YANGON, 7 Feb.. - At the invitation of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye,  Supreme Commander of Royal Thai Armed Forces Admiral Narong Yuthavong (RTN) and wife Mrs  Puntipa Yuthavong and delegation arrived here by special flight at 8.20 am to pay a goodwill visit here.  General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San welcomed them at Yangon International Airport.

Present at the airport together with General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya San to welcome the Thai  Admiral and delegation were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Military  Intelligence Lt-Gen.. Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, member of the State Peace and  Development Council Maj-Gen. Thura Shwe Mann of the Ministry of Defence, Commander-in-Chief  (Navy) Vice-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen. Myint Swe, Chairman of Yangon  Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen. Myint Swe,  Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director of Ordnance Services Brig-Gen. Hla  Tun and their wives, Minister Counsellor Mr Raden Suwannakorn of Royal Thai Embassy, Defence  Attaché Col Kasem Nakpun and wife and officials.

General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya San and the welcoming party and Admiral Narong Yuthavong and delegation proceeded to the reception hall of the airport. General Maung Aye and Admiral Narong  Yuthavong took the salute of the Guard of Honour. They inspected the Guard of Honour. The Thai  Vice-  Admiral and wife together with General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San proceeded to  Tatmadaw Guest House in a motorcade. General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya San cordially greeted  Admiral Narong Yuthavong (RTN) and Mrs Puntipa Yuthavong, and left the guest house at 9 am.

Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San hosted a dinner in honour of visiting Supreme Commander of Royal Thai Armed Forces Admiral Narong Yuthavong (RTN) and wife Mrs Puntipa Yuthavong and  party at Zeya Thiri Beikman on Konmyint-tha this evening.

Also present at the dinner were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of
Military Intelligence Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, members of the State Peace  and Development Council, the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), the Commander-in-Chief (Air), the chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council the Commander of Yangon Command,  the deputy minister for foreign affairs, high-ranking officers of the Ministry of Defence and the military  attaché of Myanmar to Thailand and their wives, the defence, army and air attaché' of Thailand to  Myanmar and wife and guests. During the dinner, a variety of songs and music were presented by artists  of the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture, and cultural dances were presented after the dinner.


(3) Agreement between Myanmar and Thailand signed

YANGON, 7 Feb. - A ceremony to sign the agreement on avoidance of  double taxation between
Myanmar and Thailand was held at the hall  of Zeya Thiri Beikman in Kon-myinttha here this afternoon. It was  attended by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development  Council Deputy Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services  Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of  the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt,  member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen.  Thura Shwe Man of the Ministry of Defence, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice- Admiral Kyi Min,  Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen. Myint Swe, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and  Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen. Myint Swe, ministers, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, departmental heads, Minister for Foreign Affairs of  Thailand Dr Surakiart Sathirathai and party and Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Oum Maolanon. Minister for Finance and Revenue of Myanmar U Khin Maung Thein and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand Dr Surakiart Sathirathai signed the agreement and exchanged the documents. Afterwards, the ceremony came to a close.

(4) Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of 55th Anniversary Union Day Exhibition

YANGON, 7 Feb. -The opening ceremony of the 55th Anniversary  Union Day Commemorative
Exhibition (2002) was held at the  Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Chairman of the Central Committee for Observance of the 55th  Anniversary Union Day for 2002  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt.

Also present were member of State Peace and Development Council  Adjutant-General of the Ministry of  Defence Maj-Gen. Thein Sein, Quartermaster-General Maj-Gen.  Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo,  Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council  Commander of Yangon Command Brig-  Gen. Myint Swe, ministers, deputy ministers, members of the  Central Committee, Chairman of the Subcommittee for organizing the exhibition Deputy Minister for  Information Brig-Gen. Aung Thein and  subcommittee members, officials of State Peace and  Development Council Office, departmental officials,  representatives of social associations, teachers,  students and guests. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Aung Thein formally opened the exhibition.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party and guests viewed around the central booth on propagation of Union  Spirit, the booth on " Myanmar the origin of human beings, booths on ancient Pyu civilisation, the first, second and third Myanmar empires, cultures of national races, ministries and the News and Periodicals  Enterprise of the Ministry of Information and then the ceremony came to an end. The exhibition remains  open from 9 am to 5 p.m. daily up to 13 February.

Secretary-1 receives Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development  Council of the Union of Myanmar  Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt received  Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Dr Surakiart Sathi-rathai and  party at the Ministry of Defence at 9.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win  Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung  Win, Director-General of the  Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Ambassador of  Thailand to  the Union of Myanmar Mr Oum Maolanon.


(5) Wife of Thai Supreme Commander visits Myanma Gems Museum

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Mrs Puntipa Yuthavong, wife of the Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, and party visited Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon. They  were  conducted round the museum by Deputy Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise under the Ministry  of  Mines U San Lwin and officials.

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Visiting Supreme Commander of Royal Thai Armed Forces Admiral Narong
Yuthavong (RTN) and party visited the Memorial to Fallen Heroes this morning. The visiting Supreme  Commander of Royal Thai Armed Forces and party, together with Brig-Gen. Hla Tun of the Ministry of  Defence and officials, arrived at the Memorial to Fallen Heroes on Arzani Road in Yangon at 10 am  today.

They were welcomed there by Chairman of the Maintenance Committee for Memorial to Fallen Heroes  Commander of Yangon Station Brig-Gen. Myo Myint and officials. The Supreme Commander of Royal  Thai Armed Forces paid salute to fallen heroes laying a basket of flowers.

Then, he viewed the Memorial to Fallen Heroes and signed in the  visitors' book. Later, the Supreme
Commander and party proceeded  to the Drug Elimination Museum at the corner of Kyundaw and
Hanthawady Streets in Kamayut Township of Yangon at 2.45 p.m.  They were welcomed there by
Secretary of the Central Committee  for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of the Myanmar Police  Force Police Maj-Gen. Soe Win and officials, who conducted the  guests around the museum. After  signing in the visitors' book, the  visiting Supreme Commander exchanged souvenirs with Police Maj-Gen. Soe Win.

Minister receives Indian Ambassador

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Minister for Education U Than Aung received Ambassador of India Mr Vivek Katju, who had completed his tour of duty in Myanmar, at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of Yangon University this  afternoon. Present were Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt and directors-general under the ministry.

Minister receives guests

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen. Saw  Lwin received Chairman of
Victoria Entertainment Resort Club Ltd  Mr Drake Poh and party at his office at 1 p.m. today. They
discussed  matters related to the construction project of the Yadana Kyun Hotel  in Kawthoung. The
Minister gave instructions on required equipment  to open the hotel, training of the staff and other
preparations. Also  present at the call were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism  Brig-Gen. Aye Myint Kyu, Managing Director of the Myanma Hotels  and Tourism Services U Kyi Tun and officials.


(6)  Minister inspects booths of Marine & Livestock Breeding Products Expo

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Patron of the Central Committee for Organizing Myanma Marine and Livestock Breeding Products Expo 2002 Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone this morning arrived at  Yangon Trade Centre where the Expo will be held. He was welcomed by Chairman of the Central  Committee Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan and officials. Then, the minister  inspected the preparation of booths of local and foreign companies, and gave instructions on timely  completion of the booths and keeping them neat and tidy.

Rural development tasks inspected in Kachin State

YANGON, 7 Feb.-The CEC Member of the Union Solidarity and Development Council Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, accompanied by Director-General of the Department for Promotion and  Propagation of the Sasana U San Lwin and officials, arrived at Putao in Kachin State on 30 January  morning.

Then, Commander of Northern Command Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe and the CEC member
proceeded to Machambaw and met with township level departmental officials and township USDA
members. The CEC member spoke of the need for implementing five rural development tasks and
presented books on national culture and moral character. They next visited Sayadaw U Pandicca of
Buddhist Missionary Monastery in Naungkhaing Village, Machambaw, supplicated matters on religious  affairs and presented offertories to him. They met with officials of Putao District Peace and  Development  Council at Khakaborazi guest house at 5 p.m.

On 31 January morning, they heard reports presented by Chairman of District Peace and Development  Council Lt-Col Maung Myo and officials on progress of construction of the pagoda at the briefing hall. Next, they paid homage and presented offertories to Sayadaw U Obhasa of the Kaunghmulon Buddhist  Missionary Monastery. The commander, the minister and party also met with USDA members of Putao  District at the Putao Township Hall.

They then visited the Putao Buddhist Missionary Monastery (Central) and presented offertories to
Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indobhasa. On 1 February morning, the commander, the minister and party
inspected regional development tasks in Kulasheidi Village and visited the Wuntho Kyaung in Myitkyina.  After that, they visited Thameiddawdaya Nunnery and Hill Region Missionary Monastery (Central) in  Myitkyina.

On 3 February morning, they visited Panwa Buddhist Missionary Monastery and inspected land
preparation of the pagoda hillock. In the afternoon, they met with USDA members of Chipwe  Hsawtlaw  Township. On 5 February, the CEC member met with USDA members from Myitkyina,  Waingmaw, Phakant townships and Mogaung at Myitkyina Town Hall. Afterwards, the minister  inspected Mogaung  Nunnery under construction and visited the Shwethalyaung Pagoda. He presented  offertories to the  chairman Sayadaw of Mogaung Township Sangha Nayaka Committee. On 6 February  morning,  Commander Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe and USDA CEC member U Aung Khin attended  the meeting on holding a ceremony to hoist Htidaw atop the Kaunghmulon Pagoda.

Minister meets Pungpahkyem student team

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National  Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met student  excursion team of Pungpahkyem region in Mongton Township at Development Affairs Department this evening. The students are  visiting famous pagodas and
development projects in Yangon at the  invitation of the Chairman of the Working Committee for
Development of Border Areas and National Races.

Also present were directors-general of departments under the Ministry for PBANRDA and officials.  The  minister presented gifts to the team members. A Shan girl, Ma Nang Kham Nom, on behalf of the  team,  spoke words of thanks. Accompanied by Deputy Director Capt. Kyaw Min of Department for  Development of Border Areas and National Races, the team visited Hlaingthaya Industrial Zone in the  morning. Officials conducted them around the various industries. They also paid obeisance to Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Laba Muni Image, and viewed the white elephant. In the afternoon, they visited Myanma Radio and TV. Deputy Director-General of MRTV Lt-Col Thein Aung extended greetings.  They  studied programming and broadcasting studios. They then visited the Defence Services Museum.

Mekong Tourism Forum to be held

YANGON, 7 Feb. - A first coordination meeting for holding the 7th Mekong Tourism Forum and 13th  Meeting of the Working Group on the Greater Mekong Sub-region from 4 to 6 April jointly organized  by  the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and Pacific Asia Travel Association was held at the meeting hall  of  the ministry on 5 February morning. It was attended by Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism  Brig- Gen. Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director U Kyi Tun and  departmental officials, hotels and tourism entrepreneurs of PATA members, delegates of air lines and discussed holding the meetings.


(7) MMCWA to hold invitational article competition

YANGON, 7 Feb.-Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association will hold an invitational article competition to mark its eleventh anniversary which falls on 30 April. The entries need to reflect activities of associations at different levels, and success. Articles should be written between 3,000 and 5,000  words with the title of the writer's choice and point of view. Entries are to be sent to Myanmar Maternal  and  Child Welfare Association (Central) at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Streets, South  Okka-lapa  Township, Ph 571123, 571758 by 4 p.m. on 10 April. Handsome prizes first, second, third  and ten  consolation prizes  will be presented to winners at the ceremony to mark the eleventh  anniversary of the  association to be held in April 2002. Any interested person may take part in the  competition. Information  on activities of the association can be obtained at the associations at different  levels.

57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Observance Leading Committee meets

YANGON, 7 Feb.-The Leading Committee for Observance of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day  for 2002 held its fourth coordination meeting at the hall of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon.  Present were Chairman of the Leading Committee member of the State Peace and Development  Council  Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen. Kyaw Win, Chairman of the Management  Committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen.  Myint Swe, ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), the Chief of Staff (Air), members of the Leading  Committee, chairmen of respective work committees and officials. The chairman of the Leading  Committee made a  speech.

Then, Secretary of the Leading Committee Deputy Adjutant-General Col Khin Soe reported on the
resolutions passed in the third coordination meeting and progress of work; Secretary of the  Management  Committee General Staff Officer (Grade 1) of Yangon Command Headquarters Lt-Col  Min Naing on  tasks carried out; Deputy Chief of Armed Forces Training (Army, Navy and Air)  Maj-Gen. Win Myint on plans implemented by the military parade group; member of the Committee for  Exhibition of Community  Welfare Tasks Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen. Win Sein on progress of  work; Chairman of the Committee for Holding Literary and Arts Contest Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myat  Hein on progress of work; Vice-Chairman of the Work Committee for Holding Literary and Photo  Contest Director-General of the  Myanma Radio and Television under the Ministry of Information U  Khin Maung Htay on progress of  work; Chairman of the Work Committee for Holding Poem and Arts  Contest Deputy Minister for Culture  U Soe Nyunt on progress of work; Director of the Higher  Education Department of the Ministry of  Education U Naing Tun Hlaing on progress of work of the  Work Committee for Holding University,

(8)  Maj-Gen. Ye Myint looks into regional development tasks in Mandalay

YANGON, 7 Feb. - Accompanied by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council  Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen. Ye Myint and officials, member of the State Peace and  Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint inspected the road linking Aungpinle ring road and Madaya  road near Kyweyaygon Village to the north-east of Mandalay Hill on 5 February morning. He was  welcomed and reported on construction tasks by Secretary of Mandalay City Development Committee  Lt-  Col Maung Pu and committee members. Then, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, the commander and party  inspected  construction of the road and Shwekyin Creek Bridge near Kyweyaygon Village.

He gave necessary instructions to the officials. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint then visited Yeywa hydel power
project where Deputy Superintending Engineer U Win Kyaw of Myanma Electric power Enterprise,
Chairman of Kyaukse District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein and officials. At  the briefing hall of the project, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Win Kyaw reported to Maj-Gen. Ye Myint on the project. Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein made a report on assistance being rendered by the district  Peace and Development Council. Executive Engineer U Aung Hlaing added a report on fuel and use of  machinery at the project.

Maj-Gen. Ye Myint gave instructions and left for Mandalay People's Hospital where kidney transplant  was performed in the afternoon. Minister for Health Maj-Gen. Ket Sein and officials welcomed him. The  kidney transplant was shown on close circuit TV. Director-General of the Medical Research  Department  Renal Specialist Dr Paing Soe briefed on the operation to them. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, the  commander, the  deputy commander and party then met with departmental heads at the hall of MCDC.  He made a speech.  Commander Brig-Gen. Ye Myint reported to Maj-Gen. Ye Myint on transportation,  education, health and water supply in the division. After leaving instructions, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and  party arrived at  Mandalay Railway Station where Managing Director U Min Swe of Myanma Railways  and staff welcomed them.

The managing director briefed on construction of station building. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint made a speech  and visited Dahattaw monastery in Maha Aungmyae Township in Mandalay where he paid obeisance  and  presented offertories to Chairman Sayadaw of Mandalay Division Sangha Nayaka Committee  (Shwekyin)  Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sujatasara.

He also offered provisions to Masoeyein Taikthit Sayadaw Vice-Chairman Sayadaw of State Sangha  Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rahta Guru Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa, State Ovada  Cariya  Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma-jotika Abhidhaja Maha Rahtta Guru Bhaddanta  Medhiya- bhivamsa of Naya monastery. Afterwards, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party visited Mahamuni  Yokeshindaw image and offered flowers and light. After paying obeisance to Yaydaw Sayadaw  Saddhammajotikadhaja  Bhaddanta Pannavamsa, he inspected completion of the diamond orb to be  offered to the image and left  there.


(9) Drug traffickers sentenced

YANGON, 7 Feb. - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Muse Special  Anti-Drug Squad, at the request of the People's Republic of China, searched a house of Shan Chao  Meng of Shwethamin Ward, Muse on 4 September 2001 and seized one litre of opium liquid, 30 grams  of dried  opium, 600 grams of opium residue and a pipe for using heroin.

In connection with the case, Shan Chao Meng, 30, son of U Shan Shin Hui of Shwethamin Ward in
Muse, Shan Chao Shin, 21, son of U Shan Shin Hui and Yin Lao Pha, 17, son of U Yin Jia Sui of Kalai  Village in Kutkai Township were booked by Muse Police Station under Section 15/19(A)/ 21 of  Narcotic  Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 21 December 2001, Muse District Court  passed a 12 years'  imprisonment under Section 19(A) and a death sentence under Section 20(B) on  Shan Chao Meng to  serve separately, and a 12 years' imprisonment under Section 19(A) each on Shan  Chao Shin and Yin  Lao Pha.


INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION

International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University will open in June for 2002 academic year. The first semester for academic year 2002 begins in June and ends in October. The second semester begin on  1st December and ends in March 2003. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the  Matriculation or  equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or  B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for  Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not  older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the  requirements or not.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Foreign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country  of their residence, or at the  examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers,  namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The  closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001.  The written  entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate  who passes the  written examination must sit  for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their  residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is  liberal and flexible  enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students.  The  students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any  recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.

VISA & OTHER EXPENSES

Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care  of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding  and messing for foreign students will be provided  free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
