Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman offers soondawgyi, lights to Maha Wizaya Pagoda

Yangon, 31 Oct - State Peace and Development Council member Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon Command Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than attended a ceremony to offer soondawgyi, fruits and lights to the Maha Wizaya Pagoda held at the Gandhakutitaik of the pagoda this afternoon. Also present on the occasion were commanders of military regions, members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, the chairman of Pagoda Board of Trustees, Chairman of Yangon Division All Bus Lines Control Committee U Phone Kyaw and members of Pagoda Board of Trustees, members of Wut Associations, and the Chairmen of bus line associations. Members of the bus lines in Yangon (West) District offered various kinds of snacks, fruits and flowers to the pagoda. Ceremonies to offer lights and recite parittas will be held at the pagoda beginning 6 pm tonight till 2 November.

Ninth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions conclude

 Yangon, 31 Oct-The song competition of the Ninth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions was held at the National Museum on Pyay Road in Dagon Township for the 17th and final day this morning. Chairman of panel of judges Daw Tin Tin Mya and party supervised the competition. Altogether 13 contestants took part in the professional level men's song  competition with the song 'Saga E-wakan".

 In the afternoon, 16 contestants participated in the basic education level aged 5-10 girls' religious song competition. Present on the occasion were member of the Panel of Patrons Chairman of Leading Committee member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, members of Panel of Patrons Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Minister for Culture U Win Sein, members of the Leading Committee, members of the Work Committee and Sub-committees, senior military officers, heads of departments, teachers, students and enthusiasts.

The song competitions were held at the National Museum on Pyay Road from 15 to 31 October, the dancing competitions from 15 to 20 October. Maha Janaka Drama Competition from 15 to 21 October, marionette competition on 21 October, marionette Buridat Drama Competition from 22 to 26 October, piano, harp and dobat competitions from 22 to 30 October, at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street in Dagon Township, the song composing competition from 15 to 26 October, mandolin, xylophone, violin and oboe competitions from 15 to 21 October and from 27 to 30 October at Kanzawza Theatre of Fine Arts Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Bahan Township and Ozi, saing (individual) and (team) and harp competitions from 15 to 30 October at the Padonma Theatre on Bagaya Road in Sangyoung Township. All performing arts competitions ended in the evening.

Yangon,31 Oct - Minister for cooperatives U Aung San received Managing Director Mr Yoshihiro Araki of JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) based in Yangon, at his office at 2 pm today. Also present were Director-General of Cooperatives Department Col Soe Win, Director-General U Sein Than of Cottage Industries Department, Managing Director Daw Khin Swe Soe of Cooperatives Export and Import Enterprise, Adviser Dr Than Htaik and officials.

 Yangon, 31 Oct- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received General Manager of China Perfect Industry & Trade Co from the People's Republic of China Mr Charles Song and party at his office at 4.30 pm today. Also present at the call were the director-general and the managing directors of departments and enterprises.

Measures for holding educative exhibition on traffic rules co-ordinated

 Yangon, 31 Oct-A preliminary coordination meeting on holding of traffic rules educative exhibition sponsored by Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee was held at the Yangon City Development Committee this afternoon. Present were Patron of Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than, Chairman of Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, chairmen and members of the leading committee for holding of traffic rules educative exhibition and sub-committees, officials and guests. Minister Col Tin Hlaing said the traffic rules educative exhibition was an appropriate programme.

 The Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee undertook measures for reduction of traffic accidents yearly. But there are no considerable fall in accidents and deaths. He said the committee laid emphasis on traffic rules enforcement with the use of modern techniques in coperation with YCDC and there are still traffic rule violations. He spoke of the need to promote educative activities among the people in cooperation with the departments concerned. The minister spoke on information, education throughout the country and assistance of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Director-General of Road Administration Department U Hla Thaung Myint reported on the exhibition and Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo on traffic rules enforcement. Joint Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win and Director-General U Hla Thaung Myint reported on work to be undertaken. The minister then fulfilled the requirements.

Stake-driving ceremony of Ayeyawady Bridge (Mandalay) held

Yangon, 31 Oct-A ceremony to drive stakes of the Ayeyawady River Bridge (Mandalay) was held at the Mingala Mandat at Shwekyet-yet Village in Amarapura Township in Mandalay Division yesterday morning. It was attended by Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Central Command Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, departmental officials, USDA members, Red Cross Brigade members, Auxiliary Fire Brigade members, teachers, students and local people.

 Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun delivered a speech, and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win thanked the Ministry of Construction and staff of the Public Works. Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win drove stakes at the designated places at the auspicious time. Then, they sprinkled scented water on the stakes. They performed rituals of silver and golden showers to mark the success of the ceremony. The lower structure of the bridge will be built with reinforced bole piles and the upper structure with steel frames. The approach structure will be built of PC girder and box girder. The four-lane bridge will be 5,644 feet long and its motorway 49 feet wide. There will be six feet wide pedestrian lanes on either side. The bridge can bear 60-ton loads.

Industry-1 Minister inspects factories in Mandalay Division

Yangon, 31 Oct - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung arrived at No 3 Paper Factory of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries in Paleik, Singaing Township in Mandalay Division and inspected the warehouse for finished products, rolling of papers with modern machines, warehouse for raw materials and categorizing of paper types, transportation of raw material to pulping machine, crushing of raw material and production of paper. He also inspected quality control and testing of quality of paper and finished newsprint for the dailies.

At the briefing hall of the factory, the minister met with the officials and pointed out weaknesses and strength and gave instructions for future tasks. Then, he headed for Garment Factory of Myanma Textile Industries in Paleik and inspected the departments there. Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung met with secretaries and executives of Mandalay Division, Mandalay District, PyinOoLwin District, Myin-gyan District, Meiktila District, Kyaukse District and NyaungU District USDAs and discussed matters on future tasks, education, health care services and social welfare tasks for local people and smooth transportation. Secretary of Mandalay Division USDA U Tin Maung Oo, and secretaries and executives reported on social welfare tasks carried out in respective regions and future tasks to be done to the CEC member who attended to the needs.

Advanced marine tech to be added to IMT curriculum

Yangon 31 Oct - A coordination meeting on conducting courses in advanced marine technology at Institute of Marine Technology was held at the institute this morning. Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe delivered an address at the meeting. Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, heads of department and technicians sought means to conduct courses on advanced marine technology, to amend the curriculum, to appoint more teachers and to extend the buildings of the institute.

The minister then attended to their needs. Also present were Commander of Naval Dockyard Command Headquarters Commodore Paw Tun and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises. After the meeting, the minister inspected the construction of a 12,000-ton capacity dry dockyard covered by Hsinmalaik Shipyard Development Project of the Myanmar Shipyards. He observed the piling work. Managing Director of MS U Percy Maung Maung and Chinese technicians of Shandong Agricultural Industry and Commerce Group Corporation explained points of the project. The minister looked into their requirements.

( 6 Agriculture and livestock breeding tasks inspected

 Yangon, 31 Oct - Chairman of the Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay inspected agriculture and livestock breeding tasks in Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division this morning. He visited the orange, lime, durian, rambutan, guava, pomelo, coconut plantations and viewed the quality of lime and guava produced in the region. He gave instructions on distribution and growing of pineapple plants among the trees in the plantations and preparations for water supply in the hot season. He then inspected the harvesting of summer paddy, prawn breeding pond, 25-ton rice mill and briquette factory. The mayor also inspected poultry farming.

" Soon" offered to members of Sangha

Yangon, 31 Oct Ñ The staff of the Ministry of Health presented alms and offered "soon " to student members of the Sangha of the State Pariyatti Sasana University (Yangon) at Mogok Sonsarsaung of the University on Kaba Aye Hill this morning. Present on the occasion were Rector of the University Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Vannita, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and wife Daw Yin Yin Myint, Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo and wife Daw Tin Tin Mya, Deputy Minister Prof Dr Kyaw Myint and wife Daw Nilar Thaw, directors-general of the departments under the ministry, Director-General of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, officials and families of the staff. The Rector Sayadaw administered the Five Precepts. The minister, the deputy ministers and their wives presented offertories to the Rector Sayadaw. The minister presented K 100,000 for a day's meal for student members of the Sangha to Director-General U Sann Lwin. The Rector Sayadaw delivered a sermon, and then those present shared merits gained. After the ceremony, " soon" was offered to members of the Sangha.

MMCWA Training Camp concludes

 Yangon, 31 Oct-A concluding ceremony of the Youth Education and Training Camp (2/2001), organized by the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, was held at the meeting hall of MMCWA at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township, this morning.

It was attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC members, patrons of the supervising committee, youth representatives of states and divisions and guests. MMCWA Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe made a concluding speech. Then, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented completion certificates to trainees. On behalf of the trainees, Maung Yazar Win and Ma Nay Zaza Win recounted their experience. Afterwards, the ceremony came to a close with a song " Flowers in the Garden " sung by the youth representatives.

Obstetric and Gynaecological Conference to be held

Yangon, 31 Oct- The 5th Obstetric and Gynaecological Conference will be held by the obstetric and gynaecology section of Myanmar Medical Association at the MMA Auditorium on Theinbyu Road from 23 to 24 November. Interested persons, obstetricians and gynaecologists may attend the conference.

( 7 ) Plans under way to set up cinchona plantations in Natyegan region

 Yangon, 31 Oct - Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung inspected setting up of a cinchona plantation in Natyegan region yesterday. Accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise Dr Thein Htay and officials, the deputy minister first visited the paddy seed production farm in Kyaukse on 27 October. Farm in-charge Daw Tin Win explained production of paddy seeds and use of gamma ray in the production process to improve the quality of the seeds. She also conducted the deputy minister and party around the quality seed production sector and paddy fields. Efforts should be made to produce pest-resistant quality paddy seeds and to distribute them to local farmers, stressed the deputy minister. At Lunkyaw Model Farm, the deputy minister and party observed the 3,000-acre paddy field, pest prevention methods, water supply, production of quality cotton strains and the training and education sector.

 They then inspected cotton cultivated on a large stretch of land. In Wundwin Township, they inspected conservation of various cotton species. On 29 October, the deputy minister and party inspected progress in installation of Tanyaung Pumped-Water Station in Salin Township. Deputy Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Hla Myint expalined points of the project. The project will start to irrigate 15,000 acres of crops in the cultivation season next year. They then went to Pwintbyu Township. Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Maung Win and farmers reported on experimental farming and hervesting of model farms. The next day, they observed setting up of a cinchona plantation at Natyegan region on Padan-An road. Dr Sein Hla Bo of Myanma Agriculture Service explained progress in the setting up the farm. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung looked into the requirements in installing an irrigation system to the plantation, building of roads and systematic plantation of the trees. Climateic and soil condition of Natyegan region, which is located about 4,000 feet above sea level, is suitable to grow cinchona. Plans are under way to establish more cinchona plantations.

Film stars comfort cancer patients

 Yangon, 31 Oct - Movie stars  Kyaw Thu, Dwe, Lwin Moe, Tun Tun Win, Moedi, director Maung Myo Min, Htet Htet Moe Oo, Khaing Thin Kyi and Eindra Kyaw Zin, headed by Chairman of Myanma Motion Picture Asiayon U Sein Tin, paid a second visit to U Hla Tun Cancer Hospice, where cancer patients are being treated, near No (2) Highway, Dagon Myothit (East) Township, at 10 am today, and comforted the cancer patients. U Hla Tun, Chairman of the Myitta Yeikmon Cancer Foundation, explained the purposes of the Foundation, tasks being undertaken and future programmes. ( 8 ) F&R wins elimination-round premier league soccer

Yangon, 31 Oct - Ministry of Finance and Revenue team beat Ministry of Forestry team 3-2 in the final match of elimination-round premier league soccer trophy at Youth Sports Training Centre at Thuwunna here this evening. The soccer tourney was sponsored by Myanmar Football Federation. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint presented the championship trophy to the F&R Ministry team. He also presented prizes to teams which won champion trophies in the premier league, first division, second division and third division soccer matches of 2000-2001 season.

The best footballer award for the season went to Soe Myat Min of the champion team. Also present were Judge Advocate-General Maj-Gen Thein Soe, deputy ministers, senior military officers, General-Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik, officials, guests and fans. President of Myanmar Football Federation U Thaung Htaik and officials also presented prizes to winning teams in third division, second division, first division and premier league matches.

Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Shield Track and Field Meet held

Yangon, 31 Oct- Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Track and Field Meet was opened at the sports ground of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters at 1 pm today. On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Soe Thein made an opening address. Present on the occasion were senior naval officers of Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Office and headquarters, naval flotillas, central depots and vessels in Yangon Station, officers and Tatmadawmen, family members and athletes. Altogether nine teams participated in the meet. On behalf of Commander-in-Chief (Navy), Commodore Soe Thein presented the championship shield to the Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters team.
