In accord with Theravada Buddhism, traditions and culture, nation's women been held in esteem since yore
Exhibition on Myanmar Women's Endeavours will spotlight undertakings of women's sector, inform international community about the endeavours

Yangon, 20 Sept - A work coordination meeting on organizing Myanmar women's endeavours exhibition was held at Zeyathiri Beikman in Konmyinttha here this morning, with an address by Patron of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

The General also said Myanmar has taken part more actively for progress of the women's sector after it attended the Fourth World Women's Conference which was held in Beijing.

Since the time of the forefathers, Myanmar women have enjoyed equal rights with men. Sharing the responsibilities and opportunities together with men, they have also taken part in all the sectors together with men.

In accord with the teachings of the Theravada Buddhism and the traditions and culture, the women of Myanmar have been held in esteem by the nation since yore.

As the Myanmar women have fully enjoyed their rights since time immemorial, they do not need to demand any special rights. But Myanmar attended the Beijing Conference with the aim of extending their participation in the international women's sector.

There are no big problems concerning the act of violence against women. There are only very few complaints filed against small problems arising from family affairs. The Women's Affairs Committees at different levels have been solving the family problems through consolation, education and legal protections.

Some problems occurred in the border areas due to young women who entered some neighbouring countries to find jobs there. Job and economic opportunities for women are flourishing in Myanmar at present. But some who fell victim to the tricks and lies of unscrupulous persons, and went to work illegally in the neighbouring countries were facing troubles. Thus, the activities of the women's sector have been accelerated in the border areas. Not long ago, an anti-Myanmar group taking refuge in a neighbouring country launched slanderous accusations against Myanmar concerning the Myanmar women's sector with the intention of breaking up the national unity.

Thus, a work committee was formed, and the personnel concerned of the respective working groups have toured the border regions, holding discussions with local women, and educating and organizing them. Recently, members of the MNCWA were able to meet and save young women from facing troubles abroad. The MNCWA members saved the young women from falling into the trap of the unscrupulous persons through educative and organizational means.

The MNCWA and its branches at all levels are making efforts systematically and actively with goodwill to prevent women from facing troubles, to enable them to fully enjoy their rights and to protect them under the existing laws. Plans are under way to hold the Exhibition on Myanmar Women's Endeavours with the aim of highlighting the undertakings leading to develop the women's sector and of informing the international community about the endeavours.

Arrangements will have to be made to spotlight the endeavours of the women. Thus, all the committees at different levels and the departments concerned are urged to make harmonious efforts for the successful holding of the exhibition on a grand scale.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported on work being done for the exhibition. Leader of working group for display Director of the National Museum of the Department of Cultural Institute Daw Nu Mya Zan reported on arrangements of booths including the central exhibition booth and booths showing the activities of MNWCWA and respective groups.

Then, Secretary of the leading committee Director-General U Sit Myaing of the Social Welfare Department reported on opening ceremony of the exhibition, erecting billboards marking the exhibition, hanging flags commomerating the exhibition and designating the duration of the exhibition. Those present also discussed matters related to the display covering of Myanmar women's endeavours in various sectors.

Then, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt inspected the blueprints of the central exhibition booth and other booths, scale models of archways, sample designs of billboards and sculptures and handy crafts of women and gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, Patron of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt attended to the requirements presented by officials and the meeting came to a close.
