(1) Minister inspects progress in building Kawliya, Baingda, Yenwe Dams in Bago DivisionYANGON., 24 Jan.- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen. Nyunt Tin, accompanied by the director-general and directors of Irrigation Department, arrived at the construction site of Kawliya Dam Project 20 miles from Yangon-Mandalay Highway in DaikU Township, Bago Division (East), on 22 January.
The minister inspected construction tasks. Then, the minister, Director-General U Kyaw San Win and officials discussed the design of the dam, annual inflow of water into the dam from Kawliya Creek and Kyar Creek, storage capacity of the dam and soil condition and underground rock layers. The minister laid down work plans to complete the main dam before the rainy season. Next, the minister inspected the foundation laying of the main dam and construction of the outlet conduit. In the afternoon, the minister and party proceeded to Baingda Diversion Weir being built in DaikU Township.
Officials reported to the minister on construction of Baingda Diversion Weir and future tasks. The
minister inspected work to lay the foundation and construction of the sluice gate and the diaphragm wall and pile driving tasks. After that, the minister and party arrived at Baingda Dam construction project near Bago Yoma 32 miles from Yangon-Mandalay Highway and inspected the dam construction tasks and the reservoir under construction. Director U Khin Maung Yu and officials reported on tasks being carried out and work to be done. The minister gave instructions on timely completion of the project and fulfilled heavy machinery requirements.Then, the minister inspected building of the four reinforced concrete conduits, construction of the 1,400 feet long and 122 feet high main earth dam with the use of heavy machinery, progress of embankment construction and building of the 100 feet wide and 535 feet long spillway, and laid down tasks to be done. In the afternoon, the minister and party went to Yenwe Multi-purpose Dam Project being undertaken near Myochaung Village, Kyaukdaga Township. The minister inspected construction of the portal of the tunnel which is being built with reinforced concrete. The minister together with workers and engineers of Irrigation Department and technicians viewed progress in construction of the tunnel.
Then, officials reported to the minister on future tasks, construction of the wall and floor and schedule time for completion of the work. Next, the minister had photo taken together with workers of the department in front of the tunnel. Afterwards, the minister inspected progress in construction of the spillway and concrete laying. He then inspected building of the exit of the tunnel. Later, the minister inspected tasks being carried out by ID in cooperation with Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise to build the main embankment and to install a power station. After inspecting the progress of work, he gave necessary instructions.
MPF holds second and third four-monthly coord meetingYANGON., 24 Jan.- The second and third four-monthly work coordination meeting for 2002 of
Myanmar Police Force was held at the meeting hall of the Headquarters of MPF this afternoon, attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing.It was attended by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen. Soe Win, directors-general and deputy directors-general of the departments under the ministry, deputy directors-general and MPF Deputy Director-General Police Brig-Gen. of MPF, senior police officers, directors, principals of training schools and commanding officers of police battalions. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing made a speech.
He said MPF should strive to organize the people in ensuring the prevalence of community peace and tranquillity and law and order, to modernise the qualified MPF equipped with patriotism, to safeguard public interests and to win the public trust, to prevent violence acts in the State, to join hands with other organizations and to actively participate in performing the development tasks and construction work of the State.
USDA Secretary-General receives Vietnamese delegation
YANGON., 24 Jan.- Union Solidarity and Development Association Secretary-General U Than Aung received visiting goodwill delegation led by Mr Hoang Thinh of Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the Headquarters of USDA in Bahan Township this evening. Also present at the call were USDA CEC members U Thein Sein, Col Thaik Tun and Col Maung Pa and Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Pham Quang Khom. Secretary-General U Than Aung and Mr Hoang Thinh exchanged souvenirs and cordially discussed matters relating to friendly ties between the two nations.

YANGON., 24 Jan.- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw received Vice-Chairman of Samsung Electronics of the ROK Mr Young Suph Oh and party at his office at 3 p.m. yesterday. Also present were Managing Director of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications U Maung Maung Tin and officials.

YANGON., 23 Jan.- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone received Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy of China Mr Jin Honggen and party, Managing Director of SCS Holdings Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, Mr Datuk Tiu Ah Chai and party and Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad Bin Noh at his office at 2 p.m., 2.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. today separately. (3) Bronze bell donated to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image
YANGON., 24 Jan.- Headmaster of No 1 Basic Education High School in Dagon Township, Yangon Division, U Kyaw Kyaw, teachers, students and their parents, and families of educational staff this morning donated a bronze bell weighing 268 viss worth K 582,000 to be kept on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept, at the school. In the afternoon, the headmaster, teachers and students conveyed the bell to the hill and handed it over to Mindhamma Hill Board of Trustees. They then served the pilgrimages with VeVe soft drink.
Information and Record Committee meets
YANGON., 24 Jan.- The coordination meeting of the Information and Record Committee for All-round Development of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image and Mindhamma Hill took place at the meeting hall of the Myanma Radio and Television this morning. Present were Chairman of the committee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen. Aung Thein, Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay and committee members, Historian Dr U Khin Maung Nyunt and guests. The chairman give instructions on arrangements for publishing of record book and photo album featuring the events during the period of conveying and carving the image and all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill, and information and documentation tasks to be carried out at consecration ceremony of the image and the first Buddha Pujaniya. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the deputy minister.
(4) Talks on MMCWA and MNWCWA held
YANGON., 24 Jan.- Talks on the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and the Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, under the arrangement of the Myanmar ASEAN Women's Friendship Association, was held at Wunzin Minyaza Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.
Present were Chief Patron of the MAWFA Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members Daw San Yon and Daw Khin Swe Soe, Vice-Chairperson of MNWCWA Professor Daw May May Yee, woman diplomats of foreign Embassies in Yangon and wives of the diplomats, woman resident representatives of UN agencies and wives of resident representatives of UN agencies, executives and members of the association, wives of foreign Ambassadors to Myanmar, and woman staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe explained the purpose and tasks of MMCWA and work carried out by the MMCWA.
Then, Prof. Daw May May Yee explained the purpose and tasks of MNWCWA and work carried out by the MNWCWA. Daw Tin Tin Oo, wife of Director-General of the Foreign Languages Department U Nyi Nyi Than, and Daw Soe Nyunt Kyaing of Ngwe Nan Soe Tour Service presented K 100,000 each for the friendship association and Managing Director of Panpadetha Co Daw Myint Myint Wai K 50,000 to Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, who presented certificates of honour to the wellwishers. 22nd Myanmar Dental Conference, FDI and MDA joint meeting continueYANGON., 24 Jan.- The 22nd Myanmar Dental Conference and the Third Joint Meeting of World
Dental Federation (FDI) and Myanmar Dental Association (MDA) continued for the second day at
Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road at 9 am today. Present were the chairman of dental and oral medical council, rectors of Universities of Dental Medicine (Yangon) and (Mandalay), the chairman and executives of MDA, President of World Dental Federation (FDI) Dato Dr A Ratnanesan, Asia-Pacific Dental Federation Chairman Dr Chan Chao Chang and officials, dentists of foreign countries and guests. Professor Dr Nan Shein presided over the conference.Then, Dr Benjamin Long, Dr Huyum Anh Lan, Professor Dr Khin Maung Lay, Dr Swe Swe Win, Dr Shwe Toe, Dr Zaw Moe Thein, Dr Mai Nishioka, Dr Yi Yi Moe and Dr Ko Ko Maw presented papers. Dr U Aung Myint presided over the afternoon session and Professor Dr Stephen Wei presented the paper to the conference. The 12th new executive committee of MDA with Prof. Dr Ba Myint as chairman, Prof. Dr Thein Htut as vice-chairman and Prof. Dr Myo Win as general secretary was elected. (5) Seminar on Information Technology begins in Mandalay
YANGON., 24 Jan.- A ceremony to open the Information Technology in Myanmar: Business Outlook and Opportunities, co-organized by Bagan Cybertech IDC & Teleport Myanmar and Information and Resources Centre of Singapore and sponsored by Sasakawa Southeast Asia Cooperation Fund of Japan, was held at Swan Hotel on 26th Street in Mandalay at 9 am today.

Contract signed for distribution of pencilsYANGON., 24 Jan.- A contract to distribute pencils and colour-pencils for basic education students between the Ministry of Education and Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation was signed by Director-General U Bo Win of the Education Planning and Training Department and Managing Director Mr Fumiyoshi Sakurai of Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation, with the attendence of Minister for Education U Than Aung and officials of the ministry and the corporation, at the Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) this afternoon.
(6) Entries invited for 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Poetry competitions
YANGON., 24 Jan.- The sub-committee for organizing poetry competitions of Work committee for holding poetry and arts competitions will hold poetry competitions in commemoration of the 57th
Anniversary Armed Forces Day. Short and long poems must feature points on the objectives of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, fine traditions of the Tatmadaw, Konbaung Era (AD 1824-1885), colonial age (AD 1885-1948), independence time (AD 1948-1988), and the State Law and Order Restoration Council and the State Peace and Development Council period. Religious tasks, nation-building tasks, narcotic drugs eradication tasks and restoration of peace of the State Peace and Development Council may also be composed.The competitions will be categorised into long-poem (levels 1 and 2) and short-poem (levels 1 and 2). Apart from those first, second and third winners in national level competitions, others are to enter level-2 competitions. Short poems must be between 100 and 300 stanzas and long ones between 1,000 and 2,000. A suitable title for the entry can be given. Free verses and modern poems will not be taken into consideration. The entry must be written only on one side of paper, must be own creation of the competitor. Colour Photo Contest to mark 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day to be heldYANGON., 24 Jan.- The work committee for holding the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day,
Commemorative Literary and Photo Contests has announced that it will hold the colour photo contest. The titles for the contest are "the nation-building endeavours across the entire Myanmar" and "cherishable culture and arts". The photographers may send four print entries for each category, 10"x12" and above. Prize-winners must submit the negative. Data and captions about the entries are to be provided on a separate sheet, together with the entries. The entrants must state that they have not won prizes at any other local or international competitions or appeared in publications.Handsome prizes will be presented to first, second and third prize winners as well as to special prize
winners. First, second and third prize winners will be presented prizes in Yangon on 27 March, the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and special prize winners will be given prizes in respective military commands on that day. The entries are to be sent to U Tun Min, Director (Information and Public Relations) of the Information and Public Relations Department, 22-24, Pansodan Street, Yangon, not later than 14 February 2002.
(7) Myanmar Ten Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition continues
YANGON., 24 Jan.- The Myanmar Ten Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition 2002, organized by
Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Association (Central) continued at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road for the fifth day today. Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt visited the exhibition and signed in the visitors' book. The exhibition was crowded with monks, people, tourists, arts- lovers, students and teachers. Famous painters brought the exhibition to life by painting portraits in five minutes. In the morning, painter U Nyan Shein gave talks on the late painter Yemintha Saya Hsaung. The talks was crowded with interesting persons including students and teachers. On display at the exhibition are paintings of famous painters, various sculptures, and 33 private booths and sculptures. Summit Art Gallery, SI Art Gallery, Ivy Art Gallery, Orient Art Gallery, Sunflower Art Gallery and Romantic Art Gallery also opened booths there. The exhibition will be kept open till 1 February.
Demonstration of Ikonos Satellite and Satellite Image heldYANGON., 24 Jan.- The demonstration of Ikonos Satellite and Satellite Image, organized by Space Imaging Inc and Suntac Technologies of Myanmar, was held at International Business Centre here on 19 January morning. Present on the occasion were senior military officers from the Ministry of Defence, deputy ministers, departmental heads, rectors and professors from universities and colleges, teachers and technicians.
Regional Vice-President Mr Bob Noack of Space Imaging Inc explained the formation of Space Imaging, detailed data of Ikonos satellite and new generation Ikonos Block (2) 0.5 Meter Resolution satellites with the help of computer slides. As Ikonos satellite photos are useful in special projects such as agriculture, construction, dams, exploring natural resource and gas and oil, research on development of rivers, communication and housing planning, technicians took part in discussions. Marketing Director Mr Foo Weng Kee explained details on projects that can be carried out using Ikonos photos.

They will attend the coodination meeting with officials of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to hold the Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Trophy Five-Country Invitational Hockey Tournament to be held in Myanmar from the end of March to the first week of April.They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by President of MHF Commandant of Defence

Hockey teams of Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Myanmar will take part in the Five- Country Invitational Hockey Tournament. The coach of Pakistan will train 25 tentatively selected Myanmar hockey players, under the arrangements of Pakistani Ambassador Mr Mian Yusuf Shah and Pakistan Hockey Federation, beginning first week of February.
Wellwishers invited for sinking tube-wellsYANGON., 24 Jan.- The Development Committee under the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs are making concerted efforts in order to get sufficient fresh water in rural areas in States and Divisions where there is a shortage of water. One 200 feet deep two-inch diameter tube-well cost K 250,000; one 400 feet deep two-inch diameter tube-well K 500,000; and one 200 feet deep four-inch diameter tube-well K 500,000. (9) Stimulant tablets and opium seized in Mongping
YANGON., 24 Jan.- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar
Police Force, acting on a tip-off, on 16 January searched a vehicle driven by Ar Chan, son of U Aik Kar of Pang Hsan, in Mongping, Shan State (East). Ma Li Li, daughter of U Aik Paleik of Pang Hsan, was in the car. The authorities nabbed them together with 31,500 stimulant tablets and 0.51847 kilo of raw opium. Action was taken against them under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station concerned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the Matriculation or equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the requirements or not.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONForeign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country of their residence, or at the examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers, namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001. The written entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate who passes the written examination must sit for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is liberal and flexible enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students. The students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.
VISA & OTHER EXPENSES
Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding and messing for foreign students will be provided free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
