Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President of Maldives

YANGON, 26 July - On the occasion of the 38th Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Maldives, which falls on 26 July 2003, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President of the Republic of Maldives.

YANGON, 25 July - Mr Hul Phany, newly-accredited Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the Union of Myanmar, presented his credentials to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, at Zeyathiri Beikman on Konmyinttha at 10 am today.

Minister for Foreign Affairs accepts credentials of resident representative of UNDP and UNSOAD

YANGON, 26 July - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung accepted the credentials of Mr Charles Petrie, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme and Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System's Operational Activities for Development in the Union of Myanmar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 2 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Director-General of International Organizations and Economic Department U Win Mra.

Seminar on utilization of straw and azola fertilizers in farmlands held

YANGON, 25 July - The seminar on utilization of straw and azola fertilizers in farmlands was held at the Myanma Paddy Research Centre in Hmawby this morning.

Present were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, directors-general and managing directors of department and enterprises, researchers and officials.

The minister gave a speech. Officials of Myanma Agriculture Service and University of Agriculture reported on ways to produce fertilizers. The minister viewed characteristics of azola. Next, the minister inspected kinds of fertilizers and gave necessary instructions.

Afterwards, the minister and party went to the plantations of Myanma Agriculture Service at Vegetables Cultivation and Poultry and Fish Breeding Special Zone in Nyaunghnapin Village, Hmawby Township and inspected the crop plantations.

The minister inspected herbal plantations of departments and enterprises under the ministry and Ngamoeyeik Dam, the spillway and the control tower and gave necessary instructions.


Commander attends releasing of fish into paddy fields in Pathein, Kangyidaunt

YANGON, 25 July - Organized by the Fisheries Department and Ayeyawady Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Pathein and Kangyidaunt Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association members released fish into paddy fields in accord with the guidance on production of fish from paddy fields.

The ceremony was held at the pandal near paddy field in Khonzingon Village, Kangyidaunt Township, with an address by Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Htay Oo.

Also present were wife of the commander Patron of Ayeyawady Division MCWA Supervisory Committee Daw Ni Win, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe and wife, local authorities, officials of Fisheries Department and Myanma Agriculture Service, members of Agriculture Supervisory Committee, social organizations, farmers and local people.

First, the commander spoke on the occasion. He said today's ceremony was to release fish into paddy fields with a view to serving the interests of farmers. There are many species of fish in the paddy fields. Breeding of fish in the paddy fields can benefit the farmers.

In addition, it can be seen that the paddy cultivation is turning into the organic farming in nations of the world. As fish eats insects which destroy the paddy plants, farmers have to use less insecticides. Furthermore, fish dropping contributes to boostings the yield of paddy.

Ayeyawady Division has the largest number of acres for cultivation and production of paddy among other States and Divisions. Therefore, it is known that the division is called the barn. The project contributes not only towards the increasing of farmers' income but also towards the development of meat and fish sector. At a time when the government is rendering assistance regarding the project, the farmers are to make endeavours for achieving success, he said.

The respective experts have thoroughly dealt with matters on implementation of the project without causing any reduction in the number of paddy plants. So, farmers will achieve two accomplishments, he noted.

In accordance with the guidance given by the Head of State on steadfastly carrying out tasks for development of rural livestock breeding in the meat and fish sector, not only the farmers but also departmental officials and the people are to participate in the project contributing towards the raising of rural people's economic standard, he said.

Head of Ayeyawady Division Fisheries Department U Win Myint explained matters on the project. Officials presented fingerlings to local farmers. Next, the commander and wife, the deputy commander and wife, officials and MCWA members released fingerlings into the paddy fields.

After the ceremony, the commander met with the farmers and dealt with utilization of natural fertilizers. This rainy season, Ayeyawady Division has put 2,675,122 acres under monsoon paddy. At the ceremony, a total of 250,000 fingerlings of different species were released into 500 acres of paddy fields in Pathein and Kangyidaunt townships. Plans are under way to release 295,000 fingerlings of various species into 1,850 acres of paddy fields in Pathein, Maubin, Myaungmya and Pyapon districts, it is learnt.


Refresher Course for Township Judges concludes

YANGON, 25 July - The Refresher Course No 1 for Township Judges, conducted by Supreme Court, concluded at the training and research division of the Supreme Court in Hlinethaya Township this morning. Present were Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Deputy Chief Justices U Than Oo, U Khin Maung Latt and U Thein Soe, Supreme Court Justices, directors-general of Supreme Court (Yangon) and (Mandalay), instructors and 39 trainees.

Chief Justice U Aung Toe gave a speech and presented completion certificates to the leader of the trainees. The course lasted eight weeks.


Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe attends meeting on Teenage Reproductive Health Project

YANGON, 25 July - A coordination meeting on Teenage Reproductive Health Project for Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions, Kachin, Chin, Shan (South), (North) and (East) States, being co-sponsored by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and UNFPA, was held at the meeting hall of Mandalay Division MCWA Supervisory Committee this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, President of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC members, patron of Mandalay Division MCWA SC wife of the commander Daw Myat Ngwe and members and officials.

President of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave a speech and Assistant Resident Representative of UNFPA Daw Khin Ma Ma Aye explained Teenage Reproductive Health Project.

After the ceremony, representatives discussed future tasks for the States and Divisions. Also present on the occasion were 46 representatives of States and Divisions and eight observer youths.

President Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party, attended the ceremony to open the self-reliant rural health care division built by Mandalay Division MCWA Supervisory Committee, in Myakantha Model Village, Patheingyi Township, and formally opened the health care division. Next, a local resident handed over documents related to the division to Head of Patheingyi Township Health Department Dr Daw Aye Aye Mu. Accompanied by the commander, President Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party inspected the division. Next, they saw over social, economic, health and education tasks and attended to their needs.


Government acknowledges might of mass of Myanmar women Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs continues tour

YANGON, 25 July - The field tour group led by Member of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe arrived at Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday afternoon.

They met with members of WCWAs of Patheingyi Township, wards and villages, departmental female personnel, representatives of social organizations, students and local people totalling over 300 at Yankin Shwepyitha Hall in the township.

Member of Township WCWA Daw Swe Swe Aung extended greetings. Second leader of the group member of MNCWA and Vice-President of MNWCWA Professor Dr Daw May May Yee delivered an address on the occasion, saying that the purpose of the tour was to hold frank and cordial discussions with members of state and division, district, township, ward and village WCWAs and local female residents. She added that since July 2002, MNCWA has formed two working committees - the Working Committee for Development of Women and the Working Committee for Prevention Against Trafficking in Persons. Human trafficking causes hindrance to women development sector, she noted.

For ensuring all-round development of the nation, the government has been implementing the five rural development tasks. It is also realizing the project for supply of sufficient potable water for Mandalay Division, she said. She spoke of the need for the women, representing more than half of Myanmar's population, to enthusiastically and fully cooperate with the government. The government acknowledges the might of the mass of Myanmar women, she noted. The MNCWA is carrying out all women's affairs for the development of Myanmar women, she said.

Afterwards, the group leader presented exercise books, pencils and K 50,000 for small loans work of Township WCWA through officials.

Next, those present and the group members held frank and cordial discussions. At the meeting, the group members gave advice and made suggestions on their difficulties and problems and attended to their needs.


Commander attends pathana-recitation competitions, chess cahmpionship competitions

YANGON, 25 July - The Maternal and Child Welfare Association of North-East Command held its first pathana-recitation competition at the Dhamayon of the command on 24 July morning. It was attended by Sayadaws from monasteries in Lashio and members of the Sangha, Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Chairman North-East Command Commander Maj-Gen Myint Hlaing and wife, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hla Myint and wife, officials of the command and their wives, commandants of units and battalions under the command, and guests.

The ceremony started with three-time recitation of namotassa, and the commander and the congregation received the Five Precepts from Yanaungmyin monastery Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Vicitta. The commander and officials then offered provisions to the Sayadaws. "Soon" was also offered to the members of the Sangha.

A total of 35 teams from the units and battalions of the command joined the competition.

Next, the commander attended a ceremony held in memory of the late Vice-Chairman Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kavindacara at the Pariyatti School in Lashio and donated robes and provisions.

The commander and the congregation received the Five Precepts from Maha Bodhayon Monastery Sayadaw Maha Gandha-vacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Narada. On the occasion, the members of the Sangha recited parittas, and the commander and officials offered provisions to Sayadaws.

The commander and officials also accepted K 20 million donated by wellwishers.

Khayoe Pariyatti School Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumana delivered a sermon.


After the ceremony, the commander and wife offered "soon" to members of the Sangha. The commander also attended prize presentation ceremony for Commander's Shield chess competition. The deputy commander and officials presented prizes to first, second and third prize winning teams. Afterwards, the commander presented the first prize and the championship shield to the winning team.


Those who imitated and sold medicines of Myanma Pharmaceutical Factory arrested

YANGON, 25 July - The Government is taking deterrent actions against production and distribution of imitated medicines which can pose danger to public health. A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force, staff of Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory and local authorities, acting on information that imitated medicines of MPF (former BPI) were being manufactured, searched the house at No 1358, Zawgyi 3rd lane, Ward 42, Dagon Myothit (North), on 4 July 2003. The team arrested Sein Win Maw (a) Maw Gyi, son of U Nyunt Aung, together with 21 kinds of imitated MPF medicines, 647,300 tablets and 386 bottles of syrup.

According to further investigation, former employees of Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory Win Kyi, son of U Hla Myint of 80, Aung Soe Moe Street, Ward 11, Shwepyitha Township, printed labels to be put on the bottles of MPF and made the forged manufactured date, expiry date, lot No on the labels.The authorities seized over 300,000 labels and other equipment from his house.

It is learnt that Khway Kauk of 721st Street, Ward 23, Dagon Myothit (North) and Kyaw Py of 175, Aungdipa Street, Ward 28, Dagon Myothit (North) ground foreign-made unnamed tablets of medicines which were cheaper than the medicines of MPF and manufactured to turn them into tablets of Analgesin, Paracetamol, Presnislone, etc by hand-drive tableting machine. The authorities seized the grinding machine, the scales, bags, raw medicines, the tableting machine and MPF brand medicines.

Sein Win Maw (a) Maw Gyi put the counterfeit medicines bought from Khway Kauk into old MPF bottles and stuck the bottles with paper brands from Win Kyi. The counterfeit medicines were then sold to shops at Mingala market. Likewise, Win Htaik Aung son of Kway Kauk, of No 202, 9th Thura Street, Ward 9, South Okkalapa, did so and sold the counterfeit medicines to Mingala market. Tin Ohn, son of U Tin Maung, mixed 4 ounces of water with 16 ounces of Vitazone syrup in a bottle and put the syrup into small bottles and stuck the bottles with new paper brands before printing the seal of the Ministry of Industry-1. The counterfeit medicines were then sold to shops at Mingala market.

The shops the counterfeit medicines were sold are Shop No 557 of Zaw Oo, son of U Maung Sein; Shop No 500 of Aung Anug, son of U Than Myint; Shop No 634 of Aung Min; and Shop No 646 of Than Shwe, son of U Tin Ngwe.

Aung Min (a) Ragunatha, son of U Kyaw Than, of No 17, Thukwe Road, Htaykwe Ward, Tamway Township, put other tablets into old MPF bottles and stuck the bottles with MPF paper brands from Win Kyi. He sold the counterfeit medicines at his Moenat Thuza shop, Shop No 634. In addition, Aung Min has changed the brands of 7576 ampoules of expired injection into new ones bearing expiry dates of 2004. In connection with the case, nine persons were exposed together with 44 kinds of counterfeit medicines, 792,700 counterfeit tablets, 619 bottles of counterfeit syrup, 7576 ampoules of expired injection. Kway Kauk and Kyaw Pyi who were involved in the case managed to escape.

The authorities concerned are exposing those who made counterfeit medicines and distributed them, and measures are being taken to take severe action against the arrested culprits.

Organizations and departments engaged in elimination of leprosy in Myanmar honoured

YANGON, 25 July - A ceremony to honour the organizations and departments that are engaged in elimination of leprosy in Myanmar was held at Myanmar Medical Association's Auditorium this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, the deputy directors-general, the rectors and officials, resident representatives of WHO and UN agencies and officials, the chairmen of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, MMA and Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, the heads of State and Division Health Departments and officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Dr Kyaw Myint said that the ceremony held today was to honour those from the committees, the sub-committees, organizations and health staff who provided assistance in successful holding of the third meeting of Global Alliance for Elimination of Leprosy at Sedona Hotel in Yangon.

Myanmar launched campaign for eradication of leprosy since 1950-51 and has made progress with the use of MDT method. Myanmar can also prevent the side effects of the leprosy that result in deformity and disability. Achievement has been made in eradication of leprosy in so short a time due to combined efforts of health staff, social organizations and departments under the guidance of the Head of State. He expressed thanks to WHO, organizations at home and abroad, the health staff, social organizations and departments who provided assistance for successful holding of the third meeting of Global Alliance for Elimination of Leprosy, and for realization of the objectives of elimination of leprosy.

Next, Minister Dr Kyaw Myint, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Aung Thein and U Maung Aung presented certificates of honour to the President of MMCWA, Chairmen of MMA and MWJA, the heads of State and Division Health Departments and officials of the committees and the sub-committees and the ceremony ended.

Next, Minister Dr Kyaw Myint greeted those present on the occasion.


Drug

Heroin seized in Lwejai

YANGON, 25 July - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Bhamo Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Law Ta Khu at Ward 5 in Lwejai on 20 June morning and found 69.33 grams of heroin kept in a soap box hidden in a hole on the wall of his bedroom.

Lwejai Police Station has filed Law Ta Khu, son of U Law Phaphu of Ward 5, Lwejai town. Action is being taken against him under Sections 15/19 (A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
