Secretary-1 attends third annual meeting of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science
Yangon, 15 Feb- The third annual meeting of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science was opened at the Institute of Nursing (Yangon) on Bogyoke Aung San Street this morning, addressed by Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general of departments under the Ministry of Health, rectors and officials of the institutes under the Medical Science Department, chairmen and officials of non-governmental organizations, Chairman of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science Dr Ko Ko and central executive members, members of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science and guests.
The Secretary-1 said that at a time when the Government is implementing the national policy for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation, national health plans designed to uplift the fitness and health standard of the entire nation are also being implemented in the health sector.
It is encouraging to see that experienced persons from the various medical sectors are participating in unity in Myanmar Academy of Medical Science. As the national health plans are being implemented with their long experience and knowledge, the provision of health care for the people has improved significantly.
Efforts are being made on self-reliance for the development of the nation by enlisting the strength of national forces. The aims of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, who gave guidance for the formation of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science so that the invaluable knowledge of experienced persons can be put to use beneficially, are materializing today.
Like other academies, Myanmar Academy of Medical Science is discharging duties assigned by the State, standing as a reliable force for the uplift of fitness and health standard of the entire nation and further development of medical science.
One outstanding feature of the national health policy being implemented by the Government is that provision of health care for the people is being undertaken not by the Ministry of Health alone; the ministry has cooperated
with other related governmental departments and non-governmental organizations and enlisted the strength of the private sector and the cooperative sector and the public participation in providing health care for the people. In this way, a health management system which can effectively utilize the collective strength of all these forces has been created.
In accord with the health policy, the invaluable knowledge of medical scientists can now be used in implementing the national health plan.
As the entire national people are participating in implementing the national policy, success has been achieved considerably, and Myanmar Health Vision 2030 has been laid down.
In accord with the aims enshrined in the 30-year long-term plan, a national education promotion special four-year plan and a five-year rural health development plan are being implemented.
To have a study on national health plan, the main work schedules and goals are; a wide coverage of public health care work to border and rural areas; improving of quality of health care services all over the country to narrow the gap of health standard between urban and rural areas; nurturing highly qualified medical and health human resources; encouraging development of research for improving quality of health and medicine; encouraging modern research works for development of Myanmar Traditional Medicine.
As emphasis is widely placed on health work schedule and goals, objectives of national health plan are sure to be implemented in a short period with united efficiency of the people, effective support of departments concerned, active cooperation of social and voluntary associations and concerted efforts of veteran medical practitioners.
To have a glance at the efforts of MAMS, in a short period of two years and six months, the academy has existed firmly as a national force which is reliable for fitness and health standard of entire nation.
In conclusion, he urged those present to make further efforts for promotion of medical teaching, uplift of standard of hospitals for teaching, improvement of medical research and uplift of quality of public health care work, disease control work and health care development in rural areas and for not losing momentum of existing effective endeavours of MAMS.ÑMNA
The State has acknowledged the academy's efficient activities since its formation. The plenary meetings of the academy have been held every six months. The fifth plenary is also the third annual general meeting. In addition to the discussions on the working programmes, talks on the medical science will be also held at the meeting.
It is believed that holding of the Forum on Cancer in Myanmar at the meeting will bring good results to lay down a national level anti-cancer programme.
The book "Conquest of Scourges in Myanmar" is included in the publishing programme of the academy; records on joint eradication of the epidemic diseases in Myanmar by the Ministry of Health and the WHO are featured in the book. The documents include smallpox which had already been eradicated in Myanmar in 1970; leprosy and trachoma which have nearly been eradicated in Myanmar and iodine deficiency and polio which will be wiped out in two or three years. It is a milestone on health for not only Myanmar Academy of Medical Science but also the State
The national education promotion four year special plan is being implemented for turning out highly qualified human resources in health sector and special emphasis is being placed on uplift of educational level of the institutes, training schools and teaching hospitals and promotion of traditional medicine.
The government provided modern hospital equipment, diagnosis and operation equipment to general hospitals in major cities, teaching hospitals, institutes of medicine and universities on health for improvement of public health care services and promotion of medical education, spending US$ 12 million in three years.
In order to apply information and communication techniques in treatment and teaching aspects, e-education Resource Centres and e-libraries, satellite communication system and computer networks were established in Yangon and Manadalay and hospitals and institutes in major cities.
At a time when the government is making arrangements for development of treatment, teaching method and medical education and promotion of high quality health care services, the role of medical experts has become more important. In order to effectively apply their force, it is necessary for Myanmar Academy of Medical Science to make systematic arrangements on various aspects in health sector.
He urged Myanmar Academy of Medical Science to continue to undertake noble national tasks such as development of medical science, promotion of health care services, turning out highly qualified human resources on health, development of research work, drafting of national health plan, application of modern techniques and spreading of medical science of international standard in universities, training schools and hospitals.
