(1) Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of Lawka Chantha Ordination Hall of Nikaya Sarthintaik in Dagon Myothit (South)YANGON, 5 Feb.- The opening ceremony of Lawka Chantha Ordination Hall of the Nikaya Sarthintaik on Pale Yadana Street, Dagon Myothit (South) Township, Yangon East District, was held in conjunction with the merit-sharing at 8 am today. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and presented offertories to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of the Sarthintaik.
Also present were Presiding Nayaka of the Sarthintaik Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and members of the Sangha, member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence, ministers, deputy ministers, the Vice-Mayor, the deputy commander, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, local authorities, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, and wut associations and guests.
First, the opening ceremony was held in front of the ordination hall. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than and Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Aung Ko formally opened the ordination hall. Then, the Secretary-1 sprinkled scented water onto pillars of the archway of the ordination hall. After the opening ceremony, the merit-sharing ceremony followed on the first floor of the ordination hall. Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara administered the Five Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited the Prittas.
Next, Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than supplicated on construction of the ordination hall. In his supplication, Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than said that it was a great pleasure to have the opportunity of paying obeisance to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha led by the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaws who were present at the merit-sharing ceremony held today. Paying serious attention to promotion and propagation of Five Nikaya and Pitaka treatises, Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee formed a Monastery Board of Trustees and constructed buildings such as the Nayaka Kyaunghsaung, that for members of the Sangha to take up residence, lecture hall, Soonsarhsaung and ordination hall on a plot donated by the Government in Ward 26, Dagon Myothit (South) Township possessing the characteristics of a Sarthintaik with the support of the State.
After building those religious edifices, the Chairman Sayadaw opened Nikaya Sarthintaik and is giving lectures on Five Nikayas and Pitaka treatises to trainee monks from various parts of the country, he said. As we lay persons have built the ordination hall on a plot in Ward 25 close to the Nikaya Sarthintaik, they got the opportunity to make meritorious deeds crucial for perpetuation, promotion and propagation of the Sasana, he added. He said he was pleased to have the opportunity to build the ordination hall since it plays a leading role among religious edifices.
The building was constructed with donations of K 23.15 million by wellwishers from military and civil
organizations and departments in Yangon Division. He supplicated the Sayadaws to carry out rituals on the occasion held today in line with Vinaya as the ordination hall is to be donated to members of the Sangha led by the Chairman Sayadaw with merit-sharing ceremony. To sum up, he wished Sayadaws and members of the Sangha who were present at the ceremony to further carry out tasks for promotion and propagation of the Sasana with mental and physical wellbeing and we lay persons have the chance to attain Nivana doing generous donations. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt presented offertories to the Myingyan Sayadaw. Next, Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than and wife Daw Malar Tint, ministers, deputy ministers and departmental heads presented offertories to members of the Sangha. Afterwards, the Magway Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.
Shwehtidaws hoisted atop Kyunhsinmin Pagoda, Shwesigon Pagoda in Salingyi TownshipYANGON, 5 Feb.- A ceremony to hoist Shwehtidaws atop ancient historic Kyunhsinmin Pagoda and Shwesigon Pagoda in Letpadaung Masoeyein Village in Salingyi Township was held in conjunction with the opening ceremony of Sasana Visodhani Maha Ordination Hall near the pagodas at 9 am yesterday, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt.
Also present were Presiding Nayaka of Amarapura Maha Gandayon Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Maha Dhammakahtika Bahu-janahitadhara Bhaddanta Kun-dalabhivamsa and members of the Sangha, the Secretary-1 and party, member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen. Soe Naing, local authorities, departmental personnel members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, social organizations, wut associations, disciples, wellwishers Dr Tha Yin Myat-Daw Nwe Nwe Aye and daughter Chaw Su Myat and local people.
First, wellwishers Dr Tha Yin Myat, wife Daw Nwe Nwe Aye and daughter Chaw Su Myat formally opened the Sasana Visodhani Maha Ordination Hall. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt unveiled the stone inscription of the ordination hall. Next, the Secretary-1 and the wellwisher family sprinkled scented water on the stone inscription. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 offered robes and provisions to Sayadaw Bhad-danta Kundalabhivamsa and Amarapura Maha Gandayon Kyaungtaik Gan-thavacaka (Lecturer) Saya-daw Bhad-danta Avudha who would be reordained at the newly-opened Sasana Viso-dhani Ordination Hall. Then, the reordination ceremony followed.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1, the wellwishers and disciples donated provisions to the Sayadaws. Next, the Htidaw hoisting ceremony followed at the Mandat. The Secretary-1 and party and the congregation took the Nine Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kund-alabhivamsa. The Secretary-1 offered the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw to be fixed at Kyunhsinmin Pagoda to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kunda-labhivamsa.
Then, the Secretary-1 donated offertories to the Sayadaw. Similarly, wellwisher Dr Tha Yin Myat and family offered the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw to be hoisted atop Shwesigon Pagoda to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Avudha. Likewise, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, the commander, ministers and wellwishers donated provisions to members of the Sangha. The members of the Sangha recited Parittas. Then, Sayadaw Bhad- danta Avudha delivered a sermon, and the Secretary-1 and party and the congregation shared merits gained. Under the patronage of Sayadaw Bhaddanta Avudha, the Secretary-1 and party conveying the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw for Kyun-hsinmin Pagoda and wellwisher Dr Tha Yin Myat and family conveying the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw for Shwesigon Pagoda went round the respective pagodas clock-wise.
First, Teingyar Htidaw Hoisting team carried the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw for Kyunhsinmin Pagoda to the Mandat at north-east corner of the pagoda. The Secretary-1 and party and wellwisher Dr Tha Yin Myat and family conveyed to hoist the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw to hoist them atop Kyunhsinmin Pagoda by the decorated carriage. Then, Sayadaw Bhad-danta Avudha, the Secretary-1 and Dr Tha Yin Myat fixed the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmyatnadaw at Kyun-hsinmin Pagoda. Similarly, the Secretary-1 and party and the wellwisher family conveyed the Seinbu-daw and the Hngetmya-tnadaw atop Shwesigon Pagoda. Next, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Avudha, the Secretary-1 and Dr Tha Yin Myat fixed the Seinbudaw and the Hngetmya-tnadaw at Shwesigon Pagoda. Then, the Htidaw hoisting ceremony came to an end with the recitation of Buddha Sasanam iram Titthatu three times. Later, the Secretary-1 and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the successful completion of the
ceremonies.

YANGON, 5 Feb.- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt, member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence and party inspected No 1 Copper Mine of the Ministry of Mines in Salingyi Township yesterday.
Accompanied by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North- West Command Brig-Gen. Soe Naing, they observed the mined ore and crushing of ore for smelting. At Letpandaung Masoe-yein village-tract in the township, the Secretary-1 and party went round in a motorcade and viewed cultivation of cold season crops including gram, suntapya, groundnut, sesamum, sunflower, wheat and kitchen crops. Underground water is being used to irrigate crops. Salingyi Township has put 70,928 acres of land under cold season crops. Of them, 2,445 acres are in the village- tract. All the crops are thriving. On arrival at Natogyi town in Mandalay Division, the Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen. Ye Myint and officials. Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt and Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party attended the ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre at Natogyi Township Basic Education High School.
Also present on the occasion were Commander Brig-Gen. Ye Myint, local authorities, departmental
personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations, donors, the deputy director-general of No 2 Basic Education Department, officials, the township education officer, members of the School Board of Trustees, Headmistress Daw Pyone Pyone Win, teachers, students and members of dance and band troupes. Headmistress Daw Pyone Pyone Win and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Than Aung formally opened the centre. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt unveiled the signboard. The Secretary-1 and party then visited the sections of the centre, and watched the skill demonstrations of the students. The Secretary-1 presented teaching aids to the headmistress. U Kan Yin-Daw Hla Yi of Kyapin-aing village presented K 100,000 for the school, U Than Aung-Daw Khin Myo Aye K 150,000, and Htoohsan Co. emergence of the modern learning-teaching centres will surely contribute to producing brilliant persons serving the national interests in the future. The government is extending the modern learning-teaching centres with the aim of improving the national education to meet the international standard and to gradually narrow the education gap between urban and rural. There was an education divide between rural and urban in the past. At present the government is playing a key role in implementing the education promotion programmes; thus, the rural-urban education gap has been reduced to a significant degree. The majority of the students who passed the matriculation examination with highest marks in the whole nation are not from Yangon. There is no difference between the intellectual ability of the students of urban and rural. Application of better learning-teaching techniques and modern teaching aids will level their intellectual ability.Hence, the government is implementing the education promotion programmes with a view to applying correct learning-teaching systems and providing adequate amount of teaching aids. Thus, it is specially required for the public to take part in implementing the education promotion programmes in the entire nation. Understanding the leadership role of the government, the public is ardently cooperating in its education endeavours, and opening modern learning-teaching centres in the whole nation. The government and the people are like the parent and the children. The government has equal goodwill to all the people. Thus, the government is making arrangements to further develop the economy and improve social standard of its offspring in the whole nation. For example, the government has been building a spate of dams in the agro-based nation. Especially, water pumping stations have been installed in the dry regions where dams impossible to built. As the government is laying foundations for progress, the local people should strive to develop their regions.
As the school has been equipped with modern facilities, all should render assistance for emergence of outstanding persons. In Kyaukpadaung, the Secretary-1 and party inspected computer skill room, audio room, electric media, audio-visual room at the multimedia teaching centre of a basic education middle school in Myoshe Ward. They then visited No 2 BEHS in the town. Next, A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre of No 2 Basic Education High School was held at the school on 4 February. Also present were the Secretary-1, member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen. Ye Myint, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA, social associations, wellwishers, the director-general of No 2 Basic Education Department, Township Education Officer, members of School Board of Trustees, members of Parent-Teacher Association, Headmistress Daw Khin Nwe Aye, teachers, students, dance troupes.
Headmistress Daw Khin Nwe Aye and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Nyein Maung formally opened multimedia teaching centre of No 2 BEHS in Kyaukpadaung Township. The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. The Secretary-1 and party inspected art studio, domestic science room, printed media room, closed circuit television room, audio visual room, computer aided instruction room and computer skill room and learning of students. The Secretary-1 and party watched the entertainment of the students. Headmistress Daw Khin Nwe Aye and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Nyein Maung reported on efforts for opening of the centre. The Secretary-1 presented teaching aid video tapes for the school to Headmistress Daw Khin Nwe Aye. Wellwishers Minister U Aung Thaung presented K 1.8 million, Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Nyein Maung K 1.7 million and U Aye Lwin-Daw Khin Lay, Yoma Bank and Director-General of Border Trade Department U Nay Win K 100,000 each for No 2 BEHS. Minister U Aung Thaung presented the donations to the Secretary-1.
The Secretary-1 the government is implementing the education promotion programmes with the
objective to promote national education. Modern multimedia teaching centres have emerged in various Townships with the participation of the people, he said. He said multimedia teaching centres were opened nation wide for the future of student youths and arrangements are being made for achieving equal educational opportunities for the children. He praised the students for their excellent skills on education said the students of Kyaukpadaung No 2 BEHS are brighter than expected. It was the good benefit of opening of the multimedia teaching centres for the offspring of teachers, members of School Board of Trustees and the people, he added. He urged the students to try hard to become intellectuals and intelligentsia who serve the interest of the nation applying good results gained. He also urged the teachers and the people to speed up already-achieved momentum of success. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party had photos taken together with members of School Board of Trustees, the headmistress, teachers and students.The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Bagan plantation of arid zone model experimental farm of Hong Pang Co. in NyaungU Township. They were welcomed by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min and officials. At the briefing hall, Bagan plantation in-charge U Kyaw Naing reported on cultivation of coconut, grapes and durians and arrangements for cultivation of mango and orange. The Secretary-1 gave instructions. The Secretary-1 and party inspected grape vines. Then, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at the Lawka Nanda River Water Pumping Project of the Water Resources Utlization Department in ChaungU Township, Magway Division. At the briefing hall, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen. Nyunt Tin and Director of WRUD U Win Shwe reported on tasks being implemented to supply water from the project for 11,000 acres of cultivated land. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions.
After that, the Secretary-1 inspected floating water pump constructed on Ayeyawady River, installation of 15-inch pipes to pump water from the river, digging of the main drain and test pumping of river water, and left instructions. CEC Member of USDA Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint, who accompanied the Secretary-1, met with executives and ward/village organizers of division, district and township USDAs of Monywa, Shwebo and Sagaing districts in Sagaing Division at Monywa Town Hall on 3 February evening and discussed carrying out rural development tasks and organization works with added momentum and extension of opening courses including culture courses in coming summer vacation. The CEC member attended to the requirements for regional development.
Minister for Health Maj-Gen. Ket Sein on 2 February inspected extended construction of Mandalay 300- bed Hospital, renovation of operation theatre for kidney transplant in Mandalay people's Hospital, construction of surgical ward donated by Japan Cleft P Foundation of Japan and gave necessary instructions on 2 February. Minister Maj-Gen. Ket Sein then inspected arrangements for teaching of medicine at Yangon Institute of Medicine and Mandalay Institute of Medicine through Bagan Cybertech IDC & Teleport in Yangon. On 3 February, Minister Maj-Gen. Sein met physicians and specialists at Monywa People's Hospital and inspected renovation of dental and oral unit. This morning, the minister met personnel at Natogyi People's Hospital and gave instructions on health care services in accordance with five-year rural health development project.

More bridges being constructed in Kyaukphyu District, Rakhine State, to improve regional transportYANGON, 5 Feb.- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence met local authorities, departmental personnel and members of non-governmental organizations in Kyaukphyu, Rakhine State, on 3 February. Accompanied by Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Brig-Gen. Maung Oo and officials, Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than discussed regional development undertakings. Chairman of Kyaukphyu Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Yi reported on location and area of Kyaukphyu Township, cultivation and yield of monsoon paddy, cultivation of cold season crops including edible oil crops, fish and prawn breeding and production and education, health and social undertakings.
Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Thein discussed extension of aqua-
culture, livestock breeding and application of modern farming techniques; and Deputy Minister for
Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen. Khin Maung, land reclamation, introduction of different paddy
species and systematic cultivation of crops including beans and pulses, edible crops, vegetables and
pepper. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than said Rakhine State has favourable conditions for agriculture and aqua culture. Thus, local authorities and departmental personnel should strive for progress of their regions. They should organize farmers to raise per acre yield of crops, to engage in mixed-cropping and double-cropping and to apply scientific methods. Efforts should be made to extend fish and prawn farming in areas, where cultivation of crops is impossible, without harming the current sown acreage. All the households in the region should conduct farming on manageable scale to raise the per capita income. It is important to develop the economy and social standard of the rural areas where majority of the nation's population live.Local authorities, officials and social organizations should harmoniously strive to implement the five
rural development tasks. At Kyaukphyu District People's Hospital, Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than and party inspected emergency unit, laboratory, x-ray room, wards and operation theatre. In Yanbye Township, they inspected Minkyaung Creek Bridge Project. Officials of the project briefed them on progress in implementing the project, future tasks and construction of Ma-i-Kyaukphyu Road. They inspected bole piling and other tasks. Located in the township in Kyaukphyu District, the bridge will be 1,744 feet long. It will have a 24-foot motor road flanked by three-foot pedestrian lanes. The reinforced bridge will have the capacity to support 60-ton loads. The Maei-Kyaukphyu Road, which is 117 mile and six furlongs long, includes Taunggup-Maei, Maei-Londawpauk, Londawpauk-Peinhnedaung, Peinhnedaung-Sane (Khonmin Pagoda), and Sane (Khonmin Pagoda)-Kyaukphyu sections. During inspection of Deedokpauk Creek Bridge Project, Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than and party heard a report on the project presented by officials. Located in the township, the bridge will be 475 feet long and 24 feet wide. It will have 3-foot pedestrian lanes on either side.The reinforced concrete type facility will have the capacity to bear 60-ton loads. In An Township, they inspected Sanepauk Bridge. The bridge will be 789 feet long. It will have a 24-foot motor road flanked by 2.5-foot pedestrian lanes. The reinforced concrete bridge will have the capacity to support 60-ton loads. They then observed the Maei-Londawpauk section of the Maei-Kyaukphyu Road. The section is nine miles six furlongs long. At Kyaukkyipauk Creek Bridge Project, they attended to the needs of the officials. Located on Taungup-Maei-Kyaukphyu Road in An Township, the bridge will be 300-feet long and 24 feet wide. It will have 3-foot pedestrian lanes on either side. The reinforced concrete type facility will have the capacity to bear 60-ton loads. On completion of the Kyaukphyu-Maei road and all major bridges, vehicles from Kyaukphyu and Yanbye can go to Yangon through Taungup and Pyay. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than and party left Maei Creek Bridge and arrived in Taungup in the evening. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than and party met fisheries, prawn and crab entrepreneurs and discussed breeding of fish and prawn at the Township Fisheries Department.
Head of Fisheries Department U Soe Thu reported on production of deep sea water prawn and fish. The entrepreneurs reported on breeding of fish, prawn and crabs. Minister Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Thein and Commander Brig-Gen. Maung Oo and Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than discussed extended breeding of fresh water fish. CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen. Khin Maung met executives and members of USDA at Taungup USDA Office on 3 February. The CEC member explained the future tasks of the association and its objectives and five rural development tasks. Maung Oo and officials, attended a ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre of Basic Education High School in Taungup on 4 February. Headmistress Daw Nyunt Shwe and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Aung Kyaw Min formally opened the centre. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than formally unveiled the signboard of the centre.
He then inspected electronic media (language lab), computer application and e-mail, computer aided
instruction, electronic media (video system), visual presenter, electronic media (audio system) and printed media(reading corner)s and skill demonstration of the students. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than inspected art studio, domestic science room and handicraft room. The students presented gifts to Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than watched entertainment of the students. Headmistress Daw Nyunt Shwe and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Aung Kyaw Min reported on efforts for opening of multimedia teaching centre. Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than spoke on the occasion. YANGON, 5 Feb.- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe of the Ministry of Defence together with Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Myint and officials inspected construction of Saikkhaung- Namsang railroad and arrived at Project Office at Mongseik Village in Namsang Township on 1 February morning. Brig-Gen. Sein Lin of Kalaw Station and Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin reported on progress of work, future tasks and needs to Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe who gave instructions on timely completion of the project, using full capacity of machinery, worksite safety, and welfare of staff. After attending to the needs, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe presented gifts to Brig-Gen. Sein Lin for the Tatmadawmen who are constructing the railroad.
In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe arrived at Namsang-Mone-Langkho road extension project being carried out by Shwe Than Lwin Highway Co. Ltd and heard the reports by Deputy Managing Director U Hla Yee of the company on work done and work to be carried out and by Engineer U Tin Win on construction of bridges. After giving instructions to the officials, he inspected the construction tasks. He also visited Langkho People's Hospital and met with officials at the hall of Maternal and Child Welfare Association. He inspected the hospital and cordially greeted the patients. In the evening, he met with officers and other ranks at Langkho Station. Commander Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Myint and officials briefed on work being carried out and future tasks to Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe who gave instructions and attended to the needs.
On 2 February morning, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe and party arrived at Mongpan and inspected construction of Maha Tayzardhipadi Pagoda and he heard reports on construction tasks by officials and made donation to the pagoda. He then met with senior military officers from local station, departmental officials and members of social organizations at the hall of Mongpan Township Peace and Development Council office and gave instructions. After attending to the needs, he inspected Mongpan-Tahsan road and construction of Tahsan river-crossing bridge. In the evening, he made a speech in meeting with officers and other ranks and families at the hall of Mongpan Station. On 3 February morning, he attended the ceremony to present three sets of computer for Mongpan BEHS at the hall of township Peace and Development Council and made a speech. Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe, Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Myint and the in-charge of Asia World Road Extension Co. Ltd presented computer sets to Col Tha Aye of Mongpan Station and the headmaster. Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe inspected Langkho Bridge Project on Namtain Creek in Langkho.
The bridge is of reinforced concrete type and 290-ft long and 24-ft wide. He then arrived at Mongmao and met with departmental officials and members of social organizations at Township Peace and Development Council Office and gave instructions on regional development tasks and sufficiency of rice and attended to the needs. He then presented K 500,000 for a computer for Mongmao BEHS. Yesterday morning, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe offered soon to nine members of the Sangha at Myole monastery and received the Five Precepts form Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandiya of the monastery. He presented offertories to the Sayadaws and supplicated on religious matters. At 9 am, he met with members of Shan State Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, members of social organizations at the City Hall in Taunggyi and heard reports on regional development tasks and future tasks by the officials. He gave instructions and attended to the needs.
Maj-Gen. Soe Win inspects hydel power plantYANGON, 5 Feb.- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Soe Win of the Ministry of Defence, together with the Chairman of the Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of the Triangle Region Command Brig-Gen. Chit Than and officials, inspected the Namwok Hydroelectric Power Plant in Monghkon Region, Kengtung Township, on 2 February morning. Shan State Electrical engineer U Aye Kyaw and Executive Engineer of the Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise U Khin Maung Htay reported on the power plant, power supply and site chosen for the next plant. Then, Maj-Gen. Soe Win attended to the needs and inspected the power plant. Maj-Gen. Soe Win also attended the opening of the Pyinnya Alin modern library at the Kengtung District Information and Public Relations Department. Commander Brig-Gen. Chit Than formally opened the library. Maj-Gen. Soe Win and officials inspected round the library and fullfilled the necessaries.
(5) CEC member tours Ayeyawady Division
YANGON, 5 Feb.- Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, together with the Secretary of Ayeyawady Division USDA, toured Ayeyawady Division from 3 to 5 February. The CEC member met with executives of townships and district USDA at Pyapon, Maubin, Hinthada and Myaungmya District USDA offices.
He also met executives of seven townships, Pathein district and division USDAs at Ayeyawady Division USDA office in Pathein. At the meetings, the CEC member assessed progress in undertaking the rural development tasks and discussed future tasks. At 9.20 am on 3 February, the CEC member attended the handing over ceremony of new school building of Kyeechaung Basic Education Primary School No 3 in Pabesu village-tract, Kyaiklat Township. The building was constructed at a cost of K 1,523,156 donated by U Ngwe Win of Yangon and executives of Township and Village USDAs.
Minister U Pan Aung inspects railroads and bridges
YANGON, 5 Feb.- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by officials, inspected the railroads between the Ngaphyugalay and Nattalin Railways Stations by EMC on 3 February. On 4 February, he inspected railroads and bridges by EMC from Kyangin Station to Myokwin bridge and gave necessary instructions.
Minister previews booths of Union Day ExhibitionYANGON, 5 Feb.- Minister for Information Maj-Gen. Kyi Aung arrived at Tatmadaw Convention
Centre, where the 55th Anniversary Union Day Exhibition will be held, at 2 p.m. today and was
welcomed by Chairman of the subcommittee for organizing the Union Day Exhibition Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen. Aung Thein, subcommittee members and officials.Then, the minister previewed the central booth on propagation of the Union spirit and booths on the
origin of human beings in Myanmar, ancient Pyu civilization, the first, second and third Myanmar
empires, cultures of national races, the ministries and the News and Periodicals Enterprise. The deputy minister and officials conducted the minister round the booths. The Union Day Exhibition will be on display from 7 to 13 February from 9 am to 5 p.m. and admission is free. YANGON, 5 Feb.- Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint, accompanied by officials, arrived at gold mines project of Kyaukpahto special mines No 2 in Sagaing Division on 1 February evening, where he met with entrepreneurs of joint-venture gold mines. Next, he inspected the Open Pit of Mining Division, the Ore Zone II Mine Development and fish ponds. Officials reported to him matters on implementation of tasks. The minister gave necessary instructions.
On 2 February, the minister inspected the gold refinery of Kyaukpahto special mines No 2 and gave
instructions on boosting of gold production. Then, he inspected the process of refining gold. In the
evening, the minister inspected the clinic of the factory and gave necessary instructions. On 3 February evening, the minister went to Copper (Monywa) project in Sagaing Division, where officials reported to the minister on difficulties encountered. The minister gave instructions on site-safety and measures to protect the environment. On 4 February morning, the minister inspected the multimedia classroom in Basic Education High School of No 1 at Copper Mines, Miners' Hospital, and cultivation of perennial crops and vegetables, and gave instructions.
(6) Seminar on Motor Insurance Claims held
YANGON, 5 Feb.- The Seminar on Motor Insurance Claims, jointly sponsored by Myanma Insurance and the Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance Co. Ltd of Japan, was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this afternoon, with an address by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen. Than Tun, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Vice-Governor U Than Lwin, Managing Director U Thein Lwin and officials of Myanma Insurance, officials, the managing director of Myanmar International Insurance Corporation, General Manager Mr Koji Otsuka of the Yasuda Fire and Marine Insurance Co. Ltd, technicians Mr Yutaka Tada and Mr David Wang, Country Representative in Yangon Branch Mr Masashi Sawada and guests. Speaking on the occasion, Minister U Khin Maung Thein said Myanma Insurance has reinsurance agreement with the Yasuda for the underwriting of Motor Insurance in foreign currency and claims were paid by the Yasuda, in consultation with Myanma Insurance.
Therefore, it is befitting for Myanma Insurance and Yasuda, the partners in business, to hold such a kind of Seminar jointly. Motor Insurance is a growing business in Myanmar but the claims are relatively on the downside. However, it will be beneficial to the claim managers and the insuring public, to learn about the procedures and considerations relating to Motor Claims. Victorious athletes honoured
YANGON, 5 Feb.- Minister for Energy Brig-Gen. Lun Thi honoured the football team of the Ministry of Energy, which stood second in the soccer tournament (Open) of the first National Olympic Council Chairman's Trophy, at Yadana Hall of the ministry this evening. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers for Energy U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen. Thein Aung, departmental heads, invited guests, the manager of the football team, coaches and players. First, the minister gave an honorary speech and presented prizes to coaches and footballers. Then, selected Myanma footballer U Aye Min Tun, on behalf of the team, spoke words of thanks.
Stone inscription bearing Myanma Education Goals unveiledYANGON, 5 Feb.- A ceremony to unveil the stone inscription bearing Myanma education goals was held in the compound of Basic Education High School No 1, Dagon Township, at 1 p.m. today. It was attended by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Brig-Gen. Myint Swe, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Soe Win Maung, directors- general of the Ministry of Education, chairmen and members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, township education officers, headmasters, headmistresses, teachers, members of the school board of trustees and the parent-teacher association, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, the school band troupe and students.
The gold medalist students of the school formally unveiled the stone inscription bearing the sentences " To create an education system that can generate a learning society capable of facing the challenges of the knowledge age." Minister for Education U Than Aung elaborated on Myanma education goals at Dagon Thiri Hall of the school. Sixth standard student Ma Phyu The Han presented 12 Myanma education goals and Headmaster U Kyaw Kyaw spoke words of thanks. Similar ceremonies will be held at universities, colleges and basic education schools all over the nation.
(7) Regional Conference on Social Development and Poverty Reduction held
YANGON, 5 Feb.- The opening of Regional Conference on Social Development and Poverty Reduction through Vocational Training and Technical Education in the ASEAN Region, jointly organized by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies and the Ramos Peace and Development Foundation (RPDEV), with the sponsorship of Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany, was held at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road here at 4 p.m. today.
It was attended by Minister for Foreign Affairs Chairman of MISIS U Win Aung, Minister at the
Chairman's Office of State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen. Abel, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyun, deputy ministers, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and CEC members, Chairman of RPDEV former President of the Republic of the Philippines Mr Fidel V Ramos, Chairman of the CSU Group in German Bundestag Mr Michael Glos, Deputy Director-General of HSF Dr Rainer Gepperth and officials, Heads of ASEAN member nations, the People's Republic of China, Japan, Korea and the Federal Republic of Germany, representatives, departmental heads, journalists and guests. Minister inspects Pharmaceutical FactoryYANGON, 5 Feb.- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung inspected the chosen site for construction of Garment Factory of Myanma Textile Industries near Nyaunggon Village in Budalin Township in Sagaing Division on 3 February morning. He heard the reports by Managing Director U Oo Thein Maung of Myanma Textile Industries on geological condition of the site and gave instructions. The tentatively chosen site is 15 miles from Monywa in Sagaing Division near Nyaunggon Village in Htandaw Village- tract on the east bank of Chindwin River.
The minister, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win and party, visited spirulina
production division of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries and inspected Twintaung environs and
growing of spirulina in the lake. He also inspected production of spirulina, drying and cleaning of
spirulina using newly installed Allgaier machine. This morning, the minister attended the ceremony to
open Marketing Management Course No 1/2002 at the hall of the ministry and made a speech. Also
present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Thein Tun, directors-general, deputy directors- general, managing directors, directors and general managers from the ministry, course instructors and trainees. YANGON, 5 Feb.- Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 34 of the University for Development of National Races, led by Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si and supervisor teachers, left the training school of the Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries in Sinde for Magway on 1 February morning.
At 11 am, the trainees arrived at Taungdwingyi where they were welcomed and entertained to a
luncheon at Myoma BEPS by Chairman of Magway District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Zaw Thein, the Township Peace and Development Council members and departmental officials. Then the trainees visited Beikthano Old City in the township in the afternoon where they were briefed on history of the city and excavation tasks by an official. They then looked around the old city in three groups. In the evening, the Magway Division Peace and Development Council Office hosted a dinner to them at City Hall in Magway. Chairman of the council Col Zaw Min extended greetings and explained facts about the division to the trainees. Chairman Col Zaw Min and Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si exchanged commemorative pennants, and a trainee expressed thanks. Afterwards, students who had taken part in the Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions gave performances to the trainees, who then sang songs.The group spent the night in at Magway. Ancient Cultural Region in NyaungU Township in NyaungU District, Mandalay Division. Chairman of NyaungU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo extended greetings to them at the Shwezigon Pagoda. A trainee spoke words of thanks followed by exchanging of commemorative pennants. Deputy Director-General U Aung Kyaing of Archaeology Department (Upper Myanmar) briefed them on history of pagodas in NyaungU. Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si, on behalf of the trainees, presented cash to the pagoda funds. After paying obeisance to the pagodas they left for Mt Popa in Kyaukpadaung Township in Myingyan District and arrived there at 5 p.m. and were greeted by Brig-Gen. Than Tun of Kyaukpadaung Station.After that, the chairman of Kyaukpadaung Township Peace and Development Council explained facts of the township to the trainees. Then the group scaled Mt Popa and paid homage to the pagodas. They spent the night there. On 3 February morning, they visited Kyet-mauktaung Dam in the township where Township Officer U Khin Maung Tin of the Irrigation Department briefed them on the dam. They were hosted a luncheon there. They proceeded to Kinda Dam and Hydro-electric Power Station in Myittha Township. Assistant Director U Win Aung of Township Irrigation Department extended greetings. Then, the trainees were briefed on the station. Assistant Director U Win Aung presented gifts to Leader Pro- Rector Daw Khin Si Si. Conducted by the officials, the group looked around the reservoir and the station. The trainees arrived back at the university in Ywa-thitgyi in Sagaing Division in the afternoon where they were welcomed by Rector Col Zaw Min Thein and teachers and trainees.
(8) Sports equipment donated to IARD
YANGON, 5 Feb.- A ceremony to hand over Taekwondo uniforms and sports equipment donated by Korean Ministry of National Defence to the International Affairs and Research Department, Ministry of Defence through the Military Attaché' of Korean Embassy to the Union of Myanmar was held at No 2 Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 2 p.m. today. Military Attaché' of the Embassy of ROK Col Yoon Han Hong presented gifts 18 suits of Taekwondo uniform, six pieces of head gear, 20 pieces of body protector and eight pieces of groin guard to Chief of the International Affairs and Research Department Col Khin Aung, who presented a certificate of honour. The uniforms and sports equipment were handed over to Vice-Chairman of Tatmadaw Sports and Physical Education Management Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo.
Deputy Minister attends Second World Leprosy Elimination Meeting
YANGON, 5 Feb.- The Second World Leprosy Elimination Meeting was held in Brasilia of Brazil on 29 January. A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Health Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint attended the meeting. WHO Director-General Dr Gro Harlem Brudtland extended greetings. Resident Representative Dr Jacobo Finkelman of Brazil, Director of WHO Office Dr Maria Neira, Nippon Foundation Chairman Mr Yohei Sasakawa, OSD at the Ministry of Health of India Mr Prasada Rao and the Adviser to the Health Policy of Brazil also extended greetings. Certificates were presented to those who contributed to leprosy elimination tasks in the region.
At the meeting, Deputy Minister Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint and the Adviser to the Health Policy of Brazil presided over the meeting. Participants took part in the discussions. Deputy Minister Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint discussed tasks being carried out with the aim of eradicating the leprosy disease in 2003. In the afternoon session, those present took part in the discussions. Then, the deputy minister attended the meeting on functions of organizations which participated in the world leprosy elimination group. Director Dr Khin Than Oo (Health Education) and Deputy Director Daw Kyaw Nyunt Sein (Leprosy) of the Myanmar delegation discussed techniques of leprosy elimination. In the afternoon, those present discussed production of leprosy medicines. In the third day session, they discussed experiences on rehabilitation and eradication tasks of Brazil. Yesterday evening, the Deputy Minister and party arrived back here by air. They were welcomed back at the airport by Deputy Minister for Health Prof. Dr Mya Oo and officials.
AWB meets entrepreneurs in Myaungmya and PatheinYANGON, 5 Feb.- The Asia Wealth Bank Ltd met with towns elders and entrepreneurs of Myaungmya Township at the Naungyoe Hall in Myaungmya on 3 February afternoon and towns elders and entrepreneurs of Pathein Township at the Posutaung Hall in Pathein on 4 February morning. On both occasions, AWB Vice-Chairman U Aik Tun explained facts about on-line banking services and bank loan services. One, who opens accounts at a branch of AWB, can benefit banking services within minutes at any branch by using on-line banking services. Pathein Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Myint Aung accepted a fire engine worth K 2.7 million and Pathein Township Red Cross Society Deputy Commanding Officer U Thaung Tin accepted K 50,000 for the society donated by AWB Ltd.
(9) Drug trafficker sentenced life
YANGON, 5 Feb.- A combined team comprising members of the Border Area Discipline Enforcement Unit (1), acting on information, seized 1,650,000 stimulant tablets from Thai national Phihtat Tinama at Wonpon Jetty in Mongphon, Tachilek Township, on 10 June 2001. The Tachilek Police Station took action against Phihtat Tinama, 42, son of Naing Lone Shwe of Changmai Thailand, under Section 15/19(A)/20 (B) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. He was sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 19 (A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the Tachelik District Court on 9 January 2002. One gold chain, one gold pendant and one gold hand-chain were confiscated.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the Matriculation or equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the requirements or not.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONForeign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country of their residence, or at the examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers, namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001. The written entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate who passes the written examination must sit for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is liberal and flexible enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students. The students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.
VISA & OTHER EXPENSES
Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding and messing for foreign students will be provided free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
