Attach' Col Kasem Nakpun of Thai Embassy and wife and officials visited Shwedagon Pagoda this morning. The Thai Admiral and party were here on a friendly visit at the invitation of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye.
The delegation accompanied by officials arrived at Shwedagon Pagoda at 9 am today and were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Chairman of Work Committee for All-round Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, members of the pagoda board of trustees and officials.
The delegation paid obeisance to the pagoda and had documentary photo taken. The Thai Admiral and wife signed in the
visitors' book and made cash donation to the pagoda funds. Members of the pagoda board of trustees presented a photo of the pagoda to them.
In the afternoon, the
delegation arrived at Mindhamma Hill where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Laba Mumi Image is kept. They were welcomed there by Secretary of the Committee for Construction of the Image Cmdr Khin Maung Oo (Navy), scholars, members of the pagoda board of trustees and officials. Pro-rector (Admin) Dr Hla Pe of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and officials conducted them around the Pagoda. The Admiral and party paid obeisance to the image, made cash donations and left
there.
Thai FM and delegation conclude visit
Yangon, 8 Feb - Dr Surakiart Sathirathai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and his 18-member delegation left Yangon by air this morning after paying a goodwill visit to the Union of Myanmar from 6 to 8 February 2002 at the invitation of U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar.
The Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs and party were seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Thai Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Oum Maolanon and members of the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon.
While in Myanmar, the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs paid courtesy calls on General Maung Aye, Vice- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, on separate occasions on 7 February 2002.
During the visit, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Dr Surakiart Sathirathai signed the Agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxas on Income on 7 February at the Zeya Thiri Beikman.
Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand held discussions on bilateral matters in Ngapali on 7 February.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Mr Tej Bunnag who accompanied the Thai Minister for Foreign Affairs also called on Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 7 February 2002 and held discussions on bilateral

Union Flag conveyed from City Hall to Thiha Dipa Sports Ground in Thanlyin
Yangon, 8 Feb -The Union Flag, which rested for one year at the City Hall, was conveyed from there to Thiha Dipa Sports Ground in Thanlyin, Yangon South District, this morning under the Union Flag relay programme in four districts in Yangon Division.
Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay took out the Union Flag from the silver bowl in the guest hall of the Mayor's Office at 6.40 am.
Flanked by four officers of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Myanma Police Force, Union nationals and students, the Mayor carried the flag to the designated place in front of the City Hall on Maha Bandoola Street with the accompaniment of the Myodaw drum troupe.
The Mayor handed over the Union Flag to Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Union Day Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe.
The Commander then handed over the flag to Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Hlaing.
Lt-Col Sein Hlaing conveyed the flag onto the Union Boat and planted it in the silver bowl at 6.50 am.
The Union Flag flanked by the four officers of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and MPF and Union nationals, the Union Boat left for Thanlyin through Maha Bandoola Street, Maha Bandoola Bridge, Yamonna Street, Shukhintha Ring Road, Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge Approach Road and Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge.
The Union Flag was accorded a rousing welcome along the road by vast multitudes of people and a great number of members of Township Peace and Development Councils, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar War Veterans Organization, Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs, nurses, school heads, teachers, students and departmental employees waving miniature flags, putting up banners and archways across the road.
On arrival at the archway of Yangon South District near Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge, Lt-Col Sein Hlaing took out the flag from the silver bowl on the Union Boat and conveyed it, flanked by the four officers of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and MPF and Union nationals.
He handed over the flag to Chairman of Thanlyin Township Peace and Development Council U Kyin Han.
The flag was conveyed by relay teams of Thanlyin Township USDA, Township Immigration and National Registration Department, Packaging Factory, Thanlyin No 1 Oil Refinery, Thanlyin Township Auxiliary Fire Bridge, No 1 Thanlyin Township Basic Education High School, District Myanma Agriculture Service, No 3 Thanlyin Township BEHS, nurses, Thanlyin Township Development Affairs Committee, Thanlyin Township Red Cross Brigade, No 4 Thanlyin Township BEHS, Shoes Factory, Thanlyin Glassware Factory, No 10 Saw Mill, Thanlyin Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council, Kyauktan Township USDA and other departments and associations.
At the archway of Thiha Dipa Sports Ground, Secretary of Yangon South District USDA U Lwin Oo handed over the flag to District Commissioner of Yangon South District General Administration Department U Pe Thant.
District Commissioner U Pe Thant conveyed the flag to the designated place in the sports ground and handed it over to Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Hlaing. Lt-Col Sein Hlaing conveyed the flag, flanked by the four officers of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and MPF and Union nationals, and planted it in the silver bowl on the stage. The Guard of Honour of Yangon Command and the people saluted the flag to the strains of the National Anthem played by the military band of the Tatmadaw (Navy).
The sports ground was crowded with the people who came to salute the flag, and they were entertained with the Anyeint troupe of Mobile Public Relations Unit, Myawady Anyeint and documentary
films.

Union Day delegates tour

Yangon, 8 Feb-Cultural troupe members from states and divisions and Union Day delegates of Union Solidarity and Development Association, who are here to attend the 55th Anniversary Union Day flag-hoisting ceremony and dinner, accompanied by Head of Study Group Joint Secretary of Reception and Accommodation Sub-Committee Maj Myint Tun, the supervisors and officials toured downtown Yangon today.
First, the study group members arrived at Memorial to Fallen Heroes at 6.30 am where they were welcomed by Chairman of the Subcommittee for Maintenance of the Memorial to Fallen Heroes Brig-Gen Myo Myint, and laid a flower
basket.
They proceeded to Shwedagon Pagoda where they were welcomed by members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.
After hearing the salient points of the pagoda, they paid obeisance to the Buddha images. They also viewed round the Maha Buddhology Museum.
Then, they arrived at Maha Wizaya Pagoda where they were briefed by members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees on the history of the pagoda. Before leaving for No 1 Transit Centre (Bayint-naung), they paid obeisance to the
pagoda.

Study group of Wa region
arrives Yangon
Yangon, 8 Feb-A group comprising 17 members of the Sangha and 39 lay persons of Mongmaw Region, accompanied by Director of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Mo Zaw Shwe, arrived in Mandalay at 4.30 pm on 4 February via Lashio, Hsipaw and PyinOoLwin.
After paying obeisance to Maha Myat Muni Pagoda in Mandalay, they left for Meiktila where they paid obeisance to famous pagodas on 5 February.
The group at 3 pm on 5 February arrived in Bagan-NyaungU and paid obeisance to Bhu Pagoda, Lawkananda Pagoda, Dhamma Razaka Pagoda, Alodawpyi Pagoda and others.
They left Bagan at 12.30 pm on 6 February and arrived in Magway at 5.30 pm where they paid homage to Myathalon Pagoda.
This morning, the group arrived in Pyay and paid homage to Shwesandaw Pagoda and Shwebontha Muni Pagoda there.
This evening, they arrived at Withakha Tazaung of Kaba Aye Hill, Yangon where they will spend the night.

) Stone inscriptions bearing Myanma Education Goal unveiled
Yangon, 8 Feb -A ceremony to unveil the stone inscription bearing Myanma Education Goal was held at No 2 Basic Education Middle School, Botahtaung Township, this morning. It was attended by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon Command Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt, Commander of Yangon Station Commandant of Defence Services Records Office Brig-Gen Myo Myint, directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards under the ministry, local authorities and headmasters, teachers and students in the township.
The stone inscription bearing " To create an education system that can generate a learning society capable of facing the challenges of the Knowledge Age
" was formally unveiled.
A similar ceremony was held in conjunction with the opening of e-Library at No 2 BEHS, Latha Township, this morning. It was attended by Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Minister U Than Aung and others. The stone inscription was formally unveiled at the ceremony. Old student Dr Daw Ohmar Moe Myint and gold medalists formally opened the e-Library. Dr Daw Ohmar Moe Myint handed over the cash donation amounting to K 1.55 million to Minister U Than Aung.
The commander, the minister and party also attended a similar ceremony at No 1 BEHS in Latha Township at noon. Likewise, a ceremony to unveil the stone inscription bearing the Myanmar Education Goal

Training Workshop on Seafood Safety opened
Yangon, 8 Feb - The opening ceremony of Training Workshop on Seafood Safety practising Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system organized by the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries was held at the meeting hall of Quality Control Laboratory in Research and Development Centre of the department in Thakayta Township this morning.
It was attended by Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein and departmental heads.
Director-General of the Fisheries Department U Than Tun made an opening speech and Laboratory Officer U Tint Wai explained about the quality control laboratories.
Then, the ministers, departmental heads and trainees viewed round the HACCP system laboratory apparatus and laboratories and shrimp fry breeding camp of the department.
Altogether 20 trainees from marine product processing companies are attending the 4-day course.
National Sanitation Week Central Leading Committee meets
Yangon, 8 Feb - The Central Leading Committee for the Fifth National Sanitation Week held its second meeting at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Health this morning, attended by Chairman of the committee Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister Prof Dr Mya Oo, the committee members, directors-general of the respective ministries, NGOs and officials.
The minister spoke of the need for organizing the entire people to carry out the public health care services as national movement for the national sanitation week activities were the most fundamental ones. He called for implementation of tasks for ensuring clean water in cooperation with respective ministries at a time when the State was implementing projects with momentum for water supply in rural areas.
After the meeting, Chairman of Myanmar Music Asiayon Accordion U Ohn Kyaw donated K 20,000 for the polio elimination tasks to the minister.
