donate rice and cash to the Geha, Lt-Gen Maung Bo presented K 500,000 and Commander Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung 10 sacks of rice to the Sayadaw. After the ceremony, Lt-Gen Maung Bo cordially greeted the students, gave a speech and fulfilled the requirements. At the Parahita Geha, Sayada Bhaddanta Jotika, two other monks, one nun and 16 matriculated students are giving gratis education to 226 primary school students, 290 middle school students and 179 high school students.

Factories in Indagaw Industrial Zone inspected

YANGON, 9 Aug - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, together with Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials, arrived at Indagaw Industrial Zone of the Ministry of Industry-2 in Indagaw Region, Bago Division, this morning.

First, the minister inspected tractor engine factory of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries. Officials reported on test-running of the factory and production of tractor engines. The minister gave instructions.

Later, the minister inspected the melting workshop of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries and construction of aluminium string plant of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries and installation of machinery. The minister left instructions on timely completion of construction of factories, systematic maintenance of the machines and efficient use of electricity and fuel.



Minister inspects sub-printing press, TV relay station

YANGON, 9 Aug - Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and officials inspected printing of newspaper, storage of newsprint and printing press at Myanma Alin and Kyemon sub-printing press in Aungmyethasan Township in Mandalay on 6 August.

The minister met service personnel and gave instructions on discharging duties with full cetena, unity among the staff, minimizing of waste and loss, fire prevention measures and security. The minister proceeded to Sagaing and inspected TV relay station and met service personnel.

The minister came back to Mandalay and inspected Aungmyethasan Township Information and Public Relations Department Office, Masoyein, Myogonyaung, Winlight and Naypyidaw Cinemas. He gave instructions on renovation.

The minister inspected construction of sub-printing house (Upper Myanmar) of Printing and Publishing Enterprise and Mandalay District IPRD Office. The minister also met officials of Meiktila, Thazi, Wundwin and Mahlaing Township IPRD at Meiktila District IPRD Office.

Myanmar delegation arrives back from Philippines

YANGON, 9 Aug - The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue Maj-Gen Hla Tun arrived back here by air yesterday evening after attending the 7th Meeting of ASEAN Finance Ministers held in Makati of the Philippines from 6 to 7 August.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, heads of departments under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue and families.

At 8.30 am on 6 August, the 7th Meeting of ASEAN Finance Ministers was held at Peninsula Manila Hotel in Makati, the Philippines. Minister of Finance of the Philippines Jose Isidro N Camacho presided over the meeting. The Secretary-General of ASEAN presented ASEAN Economic Report. Minister for Finance and Revenue of Myanmar Maj-Gen Hla Tun reported on current condition and prospect of Myanmar economy. At 10.30 am, the Makati mayor extended greetings at the opening ceremony of the ASEAN Finance Ministers' Meeting. President of the Philippines made an opening speech.

Afterwards, the president and those present posed for a documentary photo. At the meeting, ASEAN Roadmap for Finance Integration was approved.

On 7 August, the 6th Meeting of ASEAN+3 was held. ADB Chairman Mr Tadao Chino reported on condition of east Asia economy. The finance ministers took part in the discussions.

Views on bilateral swap arrangements and funds for Asian loan contract were exchanged. Afterwards, the signing ceremony of Protocol Governing the Implementation of the ASEAN Harmonized Tariff Nomenclature and Agreement and Terms of Reference on the Establishment of ASEAN Finance Cooperation Fund was held.

Next, ASEAN Joint Ministerial Statement, ASEAN+3 Joint Ministerial Statement and Chairman's Statement on the Asia Bond Markets Initiative were released and a press conference was held.

On arrival in Manila on 6 August, the minister received President & Chief Executive Officer of Marubeni Co Ltd Mr Ryukichi Kawaguchi and party and discussed matters of mutual interest.

Vice-Chairman of Central Bank of Myanmar U Than Lwin, Director Daw Ohn Mar Sein and Assistant Director Capt Aung Myo Win also arrived back on the same flight.

Sri Lankan Health Minister and party arrive

YANGON, 9 Aug - Under the programme for cooperation of health works between the Union of Myanmar and Sri Lanka, a delegation led by Minister of Health of Sri Lanka Mr P Dayaratne arrived here by air this morning.

The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, directors-general, deputy directors general and officials of the departments under the Ministry of Health, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Myanmar Mr D M M Ranaraja, WHO Resident Representative Dr Agostino Borra and officials.The visiting Sri Lankan Health Minister and members, together with the Sri Lankan ambassador and officials of the Ministry of Health, visited Drug Elimination Museum at the corner of Hanthawady and Kyundaw Streets in Kamayut Township at 3 pm. Deputy Director Police Lt-Col Hse Maung and officials welcomed them and conducted then round the museum. Later, the visiting health minister signed in the visitors' book and left the museum.

Mongyai Sayadaw passes away

YANGON, 9 Aug - The Religious Affairs Department announced that State Ovadacariya Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Hoya Village Monastery in Mongyai Township, Lashio District, Shan State (North), Bhaddanta Jalinda, aged 77 and Vasa 58, passed away at 5.30 pm on 6 August, 9th Waxing of Wakhaung, 1364 ME.

UMFCCI Golf Tournament held

YANGON, 9 Aug - UMFCCI Golf Tournament 1, organized by the sport affairs committee of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, was held at Pan Hlaing Golf Resort at 6 am today.

Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, President of the federation U Win Myint, CEC members and executives participated in the tournament.

After the tournament, Vice-Presidents U Zaw Min Win and U Aung Lwin and General Secretary U Sein Win Hlaing presented prizes to the winners.


Drug

9.640 grams of heroin seized

YANGON, 9 Aug - A combined team comprising members of Local Intelligence Unit and Local Battalion and Lashio Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched Hilux with number plates (3 Ka/2571) driven by Thein Zaw from Tangyan to Pansan at Tar-kaw-ek check point on 23 July morning and seized Ma Yan Li Pang at Tayoak Ywathit, No 5 block, Tangyan Township with 24 heroin blocks weighing 8.640 grams inside the two ash trays.

In connection with the case, action was being taken against Thein Zaw, son of U Tin Myint of Tayoak Ywathit, Tangyan and Ma Yan Li Pang (a) Ma Li Li Win under Sections of 15/19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by No 1 Police Station of Lashio.
