(1) Work coordinated to open Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University

YANGON, 1 Feb. - A coordination meeting on opening  Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University was held at the  meeting hall of the office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army)  of the Ministry of Defence this evening, attended by  Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin  Nyunt.

Also present were Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen.  Myint Swe, ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy  ministers, senior military officers, members of the leading committee for opening Myanmar Aerospace  Engineering University, members of subcommittees, officials of the State Peace and Development  Council Office, heads of department and officials. The Secretary-1 said that in line with the guidance of  Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, universities and colleges concerning various fields of study  have been built in the higher education sector so that human resources capable of contributing to the  development of the State can be nurtured. What's more, plans are afoot to open Myanmar Maritime  University and Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University, and progress has been made to an extent.

As to the opening of the Aerospace Engineering University, it is necessary to promulgate the university  law, draw the curricula and the set-up of the university, appoint teachers, collect teaching materials and  aids and construct buildings. He encouraged members of the leading committee and the subcommittees  to contribute to the meeting on opening the university as scheduled which will help generate the  educational opportunities for the new generation youth and help build a modern, developed nation.  Chairman of the Leading Committee Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung reported on  measures taken for the opening of the university. Then, the chairmen and officials of the subcommittees  reported on matters related to courses to be conducted, curricula, appointment of teachers, availability  of teaching materials  and aids. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with  concluding remarks by  the Secretary-1.

Secretary-1 inspects demonstration of National Orchestra

YANGON, 1 Feb. - The demonstration of the National Orchestra, formed with musicians of Myanma  Radio and Television of the Ministry of Information and external professionals was held at the National  Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street in Dagon Township at 5.45 p.m. today attended by Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen. Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were members of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant -  General Maj.-Gen.  Thein Sein and Maj- Gen. Kyaw Win of the ministry of Defence,  Brig -Gen. Myint Swe,  ministers , deputy ministers Gitalulin U Ko Ko and musicians.

First Director -General U Khin Maung Htay of MRTV and  Gitalulin U Ko Ko reported on musical
instruments of the  National Orchestra, forming and practising, instruments to be  provided and
organizational set up of the broadcasting  division with the use of audio-visual aids. Minister Kyi Aung  gave a supplementary report. Then, staff Officer of MRTV  Daw San San Yin introduced musicians of the National  Orchestra to the Secretary-1.

Next, the demonstration was presented by the musicians  individually and in the groups. After the
demonstration programme the Secretary-1 cordially met the  musicians and left the National Theatre at 7 p.m. The National Orchestra is formed with 96 musicians  playing 17 kinds of musical instrument.


(2) Secretary-1 attends second donation ceremony for water supply in rural areas

YANGON, 1 Feb. - The second donation ceremony for water supply in rural area being implemented by  the Development Affairs Department of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races  and Development Affairs was held of at the head office of the department in Thanlyetsun, Botataung  Township this morning, at tended by Chairman of Working Committee for Development of Border  Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen. Khin  Nyunt.

Also present were ministers, deputy minister, Ministry of Defense, Director- General and official of
departments under the ministry, wellwishers and guest.

First, Minister for PBANRDA Col Thein Nyunt explained measures for water supply in rural areas. The  ministry of PBANRDA has been carrying out tasks to construct roads and bridges and water supply for  all round development of rural area laying down yearly plans. The ministry spent a total of K  4,567.2million on tasks from 1998-99 to 2001-2002 fiscal years. A total of 23,225 villages of the  nation need clean water supply. The tasks so far have covered 3,323 village. The tasks to provided  cleans water system to the remaining village will be carried out in cooperation with wellwishers.

The Secretary-1 Lt- Gen. Khin Nyunt accepted cash donations by  wellwishers. Then Ministers and  deputy ministers accepted cash donations by  wellwishers. The second donation made by 88  wellwishers amounted k 98.8 million.

On behalf of wellwishers, Head of Office of Shwe Than Lain Co. U San Myint explained the purpose of  the donation.

Then, the Secretary-1 said that the second donation - K 98.8  million for the rural water supply project by wellwishers was  a noble and pleasant deed.

The government had constructed dams and implemented  river water pumping projects and others to ensure obtaining  water for cultivation and drinking in the dry zone and the local  people in the project areas fully enjoyed the fruit of the  projects.

In addition, rural people were fully enjoying the fruits of rural water supply project as the government  also had implemented it in rural areas where there are no dams and river water pumping projects. In  conclusion, he wished that the wellwishers who made contribution towards the project which gave the  rural people mental and physical wellbeing may enjoy full prosperity. After the ceremony, the  Secretary-1 viewed documentary photos of rural water supply project being implemented with the first  donation.


(3) Minister receives Chinese delegation

YANGON, 1 Feb. - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen. Nyunt Tin received an agricultural  delegation led by Mr Li Weiguo of the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China at his  office this morning. They discussed matters related to promotion of bilateral technical cooperation in the  agriculture sector. The delegation also met with the officials of departments concerned and discussed  matters relating to establishing of an agricultural research centre and agro-based industries, production  of hybrid paddy and quality strain crops, manufacturing of compound fertilizer and farm equipment and  extended rubber cultivation.

Minister receives Ambassador of Norway

YANGON, 1 Feb.- Minister for Labour and for Culture U Tin Winn received Bangkok-based
Ambassador  of Norway Ms Range Birte Lund at his office at 2 p.m. today. They cordially discussed preservation of  traditional culture and labour affairs. Also present at the call were Director-General U Soe Nyunt of  Labour Department and officials of the Ministry of Culture.

(4) Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe inspects development tasks in Kayah, Shan States

YANGON, 1 Feb.- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe of the  Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council  Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Myint, Brig-Gen. Thura Sein Thaung of  Phekhon Station and Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen. Nyunt  Hlaing, arrived at Lawpita Hydel Power Plant in Loikaw on 29 January morning. At the briefing hall,  Plant Manager U Tin Maung Win reported on construction and operation of the plant, power supply  and arrangements for extended production of electricity. Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe gave necessary  instructions. He fulfilled the requirements and inspected No 1 and No 2 power plants. Then, he met with  officers, Tatmadawmen and their families from regiments and units of Loikaw Station at the station hall.

He gave instructions on participation of Tatmadawmen in regional development tasks hand in hand with  departments concerned and local people. He inspected coffee, chilli, brinjal plantations and pepper  saplings grown by Loikaw Station. In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe and party proceeded to  Loikaw Railways Station. At the briefing hall, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung  Lwin reported on the building of Loikaw-Aungban railroad and maintenance of locomotives and rail  lines. Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe gave instructions.

At Loikaw City Hall, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe met with local authorities, departmental personnel, Union  Solidarity and Development Association members, personnel of social organizations and local people.  First, Commander Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Myint and Kayah State Peace and Development Council  Chairman Brig-Gen. Nyunt Hlaing reported matters on regional development.

Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe attended to their needs and urged departmental personnel to participate in
regional development tasks hand in hand with local people. He also gave instructions on extended
reclamation of vacant and virgin lands, cultivation of various crops which are suitable for the local
climate, local sufficiency of rice and extension of livestock breeding tasks. Afterwards, Maj-Gen. Aung  Htwe and party went to Moebye Reservoir. At the briefing hall, officials concerned reported on water  storage of the reservoir, water supply to surrounding villages, agricultural tasks being undertaken in local  area and future tasks. Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe left necessary instructions and attended to their needs.  Then, he inspected the reservoir.

Next, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe cordially met with officers, Tatmadawmen and family members from
Phekhon Station at Phekhon Station Hall. On 30 January, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe, together with
Commander Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Myint and officials, proceeded to Saikkhaung-Namhsan railroad  construction project. At the briefing hall, Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin and officials reported  matters on construction work, stockpile of construction materials, use of heavy machinery and future  tasks. Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe called for use of heavy machinery at full capacity and measures for work  site safety, and attended to their needs.

In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe viewed cultivation of cabbage among sugarcane plantations and  orange plantations, the breeding of 50 pigs and 27,500 poultry by a private entrepreneur in Namhkhoke  Village, Hopong Township. On 29 January morning, USDA Central Executive Committee member  Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen. Thein Aung, who accompanied Maj-Gen. Aung Htwe, met with  USDA members of Loikaw Township. Central Organizing Committee member of Myanmar War  Veterans Organization Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin also met with  Loikaw Township War Veterans Organization members in Loikaw.

Contract signed by MPT and DHL Worldwide Express BV

YANGON, 31 Jan. - With the permission of Myanmar Investment Commission, Myanma Posts and  Telecommunications of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs, and DHL Worldwide  Express BV, as Myanmar DHL Ltd, have successfully been cooperating in the international express  post field since 1 January 1997. As the first five-year tenure witnessed success, Managing Director of  MPT U Maung Maung Tin and Area Director of DHL Worldwide Express BV Mr Malcolm Jefferey  Rees signed a contract to extend another five-year tenure at the meeting hall of Myanmar DHL on Kaba  Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon. Present on the occasion were officials of Directorate of  Telecommunications and MPT under the ministry. The Myanmar DHL Ltd is adopting the door to door  system in sending parcels to 282 nations.


(5)  Minister inspects road works

YANGON, 1 Feb. - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen. Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of Public  Works, inspected construction of MaI-Padekyaw-An road in Rakhine State on 28 January morning. At  Talaingtaung Camp, the minister and party heard reports on progress of work by Senior Engineer U Tun  Tha and Assistant Engineer U Ohn Lwin. The minister gave instructions on construction of wooden  bridges along the road and attended to requirements. Then, the minister inspected construction of  wooden bridges on his way to An. In An, the minister inspected construction of a bypass. At Ohbon  Camp, the minister and party heard a report on the finding of the axis of the road and progress of work  by Senior Engineer U Tun Tha. The minister fulfilled the needs in construction of the bypass. On 29  January morning, the minister and party inspected construction of MaI-Kyaukpyu road. The minister  gave instructions on construction work.

Prisons Department holds coord meeting

YANGON, 1 Feb. - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing addressed the third four-monthly work  coordination meeting for 2001 of the Prisons Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, at the department  in Insein Township this morning. Also present were Director-General U Kyaw Tun of the Prisons  Department, director-general of Myanmar Police Force and directors-general of the departments under  the ministry and officials. Addressing the meeting, the minister pointed out the aims of the ministry and  urged the staff to serve the interest of the people and discharge duties with patriotism.

Minister inspects shipyard

YANGON, 1 Feb. - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen. Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister  Brig-Gen. Kyaw Myint and officials, inspected Dawbon Shipyard of the Department of Marine  Administration this morning. Director-General U Soe Win and manager U Myint Aung reported on  formation, repairing capacity and extension of the shipyard and financial matters. After the  supplementary report by the deputy minister, the minister fulfilled the requirements. Then, the minister  inspected repair of ships in the shipyard and hall of the deck-sailor training course. The director-general  explained the purpose of the course and training systems. Afterwards, the minister and party inspected  the site chosen for the construction of a new dock in the shipyard.


(6) Regional development works inspected in Chin State

YANGON, 1 Feb.-Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of the  Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council  Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen. Soe Naing, Chairman of Chin State Peace and  Development Council Col Than Win and officials, inspected the tea garden and model tea plantation of  the Research Farm of Vegetable and Fruit Division of Myanma Agriculture Service in Lonpi Village,  Falam Township, on 21 January morning. Manager of the farm U Za Thi Am and Manager of Chin  State Agriculture Service U Khin Maung Latt reported on establishment of tea nurseries and the  growing of tea. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and the commander gave instructions and attended to the needs.

They proceeded to Laingba hydro-electric power plant in Laingba Village in the same township where  the manager of the plant U Da Cha reported on work being done. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint gave instructions  on operation of the plant at full capacity and maintenance work and fulfilled the requirements.  Afterwards, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint headed for Ramkalaung Farm in Falam Township and inspected tea  nurseries and the growing of tea and others. In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party met with  Chin State/District/Township level departmental officials at the Town Hall in Haka.

Chairman Col Than Win and officials reported on work being carried out for regional development to  Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, who gave necessary instructions on systematic implementation of five rural
development tasks and extension of cultivation of tea and mulberry. On 22 January morning, Maj-Gen.   Ye Myint, together with Commander Brig-Gen. Soe Naing, inspected the tea nursery of Haka Township   Forest Department on Haka-Thantlang motor road. After that, they arrived at Thantlang Township  Peace and Development Council office and met with departmental officials and fulfilled their  requirements. Then, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party inspected the 16-bed hospital of the township and  attended the opening of the delivery room and the office of Township Maternal and Child Welfare  Association. They formally opened them and inspected the delivery room.

Maj-Gen. Ye Myint then attended to the needs. In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint inspected
construction of the 150-bed people's hospital and staff quarter and attended to the needs. Next,  Maj-Gen. Ye Myint proceeded to Myoma Sarthin-taik in Haka and presented offertories to Sayadaws  and members of the Sangha and stationery to 85 Parahita students at the Kyaungtaik.

AWB meets entrepreneurs in Pyay

YANGON, 1 Feb. - The Asia Wealth Bank Ltd introduced on-line banking services at the Khittaya Radana  City Hall in Pyay this morning. Vice-Chairman of AWB U Aik Tun explained facts about on-line  banking services with the aid of video and answered the queries raised by entrepreneurs. Then, those  present viewed functions of the services. For the convenience of the customers who contact AWB and  for development of banking system, AWB, in cooperation with Bagan Cyber- tech, has launched  on-line services in all its branches. The AWB is the one which launched the on-line banking service first  in Myanmar.


(7)  Commander oversees agriculture and development tasks

YANGON, 1 Feb. - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and  Development Council Commander of Yangon Command  Brig-Gen. Myint Swe inspected agriculture and regional  development tasks in Dalla, Kawhmu and Kungyangon  townships in Yangon South District today. Accompanied by  Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development  Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and officials, the commander  visited Kawhmu Township Peace and Development Council  Office. Chairman of Kawhmu Township Peace and  Development Council U Myint Oo briefed the commander  and party on agriculture and regional development work. The commander and party attended to the  needs.

At Tawkyaunggon village in Kungyangon Township, the commander inspected summer paddy fields. He  heard a report on cultivation of summer paddy by Division Manager U San Maung of Myanma
Agriculture Service. The commander then inspected Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye) Project near Ingapu  village in Kungyangon township. When completed, the bridge will serve as a link between Yangon and  Ayeya-wady Divisions. Superintending Engineer of special bridge construction division 7 U Khin Maung  Win reported on progress in building the facility. Commander Brig-Gen. Myint Swe stressed the need  to ensure work site safety and to strive to complete the project in time.

The 4,088-foot-long facility will have a 28-foot-wide motor road with two 6-foot-wide pedestrian  lanes on each side. The clearance is 36 feet high and 390 feet wide. The bridge will be supported by  reinforced piles. The upper structure will be built of steel frames. It will have a capacity to withstand  60-ton loads.

 The bridge will ensure easy link between Yangon Division and Ayeyawady Division via Dalla, Kanbe,  Kawhmu and Kungyangon in the former and Dedaye, Kyaiklat and Pyapon in the latter. At  Kungyangon Township Peace and Development Council Office, the commander met departmental  personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire  Brigade and social organizations.

He urged them to strive for regional development and to provide assistance to farmers who are
cultivating summer paddy and beans and pulses and edible crops. They should make collective efforts  for progress of health, education, transport and economic sectors and to raise the income of farmers, he  said. Chairman of Yangon (South) District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Hlaing and  officials reported on regional development undertakings, agriculture and the condition of wetlands in the  area. During the inspection of the 25-bed hospital in Kungyangon Township, he visited the patients.

At the Kungyangon Middle School, he inspected the multimedia teaching centre. He visited the
Kungyangon Township USDA and met with the executives. In Dalla, he met departmental personnel  and discussed regional development undertakings.


(8) Entries invited to Armed Forces Day commemorative colour photo competitions

YANGON, 1 Feb.-The Working Committee for Organizing Literary and Photo Competitions has already  invited entries for a colour photo competition in commemoration of the 57th Anniversary of the Armed  Forces Day. Two titles " Construction Work all over Myanmar " and " Love inspiring cultural arts " have  been designated for the competition. A competitor may send up to four photos for each title. The print  entry is to be 10" x 12" or a bigger size. Those who have not won prizes will get a better chance for  winning prizes as those who have won the first, second or third prizes in the previous competitions will  be categorised into another group.

If an entry wins a prize, its negative is to be submitted. Data about photos and captions are to provided  on a separate plain sheet. If there is a model, his or her permission is required. An entry is not to be  published in any previous publications and it must not be prize winning work at home and abroad.  Handsome prizes will be presented to those who stand first, second and third and to consolation prize  winners for each competition. The first, second and third prizes in colour photo competition will be  presented to prize winners in Yangon on the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, 27 March 2002,  and consolation prizes at the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day ceremonies of the respective  Commands. Prospect of Myanma education stone plaque unveiled in Sangyoung BEHS No 2

YANGON, 1 Feb.- ceremony to unveil the stone plaque to create an education system that can generate a  learning society capable of facing the challenges of the knowledge age was held at Basic Education High  School No 2 in Sangyoung Township this morning, attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung.  Also present were Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, directors-general and chairmen of  departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, the township education officer and the  headmistress, members of School Board of Trustees and Parent-Teacher Association, township  authorities, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare  Association, Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, guests, the band and students. First, those  present saluted the State Flag and the band played the National Anthem. Schoolgirls unveiled the stone  plaque and other schoolgirls sang the song " Myanma School ". At Sabei Hall of the school, Minister for  Education U Than Aung explained the prospect of Myanma education. Then, Headmistress Daw Khin  May Gyi spoke words of thanks and the ceremony ended. Similar ceremonies will be held at  universities,
colleges and basic education schools all over the country.


(9)  Myanmar and Korea play 2-2 draw

YANGON, 1 Feb. - A friendly warming-up soccer match between under-17 Myanma Youth Selected  football team and Songji University football team of the ROK took place at the sports ground of  Thuwunna Youth Training Centre at 4 p.m. today. Among the spectators were Myanmar Olympic  Committee Chairman Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint and officials and guests. Players of  both sides greeted each other and team leaders exchanged commemorative pennants. In the match,  Myanmar Youth team and Songji University team played 2-2 draw.

Myanmar beat Laos 1-0 in semi-final

YANGON, 1 Feb.- Two semi-final matches of the ASEAN U-20 Youth Soccer Tournament were held in  Bangkok, Thailand, this afternoon. In the first semi-final, host Thai youth team beat Vietnamese youth  team 3-2 and entered the final. In the second semi-final, Myanmar youth team beat Laotian youth team  1-0 and sailed to the final. At 37th minute, the Myanmar team got a chance to win with a penalty. Yan  Paing kicked the ball into the net of the Laos team. On 3 February, the Myanmar team will meet against  host Thai team at 4 p.m. local time.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the  Matriculation or  equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or  B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for  Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not  older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the  requirements or not.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Foreign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country  of their residence, or at the  examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers,  namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The  closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001.  The written  entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate  who passes the  written examination must sit  for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their  residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is  liberal and flexible  enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students.  The  students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any  recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.

VISA & OTHER EXPENSES

Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care  of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding  and messing for foreign students will be provided  free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
