Secretary-1 inspects all-round construction project for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image

Yangon, 23 July - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, Yangon Division, where the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image is kept, this evening.

The Secretary-1 paid homage to the image. Members of the pagoda board of trustees reported on matters related to the project.

Next, the Secretary-1 inspected the tasks for greening of the hill and its environs and gave necessary instructions.



Southern Command holds Waso robes offering ceremony

Yangon, 23 July - Families of the Southern Command offered Waso robes to members of the Sangha at a ceremony held at the command in Toungoo on 22 July.

Present were Toungoo TheinU Monastery Presiding Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Visara, member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha and members of the Sangha, Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Ko Ko.

Toungoo Kyanigan Monastery Presiding Sayadaw Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Suriya invested the congregation with the Five Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited Metta sutta parittas.

Next, the commander and wife, the deputy commander, Brig-Gen Thura Myint Thein of Toungoo Station and wellwishers presented Waso robes and offertories to members of the Sangha. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Suriya delivered a sermon.

Cash donated to Funeral Services Association

Yangon, 23 July - A ceremony to donate cash to Funeral Services Association of Yangon by the family of Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and wife Daw San San Myint and departments of the Ministry of Transport was held at the ministry on Merchant Street here at 9.30 am today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Officer on Special Duty Brig-Gen Myo Tin, heads of departments under the ministry, Vice-Chairmen of the association U Aye Thant, U Kyaw Thu and members.

The minister explained the purpose of donation.

Next, on behalf of the minister and family, U Aung Maw presented K 500,000 and the deputy minister K 1.1 million of the departments under the ministry to representative of the association actor U Kyaw Thu.

Later, Vice-Chairman U Aye Thant spoke words of thanks.


Tin Smelting Plant, salt mill inspected in Thanlyin

Yangon, 23 July - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, accompanied by Managing Director of the No 2 Mining Enterprise U Hla Thein, yesterday afternoon went to the tin smelter in Thanlyin Township, where they were welcomed by the factory manager and officials.

After inspecting the repairs of furnaces, the stock of raw materials and the refining of tin residues, the minister gave instructions. The minister also looked into the crop plantations in the compound of the factory.

At the hall of the factory, the minister met with employees and gave instructions on making efforts to exceed the targets, boosting the production, supervision for systematic consumption of electricity and fuel oil, and family welfare activities.

In the evening, the minister arrived at the salt mill of the Myanma Salt and Marine Chemicals Enterprise in Thakayta Township, where he inspected the production of iodized salt, soft salt, and traditional salt and gave instructions on the distribution of the products to the consuming public.


New Win Thuza Shop opened in Hlinethaya Township

Yangon, 23 July - Win Thuza Shop of Ministry of Industry-1 was opened this morning in Hlinethaya Township attended by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon Command Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung.

Managing Director of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries U Thaik Tun and Chairman of Yangon District (North) Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Ma Tu formally opened the shop.

Next, Maj-Gen Myint Swe unveiled the signboard. Afterwards, the commander, the minister and officials inspected round the sale of consumer products, medicines, clothes and foodstuff.

At the shop, 235 items of goods produced by Industry-1 will be sold. Afterwards, Minister U Aung Thaung went to 5-ton polyethylene bag factory in Industrial Zone-4 in Shwepyitha Township. At the briefing hall, officials reported on allotment of plots for industrial zones and implementation of factory projects. Next, the minister inspected progress of the factory construction. He proceeded to the ice factory which has been constructed near Shwepyitha Bridge and inspected installed machines. He also saw over production of vests and sport shirts at Phawkan Garment Factory in Insein Township.


Regional development, agricultural work inspected in Htantabin Township

Yangon, 23 July - Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon Command Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe inspected the regional development tasks and agricultural work in Htantabin Township, Yangon North District, this morning.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe also looked into the tasks carried out for the prevention of Hline river banks from erosion and gave instructions.

The commander next oversaw the cultivation of monsoon paddy on both sides of the main ditch at Kyunngu river water pumping project and heard reports on repair works to be carried out for the main ditch.

The commander also inspected the site chosen for the construction of a new Htantabin market and gave instructions.

At the meeting hall of Htantabin Township Peace and Development Council Office, the commander met with township-level departmental officials and local authorities and gave instructions.

He said that for the greening of the 30-mile radius of Yangon International Airport, efforts are being made to cultivate monsoon paddy, summer paddy, beans and pulses, edible oil crops, and other cash crops all the year round. Moreover, arrangements are under way for supply of irrigation water. For this purpose, departmental officials are to coordinate with local farmers while the Government is rendering assistance to local farmers to boost their agricultural work. The development in the agricultural sector will result in the growth of local economy. With a view to developing the agricultural sector, the Government has implemented 9 river water pumping projects and built 14 sluice gates and other irrigation facilities in Htantabin Township.

Next, local authorities and departmental officials reported on requirements for regional development.

After hearing the reports, the commander attended to the requirements. He then inspected the monsoon paddy plantations on both sides of Thida Aye Road.

Of 46,258 acres of monsoon paddy targeted to be grown in Htantabin Township, a total of 45,093 acres have been put under cultivation. Later, the commander went to the tube-well camp of Hlinethaya water supply project under the Yangon City Development Committee in Thephyu village, Htantabin Township, where he inspected the tasks being carried out and gave instructions.

On arrival at Wayonseik village on the other bank of Hline river in Kyimyindine Township, Yangon North District, the com2mander and party were welcomed there by No 3 Military Region Commander Col Tint Hsan, local authorities and officials. The commander visited Mahavisuddayon monastery in the village and paid homage to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Visuddhacara. He also offered provisions to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha.

Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and local authorities reported on development conditions of the village and progress in the construction of roads linking villages and wards.

After hearing the reports, the commander gave instructions on cooperation of the local people in the tasks for better transport system as well as for regional development tasks to ensure development in education, health and social sectors.

The commander also inspected the basic education post-primary school in the village and heard reports. Later, the commander oversaw the thriving plantations of monsoon paddy in the village.


Fingerlings released into inundated areas

Yangon, 23 July - The Mandalay Division Fisheries Department under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries for the fourth time released fingerlings into the inundated areas adjacent to Ayeyawady River at a ceremony held near Shangalay Village, Amarapura Township, on 21 July morning.

Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, departmental heads, local authorities, officials, members of social organizations and local people were present.

At the ceremony, the commander and those present released about 14.85 million fingerlings of various species into the inundated areas.

In 2003-2004, the department has released 557 million fingerlings into the inundated areas adjacent to Ayeyawady and Chindwin rivers.


Commander inspects Nankwe Bridge

Yangon, 23 July - Kachin State Peace and Development Council Chairman Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Maung Maung Swe on 16 July inspected Nankwe Bridge near Mawphaung Village in Myitkyina Township.

At 1.30 pm, the commander arrived at Karmine and met with farmers in the township and gave instructions on cultivation tasks to be extended.

At the meeting, those present reported on needs for cultivation. The commander attended to the needs.



Commander inspects monsoon paddy cultivation

Yangon, 23 July- Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Tha Aye arrived at monsoon paddy model farm in Zaha village tract in Dawei on 15 July.

Chairman of Dawei District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Kywe and officials reported on cultivation of monsoon paddy.

The commander inspected cultivation of paddy and met local farmers and fulfilled the requirements.

He observed fertilizers displayed at the temporary mandat.


Fingerlings put into Humon Dam in Lashio

Yangon, 23 July- A ceremony to put fingerlings into the Humon Dam was held at the dam in Lashio on 20 July.

Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council (north) Commander of North East Command Maj-Gen Myint Hlaing, Head of Shan State Fisheries Department U Hla Htay and Deputy Director of Irrigation Department U Kyaw Win spoke.

The commander and officials put over 100,000 fingerlings into the dam. The commander inspected cultivation of paddy at the Hsinshweli special high yield monsoon paddy field.

The commander paid obeisance to Secretary of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Bhaddana Ñanobasa of Seiktathukha Kyaungtaik and presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

The commander inspected construction of two-storey monastic education school. Engineer U Aung Win Myint reported on construction and tasks to be undertaken.

The commander paid obeisance to member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddana Çandima of Myole Kyaungtaik and presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

He inspected construction of K 70 million Soonsar-kyaung. U Win Maung of Asia World Co Ltd reported on tasks undertaken. The commander gave instructions on construction of the building with Myanmar artistic works. The commander paid respects to 63-inches high bronze Buddha image to be kept at the Soonsarkyaung.

Home Affairs Minister leaves for Thailand

Yangon, 23 July - Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing left here by air this morning to attend the ministerial level meeting for drug control of the five countries including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, China and India to be held in Chiang Rai, Thailand.


MWF President arrives back

Yangon, 23 July - Myanmar Wushu Federation President U Khin Maung Lay arrived back here from Japan this evening after attending 26th Asia Wushu Federation Executives Meeting held in Tokyo on 20-22 July.

At the meeting, those present discussed matters relating to 7th World Wushu Competition and 2nd Asia Youth Wushu competition. Japan Wushu Federation donated two carpets worth US $24,000 to MWF.

Sports Minister's cup soccer

Yangon, 23 July - The sports minister's cup fourth inter-state/division novice division soccer tournament for the year 2003 continued at the designated towns in Sagaing Division this evening.

In Kale Zone (A) group of Kale, Shan State (East) team beat Shan State (North) team 2-1. The player of the match award went to Khun Maung Kee of Shan State (East) team. In Shwebo Zone (D) group of Shwebo, Kayah State team beat Taninthayi Division 1-0. Ei Si Dawrol of Kayah State team won the player of the match award.


ISD volleyball tourney continues

Yangon, 23 July - The Year 2003 33rd inter-state/division men's and women's volleyball tournament continued at Aung San Stadium here this morning. In the men's event, Sagaing Division beat Magway Division 3-1, Bago Division Rakhine State 3-0 and Kachin State Kayin State 3-0.

Mandalay Division beat Magway Division 3-0 in the women's event.

A total of five matches- three men's and two women's - will be held at the same venue tomorrow.


Drug

Drug traffickers sentenced

Yangon, 23 July - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and the Yangon Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Thein Htay Oo (a) Thein Myint Oo in Phaya Street, Thaungyilay Ward, Hlinethaya Township, on 21 May 2002.

The authorities discovered 42 grams of heroin kept in a soap box from the kitchen and arrested him together with his wife Ma Hla Kyi.

The Hlinethaya Police Station filed lawsuits against Thein Htay Oo (a) Thein Myint Oo, son of U Thein Maung of Thawuthti Yaygyaw village, Lewe Township; and his wife Ma Hla Kyi, daughter of U Hmon Gyi under the Sections 15/19 (A)/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Later, the case was handed over to the Yangon North District Court.

On 29 May 2003, the court sentenced 25-year imprisonment on Thein Htay Oo under Section 19 (A) and 20-year imprisonment on Ma Hla Kyi under Section 19 (A).


Opium refinery exposed in Hsenwi Township

Yangon, 23 July - A combined team including local Tatmadawmen and members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information that there was a house in Namtwayhaw Village (Map reference U-099875), Namkhait Village-tract, Hsenwi Township, Shan State (North) and paraphernalia was stored there, raided the house on 20 July.

The authorities arrested five culprits and and seized 5.6 kilos of heroin, 10.28 kilos of opium, 681.9 litres of chloroform, 681.9 litres of ether, 120 pyis of poppy seeds, one .30 carbine, one magazine, 10 rounds of ammunition and one hand-made gun from the house of Lihway, 40, son of U Showel.

After questioning the culprits and obtaining their confession, the authorities also raided old refinery at the place (Map reference U-116910) and seized 409.14 litres of chloroform and 22.73 litres of loizol. Action is being taken against the culprits under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
