At 10.30 am, the Myanmar-Bangladesh meeting was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

( 4 ) Maj-Gen Ye Myint inspects construction of roads, dams in Mandalay Division

Yangon, 17 June - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Ye Myint, met officers, Tatmadawmen and families at Bayintnaung Hall of the local battalion in Myingyan on 15 June morning.

At 8.30 am, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived at Phaunggadawt Dam Project, southeast of Phaunggadawt village in Ngazun Township. Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint and officials reported on data of the project and requirements. Maj-Gen Ye Myint attended to their needs and inspected construction of the dam. Phaunggadawt earth Dam, 67 feet high and 2,850 feet long, is located near Phaunggadawt village in Ngazun Township. The dam is being built beginning July 2001. The embankment work has been completed 88 per cent. On completion, the dam can irrigate 2,000 acres of farmland and it can prevent 180 acres of land from covering of sand in the rainy season.

Afterwards, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected the road to Phaunggadawt, Kanma, Thamonkaing and Myotha villages and Myotha Dam. Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint reported on matters related to the Myotha Dam. Then, they inspected the dam and the conduit. Next, they proceeded to the site of the repair of TadaU-Myingyan-NyuangU Road. Next, Maj-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on repair and maintenance of roads in the region and inspected construction of the road. At noon, they arrived at the construction site of Panhsay Creek Bridge on the eight-lane entrance road to Mandalay International Airport. Officials reported on construction tasks and availability of construction materials.

They then left for Mandalay. The 67 miles and six furlongs long Myingyan-Myotha-TadaU-Mandalay Road is 30 miles and two furlongs shorter than the 98 miles long Myingyan-Myittha-Kyaukse-Mandalay Road. Similarly, the 108 miles long NyaungU-Letpanchaypaw-Myingyan-Myotha-TadaU-Mandalay new road is 69 mile shorter than NyaungU-Popa-Myingyan-Myittha-Kyaukse-Mandalay old road. The road is being constructed in line with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo inspects regional development tasks

Yangon, 17 June - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen Thura Myint Aung and officials, arrived in the Myanma Salt and Marine Chemicals Enterprise at Panga village in Thanbyuzayat Township on 13 June morning.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party were briefed by manager U Kyaw Lwin of the MSMCE on history, objectives, annual production and production of import-substitute chemicals, rainfall, work being carried out, breeding of 350,000 prawns for welfare of staff and production line of salt and mineral salt from sea water with the aids of charts. Maj-Gen Maung Bo gave instructions on exceeding the target and attended to the requirements. Then, he visited the Sea Prawn Breeding Camp on 176 acres of land of Pyae Phyo Kyaw Co near Karoppi creek. General Manager U Htay Myint and officials briefed him on digging of ponds, and digging of 17 ponds and raising of prawn fry and inflow of sea water to the ponds.

After attending to the needs, Maj-Gen Maung Bo inspected completion of the 21 miles 7 furlongs long road linking villages that will be later upgraded into a tarred road. In the evening, Maj-Gen Maung Bo and party visited the cold storage of Shwe Ying Fishery Ltd and inspected systematic storage of fish and packing of fish for marketing. Afterwards, Maj-Gen Maung Bo arrived at Zeebyuthaung Village and inspected conditions of jetty, school and dispensary there. He also visited the construction site of Ye creek bridge of the Ministry of Rail Transportation where Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than and officials welcomed him.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo heard reports on construction of the bridge by Executive Engineer U Aung Myint and Deputy Minister U Pe Than and gave instructions to the officials at the briefing hall of the site. The bridge is 857 feet and six inches long and 16 feet wide. It has two 3 feet six inches wide pedestrians and the bridge will have reinforced concrete frames. At night, Maj-Gen Maung Bo met departmental officials, members of social organizations, ward Peace and Development Council and towns elders at the hall of Ye Township Peace and Development Council office and made a speech. On 14 June, Maj-Gen Maung Bo met officers, other ranks and families at the hall of local station in Ye Township and made a speech. He paid homage to Shwe San Daw pagoda in the town and made cash donations. He then visited Ye Township People's Hospital and inspected chosen site for extended building.

In meeting the staff, he made a speech at the hall of the hospital. Then, Maj-Gen Maung Bo proceeded to rubber wood factory of Mya Kan Tha Co Ltd at Mawkanin Village in the township and heard the reports by the general manager at the hall of the factory. He inspected production line and attended to the needs. In the evening, Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Commander Brig-Gen Thura Myint Aung and party met staff, members of social organizations, ward Peace and Development Council and townselders at the hall of township Peace and Development Council.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo made a speech. He then inspected Thanbyuzayat Township People's Hospital and spoke words of encouragement to patients there. He also visited the rubber factory of the Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise, inspected production line there and attended to the requirements.

Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than sees over development tasks in Thayawady District

Yangon, 17 June - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned, left here by car and arrived at Meenin Creek Bridge in Thayawady, Bago Division, on 16 June.

They were welcomed there by Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Aung Min, Chairman of Bago Division (West) Peace and Development Council Col Soe Nwe and officials. Afterwards, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party arrived at the Ceramics Factory of Myanma Ceramic Industries in Thayawady. At the briefing hall, Factory Manager Maj Htin Kyaw reported on the location and area of the factory, annual production and availability of raw materials.

Then, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected finished goods and raw materials. Officials conducted Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and party round the factory. Next, they proceeded to Kantaya Fish Breeding and Agricultural Production Cooperative Ltd in Letpadan Township and inspected the dressing of fish to be sent to markets. Chairman of the Cooperative Ltd U Kyaw Kyaw reported on the establishment of the society, fish ponds, fish breeding methods, production of fish and the target of fish production for 2002-2003 financial year. Bago Division (West) Chairman Col Soe Nwe and Thayawady District Chairman Lt-Col Ohn Myint reported on reclamation of wetlands in townships of the district, the digging of fish ponds, and arrangements for digging fish ponds on 5,000 acres of land. Commander Brig-Gen Aung Min gave a supplementary report. Then, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave necessary instructions.

Afterwards, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected fish ponds and vegetable patches of the Cooperative Ltd. On their arrival at Htaintaw Station Hospital in Monyo Township, Dr U Yi Lin conducted Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party round the hospital. They then inspected preparation for opening the multimedia teaching centre at Htaintaw Basic Education High School and gave necessary instructions.

Next, they saw over the 22 miles and two furlongs long Letpadan-Kyonlaha-Tharawaw road section, the 27 miles six furlongs long embankment linking Letpadan and Monyo Townships, the 37 miles long Phayagyikon Khaaungbin embankment in Monyo Township and the 33 miles and four furlongs long Myitmakha embankment linking Letpadan and Thayawady townships. Then, they inspected water erosion at U Shwe Hnit Asu Jetty in U Shwe Hnit Asu village in Letpadan Township. At the briefing hall of Kunthidabin Embankment, Assistant Director U Kyaw Win reported to Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than on matters related to 72,00 feet long Kunthidabin Embankment and its benefited areas. Phayagyikon, Kha-aungbin, the eastern embankment of Ayeyawady River, Myitmakha and Kunthidabin embankments in Thayawady District can prevent danger of flood at 180,000 acres of lands in villages of Monyo, Letpadan and Thayawady townships.

Afterwards, they proceeded to fish ponds of private fish breeders in new Hsinku village in Letpadan Township. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than heard reports on fish breeding work by the commander, the minister and the official and gave necessary instructions.

( 5 ) Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation holds coordination meeting

Yangon, 17 June - The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation held a coordination meeting on the agriculture sector for 2002-2003 at the meeting hall of Myanma Farm Enterprise this morning, with an address by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin.

The minister gave instructions on agricultural tasks of previous years and efforts to be made for achieving success in undertaking the agricultural tasks as well as implementing the region-wise economic plans laid down by the State in the 2002-2003, the second year of the third short-term five-year plan, tasks to be carried out for meeting the target of crops production and cooperation of departments concerned.

Then, chairmen of the State and Division Agricultural Supervisory Committees reported on strong and weak points in implementing the agricultural plans for 2001-2002, arrangements for meeting the targets of the plans for 2002-2003 and requirements. The meeting continues tomorrow.

MAPT holds annual meeting, educational cash assistance and prize presentation ceremony

Yangon, 17 June - Myanmar Agricultural Produce Trading of the Ministry of Commerce held its 2001-2002 fiscal year annual and first four-monthly (2002) work coordination meeting and a cash assistance and prize presentation ceremony at MAPT office this morning. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone spoke on the occasion. After the minister's speech, Managing Director U Min Hla Aung explained the purpose of holding the ceremony. Next, the minister presented cash assistance for 2002-2003 academic year to the managing director. Then, the minister, the deputy minister, the managing director and general managers presented prizes to the prize winners.

BTD holds first four-monthly coord meeting, 2002

Yangon, 17 June - The first four-monthly coordination meeting for 2002 of the Border Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce was held at the department this morning with an address by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone. First, Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made an address. Then, he presented prizes for work performance for first four-month period, 2002, to the staff. Next, Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan presented school uniforms, exercise books and cash assistance for 2002-2003 academic year for children of the staff to the officials. Afterwards, U Nay Win gave promotion orders to the staff who were promoted and the ceremony came to a close.

CEC member meets with USDA members in Mon State

Yangon, 17 June - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Ohn Myint met with personnel of social organizations and the secretary and executives of Paung Township USDA at the office of the association in Paung, Mon State, on 14 June.

Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and party then inspected Htanbinchaung salt production work. On 15 June morning, the minister, together with Maj-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence and the commander of South-East Command, attended the tree-planting ceremony and the pepper planting ceremony. The CEC member visited Kangyi Pagoda in Mudon Township where USDA members were carrying out cleaning work. On 16 June, the CEC member attended the ceremony to honour the teachers and to present prizes to outstanding trainees of the national culture and morals course in Mawlamyine.

Bureau of Special Investigation holds work coord meeting 2002

Yangon, 17 June - The first four-monthly work coordination meeting 2002 of Bureau of Special Investigation was held in the Hsinphyushin hall of BSI (Head Office) this morning, attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, who also delivered an address.

At the meeting, deputy directors, U Naing Win and U Pe San, reported to the minister on work being carried out by state offices; Director U Aung Thein Tun on work being undertaken by state and division offices under the department in lower Myanmar; Director U Htay Naing on work being implemented by state and division offices under the department in upper Myanmar; and Director-General U Tun Hla Aung on work being done by BSI. Speaking on the occasion, the minister called for making investigations swift and correct, and being alert for the security of the State. He also said that endeavors are needed to make the people understand who is harming the economy of the State and who is working for the progress of the State. More efforts must be made as part of a national duty for the eradication of the drug trafficking and for keeping track of the political and economic situations of the State.

Then, he urged all to actively take part in activities to realize the five rural development tasks being implemented by the State and the ten directives of the Head of State in accord with rules and regulations. Later, Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung also spoke of the need for efforts to make the policies laid down by the State successful and to become well-informed and good employees in the knowledge age when IT system is in use broadly. The meeting will continue tomorrow.

Teaching aids, exercise books donated

Yangon, 17 June - A ceremony to present teaching aids and exercise books for the Ministry of Education was held at the meeting hall of the Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) on Thaton Road, Kamayut Township, here this afternoon.

 It was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, the directors-general and chairmen of the departments and organizations under the Ministry of Education, Chairman of the Forest Resource Environment Development and Conservation Association-FREDA U Sein Maung Wint, Managing Director of Myanma Stationery Trading Ltd U Kan Htoo Maung and guests. U Sein Maung Wint and U Kan Htoo Maung explained the purpose of the donation of video tapes, TVs and VCRs and exercise books. Then, Minister for Education U Than Aung accepted the donations and presented the certificates of honour to the donors.

Minister undertakes religious activities in Pakokku

Yangon, 17 June - Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, paid homage to Thihoshin Buddha Image in Pakokku on 16 June. Then, the minister and party presented cash and garments to students at Hsugyipan Taungpaw Nunnery.

He also paid homage to Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangala and lecturer Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhana of Maha Withuddhayama Alei Taik. In the afternoon, the minister and party attended the Waso robe offering ceremony to members of the Sangha at three Sarthintaiks in Pakokku. Next, the minister, the chairman and officials offered 808 sets of Waso robe to 808 members of the Sangha. Member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Maha Withuddhayama Taik Sayadaw Bhaddanta ViŤara delivered a sermon.

( 6 ) Commander looks into development, agriculture and livestock breeding tasks

Yangon, 17 June - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe arrived at Twantay Township in Yangon South District this morning and inspected regional development tasks, agriculture and livestock breeding tasks.

Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe and party arrived at Dalla where officials from Yangon City Development Committee reported to him on maintenance of Sapha creek bridge on Dalla-Twantay road. After leaving instructions there, the commander and party proceeded to Twantay and inspected the digging of new fish ponds at Shwe Mayin region where paddy cultivation is impossible. Then, the commander inspected the fish breeding ponds of Yangon Command there. At the briefing hall of the camp, Camp In-Charge Major Thet Hlaing reported on the breeding of over 2.2 million fish on over 800 acres of land and distribution of fish. The commander fulfilled the requirements.

Afterwards, Head of Yangon Division Fisheries Department U Khin Maung Win briefed the commander on the digging of fish ponds in Yangon Division and breeding of fish at six fish breeding regions and Shwe Mayin region in Twantay Township. The commander spoke of the need to raise layers and broilers in addition to fish breeding in Shwe Mayin region and to grow kitchen crops on pond banks and vacant land and to distribute fish and meat through tax-free markets in Yangon and other markets. Fish is being bred in ponds on 48,529 acres of land in Yangon Division. Altogether six fish breeding regions Shwe Mayin region, Pathi/Adon region, Pyathataik region, Mae Pyae Kyun region, Yangon Pauk region and other regions and in the township, fish is being bred in ponds on 25,865 acres of land and other townships on 22,664 acres.

After that, the commander and party paid homage to Twantay Shwe Hsan Daw pagoda and made cash donations to the fund of all-round renovation of the pagoda through Chairman of Pagoda Board of Trustees U Zaw Win. The commander then visited the local battalion in the township and inspected the growing of mushroom, production of mushroom strains and the raising of 263 cattle there. He gave instructions on the growing of vegetables on vacant land and the raising of breeders. Then, the commander arrived at the office of Township Peace and Development Council and met with departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Women's Affairs Committee and towns elders at Tawwin Sandaku Hall.

He made a speech on development tasks for the township and heard the reports on preparations for growing monsoon paddy, the work done and future tasks for regional development in the township by Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Aung Myint. The commander gave instructions and attended to the needs.

( 7 ) 12th Meeting of ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (AWGNCB) opened

Yangon, 17 June - The 12th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity was opened at the Myanmar Timber Trade Centre, Yangon, this morning.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, the directors-general and managing directors of the departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Forestry, National Commission for Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, delegates of Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, ASEAN Secretariat, officials and guests. Col Thaik Tun delivered an opening address. The meeting will continue tomorrow.

Yangon, 17 June - In honour of the third conference of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, township WJAs and well-wishers made cash donations at MWJA (central) this afternoon.

Kayah national race study group visits pagodas in Yangon

Yangon, 17 June - Kayah nationals from Loikaw, Dimawhso, Pruhso, Bawlake, Pasawng and Meisei Townships arrived here this afternoon to pay homage to the famous pagodas and to study development of the nation. Along with officials of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Kayah nationals visited the Tooth Relic Pagoda in Mayangon Township.

They then visited Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township and made cash donation there. Afterwards, they paid obeisance to the Shwedagon Pagoda where officials of the pagoda board of trustees explained the history of the pagoda and about religious edifices. Later, Kayah nationals visited Maha Wizaya Pagoda, Sule Pagoda and Botahtaung Pagoda.

( 9 ) 3,997 stimulant tablets seized in Phakant

Yangon, 17 June - On 1 June, a combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, stopped and searched a four-wheel drive vehicle at the check point in Tamakhan village, Phakant Township, Kachin State. The authorities seized Aung Myint, who was on board the car, together with 3,997 stimulant tablets. Action is being taken against Aung Myint, son of U Than Shwe of No 1/11, Ward-1, Seikmu Village, Phakant Township under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station concerned.

Yangon, 17 June - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on a tip-off, searched a passenger bus with number plates 3 Kha/3120, on its way from Taunggyi to Yangon, in Thazi on 1 July 2001 evening, and seized 4.311 kilos of raw opium hidden in a bag from passenger Ma Mya Nu (a) Ma Nge Lay. Thazi Police Station is taking action against Ma Mya Nu (a) Ma Nge Lay, 31, daughter of U Hla Nu of Ward 9, Kale, under sections 15/19(A) of the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Meiktila District Court sentenced her to 20 years' imprisonment under section 19(A) on 23 May 2002.
