( 1 ) Victories of Myanmar team to Asia Games will contribute to success and progress of nation's sports sector
Secretary-1 meets Myanmar sports contingent to Asian Games

Yangon, 13 Sept - Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with Myanmar sports contingent to the XIV Asian Games to be held in Pusan, Republic of Korea, from 29 September to 14 October, at the National Indoor Stadium-1, Thuwunna in Thingangyun Township, here at 3 pm today. Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said that at present, the State is paying special attention to raising the glory of Myanmar through sports.

At this time, it is a distinctive prestige for a person who has been selected as a brilliant and promising athlete to represent the nation in the Asia level games. The sportsmen and sportswomen of the Myanmar national team to the Asian Games will have to understand that the State has assigned the classic and profound national duty to them individually and as a team to uplift the dignity of the nation with the power of sports. Thus, they are urged to make unrelenting efforts to win medals. The countries of the world are actively taking part in the international games, vying with each other for superiority in the international sports sector with the conviction "Victory in the international sport events can enhance the status of the nation and the people, and reflecting the ability of the national strength". With the belief that promotion of sports amounts to defending the country, the Union of Myanmar is also giving greater priority to developing the sports sector in parallel with the nation-building undertakings.

Famous sportsmen and sportswomen, whose victories not only dominated Southeast Asia and Asia, but also reached the world level games did emerge in Myanmar during a certain period in the past. But for some reasons, the Myanmar sports sector was away from winning medals during the period for about a decade, leading to lessen the degree of the public interest in sports. But their desire for the upsurge of the sports sector again and the sports victories never wanes even a little. Hence, the government is striving to promote the sports sector as a national task in accord with the goal "Myanmar sports the world to conquer". The people are getting in touch more with the sports sector and their scope of knowledge becomes wider because of the national development and the improvement in the living standard. The people are energetically taking part in the sports promotion as they are vitalized with the spirit to see the Myanmar sports entering a new era. Especially, the national entrepreneurs whose businesses are enjoying stable growth due to the government's assistance and encouragement are providing assistance to promote the sports sector with might and main as they have taken part in helping develop the health, education, social and religious sectors.

As the athletes worthy of receiving the assistance provided by the State and the people are also striving hard, there are signs of an upturn in the Myanmar sports. The Myanmar athletes are winning medals again in the Southeast Asian and Asian games at present. In addition, victories of some sports events have reached the world level. The achievements of the Myanmar athletes to the Asian Games will contribute to success and progress of the nation's sports sector. The athletes are urged to take part in the games with relentless perseverance and firm determination for victory, having in mind the fact that their triumph plays an important role in developing the sports sector. As Myanmar is taking part only in the events which have high hopes for medals in the international games, more attention can be paid to the sector which is showing good results.

Because of the efforts of the sports federations, the athletes are able to get access to training courses applying modern techniques and equipment, and are being conducted by foreign instructors and to international warming-up competitions. Of the 36 events of the 13 Asia Games, Myanmar took part in five events, winning one gold, six silver and 11 bronze, and secured the 20th place among the 41 participating nations. In the present Games, the nation will compete in 13 events out of the 38. The athletes are required to strive to win medals with the national spirit, the nationalistic fervour and the unyielding spirit. They will have to nurture and improve themselves with regular training, correct systems, skill, fitness, discipline, sporting spirit and the national spirit.

The managers and coaches are responsible for protecting the athletes and uplifting their morale and fitness. Members of the sports team will have to live in unity, help each other and act in accord with the traditions and culture. The Secretary-1, on behalf of the State, thanked the national entrepreneurs, wellwishers and sports fans for their all-round assistance for the team, expressing belief that they will also take part in honouring the medalists. In conclusion, he wished the team to take part in the competitions with firm determination and relentless efforts to win medals; to help uplift the glory of the nation and the people with their medals; and to bring honour to the nation by wining victories with discipline and fairness.

Members of Myanmar Sports team who are going to take part in XIV Asia Games were introduced to Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt group-wise.
