( 2 ) General Maung Aye and wife attend Shwehtidaw hoisting ceremony of ancient Kaunghmulon Pagoda

Yangon, 2 March - A ceremony to hoist Shwehtidaw atop ancient Kaunghmulon Pagoda in Machanbaw Township, Putao District, Kachin State, was held at the pagoda this morning, attended by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San. General Maung Aye hoisted Shwehtidaw atop the pagoda.

Also present were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha from Yangon, Myitkyina and Putao totalling 38, members of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Soe Win, Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Quartermaster-General Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Kyaw Win of the Ministry of Defence, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Brig-Gen Maung Maung Swe, the ministers and their wives, the deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads of departments, departmental officials of Kachin State, Putao District, Putao Township and Machanbaw Township, members of the committee for construction of the pagoda, wellwishers, members of social organizations and local people.

 The ceremony was opened at 8.10 am with the three-time recitation of Namotassa. On the occasion, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party, the wellwishers and the congregation received the Nine Precepts from Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Presiding Sayadaw of Wuntho Monastery of Myitkyina Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Silavamsa. Disciples offered Paritta flowers, water, sand and threads to the members of the Sangha, who recited religious verses.

 Then, the disciples sprinkled Paritta water and sand and tied flowers and threads on the platform of the pagoda. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San offered Seinbudaw to the Presiding Sayadaw of Wuntho Monastery. Then, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San offered alms to the Sayadaw. General Maung Aye also made cash donations for the members of the Sangha present at the ceremony to officials of the Religious Affairs Department.

 Maj-Gen Soe Win offered alms-receiving bowls and offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha; Vice-Admiral Kyi Min and Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Hngetmyatnadaw and offertories; members of the State Peace and Development Council, the commander, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and wellwishers, offertories. Afterwards, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party and wellwishers put jewels into the alms-receiving bowl to offer to the pagoda. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Silavamsa delivered a sermon.

 General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party and the wellwishers shared merits gained for good deeds. Commander Brig-Gen Maung Maung Swe presented gifts to Pro-rector of Yangon Technological University Dr Hla Than and Chairman of MFF Company U Soe Myint, who renovated the pagoda. Pro-rector Dr Hla Than read related documents on construction of the pagoda and handed them over to the wellwishers. Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin made apology to spiritual beings. Silver bowl-carrying team, Sasana flag bearing teams and regal procession troupes took position at the designated places. General Maung Aye conveyed the Seinbudaw.

Next, members of the State Peace and Development Council, the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), the Commander-in-Chief (Air), the commander, the ministers and the deputy ministers conveyed alms bowl, Sasana flag, Hngetmyatnadaw, bells and other relics which were also conveyed to the decorated carriage. Mingala saingwaing and Mingala royal drum troupe sang religious songs. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party sprinkled scented water on Hngetmyatnadaw and conveyed it atop the pagoda through the decorated carriage of Myalayyin Htidaw hoisting team of the Tatmadaw (Air). General Maung Aye and party took positions at the upper reliquary.

At the auspicious time, General Maung Aye and party enshrined the Buddha images and relics. General Maung Aye and party sprinkled scented water on the upper reliquary and closed the reliquary. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party, national races and pilgrims sprinkled scented water on the Seinbudaw, bells, Shwekyathingan and Sasana flag and conveyed them atop the pagoda through the decorated carriage of Myalayyin Htidaw hoisting team of the Tatmadaw (Air).

At the auspicious time, General Maung Aye hoisted Hngetmyatnadaw and Seinbudaw atop the pagoda. General Maung Aye offered Shwekyathingan at Hngetpyawphu. Wellwishers hoisted Shwe Htidaws atop the eight encircling pagodas. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the completion of the Htidaw hoisting ceremony. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party offered " soon " to members of the Sangha.

 The 108 feet high Kaunghmulon Pagoda, a historic pagoda, is situated on the east bank of Malikha River, about 12 miles north of Machanbaw Township. Three sacred relics of Buddha were enshrined in the pagoda under King Siri Dhammasoka in Sasana era 244. The pagoda was renovated for perpetuation. The first and second tiers of the pagoda were hoisted on 27 February and other tiers and Hngetpyawphu and others on 28 February.

( 3 ) General Maung Aye tours Kachin State

Yangon, 2 March - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by members of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Soe Win, Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Quartermaster-General Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo of the Ministry of Defence, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads, left Mandalay for Putao by Tatmadaw aircraft at 10.30 am yesterday.

 The General and party were welcomed at Putao Airport by members of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thein Sein and Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Lt-Gen Kyi Min, Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Brig-Gen Maung Maung Swe, ministers, deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials of Kachin State, Putao District and Township and local people.

 The General and party proceeded to Machambaw by helicopter and cordially met with Tatmadaw members and their families at the hall of the regional battalion. Later, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party went to historic Kaunghmulon Pagoda in Machambaw township where a ceremony to hoist Shwehtidaw atop the pagoda was to be held. The General and party paid obeisance and presented offertories to State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee member Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Afterwards, they inspected Mulashede Suspension Bridge and the environs of Mulashede village.

General Maung Aye and party this morning left Putao for Machambaw by car and attended the ceremony to hoist Shwehtidaw atop the historic Kaung-hmulon Pagoda. Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of the Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Thein Sein, together with Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Maung Maung Swe, Secretary of the Central Oganizing Committee of WVO Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and officials met with members of WVO from Putao General Maung AyeÉ District at Bandoola Hall of Putao on 1 March.

The chairman explained the set-up, objectives and future tasks of WVO to the members. Similarly, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung accompanied by Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodical Enterprise inspected offices of Machambaw Township and Putao District Public Relations and Information Departments on 1 March. The minister also inspected Television re-transmission of Myanma Radio and Television in Putao. Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Than Nyunt who accompanied the General inspected Youth Training Centre in Putao on 1 March and fulfilled requirements. The minister also inspected the office of Putao Township Development Committee and the mobile office for regional development.

( 4 Maj-Gen Aung Htwe inspects regional development in Mongshu Township

Yangon, 2 March- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Aung Htwe of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint and departmental officials, inspected Namkat Creek Bridge in Mongshu Township on 25 February. Maj-Gen Aung Htwe gave instructions on maintenance of the bridge.

 In the afternoon, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe met with Chairman of Mongshu Township Peace and Development Council and members, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of Fire Brigade, War Veterans Organization, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, nurses and townselders at the Township Peace and Development Council Office. Commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint reported on regional development. Maj-Gen Aung Htwe spoke at length on the government's endeavours for regional development, public participation in the task in cooperation with departmental personnel and social association, extended undertaking of agriculture and livestock breeding in reclaimed fallow and virgin lands and speeding up education and health sectors.

 In the evening, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint and officials met members of Loihsaunghtauk Peace and Development Council and officials of gems mining companies at Loihsaunghtauk Gems Land. Deputy Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise and officials reported on location of gems mining blocks and gems mining. Maj-Gen Aung Htwe then gave instructions. Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and Commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint visited Sakka Muni Pagoda and donated cash. On 27 February, Maj-Gen Aung Htwe and party inspected gems mining in the Loihsaunghtauk Gems Land. Maj-Gen Aung Htwe offered Shwethingan to Hantha Muni Pagoda and presented offertories to members of the Sangha led by member of the Central Working Committee of the Sangha Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vilama Bikkhu. The congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vimala Bikkhu. Members of the Sangha recited parittas. Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, the commander and officials presented offertories and merits gained were shared.

( 5 ) Defence Services Medical Conference continues

Yangon, 2 March-The second day sessions of the 12th Defence Services Medical Conference continued at Defence Services Institute of Medicine in Mingaladon this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Defence Services Medical Research and Development Committee Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, rectors of institutes of medicine, commandants of hospitals and medical units under Medical Services, specialists, medical officers, nursing officers, medical cadets and observers. A total of 22 papers on surgery, malaria, hepatitis, traditional medicines, gynaecology and obstetrics, and social medicines were presented at the second sessions. Resource persons are Professor Mr Fing Zhong of Kunming, the People's Republic of China, Dr Pren Pillay of Singapore, Professor S William Sen of UK, Professor Gordan Williens of UK and traditional medicine practitioners of Myanmar. The conference will continue tomorrow.

Commander inspects the camp of Nawade Column

Yangon, 2 March- Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe, accompanied by Commander of No 4 Military Region Commander of Yangon Station Brig-Gen Myo Myint, inspected the hostels of Nawade Column in Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters at 2 pm today.

They were welcomed there by Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Captain Maw Thein, Nawade Column Commander Captain Han Sein, senior military officers and Secretary of Management Committee for Observance of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Staff Officer (Grade-I) (Operations) of Yangon Command Lt-Col Min Naing. At the briefing hall, Column Commander Captain Han Sein reported on setting up of the column, accommodation and welfare tasks. Staff Officer (Grade-I) Cmdr Tin Win of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command reported on security measures for the camp and the marching route of the column. Then, the commander gave necessary instructions. Next, the commander inspected hostels, mess halls and welfare tasks for Tatmdawmen of the Nawade Column.

( 6Minister inspects roads and bridges in Ayeyawady Division

Yangon, 2 March - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials, yesterday morning inspected progress of construction of Wakema-Shwelaung road and Shwelaung-Pantanaw road section and gave necessary instructions.

 Afterwards, the minister inspected construction of Hsamalauk-Maubin road section and gave instructions on meeting the set standard. The minister and party then arrived at Maubin Bridge where the chief engineer (bridge) and the Maubin District senior engineer reported on the work being done for durability of the bridge and waterway of the Maubin river. The minister gave instructions on performance of tasks without any delay and cooperation with the waterway maintenance committee if necessary. They next inspected the building of Maubin bypass and attended to the requirements. After inspecting Maubin-Kyaiklat-Pyapon-Dedaye road, the minister gave necessary instructions and fulfilled the needs. On arrival at Dedaye, the minister heard reports presented by engineers on land preparations for Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye) and the approach road on the bank of Dedaye . He left instructions and attended to the needs.

A ceremony to fix golden bolts to the steel beams of the main bridge of Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye) in Kungyangon Township was held at the bridge construction site at 8.45 am today. Present were Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials. First, Presiding Nayaka of Tawkyaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Dedaye Township Bhaddanta Kusala invested the congregation with the Five Precepts. The commander, the minister, the deputy minister and officials offered provisions to the members of the Sangha. Sayadaws recited the Parittas, followed by sharing of merits gained. At the auspicious time, the commander, the minister, the deputy minister and officials fixed golden bolts to the beams and sprinkled Paritta water and scented water onto them. The minister gave instructions on installation of steel beams and simultaneous completion of approach bridges and approach roads.

( 7 ) Health Minister tours Hmawby and Taikkyi townships

Yangon, 2 March - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein visited hospitals and rural health care centres in Hmawby and Taikkyi Townships today. Together with Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health Dr Hla Pe and officials, the minister this morning inspected the people's hospital in Hmawby Township where Acting Township Health Officer Dr Daw Khin Khin Yee reported on functions of the hospital. Then, the minister explained conditions of health sector being promoted by the State and its aims to students of Yangon Institute of Medicine 2 who were on a field trip at the hospital. After visiting the patients, the minister inspected the drug store, operation theatre, delivery room, laboratory and X-ray room. The minister elaborated on tasks to be implemented for boosting of health care services.

The minister and party then proceeded to Talti Station Hospital in Taikkyi Township. In-charge of the hospital Dr Phyu Phyu Aye reported on functions of the hospital and requirements. The minister inspected the X-ray room, labour room and drug stores and spoke of the need for future tasks according to the rural health promotion project and then attended to the needs. Next, the minister visited Okkan Station Hospital in the same township and fulfilled the requirements.

The minister gave instructions on organizing the public to take part in rural health development tasks being carried out by the State and presented medicines for the hospital. Afterwards, the minister went to Gyobyu rural health care centre and donated medicines, health education pamphlets and posters. In the afternoon, the minister and party headed for Taikkyi Township PeopleÕs Hospital. The minister inspected the operation theatre and X-ray room and attended to the needs. Later, the minister left instructions on tasks to be implemented for improving of health care services.

( 8 ) Minister presents toys, teaching aids to pre-primary students in Bago

Yangon, 2 March- Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, accompanied by Director-General U Sit Myaing of Social Welfare Department and Director U Kyi Lin of Immigration and National Registration Department, arrived at the Basic Education Pre-Primary School of the local battalion in Bawnatgyi Village, Bago Township, yesterday morning.

The minister presented toys, clothes, teaching aids and K 10,000 for the schoolchildren to the headmistress. Similarly, the minister went to Basic Education Pre-Primary School of the local LID and presented toys, clothes, teaching aids and K 10,000 for the schoolchildren to an official. Then, the minister met with service personnel of Bago Township Immigration and National Registration Department, Social Welfare Department and Relief and Resettlement Department and Fire Brigade members. He gave instructions on tasks and functions, morale, discipline and welfare tasks for the service personnel.

Cooperatives Minister meets fish producers in Twantay Township

Yangon, 2 March-Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, accompanied by Director-General U Soe Win of Cooperative Department, Director U Kyaw Thein, Deputy Director U Sein Win of Yangon Division Cooperative Department and officials, inspected the fish breeding ponds undertaken by Yangon Division Township Cooperative Syndicate at Yangonpauk Village in Twantay Township, Yangon Division this morning.

 The minister gave instructions and attended to the needs after hearing reports presented by officials concerned. Then, the minister met with officials of Fish Breeding Cooperative Societies of Twantay Township at the office of Myanma Shwe-mayin Fish Breeding Cooperative Syndicate in Shewmayin Region, Twantay Township. After hearing reports presented by officials of Yangon Division Cooperative Department and Fish Breeding Cooperative Societies, and departmental heads, the minister fulfilled the requirements and gave instructions.

( 9 )  Myanmar youth secures champion, fair play award

Yangon, 2 March- The final match of the First ASEAN Under-17 Youth Football Tournament was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this evening. In the match, Myanmar youth team beat Laotian youth team 4-1. The Myanmar team won the fair play award. At 5th minute, Kyaw Kyaw Soe scored first goal for the Myanmar team. Myo Min Tun scored the second goal at 45th minute, though the Laotian equalized with a penalty at 44th minute. Zaw Htet Aung was sent off because of a foul play at 10th minute in the second-half. Then, only 10-player Myanmar team attacked the Laotian team continuously. Bo Bo Aung headed the ball into the Laotian net as the third goal at 27th minute and he also scored the fourth at 40th minute in the second-half. After the match, the Myanmar team secured the champion. In the third-place match, Indonesian youth team beat host Malaysian youth team 1-0.

Victorious athletes to be accorded grand welcome

Yangon, 2 March - Myanmar youth football team, which deservedly won the championship in the First ASEAN Youth (U-17) Soccer Tournament, will arrive back here at 2 pm tomorrow. They will be accorded grand welcome by members of Myanmar National Olympic Council, Myanmar Olympic Committee and Myanmar Sports Federations, Patrons of Myanmar Sports Federations, families of footballers and fans. The victorious athletes will be conveyed by car en route from Yangon International Airport to Aung San Stadium along Pyay Road and Bogyoke Aung San Street. The victorious team will present the ASEAN Cup at the stadium at 3.30 pm, and it will be honoured there.

Six Nations Basketball Goodwill Meet opens

Yangon, 2 March - Under the arrangement of the Ministry of Sports, the opening ceremony of the Six Nations Basketball Goodwill Meet for the year 2002, organized by Myanmar Basketball Federation and sponsored by A Yar Myay group of companies, was held at the National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna at 9 am today.

It was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice-Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Commander of No 4 Military Region Commandant of Defence Services Record Office Brig-Gen Myo Myint, Chairman of Myanmar Basketball Federation Professor Dr Sein Myint and executives and funs. Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint made an opening address at the ceremony.

 The minister said: Six Nations BasketballÉ Myanamr deem it a great honour to have this opportunity to host the 6 Nations Basketball Goodwill Meet in Yangon. On behalf of the Myanmar Olympic Committee, and on behalf of the Government of the Union of Myanmar, I would like to extend our warm welcome to all the athletes, coaches and officials from friendly Asean countries, Brunei Darusalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, who are here in our Golden Land, Myanmar. If I may recall, the Myanmar Basketball Federation was founded in 1947, since then, every endeavour has been made, to promote the level of basketball in Myanmar. The main objective for hosting this Basketball Goodwill Meet is to extend the cooperation in sports between our Asean Countries, and I am sure that it will further strengthened the unity and solidarity in the region.

And this 6 Nations Basketball Goodwill Meet will also certainly ensure the growth and popularity of the sport throughout the country. Every effort has been made to ensure the smooth running of the tournament and every endeavour has been made to make your short stay in Myanmar a most enjoyable and memorable one.

Mr Foo Gea Wah of' Singapore and U Ye Aung of Sports and Physical Education Department acted as referees in the event. In the womenÕs event, selected Myanmar women team beat selected Singapore team 66-53. U San Myaing and U Tin Maung Tun acted as referees in the event. In the men's event, Singapore beat Cambodia 86-44. Referees were Mr Ng Hong Boon of Malaysia and U Min Soe Myint. The tournament continues at noon tomorrow. Singapore will meet Brunei and Laos Cambodia in the menÕs events. Malaysia and Singapore will meet in the women's event.
