(1) Secretary-1 inspects construction of new runway of Magway Airport and Ayeyawady  Bridge (Magway)

YANGON, 12 Jan-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen.. Khin Nyunt,  accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and  Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials, left here for Magway yesterday evening  and arrived in Magway at 4.30 p.m.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed at Magway Airport by Chairman of Mandalay Division  Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen. Ye Myint, Chairman of  Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min, members of Division and District  Peace and Development Councils, service personnel and members of the Union Solidarity and  Development Association.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to the new runway project site of Magway Airport near  Sartaingkan village in Magway township. First, they inspected earth work of the runway done with the  use of heavy machinery. Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing reported to the Secretary-1 on  progress of work. Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected construction work along the runway by  car. Afterwards, they inspected installation of a concrete mixer to be used in the construction work.

At the briefing hall, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen. Hla Myint Swe and Director-General U Win
Maung of the Department of Civil Aviation reported to the Secretary-1 on facts about the project.  Then, Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing reported to the Secretary-1 on earth work of the  12,000-foot-long and 200-foot-wide runway, arrangements to lay concrete on the runway after earth  work is completed and architectural design of the airport building.

Maj-Gen. Hla Myint Swe gave a supplementary report. Then, the Secretary-1 gave necessary
instructions. He said that tasks are being carried out for development of Magway city, which is situated  in the strategic western part of Bago Yoma. In this regard, construction of the airport is important.  Efforts are to be made for timely completion of the airport, to meet the set standards so that big aircraft  can touch down at the airport.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to the construction project of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) on  the bank of Magway. They were welcomed by Deputy Chief Engineer (Project) U Han Zaw and  employees. First, the Secretary-1 inspected installation of steel trusses at the project site. Deputy  Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and Deputy Chief Engineer (Project) of Public Works U Han  Zaw reported on construction of the approach bridge of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) on Magway  bank and the finding of an axis, construction of the approach bridge on Minbu bank and the finding of an  axis, construction of the approach road, construction of piles, installation of trusses, measures taken for  road safety and prevention of traffic congestion and future tasks. The Secretary-1 said Magway is an  important region in central Myanmar and Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) is also a strategic bridge.

The bridge across the Ayeyawady River links Magway and Minbu. On completion of the bridge, it will  link the eastern and western regions of the Ayeyawady River and it will provide access to Rakhine State  through Minbu-An road. One can travel from the western regions of the river via Magway to  Taungdwingyi, Pyinmana, Paunglaung and Shan State in the east. Travelling to northern Shan State,  border areas, Kachin State and Sagaing Division through Mandalay will be easy and smooth. Head of  State Senior General Than Shwe himself gave guidance on the tasks of Magway region development  including Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway), a new airport, the Institute of Medicine and Primary Health  Institute, as Magway takes up a strategic place.

Under the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, a modern airport is under  construction.  Moreover, the Institute of Medicine (Magway) and the Primary Health Institute have been  constructed in  the health sector. Plans are under way for construction of a new Magway General  Hospital. He said there  are Magway University, Education College, Government Technical College and  Government Computer  College. Therefore, Magway can be called a city of education.  He called on all to exert efforts to enable  Magway to possess the characteristics of a city and to build a  modern Magway bridge with high standard,  one of the main projects for development of the region. The  Secretary-1 inspected measures taken for  prevention of traffic congestion at the junction at the top of  the approach road of the Ayeya-wady Bridge  (Magway). The Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) links  Mingala Road in Magway and Phayakoehsugon in
Htauk-sharbin Village in Minbu Township. The  bridge is 8,989 feet long and 28 feet wide. It has two six-foot-wide walkways and can withstand 60  tons of loads. The lower structure will be built of reinforced concrete. The 6,969-foot-long main bridge  will be built of steel trusses and the 2,020-foot-long approach bridge of pre-stressed concrete.


(2) USDA members need to participate in nation-building endeavours and pay constant  attention to rural development tasks

Magway Division USDA holds mass rally 

YANGON, 12 Jan. - A mass rally to support national and rural development tasks organized by Magway  Division Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at the sports ground of Kanbya  Village in Magway Township, Magway District, Magway Division yesterday morning. It was attended  by Magway District Column, led by U Kyaw Moe, comprising 4,051 members of Magway,  Yenangyoung, Chauk, Taung-dwingyi, Natmauk and Myothit Township USDAs, Thayet District  Column, led by U Kyi Min, comprising 4,003 members of Thayet, Aunglan, Minhla, Kanma,  Sinbaungwe and Mindon Township USDAs, Gangaw District Column, led by U Aung Min, comprising  4,092 members of Gangaw, Saw, and Htilin Township USDAs and Minbu District Column, led by U  Ko Lay, comprising 4,001 members of Minbu, Pwintbyu, Salin, Ngaphe, Setoktara Township USDAs,  Pakokku District Column, led by U Kyaw Tint, comprising 4,056 members of Pakokku, Yesagyo,  Myaing, Pauk and Seikphyu Township USDAs, totalling 20,203.

Magway Division USDA Executive U Than Swe presided over the mass rally together with Pakokku  District USDA Executive U Lu Min and Taungdwingyi Township USDA Secretary U Than Win. Thayet  District USDA Executive Daw Yin Yin Hla and Magway District USDA Executive Daw Sandar Lun  Myint acted as master and co-master of ceremonies. Chairman of the rally Executive of Magway  Division USDA U Than Swe said that the Union Solidarity and Development Association has been  formed with the sons and daughters of the people with the aim of serving the national interests.  Therefore, all the members of the association are actively participating in the national and rural  development tasks.

After 1988, the government and the people have been cooperating in efforts for the development of the  State. The government is energetically implementing the tasks with respect to national solidarity and  peace and tranquillity, development of economic infrastructures, enhancement of economic efficiency,  development of human resources, improvement of social skills and regional and international  cooperation.

These tasks have been formulated in accord with the political, economic and social objectives. They are  strategies laid down in accord with the objective conditions of the nation. The USDA needs to regard  the nation-building tasks of the government as a national tasks and to help maintain peace and stability  and undertake nation-building tasks and to pay constant attention to rural development tasks. Executive  of Taung-dwingyi Township USDA U Ye Tint Thein tabled a motion calling for support of  nation-building tasks of the government. In the economic sector, over 13 million tons of paddy were  produced in 1988, and over 21 million tons in 2001.

Formerly, about 400,000 tons of peas and beans were produced, and now up to two million tons have  been produced. The production of oil crops has increased from over 0.7 million tons up to 1.2 million  tons. The production has increased from 60,000 tons of cotton up to 200,000 tons. The production of  sugarcane has trebled from two million tons of sugarcane up to six million tons. In the meat and fish  sector, over 0.9 tons of meat, fish and prawn were produced in 1988, and about 1.7 million tons in  2001.

In the energy sector, the production of natural gas has increased from over 39 billion cubic-feet up to  301 billion cubic-feet. In the mineral sector, the production of gold, refined copper and pig iron has  increased considerably. In the foreign trade sector, the value of the previous trade volume was over US  $ 880 million and now it has amounted to over US $ 4,100 million. Arrangements are being made to  generate electricity, which is very important in developing the industrial sector. Over the last ten years,  26 hydroelectric power plants were built, and the major power projects like Yeywa Hydroelectric  power Project and Paung-laung Hydroelectric power Project.

In addition, gas power stations and coal-fired power stations are also being built. In the communication  sector, modern communication facilities have been installed. In 1988, there were 83 microwave stations;  in 2001, 198 microwave stations. The number of telephone exchanges has increased from 239 to 543.  Previously, there were over 6,600 auto tele-phones, and now there are over 300,000. The number of  modern cellular phones has increased as well. In 1988, there were only 32 universities and colleges. In  2001, the number increased up to 144. Post-graduate and doctorate courses are being opened. In this  way, highly-qualified human resources are being developed.

In 1988, there were 0.13 million university students. In 2001, over 0.53 million university students are  pursuing education. The government has conducted new universities, colleges and basic education  schools. In 1988, there were about 34,000 basic education schools. Now there are over 39,000.  Member of  Magway Township USDA Daw Thida Hlaing seconded the motion tabled by executive of  Taungdwingyi  Township USDA U Ye Tint Thein. She said n the agricultural sector, there were over 2.9  million acres of  cultivated land in 1988, and over 5.5 million acres in 2001.

There were over 0.3 million acres of paddy in 1988, and over 0.5 million acres in 2001. The  production of paddy has increased from 14 million baskets of paddy up to 33.2 million baskets. There  were over 0.3 million acres of peas and beans in 1988 and over 1.4 million acres in 2001.  The production of peas and beans has increased six times from over 2 million baskets from 12.3 million  baskets. Oil crops, the main crop of Magway Division, were grown on 1.3 million acres of land in 1988  and on 2.1 million acres in 2001. The production of oil crops has increased over two times from 12.3  million baskets up to 27 million baskets.

In the energy sector, oil is being produced with foreign joint-venture companies in Yenangyoung Oil
Field, Htaukshabin Oil Field and Mann Oil Field. In the industrial sector, Pakokku Industrial Zone and  Yenangyoung Industrial Zone have been established in Magway Division. In Magway Division after  1988, Aunglan Steel Mill, Yoneseik Sugar Mill, Duringabo Sugar Mill, Pakokku Tamar Insecticide  Plant, Taungdwingyi Cotton Mill, Magway Dyeing Factory, soap factories and soft drinks and ice  factories have been built.

An umbrella factory and textile mills are being built in Magway, Pakokku and Pwintbyu. There were  694 dams and lakes in 1988 and 1,312 in 2001 in Magway Division. After 1988, the government has  built Ngamin Dam, Yinmale Dam, Kinpuntaung Dam, Bangon Dam, Yanpe Dam, Pulin Dam,  Sunchaun Dam, Hsaddan Dam, Natmauk Dam and Salin Dam in Magway Division.

The cultivable lands are now being irrigated. Moreover, Naga Dam, Bwetgyi Dam, Padechaung Dam   and Monechaung Dam are also under construction. There were only three river-water pumping stations   in 1988 in Magway Division. Now there have been 43 water-pumping station. Four water-pumping   projects are under implementation. In the construction sector, there were 1,207 miles of roads including   494 miles of tarred roads in 1988 and 1,484 miles of roads including 825 tarred roads in 2001. There  were 775 bridges in 1988 and 1,135 bridges in 2001.

After 1988 in Magway Division, Hsinphyushin Bridge (Yesagyo), Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk),
Salingchaung Nwetame Bridge, Monchaung Bridge, Mannchaung Bridge, Yawchaung Bridge and
Myittha Bridge were built. Ayeyawady River Crossing Bridge (Magway) is under construction. As a  result of construction of roads and bridges, the condition of transport along Pathein-Monywa route on  the western bank of the Ayeyawady River is going smooth.

There were 138 miles of rail roads in 1988 in Magway Division. As Yesagyo-Pakokku-Gangaw  railroads have been built from Aunglan to Magway, there have been altogether 472 miles of rail roads.  In Magway, a modern airport is in course of construction. Executive of Aunglan Township USDA U  Min Sein tabled the motion on participation of USDA members in rural area development tasks. He said  USDA, a strengthening organization, was formed with members of rural and urban areas in the country.  He deeply believes that the association has capability to establish the Myanma living society. The large  amount of USDA members live in rural areas and the members who live in the rural areas are the largest  population of the State. Therefore, aims of the association are coincided with the accomplishment of  rural areas development tasks.

If USDA members cooperate in undertaking the tasks with perseverance, diligence and goodwill, the  development tasks for rural areas will get more momentum. So, the association members must join  hands with the government and strive for achieving success in the rural areas development tasks. And  the association members must carry out the tasks as the national duty. Five aims of the rural areas  development tasks laid down by the State are also basic requirements of rural areas. He believes that if  the five aims would be implemented, poverty in the rural areas could be reduced.

Therefore, he tabled the motion calling on the participation of USDA members to join hands with the  State in rural area development tasks according to the future tasks of the association. Afterwards,  Magway Township USDA member Daw Zar Zar Nwe seconded the motion calling for participation of  USDA members in rural area development tasks.

She mainly put emphasis on discharging the association members in their respective sectors for uplift of  living standard of national people residing in rural area where basis of the agricultural sector and the  State economy as well. These duties of the association members mean to serve interests of the national  and the State. Now, between four and five millions of USDA members have been conducted with  management courses, international relations courses and modern technological courses. And the  association is formed with 18 million of members.

At present, a study of the organization matters of the association shows that the association stands tall  as a highly-qualified and consolidated national force and it has capability to serve the interest of national  people. In conclusion, she heartily supported the motion tabled by Aunglan USDA executive Ko Min  Sein for participation of USDA members in rural development tasks being carried out with a view to  enabling the entire Union to become modern and developed nation. Then, the mass rally passed the  decisions in support of the State's development tasks, rural development tasks laid down by the State  and participation of USDA members in national and rural development tasks. Later, the rally came to an  end by chanting the slogans.


(3) F&R Minister receives Japanese guests

YANGON, 12 Jan. - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received member of the  House of Councillors of Japan Mr Hideo Watanabe and party at his office at 11 am today. They  cordially discussed matters related to cooperation. Also present on the occasion was Governor of the  Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

Japanese guests call on Deputy Minister

YANGON, 12 Jan. - Member of the House of Councillors of Japan Mr Hideo Watanabe and party called  on Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo at the ministry on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road at 2  p.m. today. Also present on the occasion were officials of departments of the ministry.

YANGON, 12 Jan. - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen.   Abel received member of the House of Councillors of Japan Mr Hideo Watanabe and party at his office  at  10 am today. They cordially discussed matters related to cooperation between Japan and Myanmar.  Also  present at the call were departmental officials and officials of the Japanese Embassy.


(4) 28 selected works of art exhibited at IBC

YANGON, 12 Jan.- A total of 28 works selected for the First ASEAN-Myanmar Art Contest are being  exhibited at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road up to 18 January. In addition to five works  of award winners U Aung Myin, U Kyee Myint Saw, U Nay Myo Hsay, U Myat Kyawt and U Min  Zaw, works of U Tin Maung Oo (Mandalay), U Thet Oo (Mon Thet), U Sein Aung, U Ra Hu Lar, U  Hla Toe, U Shwe Kyaw Lin, U Chan Aye (Tin Win), U Kyaiklat Win Maung, U Kay Tun, U Myo  Khin, U Nyein Chan Su, U Dawei Tu Tu, U Maung Myint Aung, U Kyaw Myint Oo, U Hla Phone  Aung, U San Min, U Khaing Min Soe, U Tin Maung Oo (Yangon), U Myint Thein, U Thein Myint  Thein, U Sein Lin, U Shine Lu and U Soe Aung who include the 28-member artist list are displayed at  the exhibition. Anyone may visit the exhibition free of charge from 9 am to 5 p.m. daily. The five award  winners will take part in the 2002 ASEAN Art Contest to be held in Bali Island, Indonesia, in May.  Prizes were presented to the five winners on 11 January.

Sithu Myanmar Co has presented K 20,000 each to 23 artists out of 28. The winners who reside in  Mandalay must take out the cash prizes at the Htanyeiknyo Gallery in Mandalay and those who live in  Yangon must take out at the New Treasure Gallery in Yangon.

MMCWA holds talks on early- childhood nurturing

YANGON,- 12 Jan.- Under the sponsorship of the Early  Childhood Development Supervisory Committee of  the  Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association,  ceremony  to give talks on " Early- Childhood  Nurturing "  was held at the MMCWA  at the corner of Parami Road and  Thanthumar Road, South  Okkalapa Township, this morning.  Present were MMCAW Chairman Professor Daw Kyu Kyu  Shwe,  Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, CEC  member, patrons of the Supervisory Committee, Prof.  Daw  Khin Aye Win of the Psychology Department of Yangon  University, teachers of the Early-  Childhood Development  Centre, and parents. The chairperson made a speech on the occasion. Then,  Prof., Daw Khin Aye Win  gave the talks and replied to the queries raised by the parents. The Vice-  chairperson presented gift to  her and the ceremony came to an end.
  


(5) Armed Forces Day Military Band Contest continues

YANGON, 12 Jan.-The 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day  Commemorative 11th Military (Army, Navy and Air) Band  Contest continued for the second day at the People's Square  this morning. Before the contest, the bands comprising  students of Thakayta Township Basic Education High School  No 1 and 2 presented their skill demonstrations. Then, the  bands representing No 55 LID, North-West Command, the  Defence Services Technological Academy, Eastern  Command and Western Command took part in the contest.  Chairman of Committee for Observance of the contest  Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo presented gifts to the leaders of the school bands. Also  present were senior military officers, members of the Panel of Judges, Tatmadaw members and their  families, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red  Cross Society, guests, teachers and students.  


(6) Cooperative Products Exhibition and Market Festival continues

YANGON, 12 Jan.-The Cooperative Products Exhibition and Market Festival continued for the second  day at the Cooperative Trade Centre of Saya San Plaza in Bahan Township today. At the festival, 147  booths of state and division cooperative societies, and 28 booths of State-owned organizations,  companies and entrepreneurs are being opened.

At the booth of the Cooperative Exports and Imports Enterprise under the Ministry of Cooperatives,  gold embroidery items, marionettes, beans and pulses, onion, garlic, ginger, ripe tamarind, chemicals,  fertillizers and tyres, and at the booth of the Ministry of Industry-2, fluorescent lamps, electric stoves,  chopping hoes, dry cells, radios, water pumps, and KNG 53 and 2 HP motors are being exhibited.  Wives of Ambassadors of ASEAN member nations and three East Asia countries to Myanmar, women  Embassy staff, wives of the Embassy staff, executives of Myanmar ASEAN Women's Friendship  Association visited the festival. Managing Director of CEIE Daw Khin Swe Soe conducted them round  the festival. There, the goods are being sold in retail and wholesale as well as under contracts. There  was a contract of 1,000 tons of green gram and 2,000 tons of pigeon pea worth US$ 732,000 between  CEIE and the Vimalar Global Trade Pte Ltd yesterday, and a contract of 300 tons of green gram and  330 tons of black pulse valued at US$ 182,000 between CEIE and the Agrocorp International Pte Ltd  today. Starting 11 am
daily, entertainment programmes and advertising demonstrations are being  presented at the festival,
which opens from 9 am to 8 p.m. daily.
 


(7) Commander inspects Yangon Division Vegetable and Poultry Farming Special Zone

YANGON, 12 Jan.- Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Yangon Command Brig-Gen. Myint Swe arrived at Yangon Division Vegetable and Poultry Farming  Special Zones near Nyaunghnapin Village, Hmawby Township, this afternoon. He then met with  division-level departmental officials and agriculture and livestock breeding entrepreneurs and attended to  their needs.

At 1.30 p.m., the commander arrived at Hmawby Hsan Hall at the special zone-1 where he was
welcomed by division-level officials. Then, in-charge of the zone-3 Head of Yangon Division Settlement  and Land Records Department U Naing Win, in-charge of the zone-2 District Commissioner of Yangon  North District General Administration Department U Thein Naing, in-charge of the zone-1 Yangon  Division Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U San Maung reported to the commander on land  reclamation, completion of vegetable cultivation, poultry farming tasks, digging of fish ponds and  completion of construction of earth road and drains in 1,300 acres of extended land in the zone-2 and  Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Yangon Division Vegetables and Poultry Farming Special Zone  Commissioner of Yangon Division GAD U Thein Swe on cultivation of vegetables in the special zones  and livestock breeding tasks to be carried out. Afterwards, the entrepreneurs reported on requirements  of the tasks.

Regarding the reports, the commander said the Yangon Division Vegetable and Poultry Farming Special  Zone is being undertaken in accord with the guidance of the Head of State; arrangements are being  made to distribute sufficient fresh vegetables, meat and fish to the people in Yangon; construction tasks  of Kalihtaw Dam will be completed before coming rainy season with a view to supplying sufficient water  for agricultural purposes in the special zones; and he urged national entrepreneurs to strive for achieving  success in vegetable cultivation and livestock breeding tasks.

The commander then attended to their needs. Afterwards, the commander inspected cultivation of
vegetables in the special zones. Ministries and entrepreneurs are growing vegetables in the special zones.  A total of 3,200 acres of land have been put under vegetables. A total of 460,000 broilers and layers  are being raised and over 100,000 broilers have been produced. The commander inspected  construction of Kalihtaw Dam on Kalihtaw 7 Creek near Pyinmadaw Village, Hlegu Township . The  dam is being built with a view to ensuring water supply to the special zones.


(8)  Prizes presented for Traditional Boat Races

YANGON, 12 Jan. - Final matches and prize-presentation ceremony of Myanmar Olympic Committee  Chairman's Cup Traditional Boat Races were held at Inya Lake, Myanmar Rowing Federation,  yesterday afternoon, attended by Chairman of the Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports  Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint, officials of the ministry, Chairman of MRF U Sein Tun and executives and  fans.

After the final matches, Minister Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint presented prizes to the Ministry of
Construction Team, Ayeya-wady Division Team and the Ministry of Industry-2 Team that stood first,  second and third in state/division men's five-oar races. Then, the minister also presented prizes to the  Strand Hotel Team, the Traders Hotel Team and the Sedona Hotel Team that stood first, second and  third respectively in hotel team men's ten-oar races. MRF Chairman U Sein Tun, Vice-Chairman U Tun  Oo, Secretary Proof Dr Than Toe and officials presented prizes to the winning teams. Chairman U Sein  Tun also presented the special prize to the Kachin State Team.

Track and field tournament opens

YANGON, 12 Jan.-The Ministry of Rail Transportation held its second track and field tournament at the  sports grounds of the Myanma Railways in Insein Township this morning. Among the spectators were  Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Chairman of Myanma Track and Field Federation  Director-General of the Fire Services Department U Myint Tun and officials. The minister made a  speech on the occasion. Then, track and field events were held.


(9)  Outstanding students and athletes honoured

YANGON, 12 Jan. - The Ministry of Commerce held a ceremony to honour outstanding students and  athletes at the ministry yesterday afternoon. It was attended by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi  Sone, advisers, directors-general, managing directors, deputy directors-general, general managers, state  / division managers, state / division engineers, outstanding students and athletes. Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi  Sone made a speech and presented cash awards to students of the staff families who passed the  2000-2001 Matriculation Examination with distinctions and athletes who won medals in local and  foreign sports events. Then, an outstanding student and an athlete spoke words of thanks.

YANGON, 12 Jan. - The second friendly soccer match between Yonsei University Football Team of the  Republic of Korea and tentatively selected under-20 Youth Football Team of Myanmar, which is  undergoing training to take part in First ASEAN Under-20 Football Championship, took place at the  sports ground of Thuwunna Youth Training Centre at 4 p.m. today. Among the spectators were  Chairman of the Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint and  officials, Korean Ambassador Mr Chung Jung Gum and officials and fans. The Yonsei University  Football Team beat the Myanmar Youth Football Team 2-0. The third friendly soccer match will be  held at the same venue at 4 p.m. on 16 January and the fourth match at 4 p.m. on 23 January. Admission is  K 400 for grandstand and K 200 for the ordinary class.
