YANGON, 2 Aug - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Soe Win, members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein and Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Kyi Min and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Myat Hein, Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Htay Oo, ministers, deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads, arrived in Ohnbin Village, Dedaye Township, by helicopter from Hinthada at 4 pm on 30 July.

They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein, Command Staff Colonel Col Tint Swe of South-West Command and local authorities.

On arrival at the site for construction of Pyapon River Bridge Project, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported to Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party on choice of the site for the bridge, starting of the construction works on 2 April 2003, progress of construction works and arrangements being made for timely completion of the bridge. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye gave necessary instructions and inspected the map showing the location of the bridge and the construction site.

Next, they arrived at Pyapon where they inspected construction of the approach structure of Pyapon Bridge on Pyapon Bank. Pyapon Bridge will link Ward 1 in Pyapon and Ohnbin Village in Dedaye Township. The bridge will be of steel frame and it will be 3,832 feet and six inches long and the motor-way will be 28 feet wide. On completion, local people can travel to Yangon through Bogale-Pyapon and Kyaiklat-Pyapon Road in connection with Dedaye-Kungyangon-Dalla Road via Pyapon Bridge.


On 31 July morning, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party attended the ceremony to donate rice to members of the Sangha in Pyapon and Pariyatti Monasteries at Yadana Theikdi Sasana Beikman. Chairman of Pyapon Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Saddhammajotika-dhaja Minkyaung Sayadaw and members of the Sangha, officials and local people attended the ceremony. Minkyaung Sayadaw Bhad-danta Visuta administered the Five Precepts.

Vice-Senior General Maung Aye donated eight requisites and rice to the Chairman Sayadaw. Next, the Secretary-2 and party donated eight requisites to the members of the Sangha. Member of State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Htanbin Kyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Maha Ganthavaçaka Pandita Bhaddanta Vepulla delivered a sermon. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party shared merits gained. After the ceremony, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party met with local authorities of Pyapon District, Pyapon and Bogale townships, departmental personnel and local people at Thiri Annawa Hall in the township.

Chairman of Pyapon District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Myint reported on economic development of the district, per capita income, cultivation matter, breeding of fish and prawn, industrial sector, rural development tasks being undertaken education, health and transportation matters.

Next, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha explained systematic implementation of short- and long-term plans for development of the State and prospects of Pyapon District in economic development.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win said that Pyapon District will make more and more progress with the emergence of new roads and bridges. Similarly, due to harmonious cooperation of the State, the Tatmadaw and the people, the State including Ayeyawady Division gains sustainable development in all the sectors.

Vice-Senior General Maung Aye cordially conversed with those present. Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye delivered an address.

He said that upholding Our Three Main National Causes, as national concern, all the people are to defend and safeguard the Union. In the process, the three development plans are being implemented for ensuring equitable development among the regions of the nation. He added that consequently the development of some cities in border areas has been on a par with that of the plain region.

Rural and urban areas have harmoniously developed State and Division-wise, and the people are leading a peaceful life, he noted. In the past, Pyapon, Bogalay and Kyaiklat regions lacked peace and stability. But, now, local residents of those regions have enjoyed fruitful results of peace and tranquillity. Previously, Pyapon District was difficult of access by land. Now, people can travel from Pyapon to Yangon City or Pathein by car in a short time.

With such better transport, the development momentum of the region's economic and social sectors is gaining. The officials concerned are thus to make concerted efforts effectively and thoroughly in order to speed up the progress, he urged. After designating the development regions, the government has established universities and colleges essential for building up a modern developed nation. Therefore, all are to collectively participate in the tasks for producing intellectuals and intelligentsia, on whom the state can rely.

In line with the market-oriented economic system, it is needed for the emergence of many national entrepreneurs. Therefore, efforts are to be make for emergence of more rice millers, paddy traders and fishery entrepreneurs from Pyapon District.

After the meeting, Member of Central Panel of Patrons of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Vice-Senior General Maung Aye inspected Pyapon District and Township USDA offices and met Ayeyawady Division USDA Secretary U Than Tun, Pyapon District USDA Secretary U Aye Kyaing, Township USDA Secretary U Hla Moe and executives and members.

Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party proceeded to Kyaiklat, where they were welcomed by member of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commissioner of Division General Administration Department U Than Win and local authorities. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye visited Kyaiklat Tilawka Marajin Buddha Image and made cash donations to it.

Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party attended the offering of rice to the monasteries in Kyaiklat held at the Sasana Beikman of the Buddha image. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Member of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Mangay Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indaka and members of the Sangha. Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Shankyaung Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pindola administered the Five Precepts. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye presented eight requisites and rice and the Secretary-2 and party, eight requisites to the Sayadaws. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pindola delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Then, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party viewed the progress of Kyaiklat. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye met with departmental officials, members of social organizations and townselders and at the office of Township Peace and Development Council and urged them to strive for further development of Kyaiklat.

They left Kyaiklat for Dedaye, where they were welcomed by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi and departmental officials. They attended the offering of rice to the monasteries in Dedaye held at Sasana Beikman of the town. At the ceremony, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye presented eight requisites and rice to Mayan Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vayama and the Secretary-2 and party, eight requisites to the Sayadaws. Afterwards, the sharing of merits followed.

At the office of Township Peace and Development Council, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye met with local authorities, departmental personnel and townsfolk. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye delivered a speech. In his speech, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye elaborated on efforts for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation, gradual development of Dedaye region owing to the prevalence of stability and law and order, and collective efforts for the State's development through the cooperation of the State, the people and the Tatmadaw.

Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party inspected the progress of Dedaye and the Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye). On arrival at Kungyangon in Yangon Division, they visited Maha Tilawka Hmanku Bronze Buddha Image. They attended the offering of rice to the monasteries in the town held at the prayer hall of the image. At the ceremony, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye offered eight requisites, rice and edible oil to Kawdun Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tejinda and the Secretary-2 and party, eight requisites to the Sayadaws.

At the office of Township Peace and Development Council, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye met with division level departmental officials, local authorities, members of social organizations and townselders.

At the meeting, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe reported on accomplishments on GDP of Yangon Division, and progress in cultivating monsoon paddy and carrying out tasks for greening 30-mile perimeter of Yangon City; and Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Hlaing, on cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, edible crops and beans and pulses. Regarding the reports, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye elaborated on assistance being rendered by the government for the development of the township, projects under implementation for equitable development of the states and divisions, and importance of region-wise tranquillity.

Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye viewed the paddy fields along Kungyangon-Kawhmu-Kanbe-Dalla Road. They arrived back at Yangon in the evening.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein and member of the Central Organizing Committee Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, met with members of WVOs of Pyapon District, and Pyapon, Bogalay and Kyaiklat Townships at the office of Pyapon District Peace and Development Council on 30 July evening. They gave necessary instructions and fulfilled their requirements.

Secretary-1 addresses work coordination meeting for organizing 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions

Some big nations superior in wealth and technology trying to inject their customs, traditions and social values into cultures of developing nations through modern media


YANGON, 2 Aug - The first work coordination meeting for organizing the 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions was held at the National Museum on Pyay Road here this morning, with an address by Patron of the Leading Committee for Organizing the 11th Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the Leading Committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe, ministers, the Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, members of the Leading Committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office. heads of department, doyen artistes, chairmen of the Work Committee for Organizing the 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions and Sub-Committees, chairmen of the Panel of Judges and officials.

In his address, the Secretary-1 said that Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions are held annually with the aims of preserving and uplift of the traditional and culture, of ensuring the spiritual development of among the youths to be able to cherish and preserve the traditional customs and culture and of enabling the Myanmar cultural arts to keep abreast with those of the world nations without harming own cultural heritage and national character. The competitions have entered its 11th Year including this year. It can be said that Myanmar is the only country in the world which has been holding the national level competitions annually with the participation of the entire national people in safeguarding and preserving the cultural arts, he noted.

Myanmar has the fine tradition of preserving and uplift of traditional arts and culture for years countable by the thousand.

Although Myanmar has been culturally dealing with neighbouring nations for years, it managed to preserve and enhance the national arts and culture without harming the national prestige and character.

Science and technology, information and communication technology are now making progress in the world Keeping pace with them, physical development is overwhelming the world.

It can be seen that cultural heritage and national character of most of the nations which have been flourishing for years are fading away and Western culture and customs are overwhelming and social values and ethics which have been preserved since time immemorial are deteriorating. But, Myanma traditional arts and culture are still in existence since Myanmar managed to preserve and safeguard its own national prestige and character.

In the international spheres, some big nations who are superior to wealth and technology are trying to inject their customs, traditions and social values into the cultures of developing nations through the most modern media. Most of the nations with high culture including eastern nations are placing emphasis on revitalization of their traditional culture while striving for flourishing of patriotic spirit and nationalism among their people. Progress has now been made in the nation in preserving traditional culture and strengthening the nationalistic spirit since Myanmar has been making constant efforts in preservation of traditional culture. Due to Myanma traditional cultural performing arts competitions, it is heartening to see the fine traditions of studying Myanma arts and culture among Myanmar youths, of emergence of performing arts who are preserving and enhancing genuine Myanma fine arts, of increasing Myanmar young women who preserve national prestige and culture. But, there are those who cherish and follow alien culture, character and social values. To this end, unscrupulous persons are persuading them, resorting to various ways and means. The government has to take action against those who are running business, using Myanmar young women. In the process, public participation is required. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to achieve greater success of Myanma traditional cultural performing arts competitions. Since Myanmar traditional cultural performing arts competitions are being uplifted year by year quantitatively and qualitatively, the competitions have been in a position to reflect Myanma traditional arts and culture.

However, officials and artistes are to make continuous efforts to promote the essence of the competitions. As regards promoting the standard of the competitions, arrangements have been made not only to preserve the standard of the previous year's competitions but also to include Donmin competition in this year's music competition.

Saddan Hsinmin drama is designated to include in drama competition. Out of Sudanu Drama, Mahothadha Drama, Maha Janaka Drama and Vidura Drama, the artistes are to discuss at this meeting the choice of a suitable one for professional level marionette competition.

As efforts are being made to hold the eleventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions on a grand scale with full national essence, all are to harmoniously try to realize the goal.

The competitors are to strive to display Myanmar traditional culture and highlighting Myanma traditions and officials and artistes are to supervise the competitions to ensure exhibiting true Myanma culture.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged officials to strive for the success of the eleventh Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions at a time when spiritual development of youths has been achieved and national prestige high thanks to the successful holding of Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions.

Afterwards, Chairman of the Leading Committee Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe reported on successful holding of the 10th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions, experience on the past competitions and arrangements being made for successful holding of the 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions.

Next, Chairman of the Sub-Committee Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Kyaw Win reported on formation of the Committees for Organizing 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions, designation of date, venue, level and subjects of competitions, choosing of dramas, prize distribution and approval of songs for the competitions.

Next, Patron of Leading Committee for Organizing the 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt made a speech. He said that no one can deny that the Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions are making progress year by year, adding it was obvious that Myanmar traditional culture is flourishing among the student youths.

But earnest efforts will have to be made in harmony for safeguarding and enhancing of traditional culture through the competitions that safeguard and enhance Myanmar traditional culture, activities for development of women and youth sectors and mass media since the Western culture is still infiltrating into Myanmar culture. Only then, will the infiltration of Western culture fade away.

Safeguarding and enhancing of Myanmar traditional culture is benefiting the nation and the people much as well as preservation of the culture, he stressed.

The Myanmar traditional cultural performing arts competitions are making progress owning to the combined efforts of departmental officials and doyen artistes, thereby contributing to turning out the outstanding youths who will become the brilliant artistes in future.

He expressed thanks to doyen artistes who contribute to their shares regardless of age and health for successful holding of the competitions and wished them to be able to participate in the coming Myanmar traditional performing arts competitions.

After the meeting, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt accepted K 1 million for organizing the 11th Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions presented by Chairman of Myanmar Music Asiayon Accordion U Ohn Kyaw.

Secretary-1 inspects construction of Myanmar Maritime University

YANGON, 2 Aug - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt accompanied by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the project site for construction of Myanmar Maritime University being undertaken by the Ministry of Transport in Thiliwa region, Thanlyin-Kyauktan region development zone, Thanlyin Township, at 4.15 pm today.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by the ministers, deputy ministers and departmental
heads.

At the briefing hall, Minister for transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on academic and administrative matters of the university and construction tasks.

Next, Rector of the university U Thein Tun reported on arrangements for greening of the university's environs.

Golden Flower Co Managing Director U Aung Htwe also presented reports on construction of the main building, Lecture rooms, teachers' recreation center and car parking.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions to officials on construction of the university meeting the set standard and growing of shady trees. The Secretary-1 then inspected the scale model of the university and construction of the main building and lecture halls.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party visited Kyauktan Pagoda in Kyauktan Township, where they were welcomed by chairmen of district and township Peace and Development Councils and members, departmental officials, members of the pagoda board of trustees and officials.

The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to the Buddha images at the pagoda. Then, the ceremony to donate cash towards the funds of the pagoda was held in the princint of the pagoda, and it was opened with the three-time recitation of Namo Tassa.

Next, the Secretary-1 paid homage to Kyaikkamauk Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nana and presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

Next, Managing Director of ACE Construction U Tint Hsan reported on renovation of the prayer hall of Kyaikkamauk Pagoda, Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Khin Zaw on arrangements for reconstruction of eastern stairway of the pagoda and Yangon Division Development Affairs Committee Director U Tin Soe on repair of entrance road to the pagoda.

Afterwards, the cash donation ceremony followed. Ministry of Transport donated K 300,000, Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs and Ministry of Hotels and Tourism K 300,000, 33 members of the board of directors of National Development Co Group Ltd K 10.1 million, Kyaikkamaut Monastery Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ñana and disciples K 5 million, Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa K 1 million, U Hla Htay and Daw Tin Nwe Oo of Hman Cho medical house K 1 million, U Maung Weik and family K 1 million, Daw Aye Myat Nwe (Bagan Hotel) K 500,000, U Ohn Myint (Htut Khaung Construction) K 500,000, Col Tin Hla and Daw Hla Myint and family K 200,000, and the Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council chairman, departments, Peace and Development Council chairmen of six wards in Kyauktan, Township Bus Line, Township water craft group, Township fisheries associations, (U Saw Bwa) and Daw Shwe Thein and family, Pyi Aung Yadana Co and Yayle Pagoda ferry co-operatives society and U Ann Sho Ti and Daw Ohn Kyin K 100,000 each totalling K 20.6 million. The Secretary-1 and the commander accepted the donations.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 inspected the all-round renovation works of the pagoda.


Secretary-1 attends coord meeting on upgrading project of Kandawgyi Garden and Zoological Gardens of Yangon City

YANGON, 2 Aug - A coordination meeting on the upgrading project of Kandawgyi Garden and Zoological Gardens of Yangon City was held at Agricultural Museum in Myepadetha Park in Bahan Township this afternoon, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were Chairman of Work Committee for Upgrading Kandawgyi Garden and Zoological Gardens of Yangon City Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe, ministers, the Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee mayor, deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads, members of the Work Committee and guests.

First, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe reported on tasks being carried out for the central symbol zone, the education zone, the recreation zone and the relaxation zone, drawing of the zone designs and future tasks.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi reported on tasks being carried out by designers for drawing detailed designs of the central symbol zone and the relaxation zone included in the project.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on improvement of the Agricultural Museum, Myepadetha Park, Nursery Market Festival and Vegetable Shops in Kandawgyi and Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein on arrangement for upgrading the Aquarium in Kandawgyi included in the education zone.

Minister Brig-Gen Thein Zaw briefed the Secretary-1 on improving of shops in Kandawgyi.

Next, Chairman of Myanmar Hoteliers Association U Khin Shwe reported on arrangements being made for installation of cable cars, upgrading of the flower garden and the exercise garden, public recreation and land preparations in the recreation zone.

Mayor U Ko Lay explained plans to be implemented on land preparation and greening tasks and Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint reported on inflow and outflow of water at Kandawgyi Lake and tasks to be done.

Managing Director U Win Aung of Wood Land Co Ltd reported on completion in drawing the master plan on upgrading of Kandawgyi Garden and Zoological Gardens, tasks to be undertaken in respective zones and drawing of zone designs.

Those present reported on land preparations, repair of roads and drains, installation of power lines, renovation of buildings, repair of the car parking and animal sheds.

After hearing reports, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt delivered an address. He said that upgrading of Kandawgyi Garden and Zoological Gardens in Yangon City are being implemented after forming work committees respectively. In addition, as the project is being implemented after designating four zones, organizations concerned are to make efforts for emergence of a modern garden based on existing natural resources. Plans are to be laid down not only for implementing the project but also for keeping it green and pleasant. Connecting the overpass between Kandawgyi Garden and Yangon Zoological Gardens, it is necessary to build the garden on a per with international level for public relaxation and recreation. After the meeting, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the site for construction of Water Palace Plaza in Bogyoke Aung San Park in Kandawgyi and gave necessary instructions to officials.

Before the meeting, the Secretary-1 heard reports on scale model of fence of the upgrading project, the model of timber walkway in the relaxation zone and species of trees in the zone and the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions.

YANGON, 2 Aug - Merit-sharing and Waso robes-offering ceremony of Majjhima Yaungchi Maha Dhamma Beikman of Majjhima Gonyi Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha in Ward-11, Tasetaung, Tha-kayta Township, was held at the Beikman this morning.

Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and presented offertories.

Present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidaja Maha Ratha Guru Dawei Sayadaw Bhaddanta Arcinda Bhivam-sa and member Sayadaws, Majjhima Gonyi Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha Sayadaw Dr Bhaddanta Kovidha (MA, PhD) and members of the Sangha, Chairman of Yan-gon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe, ministers, the Yangon mayor, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, members of district and township PDCs, wellwishers and lay persons. Staff Officer of the Religious Affairs Department U San Thin Hlaing acted as master of ceremonies. The ceremony was opened with the three-time recitation of Namo Tassa. The Secretary-1 and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. The Secretary-1, the commander, the ministers and the mayor accepted K 122,525,000 including K 50 million by a women disciple of Dr Bhaddanta Kovidha; K 15 million by Thiri Thudama Manijotadara U Sein Hla Win-Daw Phyu Phyu Khin; K 12.5 million by Director U Ye Tun Naing of Toetat Win Co-Daw Laming Nge; K 10. million by U Thein Han-Daw Hun Chon of Sanyo Titles; K 3 million by Daw Shu Khin and family; K 2.5 million by U Soe Thein-Daw Thwin Thwin Myint; and K 29.525 million by other wellwishers.

Next, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Tiloka Bhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. Then, the ceremony concluded with three-time recitation of Buddha Sasanam Ciramtithatu, and the Secretary-1 performed rituals of gold and silver showers to mark the successful ceremony. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 inspected the paving of Yadana Road, 3,000 feet long and 44 feet wide, linking the approach road of Thanlyin Bridge and Shukhinta circular road.

Support training course to mark World Breastfeeding Week opened

YANGON, 2 Aug - A ceremony to open the support training course in commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, co-organized by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and UNICEF, was held at the hall of MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Present were Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint, Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo, President of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Vice-Presidents Dr Kyi Soe and Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint, CEC members, Patron of Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for MCWA Daw Khin Thet Htay, officials of WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and UNAIDS, officials of the Ministry of Health and trainees.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Dr Kyaw Myint said Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association has been taking part in the breastfeeding activities since establishment of the association. Health educative talks on breastfeeding are given to pregnant mothers at delivery rooms of township MCWAs and they are trained to start breastfeeding in bed after giving birth. The motto of this year is "Breastfeeding in a Globalized World for Peace and Justice".

He said he was proud that MMCWA could launch World Breastfeeding Week activities using various ways. Next, he called on those present to disseminate information on health education on breastfeeding to the public using more effective ways and to contribute towards turning out of intellectual new generation.

Next, UNICEF Pre-sident Representative Ms Carroll Long gave a speech.

Next, the minister and guests viewed documentary photos on breastfeeding displayed at the hall. Later, Dr Daw Htay Nwe, Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint and Dr Nwe Oo gave lectures on systematic breastfeeding work.

Afterwards, the President of MMCWA presented completion certificates to the trainees.



Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport meets

YANGON, 2 Aug - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe delivered an address at the coordination meeting of Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport at the hall of Yangon Command Headquarters yesterday.

The commander said that Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport was formed to supervise running of car, train, ship and plane for convenient travelling of people to States and Divisions from Yangon City daily. He invited the members to discuss requirements of the tasks and to give suggestions.

Members of the Supervisory Committee took part in the discussions.

Later, the commander said that as officials supervise the drivers and conductors to make then abide by traffic rules so as to avoid accidents, highway buses are also to be supervised for safety. In addition, action is to be taken against departmental vehicles, private cars, taxis, buses, trishaws and bicycles which violate traffic rules and disciplines. Next, the commander attended to their needs.

Also present were No 2 Military Region Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe and other military region commanders, members of the supervisory committee, local authorities, officials and chairmen of bus lines.

Commander inspects sanitation tasks in Yangon City

YANGON, 2 Aug - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe this morning inspected sanitation tasks in Yangon City.

At 6 am, the commander arrived at the junction of Hanthawady and Baho roads in Kamayut Township.

The commander inspected sanitation works along Baho Road between Hanthawady and Nanattaw Roads and drains. Head of Engineering Department (Road/Bridge) U Bo Htay of YCDC reported on condition of drains in Kamayut Township and flow of water into Kamayut Creek.

On arrival at Baho Road between Bagaya and Hanthawady Roads in Sangyoung Township, the commander saw over sanitation tasks being carried out on both sides of Baho Road and tasks for proper flow of water at drains. Head of Department U Bo Htay reported on conditions of drains in Sangyoung Township. Next, the commander gave instructions. He said that officials are to cooperate with social organizations and people for carrying out proper flow of water at drains and sanitation tasks in wards.


ASEAN Food Festival held

YANGON, 2 Aug - In commemoration of the 36th anniversary of ASEAN Day which falls on 8th August 2003, the Myanmar ASEAN Women's Friendship Association organized the ASEAN Food Festival at Mahawthada Hall of Zizawa Yeiktha, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Pyay Road here this morning. Leader of the Panel of Patrons of MAWFA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe attended and opened the festival.

Also present on the occasion were members of the Panel of Patrons Daw San Yone, wife of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Daw Khin Swe Soe, wife of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable members wives of ministers, executive members wives of senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, executive members Lady Ambassador of the Philippines and wives of ambassadors from the ASEAN Embassies in Yangon, families of the diplomatic corps and United Nations agencies in Yangon, members of the association and guests.

Leader of the Panel of Patrons Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe formally opened the festival and viewed round the festival.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pandita's birthday ceremony held

YANGON, 2 Aug - The 84th birthday ceremony of Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of National Races Development Parahita (Tiger) Monastery Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Pandita was held at the Dhamma Beikman of the monastery in Hline Township this morning. Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt attended the ceremony.

First, the congregation received the Five Precepts from the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw and members of the Sangha recited the parittas. Next, the minister and the disciples presented offertories to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. Afterwards, Member of Hline Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Zeyawady Monastery Nayaka Sayadaw Bhad-danta Uttara delivered a sermon, followed by sharing the merits gained. After the ceremony, 'soon' was offered to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha.

Drug traffickers get prison terms

YANGON, 2 Aug - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Mandalay Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Ma Sanda Hnin located between 36th and 37th Streets and 56th and 57th Streets in Maha Aungmyay Township, Mandalay, on 15 October last year. The team seized 0.8124 kilo of raw opium owned by Naing Myint Tun and wife Ma Hay Mar Win who were staying at the house.

Mandalay No (9) Police Station opened the case and filed Ma Sanda Hnin (a) Ma Swe, daughter of U Tun Hla, Ma Hay Mar Win, daughter of U Shwe Win of South Okkalapa Township, and Naing Myint Tun, son of U Tin Maung, under Sections 15/19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Mandalay District Court handed down 12 years' imprisonment each on Ma Hay Mar Win and Naing Myint Tun under Section 19(A) on 1 July.
