(1) Secretary-1 receives member House of Councillor of JapanYANGON, 14 Jan.- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt received Mr Hideo Watanabe of House of Councillors of Japan and party at the Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 9 am today. Also Present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen. Abel, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet. The guests were accompanied by Japanese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori and officials.
Secretary-1 inspects regional development tasks in Htantabin township
YANGON, 14 Jan-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt
accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office inspected upgrading of Htantabin-Hlaing Thaya short-cut and regional development tasks in Htantabin township this morning. At the work site of the short-cut upgrading project, departmental heads and officials reported to the Secretary-1 on tasks being implemented for development of Hlaing Thaya and Htantabin region construction of buildings, betterment of transportation, supply of clean water and supply of electricity. Then, the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Later, the Secretary-1 inspected construction of buildings which will contribute to the development of the region. After giving necessary instructions, the Secretary-1 left there.

Secretary-1 inspects construction of Chindwin Bridge (Monywa)
YANGON, 14 Jan-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt and party arrived at the construction site of Chindwin Bridge (Monywa) in Mindaunk Village on 12 January. Senior Engineer U San Nyein of Public Works reported on facts about the Chindwin Bridge (Monywa), completion of main piles of the bridge, future tasks, construction of approach bridges on the bank of Monywa and that of Letkhokepin in Salingyi Township and progress of work. Monywa-Kalewa Road Construction Project in-charge Col Soe Thein reported on construction of 115-mile-long and 30-foot-wide Monywa-Alon-Yagyi-Myoma-Kalewa earth road, the paving of a 40-mile-long section with tar, the paving of the road with gravel, construction of conduit pipes and future tasks.
The Secretary-1 then gave instructions. The Secretary-1 inspected progress of work in building
Chindwin Bridge (Monywa). The bridge links Mindaunk Village in Monywa and Letkhokepin Village in Salingyi Township. The lower structure will be built of reinforced concrete and the upper structure of steel trusses. The bridge is 4,730 feet long and 28 feet wide. Itt has two six-foot-wide walkways and can withstand 60-ton loads. Construction of the approach bridge of Chindwin Bridge (Monywa) has been completed. Installation of beams has been completed by 99 %, and installation of reinforced concrete beams and flooring by 61 %. Installation of steel trusses is under way. Construction of the whole bridge has been completed by 55 %. Monywa-Ahlon-Yagyi- Myoma-Kalewa road is being constructed.The distance between Monywa and Kalewa is 160 miles long via Monywa-YayU-Taze- Thetkalkyin road. On completion of the bridge and the road, the distance between them will be 115 miles long via Monywa-Alon-Yagyi-Myoma-Kalewa road, and the construction of the new road cut the distance by 46 miles. On completion of the Monywa-Alon-Yagyi-Myoma-Kalewa road, over 60 villages along the road will develop and the socio-economic life of local people will improve.
Monywa-Alon-Yagyi-Myoma-Kalewa road will be the shortest road linking Sagaing Division and Chin State on completion of Chindwin Bridge (Monywa). It will also contribute towards the development of Naga region and Chin State, improvement of quality of life of local people and national solidarity. In addition, the road will also become the shortest road which provides access to the Indian border. It will contribute to development of border trade between the two countries and bring about economic deveopment of the State. Efforts are being made to complete the road and the bridge as soon as possible in accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied by Deputy Commander of North-West
Command Brig-Gen. Soe Myint, inspected the surfacing of a 20-mile-section with tar along Monywa-Alon-Yagyi-Myoma-Kalewa road. The Secretary-1 and party arrived at the 20th mile camp near Chaungma Village in Kani Township. They were welcomed by the Monywa-Kalewa Road Construction Project in-charge Col Soe Thein and officials. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the paving of another 20-mile-long section with tar on Monywa-Kalewa road.The Secretary-1 and party arrived at the 40th mile camp near Yagyi Village-tract in Kani Township. The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by members of Kani Township Peace and Development Council, chairmen of Yagyi Village-tract Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and local people. The forty-mile-long section of the road from Monywa to Kalewa road has been tarred. The Secretary-1 met chairmen of Yagyi village-tract Peace and Development Councils, education and health staff. The chairmen of Yagyi Village-tract Peace and Development Councils reported on the condition of cultivation work.
The Secretary-1 said agricultural produce can now be transported easily and smoothly as the condition of transport in the region is improving. He called on all to work hard for regional development, cultivation, conservation of forests and durability of the roads. Education and health staff reported on civil service affairs and measures undertaken for education and health. The Secretary-1 fulfilled the requirements. The Secretary-1 and party arrived at Meme Village in Mingin Township where they were welcomed by Brig-Gen. Khin Maung Aye of Kale Station, members of Kale District and Mingin Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of USDA, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, members of women's affairs committee, teachers, students and local people.
The Secretary-1 and party gave oral polio vaccines to children under five to mark the Seventh Year Immunization Days (Second Round) in the compound of Meme Village Basic Education High School Branch. The Secretary-1 met members of Kale District and Mingin Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of USDA, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association and members of women's affairs committee at the hall of Meme Village BEHS. Secretary of Kale District Peace and Development Council Major Myint Lwin reported on transport, water supply for urban and rural areas, sown acreage, kind of crops and cultivation of crops, livestock breeding and measures undertaken for education and health.
Chairman of Mingin Township Peace and Development Council U Kim Khant Paung reported on
regional development including transport, water supply, education and health. Headmistress Daw San Yu Mar reported on academic matters and civil service affairs. The Secretary-1 presented television sets, video cassette player, cassette player, a generator, 600 dozens of exercise books and teaching aids for the school to Headmistress Daw San Yu Mar. The Secretary-1 presented medical equipment for Myoma health centre to Daw Ni Ni Aung.The Secretary-1 then fulfilled the requirements. He said Kalay District is an important region for linking both India and Chin State. Therefore the government is providing assistance for construction of roads and bridges and fulfilling the regional requirements including education and health. The Kalay-Tamu road was opened and the shorter Monywa-Yagyi-Kalaywa road is being built instead of using the existing longer road across Mahamyaing Forest, he said.
The Monywa-Yagyi-Kalaywa road, a shorter one, is being constructed with the goodwill to bring about development of villages along the road under the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, he said. Earth work for the Monywa-Yagyi-Kalaywa road has been completed and the 40-mile section of the road has been tarred. On completion of the whole road, economy in the region will develop and quality of life of local people will improve, he added.
Concerted efforts are to be made for more regional development, for raising the living standard of local people and for boosting production of agricultural produce after realizing the goodwill of the Head of State and the government, he said. Now five rural area development tasks are being systematically implemented under the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe. The objectives will be realized rapidly if the rural people participate in the tasks, he said. Efforts are to be made for consolidation of social associations such as USDA, MCWA, women's affairs committee, auxiliary fire brigade and Red Cross Brigade that are participating in the tasks for progress of social activities including rural development under the arrangement of the government, he said.
He said the government is building infrastructures on regional and economic development for raising the living standard of the people and enjoyment of better social results. The Secretary-1 called on local people to participate in regional development tasks. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 inspected students studying at language lab and students saying prayers at the altar room at Me Me village Basic Education High School (branch).
The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Kalay where they were welcomed by Col Zaw Win of Kalay Station, military officers, departmental officials, members of USDA and family members of
Tatmadawmen. Later, the Secretary-1 and party attended the oral polio vaccine giving ceremony of the second round of the Seventh Year National Immunization Days held at Military Hospital in Kalay and gave oral polio vaccine to the children under five. Next, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to General Hospital in Kalay where they were welcomed by Medical Superintendent Dr Thein Nyunt, specialists, physicians and nurses.Dr Thein Nyunt reported to the Secretary-1 on background history of the hospital, number of staff,
common diseases, giving treatment, existing buildings, extension of the hospital as 200-bed one,
providing modern medical equipment and medicines by the government, setting up a medical trust-fund and giving assistance to the needy patients. Then, Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Health Department and Senior Engineer U Saw Han of Public Works reported to the Secretary-1 on extension of ward (B) and extended construction of buildings in the hospital.Later, the Secretary-1 inspected the newly-constructed two-storey ward (A), the intensive care unit and the children's ward. He also inspected chosen site for construction of two-storey ward (B) and around the compound of the hospital. He gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at new building of Kalay airport. Senior Engineer U Saw Han of Public Works reported to the Secretary-1 on construction of the building which is 120 feet long and 60 feet wide. Minister for Transportation Maj- Gen. Hla Myint Swe reported to the Secretary-1 on extension of the runway and putting extra layer on the runway. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions. Then, he inspected the newly constructed airport building.
(3) USDA formed to safeguard Union, help build peaceful, modern and developed nation
Mass rally in support of national, rural development tasks held in Mon State
YANGON, 14 Jan. - A mass rally to support national and rural development tasks organized by Mon State Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at Yamanya Sports Grounds in
Mawlamyine Township, Mon State, on 11 January morning.It was attended by executives of Mon State USDA, executives of Mawlamyine District, Thaton District and Township USDAs and members of Kyaikto, Bilin, Thaton, Paung, Mawlamyine, Chaungzon, Kyaikmaraw, Mudon, Thanbyuzayat and Ye Township USDAs totalling about 20,000. Secretary of Mon State USDA U Tin Soe Moe Naing presided over the mass rally with executives of Mon State USDA U Ko Ko and Dr Khin Zaw Hlaing as members of the panel of chairmen. Executive of Phettan Ward USDA Daw Khin Malar acted as master of ceremonies with executive of Thaton Township USDA Daw Nang Nyo Nyo Win as co-master of ceremonies.
Chairman of the rally Secretary of Mon State USDA U Tin Soe Moe Naing said that the USDA was formed with the offspring of the national people with the aim of safeguarding the Union and building a peaceful, modern and developed nation. Therefore, all the members of the association are determined to actively participate in the efforts for the development of the nation.
The government is implementing tasks for national unity and peace and stability, for the development of economic infrastructures, for the enhancement of economic power, for the development of national human resources, for the improvement of social efficiency and for the promotion of regional and international cooperation in accord with the 12 national objectives. The development of rural areas where over 70 per cent of the population reside is to be given top priority. It is necessary to fulfil the needs of villages.
All the members of the association need to regard nation-building endeavours of the government as a
national working plan, to maintain peace and tranquillity and stability, to participate in the nation-
building tasks and to pay constant attention to rural development tasks. Executive of Bilin Township
USDA Maung Aung Bo Bo tabled a motion calling for support of national development tasks being
undertaken by the government. He said that in Mon State, Azin Dam, Wapa Dam, Shwenattaung Dam and Winphanon Dam have been built, and they can now irrigate 18,720 acres of land.In addition, Shwenattaung Dam supplies drinking water for the people in Mawlamyine. Kadaik Dam is being constructed in Paung Township. A study of the utilization of land in the country shows that there were 19.9 million acres of cultivated land in 1988-89 and 25.9 million acres of cultivated land in 2000- 2001. In Mon State, previously, there were 845,203 acres of cultivated land and there are now 1,121,617 acres of cultivated land. Monsoon paddy has been cultivated on 669,576 acres of land and summer paddy on 140,000 acres of land. The estimated yield of paddy for this year is 51.523 million baskets of paddy. In Mon State, Attaran Steel Suspension Bridge, Gyaing-Zathabyin Steel Suspension Bridge have been built. Now Ye River Bridge, which is important for Ye-Dawei Railroad, is under construction.
Thanlwin River Bridge (Mawlamyine), the longest of its kind in Myanmar, is also in course of
construction. Moreover, to better the condition of transport, 44 roads linking villages have been built in 2001-2002. As altogether 116 miles of roads have been built, the condition of transport is becoming more secure and easier. To promote the contribution of the industrial sector to the development of the nation, the government is working for generation of electricity. Within a decade, 26 hydroelectric power projects have been implemented, and major projects such as Yeywa Hydroelectric Power Project, Bilin Hydroelectric Power Project and Paung-laung Hydroelectric Power Project are being implemented.At the same time, gas power stations and coal-fired power stations are being built in the country. In
Mon State, arrangements are being made to open more auto-telephone stations and to install
magnetophones in rural areas. Afterwards, executive of Mawlamyine Township USDA Ma Thin Thin Mon seconded the motion tabled by executive of Bilin Township USDA Maung Aung Bo Bo. She said that in Mon State, the government technical college, the computer college and the education college have been opened, and Mawlamyine University has been extended as well.After 1988, new 13 basic education high schools, 18 middle schools and 115 primary schools have been opened. Multimedia teaching centres have been opened as well. In addition, nine learning centres and Pyinnya Yaungchi Modern Libraries have been opened in Mawlamyine and Thaton. In conclusion, she said that it can be seen that national development tasks of the government are making considerable progress, which benefit the new generation youth as well as the people.
Moreover, that progress contributes to the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation. Then, Paung Township USDA executive Ma Hnin Wint Aye tabled the motion calling for participation of USDA members in rural development tasks. She said it can be seen obviously that development affairs committees, the Water Resources Utilization Department and the Irrigation Department sank tube-wells and hand-pumps and built not only lakes, small dams and sluice gates but also dams, namely, Azin, Wapa, Shwenattaung and Win-phanon for water availability in Mon State.
Moreover, the government has been carrying out the nine-district greening projects since 1993 and now the projects have been extended to 13 districts with the aim of beautifying and greening the tropical regions. The government is giving priority to the implementation of the rural development tasks. Five objectives of rural development tasks laid down by the government are basic needs of the State. She believes that if these objectives would be implemented, poverty reduction in rural areas could be carried out. Therefore, she firmly called on USDA members to join hands with the State and the people in undertaking rural development tasks in accord with the future tasks of the association.
Afterwards, Chaungzon Township USDA executive Maung Myo Min Hlaing seconded the motion tabled by Paung Township USDA executive Ma Hnin Wint Aye calling for participation of USDA members in rural development tasks. He said USDA members made efforts for establishing model villages in cooperation with the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs which is performing development for rural areas, the General Administration Department and Maternal and Child Welfare Associations. By doing so, 40 model villages of Development Committees, 100 model villages of the General Administration Department and 41 model villages of MCWAs were established in Mon State.
Regarding rural health care services, priority is given to health care services that there were 1,337 rural health care units in 1988 and 1,402 units in 2000-2001 fiscal year. Similarly, regional health care units are opened from 64 units up to 84 units. In the education sector, 5,336 basic education schools are opened now more than the past a decade.
A total of 85 relay stations were built with a view to enabling the local people to enjoy TV programmes conveniently. In conclusion, he said the rural development tasks are noble tasks with a view to ensuring development of the entire nation. Therefore, he heartily supported the motion on actively participation of USDA members to achieve success of rural development tasks being undertaken by the State. Then, the rally passed the resolutions in support of the state's development tasks, rural development tasks laid down by the State and participation of USDA members in national and rural development tasks. Later, the rally ended with chanting the slogans.
(4) Maj-Gen. Maung Bo inspects development tasks in Kayin, Mon states
YANGON, 14 Jan. -Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, together with officials from the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental officials, left here for Hpa-an in Kayin State on 10 January afternoon and arrived there at night. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party were welcomed there by Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung, Commander of No 22 LID Col Ngwe Thein, Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Maung Shein, senior military officers and state level departmental officials. On 11 January morning, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo met with state/district/township departmental officials at the hall of Kayin State Peace and Development Council in Hpa-an.
Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung and departmental officials, chairmen and members of Hpa-an District and Hpa-an Township Peace and Development Councils, towns elders, members of USDA, township Women's Affairs Committee, township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and township War Veterans Organization. Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Maung Shein reported on rice production of Kayin State, utilization of land, production of other crops and sufficiency of rice to Maj-Gen. Maung Bo.
Then, Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung presented a supplementary report on administration of development tasks for the state. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo then made a speech. He said according to the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, he and departmental officials came there to fulfil the needs for regional development tasks of Kayin and Mon States.
He stressed the importance of the agriculture sector of Kayin State and urged the people to strive for
sufficiency of rice and to boost per acre yield of paddy, to use natural fertilizer and to grow quality
strains. For better transportation, the government is constructing bridges including Thanlwin river-
crossing bridge and it has become very convenient to the people in Kayin State, he pointed out. To
reciprocate to the goodwill of the State, people in Kayin State are to take responsibilities for tranquillity and development of the state. Kayin State will develop in all sectors if the State, the public and the Tatmadaw cooperate unitedly. Departmental officials in Kayin State are also to strive for the regional development with goodwill and willingness to take responsibility, he said. Then, the meeting came to a close.Maj-Gen. Maung Bo greeted those present cordially. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party visited Mebaung monastery in Hpa-an and paid obeisance to State Ovadaaria Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Mebaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indriya, and presented offertories to the Sayadaw. Afterwards, they arrived at Tayokehla Model Village in Hpa-an township where they were welcomed by departmental officials who are carrying out development tasks for the village and chairman and members of village Peace and Development Council. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo met with departmental officials at the hall of Tayokehla Model Village BEHS and heard the reports on education and health care tasks being carried out at the village by Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Maung Shein. After hearing the reports on development tasks by departmental officials, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo attended to the needs.
Then, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party inspected construction of new building for the school, Station
Hospital, monastery, village library, office of village Peace and Development Council, Winthuza shop
and river-water pumping project for 1,500 acres of field. They arrived at Mawlamyine in Mon State in the afternoon. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo met with state level departmental officials at Ramanya Hall of the state.Present were Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East
Command Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint, senior military
officers of the command headquarters, departmental officials, district and township authorities, officials of USDA, Mon State Working Committee for Women's Affairs, MCWA, Red Cross Society, Auxiliary Fire Brigade and War Veterans Organization. First, Commander Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung reported on regional economic development. Mon State Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Aung Hsan reported on cultivation and production of rice and other crops, Head of Mon State Settlement and Land Records Department U Thet Naing Oo on annual land reclamation, Head of Mon State Fisheries Department U Tin Hlaing on breeding of fish and prawn and Head of Mon State Planning Department Daw Than Myaing on sector-wise economic development and efforts for meeting the target. Speaking on the occasion, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo said that Mon State must put emphasis on development tasks based on agriculture sector and the meat and fish sector; efforts are to be made for boosting production of rice and paddy in the agriculture sector; similarly, it is necessary to extend cultivation of oil crops and pulses and
beans; the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation depends upon economic development of all states and divisions; the economic development of Mon State will contribute to economic development of the State; therefore, emphasis must be put on not only the agriculture sector but also on the extended production of meat, fish and prawn in the livestock breeding sector; construction of Thanlwin Bridge (Mawla-myine) is being undertaken for the develop Mon State and Taninthayi Division and local people and service personnel are to carry out regional development tasks after realizing goodwill and aims of the State.On 12 January morning, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo, accompanied by Commander Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint and officials, inspected the work site of Thanlwin Bridge (Mawla-myine) construction project on Mawlamyine bank and Winphanon Dam in Mudon Township.
Then, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party proceeded to Pepper Research and Development Centre of
Myanma Agriculture Service in Mudon. Officials conducted them round the centre. At the centre, quality strains of pepper are put under 85 acres of land and arrangements are made for extended cultivation. A total of 100,000 pepper saplings are being grown at the centre and the agricultural techniques for growing saplings are being distributed to the people. On 13 January morning, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo met with Thaton District and Township level departmental officials at Thuwunna Yeiktha in Thaton.Chairman of Thaton District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Maung and officials reported on agriculture and livestock breeding tasks. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo gave instructions on extension of sown acreage, use of quality strains for increase of per-acre yield and participation in regional development. After that, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party left there and arrived back here in the evening.
(5) Maj-Gen. Maung Bo inspects Winphanon Dam, building of Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine) in Mon State
YANGON, 14 Jan.- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, accompanied by Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Aung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint and officials, arrived at the work site of Thanlwin Bridge Construction Project on Mawlamyine bank in Mawlamyine on 12 January.
They were welcomed there by officials and service personnel. In the briefing hall, in-charge of the site on Mawlamyine bank Deputy Superintending Engineer U Myo Chit and in-charge of the site on Mottama bank U Ohn Han reported to Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party on progress of construction work. Then, Division Engineer (Civil) of Myanma Railways U Tin Aye reported on construction of the approach railroad and the site chosen for construction of the new Mawlamyine Station. Maj-Gen. Maung Bo gave instructions on timely completion of construction work, work site safety and minimizing of loss and wastage.
Afterwards, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo inspected construction of the main bridge, the approach road on
Mawlamyine bank and the site chosen for construction of the new station. Thanlwin Bridge (Mawla-
myine) will be a 11,575-foot-long rail-cum-road facility. In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo and party arrived at Winphanon Dam in Mudon. In the briefing hall, Assistant Director U Soe Myint Tun of Construction Group-1 of the Irrigation Department reported on matters related to dams, irrigation
facilities and benefits of the project. Deputy Director-General U Khin Zaw of the Irrigation Department and officials gave supplementary reports. Then, Maj-Gen. Maung Bo gave instructions on irrigation of cultivated lands. Winphanon Dam, 178 feet high and 1,800 feet long, is a Zone Type Earth Dam. The dam was successfully opened on 26 May 2001. The dam is now irrigating over 4,500 acres of summer paddy and 5,000 acres of other crops.
(6) Maj-Gen. Ye Myint inspects regional development tasks in Kachin State
YANGON, 14 Jan. - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence met with departmental officials and members of the social organizations in Tanai Township at Hukaung Hall, Tanai, Kachin State, on 10 January afternoon. Also present were Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe and departmental officials, personnel of the social organizations and guests. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint spoke about regional development tasks of the government, development tasks for Kachin State and the need of departments to cooperate with local people. Commander Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe reported on development tasks of Tanai region, Chairman of Tanai Township Peace and Development Council U Phone Myint on cultural and construction work being carried out in Tanai Township. Maj- Gen. Ye Myint presented gifts for departmental employees to Township Chairman U Phone Myint. Brig- Gen. Maung Maung Swe presented K 100,000 for Tanai Township Union Solidarity and Development Association to Secretary of the association U Sai Hla.
In the evening, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, together with the commander and officials, inspected construction of Tanai Bridge, Tanai Township People's Hospital and Tanai Basic Education High School. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe gave instructions and attended to requirements. On 11 January afternoon, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, together with officials, left Tanaing for Hkamti by helicopter. They were welcomed by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen. Soe Naing and officials. In the afternoon, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint met with departmental officials, personnel of social organizations at the meeting hall of Hkamti District Peace and Development Council Office. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint gave instructions on betterment of transport, agriculture, livestock breeding, education and health. Chairman of Hkamti District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htin Aung Kyaw reported on regional development work for Hkamti District and Commander Brig-Gen. Soe Naing on rural development tasks in Sagaing Division.
Maj-Gen. Ye Myint gave instructions and attended to the requirements. In the evening, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint, together with officials, inspected the upgrading of Khanti Airfield and gave instructions. Later, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint proceeded to Training School for Development of National Youth from Border Areas. Officials reported on facts about the training school. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint gave instructions.
Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and Brig-Gen. Soe Naing presented gifts to the trainees. On 12 January morning, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint together with officials, paid homage to Sayadaw of the State Central Working Committee of Sangha Agga Maha Saddhama Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kesara at the monastery in Khanti. He offered alms to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. At 11:30 am, Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and officials left Khanti for Homalin by helicopter and met with departmental officials in the hall of Homalin Basic Education High School. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint elaborated on regional development tasks. Chairman of Homalin Township Peace and Development Council U Tin Aung reported on construction and agricultural work being carried out in the township. Commander Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe reported on development tasks being undertaken in the state.
Maj-Gen. Ye Myint fulfilled the requirements. Maj-Gen. and party helicoptered to Katha and met with departmental officials in Ayeyar Shweli Hall at 4 p.m. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint spoke on the occasion. Chairman of Katha District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myint Naing reported on agricultural and livestock breeding work of the district. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party proceeded to Bhamo by helicopter. He met departmental officials and members of social organizations at Basic Education High School No 3 in Bhamo at 5 am. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint stressed the important of cooperation in undertaking national development tasks. Chairman of Bhamo District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Swe reported on implementation of projects. Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe gave a supplementary report. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint attended to the needs.

instructions. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party met with departmental officials in Moemeik. Chairman of
Moemeik Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Lwin and Chairman of Mabein Township Peace and Development Council U Ba Swe reported on implementation of projects in respective townships, and Chairman of Kyaukme District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Kyi on regional development tasks of the district. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint gave instructions. Maj-Gen. Ye Myint and party arrived back here through Mandalay by air. Members of the Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Brig-Gen. Khin Aung Myint met with members of the war veterans organization in Khanti Township at the guest house of Khanti Station on 11 January afternoon. Brig-Gen. Khin Aung Myint spoke of the activities of the Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization.
(7) Minister inspects library and museum in Sittway
YANGON, 14 Jan. - Minister for Labour and for Culture U Tin Winn, accompanied by Director-General U Maung Maung Ohn of the Labour Department and Deputy Director-General U Aung Kyaing of the Department of Archaeology, arrived at Sittway Airport of Rakhine State, and gave necessary instructions after meeting with staff of the Rakhine State Labour Department. The minister, after inspecting Rakhine State Department of Cultural Institute and library works, met with the staff of the department and made a speech.
He said the cultural heritage in the museum and library is priceless as it is revealing the cultural
historical course. He also urged the staff to preserve the national cultural heritage and to prevent it from being damaged. At 7 p.m., the minister paid homage to the Lawka Nanda Zedi and Sakkyamuni Image in the precinct and studied the ancient manuscripts together with Deputy Director-General U Aung Kyaing.
YANGON, 14 Jan. - Under the supervision of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and with the assistance of the Ministry of Transport, the MV Doulos registered at GBA (Good Books for All) Organization based in Germany arrived at Nanthida Jetty on 7 January and organized its floating book fair. The vessel left here at 2 p.m. today and the officers and crew of the vessel were seen off at the jetty by Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen. Aye Myint Kyu and officials.
Prizes distributed to winners in Horticulture Show and Competition
YANGON, 14 Jan.-The 10th Yangon Mayor's Trophy Horticulture Show and Competition and prize distribution ceremony in commemoration of 54th Anniversary Independence Day were held at
Mindhamma Grounds in Mayangon Township this morning. Present were Leading Patrons of Myanmar Flouricul-turists Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt; Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Lt-Gen. Tin Oo; Daw Marlar Tint, wife of member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than; members of the Panel of Patrons Daw Kyu Kyu Win, Daw Myint Myint Aye, Daw Aye Aye and Daw Khin Khin; Chairman of Leading Committee for the Show and Competition YCDC member U Aung Soe and members and their wives, officials, competitors and flouriculturists. Then, officials inspected the competition. The prize presentation ceremony followed. Leading Patron of the association Daw Marlar Tint, wife of Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than, and members of Panel of Patrons presented prizes to the winners. The competition will be kept open up to 15 February. The orchid and horticulture competition will be held on 28 January, and the local and foreign orchid competition on 11 February.
(9) Armed Forces Day Military Band Contest continues
YANGON, 14 Jan. - The fourth day of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative 11th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Contest was held at the People's Square here this morning. Bands comprising students from Botahtaung BEHS-4 and BEHS-6 presented skill
demonstrations. Then, bands representing No-66 Light Infantry Division, No-9 Operations Control
Command, No-11 LID, Defence Services Army Officers Training School, Combat Training School
(Army) (Bahtoo) and Yangon Command took part in the contest. Chairman of Committee for Observance of the contest Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo accepted K 80,000 donated by Dagon Tin Win and Daw Mya Yi Nanda of Dagon-Myanmar International Co Ltd and presented certificate of honour to them and cash awards to leaders of the student bands. Present were Senior military officers, members of the Panel of Judges, guests, Tatmadawmen and their families, teachers and students.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the Matriculation or equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the requirements or not.
ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONForeign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country of their residence, or at the examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers, namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001. The written entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate who passes the written examination must sit for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is liberal and flexible enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students. The students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.
VISA & OTHER EXPENSES
Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding and messing for foreign students will be provided free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
