Yangon, 7 Nov- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe met Japanese Prime Minister Mr Junichiro Koizumi at Bilateral Common Room of International Convention Centre in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, on 5 November evening.
Also present at the meeting together with Senior General Than Shwe were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassador to Brunei U Than Tun, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and together with Japanese Prime Minister were Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Mr Shinzo Abe, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Toshiyuki Takano and senior officers.

Yangon, 7 Nov - Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, attended the luncheon hosted by Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiram Anak Hajjah Saleha and Her Royal Highness Pengiram Isteri Hajjah Mariam of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam in honour of the wives of ASEAN Heads of State/Government at the Jerudong Park Polo Club in Bandar Seri Begawan on 5 November.
Also present at the luncheon together with Daw Kyaing Kyaing were Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Daw San Yon, wife of the minister for Foreign Affairs, Daw Kyin Swi, wife of the Ambassador of Myanmar. Also present were the wives of ASEAN Heads of State/Government and distinguished guests.
The guests signed in the visitors' book.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived at Brunei International Airport at 2.45 pm local time on 6 November to return to Yangon. They were seen off at the airport by Minister for Development Dato Dr Ahmad Jumat and party, Ambassador of Myanmar to Brunei Darussalam U Than Tun and wife, Myanmar Embassy staff and families. Senior General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived back at Yangon in the evening.
The meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Thailand and the
People' Republic of China was held at International Convention Centre Plenary Hall in Bandar Seri Begawan at 8 am on 6 November.

( 3 ) Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic
Cooperation Association meets
Yangon, 7 Nov-The meeting of Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association was held at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this evening, attended by Patron of Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present were members of Panel of Patrons the ministers, the deputy minister for Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the Association Lt-Gen Kyaw Than (Retd), members of the Executive Committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and guests.
The Secretary-1 said Myanmar-Thai and Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Cooperation Associations have been formed in both countries. The General Secretary of Thai-Myanmar Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association and party came here recently and matters relating to bilateral cooperation were discussed, he said.
He called for continued implementation of work on Myanmar side and cooperation between the two countries.
He said the Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association was formed with the aim of promoting cooperation in economic, social and cultural sectors between the two countries, serving bilateral interests and strengthening of bilateral goodwill relations.
As the association was formed with the lofty aims to bring about long-term interest, the works of the Myanmar-Thai Cultural and Economic Cooperation Association were to be undertaken sector-wise in accord with the policies of the State, he said.

Myanmar delegation leaves for Indonesia
Yangon, 7 Nov-U Zaw Min Win, General-Secretary of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Joint General Secretary Dr Maung Maung Lay left here for Indonesia by air yesterday afternoon to attend the 58th ASEAN-CCI Council Meeting to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia in November 2001.
They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, CEC members and officials. Vice-President of UMFCCI U Htein Win, who is currently in Malaysia, will also attend the
meeting.

Yangon, 7 Nov - A Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of Information Subcommittee of the Myanmar ASEAN Cultural and Information Committee Director-General of the Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, left here by air for Malaysia this morning to attend the ASEAN Symposium on Communication and Media Studies; Building Bridges and Exploring New Frontiers to be held from 8 to 10 November.
They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of the Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, Managing Director of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise U Myint Thein, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, Deputy Director-General of MRTV Lt-Col Thein Aung, departmental officials and families of the delegation members.

( 5 ) Minister inspects irrigation projects in Mandalay Division
Yangon, 7 Nov - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by Director-General of the Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe, Director-General of the Settlement and Land Records Department U Win Kyi and Managing Director of the Myanma Farms Enterprise U San Myint, arrived at the Lawka Nanda river water pumping project of Water Resources Utilization Department in NyaungU Township, NyaungU District in Mandalay Division on 5 November.
At the briefing hall of the project, the director-general of the WRUD reported to the Minister on work done and tasks to be carried out. The Minister met with those in charge of the project and officials and inspected completion of digging of the main canal, distributories and plantations in the west of NyaungU Township.
Then, the Minister headed for Kyintha dam project of the Irrigation Department near Kyintha Village in Mahlaing Township in Meiktila District where the in-charge (Construction) of the project reported on construction tasks.
The Minister inspected construction of the main dam, spillway and outfall canal and gave instructions on early completion of tasks for water supply for the development of rural areas.
The Kyintha dam is being built for double-cropping of 500-acre of land in the township the whole year round and drinking water supply.
Afterwards, the Minister also inspected Ponmakyi dam in Mahlaing Township.
Yesterday, the Minister and officials visited No 15 Sugar Mill (Shwenyaung) of the Myanma
Sugarcane Enterprise and left instructions there.
Minister inspects construction of bridges
Yangon, 7 Nov-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun arrived at Phyu Creek Bridge construction project in Toungoo on 6 November.
Project Engineer Superintending Engineer U Myint Lwin reported on installation of reinforced concrete girders, flooring and railing and progress of work on approach roads.
The minister inspected installation of reinforced concrete girders, flooring and construction of approach roads.
The minister and party went to Kwinchaung Bridge on Yangon-Mandalay Road. Senior Engineer U Han Soe reported on driving of piles. The minister then gave instructions.
The minister and party proceeded to the site of Sittaung River Bridge (Shwekyin-Madauk) on Nyaunglebin-Madauk-Shwekyin Road.
Project Engineer U Win Aung reported on construction of approach roads on Madauk and Shwekyin sides, driving of piles and installation of reinforced concrete girders.
The minister and party inspected construction of Bridge No 3/91 Yenwe Bridge on Yangon-Mandalay Road. Senior Engineer Daw Si Si Than reported on work.
The minister then gave instructions.
The minister also inspected construction of Bai-da-chaung Bridge on Yangon-Mandalay Road.
Health Minister attends Orthopaedic Surgeon's Conference
Yangon, 7 Nov- The opening ceremony of the 17th Conference of Myanmar Orthopaedic Surgeons was held at the Hall of Myanmar Medical Association (Central) on Theinbyu Street this morning with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo and Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, directors-general, deputy directors-general, rectors, Chairman of MMA(Central) Professor U Myo Myint and executives, Chairman of Myanmar Orthopaedic Surgeons Association of MMA Professor U Thein Myint Tun and executives, professors, specialists, surgeons form home and abroad, members and guests.
Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered an opening speech. Then, Professor U Myo Myint and Professor U Thein Myint Tun extended greetings. Afterwards, Chairman of the Committee for Reception and Accommodation Dr Aye Ko spoke on matters relating to the reception.
After the ceremony, the minister together with guests viewed the booths of medical science shown in commemoration of the opening of the conference.
The conference will be held up to 10 November. 28 papers on orthopaedic disease will be admitted and one workshop and three symposium will be
held.

Malaysian women's delegation visits MMCWA
Yangon, 7 Nov-A Malaysian women's delegation led by Datin Jamilah bt Mohd Zain of Women's Development Group of Penang State, Malaysia arrived at Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township this afternoon.
They were welcomed by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and EC members.
Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe extended greetings to the guests and briefed facts about the association. They discussed bilateral women's development activities and exchanged gifts. Datin Jamilah bt Mohd Zain of Women's Development Group of Penang State and members signed in the
visitors' book.
Malaysian women's delegation observed photos on activities of MMCWA and visited vocational training school and clinic on women's

Press conference on Myanmar Tong Tah Trade Fair 2001 held
Yangon, 7 Nov - A press conference on Myanmar Tong Tah Trade Fair 2001, jointly organized by Tong Tah Ltd and Dragon Exhibitions Ltd with the permission of the Ministry of Commerce, was held at the Yangon Trade Centre on Pazundaung Road here this afternoon.
The trade fair will be held at the Yangon Trade Centre with the aim to introduce new products to the public.
Among the attendance were Managing Director U Tin Kha of the News and Periodicals Enterprise, of the Ministry of Information, Director (News) U Hla Tun, officials from the ministry, newsmen and invited guests.
Managing Director U Khin Maung Latt of Tong Tah Ltd and Managing Director U Aung Aung of Dragon Exhibitions Ltd briefed on the aim and agenda of the fair and kinds of goods to be displayed.
The queries raised by the newsmen were replied to and the conference came to a close.
The trade fair will display garments, fashionable goods, decorative goods, personal goods, cosmetics, housewares, paper and stationery, medicine, sport equipment, construction and agricultural materials, gadgets and electronic appliances at over 90 booths from 9 am to 6 pm starting 8 till 11 November.

White elephant emerges from Rathedaung Township,
Rakhine State
A white elephant has emerged from Ahtetnanya, Rathedaung Township, Rakhine
State, in the western part of Myanmar during the third week of
October, 2001.
The eight-year-old male elephant possesses all
the characteristics of a white elephant. Of the eight elephants captured
by the staff of the Ministry of Forestry at Chutpyin village at
Ahtetnanya village-tract, an
eight-year old bull with a height of nearly six feet and with pearl eyes is found to be a white elephant.
The staff were from an elephant capturing group of the elephant camp of the ministry at the village.
The animal is significant and different from others as under the rain its skin is whitish-light pink colour; and its colour changes to moderate russet on a cool sunny day. Besides, it is found that the animal has all the characteristics of a white elephant.
According to the learned persons of the past successive eras, the characteristics of a white elephant are the pearl eyes, the white hoofs, the back which hangs down like the bough of a banana tree, the white hairs on the body and tail and the tah gah paik (closed door) shape tail. Its ears are larger than ordinary elephants.
The white elephant found at Ahtetnanya in the Union of Myanmar has pearl eyes, yellowish eyebrow, reddish eyelids, back which hangs down like the bough of a banana tree, white hairs on the body, and long and straight tails shapes like the tah gah paik (closed door).
The tail at its base is black and tip is white.
When washed with water, its colour turns reddish. During the rainy season, its colour is whitish-light pink, and under the cold sunny weather, it is moderate russet.
The large herbivore is a bull with a pair of tusks. Each tusk is six inches long and five inches in girth. Its ears are larger than other elephants, and besides it looks more stable than them.
Throughout the history, white elephants emerged during time of the kings and governments who ruled the nation in accord with the ten royal precepts.
In accord with the records compiled by the learned persons, it is said that the white elephant brings about peace, stability and prosperity to the nation; that it prevents all hazards and dangers;.and that the nation enjoys annual bumper food harvests and is rich during the times the while elephant emerges.
Emergence of the white elephant is a good omen for the nation at the time the State is endeavouring
to build a peaceful, modern and developed nation. It is assumed that the
nation will be peaceful, prosper and be totally free from all the
dangers because of the while elephant.
Training courses conclude at MAPT
Yangon, 7 Nov- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone delivered an address at the closing ceremony of the Basic Management Course No 1/2001, Book-keeping and Quality Control Course No 2/2001, English Proficiency Course No 8 and the opening ceremony of Basic Computer course No 3 and Finance and Accounts Management Course No1/2001 held at the hall of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading on Pansondan Street this morning .
Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, the director-general of the Directorate of Trade, the director-general of the Border Trade Department, the managing director of the Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, invited guests, course instructors and trainees.
At the ceremony, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made a speech and presented certificates to outstanding trainees. On behalf of the trainees, a trainee spoke words of

Measures for holding World Bodybuilding
Championship co-ordinated
Yangon, 7 Nov-The Leading Committee for holding of the 55th World Bodybuilding Championship held its third meeting at the National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this afternoon.
Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman of Leading Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint spoke on the occasion. Also present were the director-general of Sports and Physical Education Department, officials, chairman of Myanmar Bodybuilding and Physical Culture Federation and EC members, Secretary of World Bodybuilding Federation and Vice-Chairman of Asia Bodybuilding Federation Mr Paul Chua and guests.
