1 ) Dinner hosted to Chin Buddhist pilgrims
Yangon, 22 May
- Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin hosted a dinner in honour of the 45-member group of Chin Buddhist pilgrims from Haka, Falam, Tiddim and Tonzang townships in Chin State at Mogok Soonsarsaung on Kaba Aye Hill at 5 pm yesterday.
The minister extended greetings and presented gifts to the members of the Chin pilgrimage group. Leader of the group U Tin Tun spoke words of thanks.
Then, the minister hosted the dinner to the group members.
Under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the group members visited famous pagodas and studied urban development in Sagaing, Mandalay, Bagan, NyaungU and Yangon beginning 16 May. They will also visit the Shwemawdaw Pagoda in Bago and the Kyaikhtiyo
Pagoda in Mon State and will study the development of the State.
Minister attends opening of Football Coach Course and ISD boxing tournament
Yangon, 22 May - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint attended the opening ceremony of first Football Coach Course, conducted by the Sports and Physical Education Department and Myanmar Football Federation, at the training hall of the Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna yesterday.
The trainees were introduced to the minister individually. Then, the minister and Coach Mr David Booth made speeches.
A total of 35 trainees from states and divisions are attending the course which will last till 31 May. The course is conducted under the programme of development of football for youths in states and divisions.
The minister also attended the opening ceremony of the 33rd inter-state/division boxing tournament at Aung
San Gymnasium this morning. The previous year champion Yangon
Division team presented the championship shield to the minister.
Then, the minister made a speech and opened the
competition. A total of 13 teams from states and divisions are
taking part in the competition.

Yangon, 22 - Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun attended the second day of the coordination meeting on Tasks for Special Teak Plantation and Utilizing of Wood Substitute Fuel held at Tawwin Hall of the Forest Department yesterday.
Directors from states and divisions reported on establishing of special teak plantations and widely utillizing of wood substitute fuel, and the meeting came to a close in the evening.

- A ceremony to open the new delivery room of Dawbon Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the delivery room on Minnanda Road, Dawbon Township, Yangon East District, at 8 am today, opened by Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Patron of Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for MCWA Daw Khin Thet Htay.
Then, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe inspected the delivery room.
Next, the opening of the delivery room followed. Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained principles and disciplines of the room.

) ASEAN delegates tour Yangon, Bago divisions
Yangon, 22 May
- The delegates from ASEAN nations who attended the 9th ACEDAC Board and the 4th ASWGAC meetings held in Yangon, led by leader of Myanmar delegation Director-General of the Co-operatives Department U Soe Win, visited the 100-lake agriculture and livestock breeding co-operative syndicate in Letpadan Township, Thayawady District, Bago Division (West) this morning.
Chairman of the syndicate U Kyaw Kyaw explained the functions of the syndicate to them.
Then, they viewed conditions of fish breeding and the demonstration of water pumping with the use of bio-mass power engine.
Later, they went to the agriculture and livestock breeding project of Yangon City Development Committee in Uto-Kya-in region, where they were briefed on conditions of agriculture by member of YCDC Col Thaung Wai.
Afterwards, they viewed agricultural research work and viewed the
scenery in the surrounding areas of the project.

The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by officials of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise of the Ministry of Information, the chairman of MMPA
and officials and responsible personnel from the Chinese Embassy in

MWJA Central Working Committee meets
Yangon, 22 - The meeting 5/2002 of the Central Working Committee of the Myanmar Wariters and Journalists Association was held at the hall of MWJA this afternoon, attended by Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Vice-Chairmen U Than Maung (Than Maung) and U Myint Thein (Myint Thein Aung), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun- Twantay) and central executive committee members.
U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) presided over the meeting and CEC member U Khin Swe (Shwe Sun Nyo) acted as master of ceremonies.
Chairman U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) made a speech and Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun- Twantay) reported on measures undertaken for the decisions made at the previous meeting.
Then, officials concerned reported matters on organizing, finance, publishing, fund-raising and international relations. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the chairman.
The Third Conference of the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association will be held at Kyaikkasan Grounds here on the fourth week of June.
Cartoon show, talks to commemorate

Yangon, 22 May - A coordination meeting on holding talks to commemorate the centennial celebration of the fathers of Myanmar cartoons Cartoonist U Hein Soon and Alinka Kyawswa Cartoonist U Ba Gyan was held at the meeting hall of Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon (Central) this afternoon.
Present at the meeting were Vice-Chairmen of the Asiayon U Shwe Meik and U Saw Hlaing, Secretary U Thant Sin (a) U Hla Tin Tun, Central Executive Committee members cartoonists
U Ngwe Kyi, U Myay Zar,
U Thit Htoon and U Tin Aung Ni.
The organizing committee comprising Chairman U Saw Hlaing and Secretary U Thant Sin (Artist Hla Tin Tun) and members was formed to hold the cartoon show in commemoration of the centennial of Cartoonist
U Hein Soon and Alinka Kyawswa Cartoonist U Ba Gyan at the show-room of the Asiayon at Bogyoke Aung San Market on 20 June. The talks will be held on 23 June.

World Population Day commemorative poster, essay, article competitions to be held
Yangon, 22 May - The Ministry of Immigration and Population and the UNFPA
will sponsor the poster competition to mark the World Population Day
for 2002. The competitors are to depict one of the sub-titles
"Poverty, Population and Development", "Education Builds the Future",
"Health for Success" and "Working Together for Equity".
The competition is divided into five levels level 1 (aged 6-8), level 2 (aged 9-12), level 3 (aged 13-15), level 4 (aged 16-18) and level 5 (aged 19 and above).
Level 1 to 4 will be held at the designated places in cities of States and Divisions on 9 June. Those wishing to take part in those levels are to register at the respective Immigration and National Registration Departments in States and Divisions not later than 7 June. Those wishing to participate in level 5 are to register at the respective Immigration and National Registration Departments not later than 13 June.
First prize for level 1 to 4 is K 50,000, second K 40,000, third K 30,000, and K 20,000 for each of three consolation prizes.
For level 5, first prize is K 75,000, second K 50,000, third K 40,000, and K 30,000 for each of three consolation prizes.
Prizes will be presented at the ceremony of World Population Day to be held in Yangon on 11 July. Works of the respective first prizes will be sent to the International Poster Contest of UNFPA.

Composition (in Myanmar) and invitational article (Open) (in both English and Myanmar) contests in commemoration of the 2002 World Population Day will be held under the title

Yangon, 22 May - The second round of the Second Sports Minister's Trophy Advanced Division Football Tournament for 2002, organized by Myanmar Football Federation, continued at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 4 pm today.
In the match of Group-AA, Home Affairs team beat Commerce team 4-2. Chit Ko Ko of Home Affairs team won the player of the match award.
Myanmar, Vietnam Hatay women's teams goalless draw
Yangon, 22 May - The 2002 Hanoi International Women's Football Tournament continued at Ha Dong Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam, at 3.30 pm local time today.
In the match, selected Myanmar women's football team and selected Vietnam Hatay women's team played goalless draw. At Hanoi Stadium in Hanoi, selected Vietnamese women's team beat selected Vietnam Hanoi women's team 2-0. Selected Myanmar women's team will meet with Shanghai (China) team at 5.45 pm local time on 26 May.

) Drug traffickers sentenced
Yangon, 22 May - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of U Byar Sai of LeU Ward, Mogok on 24 November 2001 and seized 30.62 grams of opium. Action was taken against U Byar Sai, 60, son of U Byar of LeU Ward, Mogok and Daw Alay Mee, 58, daughter of U Kyin Tha under section 15/16 (C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Mogok Township Court handed down five
years' imprisonment under section 15 on U Byar Sai and seven years' imprisonment under section 16 (C) on Daw Alay Mee
on 24 April this year.
Stimulant tablets seized in Lashio
Yangon, 22 May - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information that a deal of narcotic drugs would be made on the Circular Road of Ward 1, Lashio, Shan State (North), lay in wait there on 9 May. The authorities stopped one Myint Naing, son of U Tin Oo of Ward 9, Lashio, and Daw Sein Win, daughter of U Maung Kyaing of Ayethaya Myothit, Taunggyi, and found 30,000 stimulant tablets on them. On further investigation, Daw Khin Thaung Myint, daughter of U Tin Oo,
was also arrested. Action is being taken against them under the
Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station
concerned.
Stimulant tablets possessors sentenced
Yangon, 22 May - A combined team comprising member of the local military intelligence unit and Mandalay Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, raided the house of Aik Lu in Myamarlar Ward, Ward 2, PyinOoLwin, at 1.30 pm on 3 July 2001 and seized nine stimulant tablets.
After further investigation, PyinOoLwin Police Station filed Aik Lu, 36, son of U Ywet Kham and other
culprits Kyaw Than, 42, son of U Zaw Kha of 117, Myopat Road, Ward 6, PyinOoLwin and Daw Hswe Hsaing, 68, daughter of U Aik Kwam of 163/B, Thuta Street, Ward 2,
PyinOoLwin under Sections 15/16 (C), 20(A), 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Phychotropic Substances Law.
On 2 April 2002, PyinOoLwin District Court sentenced Aik Lu to six years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C), Kyaw Than to four
years' imprisonment under Section 15 and Daw Hswe Hsaing to 16
years' imprisonment under Section 20 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Law.
