( 1 )  Secretary-1 receives foreign guests

Yangon, 15 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman and Group Managing Director of the Hutchison Port Holdings of Hong Kong Mr John E Meredith and party at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Present also at the call were Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and General Manager of the Myanmar International Terminals Thilawa Mr Chai Yune Loong. After the call, Mr John E Meredith donated teaching aids worth US$ 6,000 for trainees of the Myanmar Maritime University through Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, who presented a certificate of honour to him. Then, the Secretary-1 handed over the donation to Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.

Secretary-1 accepts books worth US $ 20,000 donated by two US associations

Yangon, 15 March - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted books on various academic subjects presented by Myanmar Youth Association and People to People Association of USA at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 4.30 pm today. Also present were ministers, deputy ministers, heads of department and donors.

First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received the donors, Prof Daw Win Win Kyi of Myanmar who is working for Bergen Community College and Yale University, USA, and Prof Margarita Lopez Berstein of Bergen Community College and Columbia University, USA, at the Guest House. He presented certificates of honour to Prof Daw Win Win Kyi and Prof Margarita Lopez Berstein, who presented the books on behalf of Myanmar Youth Association and People to People Association. The Secretary-1 and party viewed the books. They then posed for group photos together with the donors. A total of 2,477 books worth US $ 20,000 on various academic subjects including education, science and technology, health, culture, religion and sports were presented by the donors.

( 2 ) Secretary-1 inspects construction of White Elephant house

Yangon, 15 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the construction site of the house for the white elephant at the garden on the southern part of Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, here at 2 pm today. The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, deputy ministers, vice-mayor, departmental heads, members of the security committee for the White Elephant and officials.

 

 First, at the office of the work site, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge reported on the work to look after the white elephant, cultivation of plants for feeding it, progress of the construction work of the house, a lake and waterfall. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Then, the Secretary-1 and party viewed the white elephant and inspected the construction of the house, the waterfall, the lake and the garden for the white elephant and left the construction site later in the afternoon.

Secretary-1 inspects all-round construction works at Mindhamma Hill

Yangon,15 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Mindhamma Hill where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labhamuni Image is kept, in Insein Township, here at 3 pm today.

 The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and deputy ministers, the vice-mayor and departmental heads, technicians and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees. First, the Secretary-1 paid homage to the Buddha Image. Then, officials reported on the all-round construction works of the Hill. The Secretary-1 inspected the completion of the religious edifices and places where the flagmast and Patimauk stone inscription will be built. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions and left the Hill in the evening.

Yangon, 15 March - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha met Director-General of Mekong Department of Asian Development Bank Mr Rajat Nag at his office this afternoon. Present also were departmental officials of the ministry.

Yangon, 15 March- Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Director-General of the Mekong Regional Department of the Asian Development Bank Mr Rajat Nag and party at his office at 11 am today. Also present at the call were Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and Director-General of the Foreign Economic Relations Department U Soe Lin.

Yangon, 15 March - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received President Mr Baek Namhoon and party of Kwang Sung Engineering Co of the Republic of Korea at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun, Director-General of Directorate of Industries U Tin Hlaing, Director-General of Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department U San Kyi, Managing Director of Myanma Textile Industries U Oo Thein Maung, officials under the Ministry of Industry-1 and Head of Office U Myint Swe.

National Convention Convening Commission meets
 

Yangon, 15 March - The National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of its office at 3 pm today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and commission members. The secretary of NCCC, National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to the National Convention. The members of the commission took part in the discussions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

( 4Maj-Gen Tin Aye inspects Yangon tax-free markets

Yangon, 15 March - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Tin Aye of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials, inspected tax-free markets in Yangon this morning.

Maj-Gen Tin Aye arrived at the Tamway tax-free market on Kyaikkasan Road in Tamway Township at 7 am. There he inspected vegetable shops of the YCDC, battalions and regiments under the Yangon Command, and Yangon Station, and other vegetable shops, fish, meat and egg shops of YCDC and the Yangon Command, Ngwepinle Chantoe marine product shop of the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd, the shop of Pyi Aung Yadana Fishery Co, Man Myanmar marine product shop and other meat and fish shops, grocery shops of the Yangon Division Purchasing Centre, edible palm oil shop of the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd, private rice shops, and rice shops of the Myanmar Rice Wholesalers Association. He had a cordial conversation with the shop assistants and customers and attended to the needs.

 Maj-Gen Tin Aye and party also inspected the Yankin tax-free market on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Yankin Township, and the Hanthawady tax-free market at the corner of Hanthawady Road and Kyundaw Road and fulfilled the requirements. Later, Maj-Gen Tin Aye and party met with officials concerned, who reported on conditions of the tax-free markets. Next, Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave necessary instructions and fulfilled the needs.

Cash donated for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill

Yangon, 15 March - A ceremony to present cash for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill was held at the Gandakuti Kyaung-dawgyi, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept, on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township at 4.30 pm today. Chairman of the Committee for Construction of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko and officials accepted K 15,559,999 for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill donated by wellwishers Chairman of Gold Uni Investment Co Ltd and Gold Uni Jewellery Co Ltd U Chaung and wife Daw Shwe Sin (Managing Director) of Wingaba Road in Bahan Township and presented a certificate of honour to them.

( 5 ) SWRR Minister inspects exhibition booths

Yangon, 15 March - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Immigration and Population Maj-Gen Sein Htwa arrived at Defence Services Museum at 1 pm today. The minister was welcomed by Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Hlaing Win, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, directors-general and officials. The minister inspected the booth on the 12 National Objectives and the booth on nation-building endeavours. He also inspected the booths of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and the Ministry of Immigration and Population. He gave necessary instructions and left the museum in the afternoon.

A & I Minister inspects exhibition booth

Yangon, 15 March - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by directors-general, managing directors under the ministry and exhibition committee members, inspected demonstration of land utilization, crop cultivation and water supply systems of Thaphanseik Dam, Kindat Dam and Kaboe Diversion Weir of the Mu Valley Project at the booth of Twelve State's Objectives presented for the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition at the Defence Services Museum on Shwe Dagon Pagoda Road this morning. He also inspected presentation of abundant rice production , edible oil sufficiency, export of pulses and beans, extended cultivation of industrial crops and 6 ways for availability of water supply at the exhibition booth of the ministry and left necessary instructions to responsible officials.

( 6 Minister inspects factories

Yangon, 15 March - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung inspected factories in Insein Township, Yangon, today. Accompanied by Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, the minister inspected a garment factory of the Myanma Textile Industries on Mingaladon-Insein Road in Insein at 9.30 am. During the meeting with officials, the minister heard a report on the production and export capacity presented by Factory Manager U Khin Maung Win. Managing Director of the MTI U Oo Thein Maung and General Manager U Mya Thein gave supplementary reports. At a garment factory at the corner of Lower Mingaladon and Thiri-mingala roads, the minister and party inspected the designing sector and storage of raw materials. He then gave instructions. The minister then inspected construction of a three-storey building. After inspecting the quality control sector, the minister met with officials at the briefing hall of the factory.

Minister inspects exhibition booths

Yangon, 15 March - Minister for Labour and for Culture U Tin Winn, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein and directors-general and chairmen of departments and committees under the ministries, inspected display of respective ministries, statistics and gifts exchanged between the leaders of States at the Nation- Building Endeavours Booth of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition at the Defence Services Museum and gave necessary instructions.

Minister inspects Myanma Shipyard

Yangon, 15 March-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint arrived at Myanma Shipyard in Sinmalaik this morning and inspected repair of Thamada Pilot Vessel of Myanma Port Authority. Managing Director U Percy Maung Maung of Myanma Shipyard and Managing Director U Thein Htay of Myanma Port Authority reported on repair work to be performed. Later, the minister and party inspected wooden hull sailing ship Moon Beam being given finishing touches at the jetty of the dockyard.

Afterwards, they inspected building of new ships, water craft being repaired at the jetty and left necessary instructions. Next, they arrived at construction site of 12,000-ton dry-dock where U Percy Maung Maung explained construction of the dock to them. They then inspected construction work there. U Percy Maung Maung and officials of Shandong Agricultural Industry & Commerce Group Corporation conducted them around the site. The minister gave necessary instructions and fulfilled the requirements. The minister also inspected construction of a three-storey building and classrooms at Myanmar Maritime University.

( 7 ) Yangon Division USDA holds coord meeting

Yangon, 15 March - The monthly regular coordination meeting of executives of Yangon Division, District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations took place at the office of Division USDA this morning, attended by member of the Panel of Patrons of USDA (Central) Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe. Brig-Gen Myint Swe made a speech on the occasion. He spoke of the need for successful implementation of the seven future tasks laid down by the USDA Annual General Meeting (2001), for participation in carrying out the five rural development tasks and for boosting organizational strength, unity and qualification of the association. Afterwards, the commander cordially greeted the executives. Then, Brig-Gen Myint Swe and CEC member Col Maung Pa inspected Basic Computer Course, Computer Diploma Course and Electronic Library being conducted by Yangon Division USDA. Later, the second session of the meeting followed. CEC member Col Maung Pa explained facts about the five objectives, four abilities and future tasks.

Tatmadaw columns continue parade drills

Yangon, 15 March-Tatmadaw columns which will take part in the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade continued to practise parade drills from Myoma Grounds to the Resistance Park from 5 am to 10 am today. Under the leadership of Parade Commander Brig-Gen Hla Tun and Reserve Parade Commander Col Than Htay, the Anawrahta column led by Col Thaung Shwe, the Kyansittha column led by Col Tin Hla, the Bayintnaung column led by Col Khin Maung Win, the Nawade column led by Col Han Sein, the Aungzeya column led by Col Khin Maung Latt, the Hsinbyushin column led by Col Myo Thant, the Bandoola column led by Col Aung Min, the Myawady column led by Col Hla Moe and the Aung San column led by Col Thaung Zin participated in the drills. Vice-Chiefs of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint and Brig-Gen Thein Swe, Chairman of Best Parade Column Scrutiny Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Chairman of Security Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, senior military officers and officials inspected the parade drills.

( 8 ) Myanmar and China play 1-1 draw in U-20 soccer

Yangon, 15 March - The Under-20 Asia Youth Group 11 Qualifier for the year 2002 continued in Singapore this afternoon. In the match, Myanmar team played a 1-1 draw with Chinese team. Aung Kyaw Tun opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Myanmar team led the first half. However Chinese team managed to score equalizer in the 15th minute in the second half. Then, both teams tried their best to win the game but tied in a 1-1 draw. Myanmar team gained four points with one win and one draw. Chinese team have a game in their hand with host Singapore team on 17 March.

Hong Kong trounces Singapore 3-0 in qualifier of Asia Youth U-17 Football Tournament

Yangon, 15 March - The second match of group-7 qualifier of Asia Youth Under-17 Football Tournament took place at the football ground of Youth Training Centre (Thuwunna) at 4 pm today. Among those who enjoyed the match were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, officials of the ministry and Myanmar Football Federation, guests and football fans. Taking designated positions in the ground, Hong Kong Youth Selected team and Singapore Youth Selected team, led by referees of Asia Football Federation, saluted the flags by singing the anthems of the two countries. After the players of both teams greeted each other, the captains of the two teams exchanged the pennants. Then, Hong Kong Youth Selected team played against Singapore Youth Selected team and the former completed a 3-0 whitewash win over the latter. On 17 March at 4 pm as the second match, Singapore team will meet Myanmar team.
 

Sports instructors course concludes

Yangon, 15 March- The ceremony to conclude sports instructors course No 1/2002 was held at the hall of Sports and Physical Education Department here this afternoon. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint attended the ceremony and presented prizes and completion certificates to the trainees. First, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint delivered an address. Next, he presented outstanding trainee awards to Cpl Lwan Daung (Defence) (soccer); U Kyaw Zeya (YCDC) (volleyball); Daw Nyo Nyo Win (Commerce) (track and field); and Sgt Kyaw Kyaw Aung (Defence) (boxing). The minister next presented certificates to representatives of trainees. A total of 58 trainees from eight States and Divisions attended the four courses Ñ football, volleyball, track and field and boxing  from 18 February to 15 March.

( 9 ) Drug trafficker sentenced

Yangon, 15 March - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and the local police force, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of Saw Kalay of Yanmyoaung Village, Kyaukkyi Township, and seized 3.347 kilos of marijuana on 2 September 2001 morning. In connection with the case, Natthankwin Police Station took action against Saw Kalay (a) Saw Namu Napha, 47, son of U Sein Pe, under section 15/19(A)/20(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psycho-tropic Substances Law. Toungoo District Court handed down a sentence of 20 years' imprisonment under section 19 (A) on Saw Kalay (a) Saw Namu Napha on 31 January 2002.
