(1) Eighteen million members of the USDA need to support and participate in national and rural development tasks

Chin State USDA holds mass rally

YANGON, 13 Jan.- A mass rally to support national and rural development tasks organized by Chin State  Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at Vamthu Maung sports grounds in Haka,  Chin State, on 10 January. The mass rally was attended by members of Chin State Union Solidarity and  Development Association totalling 5,450. Chin State USDA Executive U Nay Hti Yo presided over the  mass rally together with Secretary of Falam District USDA U Larl Tin Mann and Secretary of Mindat  Township USDA U Ngun Than Aung. Member of Haka Township USDA Daw Ngun Zar Htwe and  member of Haka Township USDA Daw Sai Thang Hmon acted as master and co-master of  ceremonies.

Chairman of the rally Executive of Chin State USDA U Nay Hti Yo extended greetings to those present  at the rally. He said the USDA is a national organization formed with sons and daughters of the people  to serve the interest of the State and the people. Therefore, members of the USDA are actively  participating in national and rural development tasks. He spoke of the need for all members of the  USDA to follow the guidance of Patron of the USDA Senior General Than Shwe in all seriousness.

The government is implementing national development tasks for raising the living standard of the people  and for emergence of a new, peaceful, modern developed nation. Altogether 18 million members of the  USDA need to support the tasks and to actively participate in them as a national duty. Rural development tasks laid down by the government are the basis of the economy of the State. They are  being implemented for development of agriculture and improvement of the living standard of the people  in rural regions.

All the USDA members are to support these noble tasks. He urged members of the USDA to maintain  peace and tranquillity and to participate in nation-building endeavours and rural development tasks  regarding them as national tasks. Executive of Falam Township USDA Daw Nel Kyone tabled a motion  calling for support of nation-building tasks of the government. The development of the agriculture sector,  on which over 70 per cent of the population relies is the vital for the progress of other sectors of the  economy.

Therefore, Laibar Dam that can irrigate 500 acres of lands and generate 600 kilowatts was built and 52  projects for availability of water were undertaken. Sown acreage has increased from 1.6 million up to  2.05 million. Seeds of tea plants were distributed free to farmers so that Chin State will become a  tea-producing state spending a large sum of money. In the transport sector, 340-foot-long Ver Bridge  across Manipur River was built in Chin State. Mann Swan Suspension Bridge and Twe Thang Bridge,  320 feet long each, are under construction.

For ensuring smooth transport, new rural roads, namely, Haimwar road, Lailinpi road, Wongthu road,  Sabaungthe road, Lonleh road, Ngaphaipi road, Darkhaing road and Mindat-Kanpetlet road were built.  Twenty-six hydel plants including Laibar hydroelectric plant, Nang Laung, Chichaung and Twe hsaung  power stations were constructed within a decade in Chin State. The major power projects like Yeywa  Hydroelectric Power Project, Bilin Hydroelectric Power Project and Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power  Project are being constructed in the country. Gas power stations and coal-fired power stations are also  being built.

In Chin State, six microwave stations, one auto-telephone exchange, one satellite communication
station, nine rural region communication stations, 73 post offices and 18 telegraph offices were opened.  Altogether 1,335 telephones were installed. Arrangements are being made for installation of a 500-line  auto-telephone exchange in Tiddim.

There are 25 high schools, 82 middle schools, 1,058 primary schools in Chin State. In addition, six high  school branches, one affiliated high school, 13 middle school branches and 48 affiliated middle schools  were also opened. Executive of Thanglang Township USDA U Ha Ye Lein seconded the motion tabled  by Daw Nel Kyone. He said Daw Nel Kyone reported that tasks for economic infrastructures were  undertaken with added momentum as success was achieved in restoring national solidarity and peace  and stability in the country. The government has attached importance to the agriculture sector spending a  large sum of money.

As a result, people have sufficient food and no longer have to worry about it. For rice sufficiency,  38,000 acres of land were extended, replacing the conventional shifting cultivation method with the  modern hillside cultivation method. Chin State produced 3.9 million baskets of paddy. If Chin State  becomes a tea-producing state, tea-related industries will emerge. In the transport sector, 98 miles of tar  roads, 252 miles of gravel roads and 701 miles of earth roads totalling 1,060 miles of roads were built.

The 110-foot-long suspension bridge and 170-foot-long bailey bridge were constructed in Redkhawdar  village with the aim of developing border trade with neighbouring India. Plans are under way for  emergence of a modern, developed nation and development of human resources.

In Chin State, there are five e-learning centres and 14 multimedia teaching centres. Computer diploma  courses were conducted twice. In the energy sector, small generators were installed in Thantlang and  Mindat Townships. In Haka, the 50-bed hospital was upgraded into a 200-bed one. There are 21  hospitals, 67 rural health care centres and 237 sub-rural health care centres in Chin State. Secretary of  Tiddim Township USDA U Kham Hswim Mon tabled the motion calling for participation of USDA  members in rural development tasks.

He said that the government formed road construction special groups and is carrying out repairs of
Kalay-Falam-Haka Road, Mandalay-Monywa-Pale-Gangaw-Haka Road, Haka-Rizwa-Matupi Road  and Matupi-Mindat Road with added momentum due to  difficulties in the transportation sector in Chin  State. Mindat-Kanpalet Road has been constructed. The axis of Matupi-Paletwa Road has been found.  New rural roads the 20 miles long Twikhiyan-Durkhai motor road and the 40 miles long  Wongthu-Ngaphaipee motor road  were constructed.

The walkways were upgraded into the roads for jeeps. A total of 222 roads, 283 miles long, were
constructed at a cost of K 62.8822 million and 308 bridges built at a cost of K 28.215 million in Chin  State within a decade. Regarding the availability of drinking water and water supply for agriculture  work, though the drinking water was carried from streams with the use of gutters to villages of Chin  State in the past, the government has now spent K 17.193 million for supplying clean water to 114  villages with the use of pipelines and water tanks.

Moreover, the government carried out tasks of water supply in cooperation with other organizations for  more 65 villages. After 1988, a total of 17 water supply tasks have been undertaken at a cost of K  19.118 million and irrigated 3,381 acres of cultivated lands. In conclusion, the government has spent K  18.196 million and local authorities K 2.257 million in distribution of 23,671 baskets of tea seeds to the  tea growers free of charge and so far, 1,003 acres of lands have been put under tea in accord with the  aim Chin State must be Tea State.

Arrangements are being made to plant 7,654,303 tea saplings in coming the month of June. Afterwards,  Haka Township USDA executive Daw Ngun Din seconded the motion tabled by Secretary of Tiddim  Township USDA U Kham Hswim Mon calling for participation of USDA members in rural  development tasks.

As there are thick forest and so many creeks in Chin State, local people faced communications
difficulties between rural and urban areas. A total of 222 rural roads, 283 miles long, were upgraded  and it can be seen that 308 bridges were built. And the supply of drinking water tasks were undertaken  at 114 villages. Regarding development of agriculture and livestock breeding tasks which are the main  business of rural area, a total of 25,237 acre of terrace lands were reclaimed and the 2,537 acres of  lands were reclaimed with the use of modern hillside cultivation method.

In the livestock breeding sector, 50,000 fingerlings were distributed to fish breeders free of charge. Due  to giving encouragement to breed silkworm, local farmers earned surplus income in producing over  22,000 cocoons in 2000-2001 fiscal year. She heartily supported that under the arrangements of  education promotion programme in Chin State, multimedia teaching centres were inaugurated at seven  Basic Education High Schools out of 25. Moreover, 1,165 basic education schools were opened in  villages and new 74 schools were also opened. In the health care services, 318 hospitals and  dispensaries including station hospitals were commissioned. Then, the mass rally passed the resolutions  in support of the State's development tasks, rural development tasks laid down by the State and  participation of USDA members in national and rural development tasks. Later, the rally came to an end  by chanting the slogans.
   


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening of multi-media teaching centre in Gangaw township and  inspects regional development tasks

YANGON, 13 Jan-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt
accompanied by the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), the deputy ministers, Chairman of Magway  Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min, officials of the State Peace and Development  Council Office, departmental heads and officials yesterday morning left Magway by helicopter. They  arrived at Kyaukhtu village in Saw township, Gangaw District at 9 am.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Deputy Commander of North-West Command  Brig-Gen. Soe Myint, the chairman of Saw Township Peace and Development Council and members,  service personnel and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association. Chairman of  Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin  Nyunt and party proceeded to Kyaukhtu Basic Education High School where they were welcomed by  Magway Division Education Officer U Hla Aung, Headmaster U Than Tun, teachers, students, dance  troupes and the school band. First, the Secretary-1 inspected computer skill room, language lab and  audio visual room and training of student.

Then, the Secretary-1 met with members of Saw Township Peace and Development Council, service  personnel, members of USDA, the headmaster and teachers at the school assembly hall. First,  Chairman of Saw Township Peace and Development Council U Aung Myint, the township engineer of  Public Works and towns elders reported to the Secretary-1 on sown acreage in the township, cultivation  of monsoon paddy and summer paddy, rice sufficiency, construction of roads and bridges and  endeavours made for education and health. Then, the Secretary-1 fulfilled the requirements. Giving  necessary instructions the Secretary-1 said. He and the ministers, and departmental heads came to the  region to fulfil the requirements of regional development, education and health in Yaw region including  Saw, Htilin and Gangaw Townships. As transportation is the most fundamental requirement for regional  development, departmental officials need to carry out tasks systematically.

The government is building infrastructure for regional development all across the country, plans are to  be made step by step aiming at the most fruitful outcome for respective regions. Head of State Senior  General Than Shwe has laid down five tasks for development of rural areas including betterment of  transportation between villages and towns. As transportation becomes smooth, progress will be made in  water supply, education, health and economy in rural areas. The government is implementing  development tasks all over the country including rural areas. Objectives will be realized quickly if local  people participate in implementation of the task on manageable scale. Making concerted efforts for  development of own region is a tradition of Myanmar.

Therefore, local people need to help maintain roads and bridges constructed by the government. He  also urged local people to make efforts for development of their own economy, agriculture and livestock  breeding for the development of economy of the State through regional development. At a time when  the government is striving for uplift of education and health, local people need to help their own children  become developed all-round. They are to make concerted efforts for uplift of health standard and  making environment clean in accord with health standard. In conclusion, he urged the officials to make  collaborative efforts for regional development and uplift of socio-economic life of local people. Then, the  Secretary-1 presented computers, television sets, a video-cassette player, a cassette player, a generator  and teaching aids for the multimedia teaching centre of Kyaukhtu Basic Education High School to  Headmaster U Than Tun.

Later, Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt went to Kyaukhtu Station People's Hospital. They were welcomed by  Medical Superintendent Dr Kyi Kyi Mar and staff and members of Maternal and Child Welfare  Association. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 inspected the wards, the laboratory, the medicines stored and  the operation theatre.

The Secretary-1 presented medicines for the hospital to Dr  Kyi Kyi Mar. Next, the Secretary-1 cordially met with  executives and members of Saw Township and Kyaukhtu  Village Union Solidarity and Development Associations.  Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Htilin in Yaw  region, Gangaw District. They were welcomed by Tactical  Operations Commander Col Hla Ngwe and officials. The  Secretary-1 attended the opening ceremony of the  multimedia teaching centre at the basic education high school  in Htilin, Gangaw District, Magway Division, on 12 January  morning.

Also present were the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), the deputy ministers, Deputy Commander of  North-West Command Brig-Gen. Soe Myint, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development  Council Col Zaw Min, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of  department, division, district and township authorities, departmental officials, members of USDA, Red  Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, officials of No 2 Basic  Education Department, the township education officer and the headmasters, members of the school  board of trustees and the parent-teacher association, wellwishers, Headmistress Daw Htay Hlaing and  teachers, students, a dance troupe and band and pompom troupes. Headmistress Daw Htay Hlaing and  Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Win Myint formally opened the multimedia teaching  centre.

The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the multimedia teaching centre. Then, the  Secretary-1 and party inspected the language lab, the computer skills room, the computer-aided  instruction room, the audio-visual room and the printed media room, and the skill demonstration of the  students. Later, the Secretary-1 inspected the domestic science room and the painting room. The  students presented gifts to the Secretary-1.

A ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre of Htilin BEHS was held at the hall  of the school. Headmistress Daw Htay Hlaing and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Win  Myint reported on efforts for the opening of the multimedia teaching centre and matters related to  teaching aids. Chairman of Htilin Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Thu reported on   water supply in Htilin Township, condition of rice and edible oil consumption, repairs of Htilin-Pauk   Road and water supply in the town. Next, the Secretary-1 said that the government is trying to open   multimedia teaching centre at basic education high schools and middle schools in all the regions of the   Union with the aim of bridging the gap of education between urban and rural areas.

In the past, the nation was not in stable condition, and it had been due to the different ideologies and  suspicion of national races born in the Union. As a result, the nation lagged behind in development.
Therefore, in the time of the present government, efforts have been made to restore national solidarity.  The government has continued to work for the maintenance of stability and peace and tranquillity,   development of the nation and improvement of living standard of the people. The government is taking   measures for the harmonious development of all the regions, and the national people have to participate   in the task. Consequently, all the regions of the Union are developing gradually.

Today, a multimedia teaching centre has been opened in the basic education high school in Htilin as in  other schools. It is aimed at developing human resources. A railroad has been built from Monywa and  Pakokku up to Gangaw and Kalay through Pondaung-Ponnya region. Now travelling can be made  along that route. With the improvement of transport, the flow of commodity has become swift and easy,  and the development of the region will soon gain momentum.

Due to the efforts of the government and participation of national people, the nation is making progress  to an extent, and continued efforts need to be made to accelerate the rate of development. If the  government and the people make concerted efforts, the goal of the nation will be achieved in the near  future. Then, the Secretary-1 presented teaching aid video tapes to Headmistress Daw Htay Hlaing.  After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 posed for documentary photo with members of School Board of  Trustees, the headmistress, teachers and students.

On their arrival in Gangaw, Yaw region, they were welcomed by Officiating Tactical Operations
Commander Lt-Col Win Naing, district and township authorities, members of USDA, Red Cross and  Auxiliary Fire Brigades, MCWA, the Committee for Women's Affairs and local people.

Afterwards, a ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre was held at Gangaw BEHS at 2.30 p.m.  Present were Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt and party,  Deputy Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen. Soe Myint, Chairman of Magway Division  Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min, district and township authorities, departmental  personnel, members of USDA, MCWA and the Committee for Women's Affairs, officials of No 2  Basic Education Department, members of SBT and the Parent-Teacher Association, Headmistress Daw  Thaung Thaung, teachers, students and dance troupes.

Headmistress Daw Thaung Thaung and SBT member U Than Tun formally opened the multimedia
teaching centre. Then, the Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard of the centre. Afterwards, the Secretary-1  and party inspected the altar room, the computer skills room, the language lab, the computer aided  instruction room, the audio visual room and the printed media room. Next, they inspected the domestic  science room, the painting room and the handicraft room.

The students presented the souvenir to the Secretary-1. The Secretary-1 and party watched the musical  presentation of the students. Then, the opening of multimedia teaching centre of Gangaw BEHS was  held at the hall. On behalf of all students, Tenth standard student Maung Aung Aung spoke words of  thanks. Headmistress Daw Thaung Thaung and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Bo Htwe  reported on efforts made for emergence of the multimedia teaching centre and installation of teaching aid  at the centre. Chairman of Gangaw District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htay Oo reported  on climatic condition of the district, cultivated lands, education and health tasks, water supply system for  urban and rural areas and transportation matters. Then, the Secretary-1 gave instructions and made a  speech.

He said Gangaw lies at the northern edge of Magway Division and is a gateway to Chin State. So, it can  be seen that the development of Gangaw will assist the development of Chin State. He said that he came  there to attend the opening of multimedia teaching centres of the basic education high schools of  Gangaw and Htilin and to attend to the requirements of the Yaw region including Gangaw. Measures  being taken to narrow the gap between the urban and rural areas in education sector are beneficial to  the students in rural and border areas where transportation is difficult because it can lead to equal  opportunities in education.

Moreover, universities, degree colleges and colleges are extended in cities in states and divisions for  higher learning and now students from Saw, Htilin and Gangaw in Yaw region do not need to go to  Yangon and Mandalay for their education, they can pursue higher education in Pakokku, Magway and  Monywa. Head of State Senior General Than Shwe always gives guidance on promoting of education  and health care services and construction of roads, bridges and dams for region-wise development, he  said. According to the guidance of Head of State, Monywa-Pakokku-Gangaw-Kalay railroad is being  constructed using a large amount of money for the development of Chin State and Yaw region. One tunnel railroad and one mountain railroad are being constructed at Pondaung-Ponnya mountain ranges at  the same time, he added.

As the government is like the parent of the people living in the State, with parent-like affection to
children, it always attends to promotion of living standard and economy of the people regardless of
national, religion and social class. He urged all the citizens to understand the goodwill of the government  and to discharge their own responsibilities, and to promote their own business and to strive for the  development of the State. Local authorities, departmental and local people are to unitedly cooperate for  the success of regional development tasks carried out by the State for promotion of economic and social  standard of the public, he pointed out.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 presented teaching aids relating to the subjects for Gangaw BEHS to
Headmistress Daw Thaung Thaung and the ceremony came to a close. After the ceremony, the  Secretary-1 and party together with members of School Board of Trustees, teachers and students  posed for documentary photos. The Secretary-1 and members then paid homage to the Buddha image  at Gangaw Sasana Beikmandaw.

Officials reported on condition of donations for the Beikmandaw, construction tasks to the Secretary-1  who attended to the needs. Then, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at Monywa in Sagaing Division  where they were welcomed by members of division/district/village Peace and Development Councils,  departmental officials and members of USDA. They took brief rest there. The Secretary-1 and party  inspected construction of Chindwin Bridge (Monywa) and Monywa-Kalaywa Road, and arrived back  here this evening.


(3) Minister receives Japanese guest

YANGON, 13 Jan. - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha received  member of the House of Councillors of Japan Mr Hideo Watanabe at his office of the Ministers' Office  at 2 p.m. today. Also present at the call were officials of the Ministry.

Oral polio vaccines given to children

YANGON, 13 Jan. - The oral polio vaccine-giving team for the Seventh Year National Immunization  Days  (second time) led by National Health Committee Chairman State Peace and Development Council   Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt's wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, accompanied by Deputy Minister for   Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, the members of the panel of honourary Patrons of Yangon Division   Maternal and Child Welfare Association wife of Maj-Gen. Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence   Daw Malar Tint, wife of Brig-Gen. Myint Swe of Yangon Command Commander Daw Khin Thet Htay,   wife of the minister for Health Daw Yin Yin Myint, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association   Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Myanmar National Committee for Women Affairs  Vice- Chairperson Dr Daw May May Yi, wife of Brig-Gen. Mya Thein Han of the Office of Director of  Medical  Services, Ministry of Defence, wife of the director-general of the Health Planning Department,  wife of the
director-general of the Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar), officials and  USDA Executive U Min Thein, arrived at No 1 Basic Education High School in Dagon Township.  They were welcomed there by Dagon Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Soe Min  and members, Township Health Department Head Dr Daw Ohnma Thwin and staff, Dagon Township  BEHS-1 Headmaster U Kyaw Kyaw and teachers, Township Women Affairs Committee members,  Township USDA Secretary U Khin Hlaing Tun and members and students. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe  and party were entertained with dance by children at the Dagon Thiri Hall where vaccines would be  given. Dr Daw Ohnma Thwin reported matters on giving vaccines to children in the township.

Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party fed the vaccines and Vitamin (A) tablets to children and
presented toys to them. The team proceeded to Ahlon Hall at the corner of Hninsi and Ayeyawady  Roads in Ahlon Township. First, Ahlon Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Aung  Khin extended greetings.

Township Health Department Head Dr Lay Nu Aung explained matters on giving polio vaccines. Then,  Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party gave the vaccines and vitamin (A) tablets to children and gave toys  to them. Thence, the team went to No 1 BEHS in Kyimyindine Township. Township Health Department  Head Dr Than Than Nwe explained matters on giving polio vaccines. Then, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe  and party fed the vaccines and vitamin (A) tablets to children and gave toys to them. More than 2,000  children under five were given the polio vaccines at 12 venues in Dagon Township, more than 4,000  children under five at 22 venues in Ahlon Township and some 6,000 children under five at 32 venues in  Kyimyindine Township.


(4) Commander, Minister inspect regional development and agricultural tasks

YANGON, 13 Jan.- Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Yangon Command Brig-Gen. Myint Swe and Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National  Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by Director-General Col Myo Myint of  Development Affairs Department, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council  Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and officials, inspected regional development and agriculture tasks in Kyauktan,  Thongwa and Kayan Townships this morning.

At 7.30 am, the commander and the minister gave oral polio vaccine to under-5 children at the jetty of  Kyaikhmawwun yayle pagoda in Kyauktan. Then, they attended the opening ceremony of rural laterite  road linking Zweba Kondan village and Mayanbay village in Kyauktan Township. At the ceremony,  Executive Officer of Kyauktan Township Development Affairs Department U Myint Aung reported on  matters related to the new laterite road. Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council Chairman  U Lu Maw and Township USDA Secretary U Hla Win spoke words of thanks.

Then, officials presented commemorative pennants to the guests and formally opened the road. The
commander, the minister and party inspected the road. The rural laterite road, 57 miles long and 12 feet  wide, was constructed at a cost of K 200.8 million by the State. Therefore, local people of 13  village-tracts can now use the road. The Irrigation Department built a new embankment near the  seashore. By doing so, it prevents a total of 10,660 acres of farmlands from flow of salty water and  5,083 acres were reclaimed for prawn breeding. The commander, the minister and party attended the  upgrading ceremony of the rural lake and handing over of hand-pump in Zweba Kondan village. They  then gave OPV to under-5 children at the village health care unit. Afterwards, the commander, the  minister and party met local people and attended to their needs.




(5) Maj-Gen. Ye Myint meets with departmental officials in Myitkyina

YANGON, 13 Jan.- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen. Ye Myint of the  Ministry of Defence met with departmental officials in the town hall of Myitkyina on 10 January morning.  Also present were Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern  Command Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe, departmental officials and personnel of social organizations.

Maj-Gen. Ye Myint said that the government is extending agriculture by implementing short- and  long-term plans. Measures are being taken to achieve sufficiency of rice region-wise and to cultivate  crops and perennial crops at places where paddy cannot be grown. Efforts are also being made for the  development of transport, education and health in rural areas. Therefore, departments need to  cooperate with one another and join hands with the people in implementing plans.

Then, Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Swe reported on development tasks being undertaken in Kachin State.  Maj-Gen. Ye Myint attended to the requirements. Member of the Organizing Committee of Myanmar  War Veterans Organization Brig-Gen. Khin Aung Myint met with members of Myitkyina District War  Veterans Supervisory Committee and members of Township Organizing Committee in Malikha Hall of  Myitkyina on 11 January morning. He elaborated on the five tasks being undertaken by the Central  Organizing Committee of MWVO and seven future tasks, and gave instructions.


(6) Rural area development tasks inspected

YANGON, 13 Jan.-Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development  Association Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone arrived at Bawsai Village in Kalaw Township, Shan State (South) and  met with secretaries, executives, organizers and members of USDA at the hall of Bawsai Affiliated Basic  Education High School this morning. The CEC member made discussions on objectives, future plans  and rules and regulations of the association and regional development tasks. He then greeted those who  are constructing the Ywahaung-Bawsai-Yephyu-kan earthen road and attended to the needs. In the  evening, he accepted 970 membership applications at the hall of Taung-pawgyi Affiliated High School in  Pindaya Township and discussed matters related to rural area development tasks. At night, he met with  executives of State USDA, secretaries of township USDAs and executives at Pindaya USDA office and  made a speech.
 


(7) Rural bridge opened

YANGON, 13 Jan. - Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development  Association U Pan Aung, accompanied by officials, arrived at Kandawmingala Youth Development  Parahita Geha of DaikU on 11 January. He paid obeisance to Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Maha  Saddamma-jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kalyana and donated K 250,000 to the fund of the Geha. Then,  CEC member U Pan Aung attended the opening ceremony of a bridge of Shwekyin and Southern  Village. The bridge is 395-ft long and 10-ft wide and was constructed under the programme of national  development and rural development tasks. The bridge will help many villages nearby have easy access  to each other.

Armed Forces Day Military Band Contest continues

YANGON, 13 Jan. -The third day of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative 11th  Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Contest held at the People's Square here this morning.  Before the contest, the bands comprising students from No 2 Basic Education High School, Yankin and  Yankin Township Practising Middle School presented their skill demonstrations. Then, the bands  representing Defence Services Medical Academy, North-West Command, Southern Command,  Central Command, Triangle Region Command and Northern Command took part in the contest.  Chairman of Committee for Holding of the contest Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo and  senior military officers presented gifts to the leaders of school bands. Among the spectators were  members of Panel of Judges, invited guests, Tatmadawmen and their families, teachers and students.


(8)  Luxury cruise liner arrive

YANGON, 13 Jan. - Under the supervision of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and with the
sponsorship  of the Ministry of Transport, the luxury cruise liner Seabourn Spirit, arranged by Insight Myanmar  Tourism Co Ltd, entered Bo Aung Kyaw Jetty, Yangon this evening with 123 tourists on board. They  were welcomed by officials from the respective ministries and officials from Insight Myanmar Tourism  Co Ltd. The tourists will visit around Yangon in the evening; Yangon and Bagan in two groups on 14  January; and Yangon on 15 January morning and will leave here from Bo Aung Kyaw Jetty on that day.


(9)  OPV given to children at Ayeyawady Naval Region Command, Mingaladon Air Base, Yangon Command, SID

YANGON, 13 Jan. -The oral polio vaccine giving ceremony of second round of the Seventh Year
National  Immunization Days, organized by Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Maternal and Child Welfare  Association and Botahtaung Township Health Department, was held at the Officers' Yeiktha of the  headquarters this morning. Present were Daw Aye Aye, wife of Commander-in-Chief (Navy)  Vice-Admiral Kyi Min, wife of Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Soe Thein, officials and their wives  and Tatmadaw families.

Then OPV was given to 324 children under five from staff quarters of the command and surrounding  wards. Similarly, the ceremony to given OPV to Children was held at Mingaladon Air Base MCWA  Office this morning. Daw Mary Tin, wife of Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen. Myint Swe, Daw  Htwe Htwe Nyunt, wife of Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myat Hein attended the ceremony and Base  Commander of Mingaladon Air Base Headquarters Brig-Gen. Thein Myint and senior officials, MCWA  Chairperson of the Air Base Daw Myint Myint Yi and members gave oral polio vaccines to 230  children under-five. Similar ceremony was also held at Maintenance Air base MCWA office this  morning. Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen. Myint Swe's wife Daw Mary Tin and party attended  the ceremony and gave OPV to 145 children under-five. Likewise, a similar ceremony took place at  Defence Services Records Office at 7 am today.

MCWA Chairperson of the Office Dr Daw Thi Thi Aye and Executive Committee members, health staff  and Red Cross Brigade members gave OPV to 407 children under-five. The Yangon Command also  held OPV-giving ceremony at pre-primary school of the Command this morning. Patron of Yangon  Division MCWA Supervision Committee Daw Khin Thet Htay, the Deputy Commander's wife Daw  Khin Ma Lay and party gave OPV to 168 children. Similar ceremonies were held this morning at  Myawady Yeiktha and Nawaday Yeiktha. Camp Commandant of the Ministry of defence Brig-Gen. Hla  Aung Thein and wife, MCWA Chairperson Daw Amy Khine and party gave OPV and vitamin (A)  tablets to 630 children. MWCA of the Special Investigation Department of Myanmar Police Force held  a similar ceremony this morning at Aungthapyay Police Yeiktha on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road,  Mayangon Township. SID Police Col Khin Maung Lat and officers, Chairperson of MWCA of SID  Daw Khin Hla Myint and members, health staff attended the ceremony. OPV was given to 72 children.


INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION

International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University will open in June for 2002 academic year. The first semester for academic year 2002 begins in June and ends in October. The second semester begin on  1st December and ends in March 2003. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Foreign monks, nuns and laymen who apply for one-year Diploma course must have passed at least the  Matriculation or  equivalent. For the layman who is Myanmar citizen must have their first degree, B.A. or  B.Sc. Myanmar monks and nuns who apply for  Diploma course must not be younger than 18 and not  older than 45. Age limit for students who apply for one-year Diploma course only will be given consideration. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether a particular applicant has met the  requirements or not.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Foreign candidates are required to sit for the written examination at the Embassy of Myanmar in country  of their residence, or at the  examination centre in Yangon, Myanmar. There will be two question papers,  namely, one on English proficiency and the other on general Knowledge relevant to Buddhism. The  closing date for submitting application form for Diploma course is 15th December 2001.  The written  entrance examination for Diploma course will be held on 8th January 2002. A candidate  who passes the  written examination must sit  for personal interview at the Embassy of Myanmar in the country of their  residence before joining the University. The admission policy of the University is  liberal and flexible  enough to get the qualified students for Diploma course. Priority will be givento foreign students.  The  students who joins the University is required to bring a proper medical certificate recently taken from any  recognized authority showing physical and mental fitness.

VISA & OTHER EXPENSES

Once a foreign student is admitted to the Diploma course, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will take care  of visa application and its extension. Tuition, boarding  and messing for foreign students will be provided  free by the University. Travelling expenses for joining the University will not be borne by the University.
