(1) Shan State (South) USDA holds mass rally to support national, rural development tasks of Government

YANGON. 18 Jan.-Shan State (South) Union Solidarity and Development Association held a mass rally to  support the national and rural development tasks of the Government at Nyaungbin Htaung Ground in  front of Aungban Station in Kalaw Township on 14 January morning. Over 11,000 members of USDA  marched in eight columns the Kalaw column comprising over 2,000 USDA members led by U Nanda  Hla Myint, the Hopong column comprising over 500 USDA members led by U Kyaw Kyaw Naing, the  Taunggyi column comprising over 2,000 USDA members led by U Kyaw Kyaw, the Pinlaung column  comprising over 300 USDA members led by U Sai Than Lwin, the Yaksawk column comprising over  600 USDA members led by U San Win, the Pindaya column comprising over 600 USDA members led  by U Win Kyi, the Ywangan column comprising 400 USDA members led by U Moe Tun and the  Nyaungshwe column comprising over 700 USDA members led by U Soe Nyunt Shwe to the grounds.

Secretary of Shan State (South) USDA U Nyan Lin presided over the rally together with Taunggyi
District USDA Secretary U Sai Tin Htwe and Loilin District USDA Secretary U Sai Pa. Taunggyi  District USDA Executive Daw Khin Thanda Oo acted as master of ceremonies while Kalaw Township  USDA Executive Daw Moe Thu Tint acted as co-master of ceremonies.

Shan State (South) USDA Secretary U Nyan Lin made an opening speech. He said that arrangements  have been to implement the 30-year plan covering in forestry, agricultural, livestock breeding, industry,  transport, education and health sectors for sustainable development of the State while the third five-year  short-term plan from 2001-2002 to 2005-2006 is being implemented for the national economic  development. Tasks are to be implemented for promotion of national economic development based on  natural resources, manpower, morale and intellectual power of the people. He quoted the guidance of  Patron of USDA Senior General Than Shwe at the opening of USDA Myanmar Affairs and  International Studies Course No 4, USDA Executives Management Course No 23, and International  Relations Course No 7 as saying that the USDA was formed to serve the interests of the nation.

Now the State is making progress and the entire members of the Association are to cooperate in  national development tasks with added momentum. He urged all members to participate in rural  development tasks and in implementing the third five-year short-term plan with might and main in  accordance with the future plans. In conclusion, he urged the USDA members to accept the  government's nation-building endeavours as national tasks, to maintain the prevalence of peace and  tranquillity, to participate in nation-building endeavours and to pay serious attention to rural development  tasks. Then, Taunggyi District USDA Executive U Sai Khin Maung Aye tabled a motion calling for  support of national development endeavours of the Government. He said that there were 475 dams in  1988-89 and there are now 593 dams.

Altogether 53 dams including Zawgyi Dam have been built in Shan State (South). More motor roads,  railroads, bridges, airports and ports have been built in order to ensure easy transport among all the  regions of the nation. In Shan State (South), Namsang Airport, Shwe-nyaung-Yaksawk railroad,  Aungban-Loikaw railroad, Shwenyaung-Taunggyi-Ban-yin-Hsaikkhaung railroad, and  Namsang-Mongnai railroad have been built. Moreover, Hsaik-khaung-Namsang railroad is under  construction. In electric power sector, 26 hydel power stations have been constructed during the period  of a decade. In Shan State (South), Zawgyi 1 and Zawgyi 2 hydel power stations have been built in  Yaksawk Township. Moreover, the large-scale projects Yeywa Hydel Power Station, Bilin Hydel  Power Station, and Paunglaung Hydel Power Station are being implemented.

In addition to hydel power stations, gas power plants and coal power plant are being built. The largest  coal power plant is under construction in Tikyit Village, Pinlaung Township and a cement plant has been  built at the same village. Besides, a germ deposit has been struck in Monghsu Township and it created  job opportunities for over 100,000 people including locals. In Shan State (South), there were 1,930  schools before 1988-89 and at present there are 2,330 schools with an increase of 400. Altogether 678  schools were opened in border areas where there were no schools in the past.

Afterwards, Leikha Township USDA Executive Daw Nan Su Su Nwe seconded the motion of  Taunggyi District USDA Executive U Sai Khin Maung Aye. She said that only when proportionate  development throughout the nation can be made, will a new modern and peaceful national emerge. So  priority was given to border area development tasks. Small villages in border areas turned into the big  ones and Aungpan, Shwenyaung, Pwehla, Heho, Naungtaya, and Tikyit villages also turned into small  towns. A total of 2,642 miles of earth roads, 1,395 miles of gravel roads, 281 miles of tarred roads, 39  big bridges, 624 small bridges and 16 suspension bridges have been built and tasks for border area  development are under way.

In Shan State (South) 166 miles of roads for border areas have been constructed. Schools, hospitals,  dispensaries, electric power stations, industries and farming have been emerged everywhere in border  areas where there were no those facilities in the past. Private entrepreneurs are engaging in agricultural  farms in Inlay, Aungpan, Yaksawk, Ywangan, and Hsihseng townships in the region, and these farms  are models for local people. In Kakku Village in the region, pagodas countable by the thousands were  being renovated, and Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions are held yearly in  order to honour new generation youths. Next, Phekhon Township USDA Executive Daw Aye Cho Sein  tabled the motion calling for participation of USDA members in rural development tasks. She said it can  be obviously seen that construction tasks of the State benefited the rural community of the country.

The Government built 118 dams for development of agricultural sector with the view to ensuring
economic development of the rural area. Tarred roads, gravel roads and earth roads are being  connected as the network between rural and urban areas. Regarding education sector, over 400 schools  were extended in Shan State (South) for improvement of education standard as well as economic  development of rural area. There were 8,333 strength of teachers in 1988-89 and at present 9,972  showing an increase of 1,639 teachers appointed. Over 88,000 students are pursuing education in the  region. The illiteracy elimination campaign and enrolment of school going age plans are being  implemented.

 Therefore, over 91 per cent of children are attending the schools and arrangements are being made for  increasing cent per cent enrolment of school going age. In the rural health care sector, three hospitals,  two rural health care units, one nursing training school and one traditional hospital have been opened in  Shan State (South). The Government is paid emphasis on expectation of life span of the people including  rural community and improvement of their health standard. She firmly tabled the motion calling for  participation of USDA members to join hands with the State in rural area development tasks in accord  with the future tasks of the association.

 Then, Loilem District USDA Executive U Myo Min Aung seconded the motion tabled by Phekhon
Township USDA Executive Daw Aye Cho Sein calling for motion calling for participation of USDA  members in rural development tasks. He said that emphasis is to lay on implementation of rural
development tasks which are contiguous to the State's economic tasks. The development of accent and  basic principle could not be undertaken without rural development of the State. Due to the State's  economic based on the agriculture sector, if modern agricultural method and agro-economic life would  be increased, development of rural area could be flourished in time. At a time the Government is  undertaking five development aims of rural area, the agricultural sector is being upgraded into the  modern agro-economic life and the use of systematic agricultural method. Assistance is being provided  to livestock breeding tasks from manageable scale to commercial scale.

The task on uplift of the rural area economy is flourishing now. Therefore, he heartily supported the rural  development tasks laid down by the State and urged the association members to actively participate in  the rural development tasks. In conclusion, he heartily supported the motion tabled by Daw Aye Cho  Sein for participation of USDA members in rural development tasks being carried out by the State with  a view to ensuring development of the entire nation and the national people. Then, the rally passed the  resolutions in support of the State's development tasks, rural development tasks laid down by the State  and participation of USDA members in national and rural development tasks. Later, the mass rally  ended with chanting the slogans.


(2) Maj-Gen. Soe Win and Maj-Gen. Ye Myint tour Sagaing Division 

YANGON. 18 Jan.-Members of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Soe Win and  Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of Ministry of Defence accompanied by Minister for Information Maj-Gen. Kyi  Aung and Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung left Lehi for Leshi by  helicopter morning of 16 January and morning and arrived in Leshi, Sagaing Division at 11 am. Maj-Gen.  Soe Win and Maj-Gen. Ye Myint met with departmental officials at the hall of Leshi township and gave  necessary instructions.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen. Kyi Aung inspected the office of Information and Public Relations  Department, library and TV re-transmission station of Myanma Radio and Television in Leshi and gave  necessary instructions. Similarly, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung  inspected the police station in Leshi township. He met with members of police force and fulfilled the  requirements. Maj-Gen. Soe Win and Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party proceeded to Tamu by helicopter in  the afternoon and arrived in Tamu at 1.50 p.m.

Maj-Gen. Soe Win and party left Tamu for Monywa by helicopter. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party met  with departmental officials and service personnel at the office of Tamu District Peace and Development  Council and the border trade camp in Tamu. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party left Tamu for Kalay by cars  in the evening. Minister for Information Maj-Gen. Kyi Aung inspected IPRD office, construction of  newspaper sub-printing house and TV re-transmission station in Kalay and left necessary instructions.

Adjutant-General Maj-Gen. Thein Sein hosts dinner in honour of victorious Ministry of Defence team

YANGON. 18 Jan.-A dinner was hosted in honour of the manager, the coach and the footballers of the  Ministry of Defence Team which achieved victory in the first National Olympic Council Chairman  Trophy Open Soccer Tournament for 2002 by Member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Defence Services Sports and Physical Education Management Committee  Adjutant-General Maj-Gen. Thein Sein in conjunction with cash donation ceremony at Kandawgyi  Palace Hotel at 7 p.m. today.

Also present were Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and  Development Council Commander of
Yangon Command  Brig-Gen. Myint Swe, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura  Aye Myint, Vice-
Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo,  military officers and those of Ministry of Defence, victorious  footballers, the manger and the coach of the Ministry of  Defence team and donors. On the occasion,  Adjutant-General Maj-Gen. Thein Sein delivered an address.

Then, Chairman of Defence Services Football Committee Principal of Defence Services Self-defence  and Sports Institute Col Htein Lin accepted K 2 million each for Defence Services Football Committee  donated by Managing Director U Zaw Win Naing of Kanbawza Bank Limited and Chairman U Thet  Oo of Aye Yar Myae Companies Group. The victorious footballers, the manager and the coach of the  Ministry of Defence were served with dinner.


(3) e-Asean Working Group meets

YANGON. 18 Jan. - The 9th meeting of e-Asean Working Group of the ASEAN countries was held at  the Myanmar ICT Park in Hline Township this morning. It was attended by responsible officials of the  ASEAN Secretariat and representatives of the e-Asean Working Group of the ASEAN countries, and  they discussed matters related to the implementation of prerequisites included in e-Asean Framework  Agreement. The meeting will continue tomorrow.

SWRR Minister accepts donations of Jakoen Nunnery, Japan 

YANGON. 18 Jan. - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen. Sein Htwa accepted  the donations of Komasu Chiko, Japanese nun of Jakoen Nunnery in Japan at his office this afternoon.  On behalf of Komasu Chiko, Dr Ilda Iasuku and Mr Mashimo Takesaburo presented one million yen  for orphans and aged persons, K 30,000 for staff welfare of the minister's office and K 30,000 for staff  welfare of the Fire Services Department to the minister.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for SWRR U Hlaing Win, Director-General of Social  Welfare Department U Sit Myaing, Director-General of Fire Services Department U Myint Tun,  Director-General of Relief and Resettlement Department U Than Oo and Head of Office U Maung Pi.

Japanese geneticists read papers on Animal Genetic Resources in Myanmar

YANGON. 18 - Seven geneticists from universities in Tokyo, Nagoya and Hiroshima read papers at a  seminar on Animal Genetic Resources in Myanmar at Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department  on 10 January. Jointly organized by LBVD of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and Japan  academy of geneticists, it was presided over by Chairman of Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Council Dr  Mya Nyunt.

The Japanese geneticists also replied to queries raised by the participants. The Japanese academy
presented genetic equipment worth ´ 206,000 to the department. Director-General of LBVD U Maung  Maung Nyunt accepted the cash. Also present at the meeting were Chairman of Myanmar Veterinary  Surgeons Association Dr Than Daing, heads of department and veterinary surgeons.


(4) Ministry of Mines holds co-ord meeting

YANGON. 18 Jan. - A coordination meeting to review the accomplishments of the second four-monthly  and third four-monthly period for 2001 and to exceed the targets for first four-monthly period for 2002  of the Ministry of Mines was held at the ministry this morning. Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint  presided over the meeting and delivered a speech.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, directors-generals, managing directors,  managers and officials of the departments and enterprises under the ministry. The deputy minister,  directors-general, managing directors and managers reported on their works with the use of computer  and projector. The minister discussed matters relating to meeting the targets, inventive measures taken,  technology and study. Then, outstanding students of the staff of the ministry who passed the  matriculation examination with flying colours for the 2001-2002 academic year were awarded prizes.

Mayor receives LPDR delegation

YANGON. 18 Jan.- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay received visiting  CEC member of the People's Revolution Party of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Governor of  Borikhamxay Province Mr Thongbanh Sengaphone and party at Shwewatun Hall of Uto-kyar-in region  agriculture and livestock breeding project in Taikkyi Township this morning.

The Laotian delegation arrived here at the invitation of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin
Maung Win. The mayor explained facts about agriculture and livestock breeding projects being
undertaken by YCDC with the use of video tapes. Then, the mayor conducted the goodwill delegation  round the fresh water prawn and fish breeding work.

The Laotian delegation visited vegetable plantations thriving at the project area, functions of 25-ton rice  mill, the oil mill and the briquette factory. Next, the delegation viewed land reclamation in Indwingyi  region, agriculture and livestock breeding tasks in Kyar-in region and research work conducted at  Paddy, Vegetable and Fruit Research Centre. Afterwards, the mayor visited fresh water shrimp  breeding ponds in the region. In the afternoon, the mayor met with 100 trainees attending Myanmar  Affairs and International Study Course No 4 of USDA and explained to them facts about agriculture  and livestock breeding tasks.


(5)  MWVO Central Organizing Committee meets

YANGON. 18 Jan. - Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee held its
meeting  No 1/2002 at Myanmar War Veterans Organization (Central) office this afternoon, addressed by  Chairman of MWVOCOC Member of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General  Maj-Gen. Thein Sein. Also present were members of MWVOCOC and leaders of the working bodies.

Secretary of MWVOCOC Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung explained  the resolutions of the meeting No 7/2001 and progress of work. MWVCOC members presented a  report on the implementation of the five tasks by the leaders of the respective working bodies. The  leaders of the working bodies then took part in the discussions. The meeting ended with concluding  remarks by the MWVOCOC Chairman.

KOTRA presents economic award to Myanmar company

YANGON. 18 Jan. - Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) presented an award to a  Myanmar company for its excellent performance in the field of economy at Sedona hotel here this  evening. The award-presentation ceremony was sponsored by Office of the Commercial Attaché of the  Embassy of the Republic of Korea. ROK Ambassador Mr Chung Jung-gun presented the award to  Chairman U Aung Tun of Aung-tha-bye Trading Co Ltd. Mr Chung Jung-gun and Commercial Attaché  Mr Kim Jae-chan gave speeches. Economic progress of ROK was presented to the guests with  audio-visual aids. Then, U Aung Tun spoke words of thanks.


(6) Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Contest continues

YANGON. 18 Jan.- The 11th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Contest in
commemoration  of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day continued for the eighth day at the People's Square on Pyay  Road this morning. Before the competition, bands comprising students of South Okkalapa Basic  Education High School Nos 1 and 5 presented skill demonstrations. Then, bands representing No 7  Operations Control Command, No 3 Basic Military Training Depot, No 6 Basic Military Training  Depot, South-East Command, No 15 Operations Control Command, No 16 Operations Control  Command and No 5 Operations Control Command took part in the Contest.

Afterwards, Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the Contest Vice-Adjutant-General  Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo accepted 1,000 note books worth K 250,000 for the leading committee donated  by U Maung Maung Kyi-Ma Cho (Gawbyar Binding Service) and presented a certificate of honour to  donors. Leaders of the student bands accepted cash prizes. Also present on the occasion were  Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day  Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen. Myint Swe, senior military officers, members of the panel  of judges, guests, Tatmadawmen and their families, teachers and students.

Cash donated to Library of ITBMU

YANGON. 18 Jan. - Well-wisher Mr Steven Hung, New Mainland Int'l Development, donated US $ 400,  FEC 50 units and K 200,000 to the Library of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University  on 12 January for purchase of Buddhist treatises. Pro-rector (Admin) of the University Dr Hla Pe  accepted the donation and presented the certificate of honour to the wellwisher. Officials of MV  Doulos, which is registered at the GBA (Good Books for All) based in Germany also donated about  300 assorted books on 62 subjects, to the Library on the same day.


(7) Minister visits MMA Conference

YANGON. 18 Jan. - Minister for Health Maj-Gen. Ket Sein visited Medicine and Medical Equipment  Exhibition of the 48th Conference of Myanmar Medical Association this morning. Accompanied by  Deputy Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint and officials, the minister visited the booths of the exhibition.  President of MMA Prof. Dr Myo Myint and executives conducted them around the exhibition.

The minister and party then visited the conference. A team led by Physician Dr Ye Myint of Yangon  General Hospital presented a paper on HIV/AIDS treatment and control. The paper covered a wide  range of sectors including medicines and therapies, control of HIV/AIDS-related diseases and public  education. They replied to queries raised by the participants. The deputy minister also explained the  basic policies of the State's HIV-AIDS control programme.


(8) CEC member tours Shan State (North)

YANGON. 18 Jan.- Member of Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and  Development Association Col Tin Hlaing toured Nawnghkio, Hsipaw, Lashio, Kutkai, Hsenwi,  Kunlong, Muse, Namhkam, Hopang, Chinshwehaw and Laukkai townships in Shan State  (North) from 11 to 16 January. The CEC member gave instructions on tasks of the association  to USDA members at township USDA offices and village organization camps.

The CEC member gave instructions on basic principles of the association and guidance of the  Patron of the association to be implemented at different levels of the association, participation  in five sectors of rural development tasks in cooperation with respective organizations and  active participation in implementation of three resolutions laid down at the mass rally to  support in national and rural development tasks. Then, the CEC member presented clothing,  blankets, warn-clothes, magazines, journals, books on codes of conduct of USDA members for  local people in border areas and USDA members to respective village organizers.


(9)  National races go on study tour

YANGON. 18 Jan. - At the invitation of Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas  and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt, a  study group of Mro and Khami national races from Buthidaung and Maungtaw townships in Rakhine  State, visited Hlinethaya Industrial Zone this morning as part of their study programme of the  development of the State,. The study group visited FMI City, Pun Hlaing Golf Course Housing, Tokyo  Pipe Factory and the garment factories. In the afternoon, the study group visited National Museum.  They paid a visit to the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image in the evening and made cash  donations for the Image.


INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION

International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University will open in June for 2002 academic year. The first semester for academic year 2002 begins in June and ends in October. The second semester begin on  1st December and ends in March 2003. Those students who are qualified for  Diploma course can send  their application forms to the Registrar, international Theravada Buddhist Missionary University,  Dhammapala Hill, Mayangone P.O., Yangon, Myanmar. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the  Matriculation or  equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or  B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for  Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not  older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the  requirements or not.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Foreign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country  of their residence, or at the  examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers,  namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The  closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001.  The written  entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate  who passes the  written examination must sit  for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their  residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is  liberal and flexible  enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students.  The  students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any  recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.

VISA & OTHER EXPENSES

Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care  of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding  and messing for foreign students will be provided  free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
