( 1 Myanmar determined and firmly committed to develop Information Technology Efforts should be more directed towards how ICT should be effectively put to use and how to build a strong ICT Industry

Yangon, 19 Oct- The Third International ICT Exhibition and ICT Forum jointly conducted by Myanmar Computer Scientists Association and Myanmar Computer Industry Association under the sponsorship of Myanmar Computer Federation was held at the Traders Hotel this morning. Chairman of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt addressed the opening ceremony.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, deputy ministers, ambassadors, charges d'affaires ai, officials of UN agencies, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, participants, officials and members of Myanmar e-National Task Force, Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Scientists Association, Myanmar Computer Industry Association and Myanmar Computer Enthusiasts Association, officials of computer-related companies and guests. The Secretary-1 said: It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to deliver the opening address at this Opening Ceremony of the Third ICT Exhibition and ICT Forum. I would also like to extend a most cordial welcome to all the participants to the Exhibition and the Forum and wish all the foreign participants a most enjoyable stay in our country, Myanmar.

On behalf of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council and on my own, I wish to congratulate the Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Scientists Association and Myanmar Computer Industry Association for organizing not only the Exhibition but also complementing it with a Forum. The present Exhibition and Forum would not have been possible without the assistance and support from the sponsoring institutions and organizations and our heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to all of them. We live in a period of rapid change and technological advancement. Our Government is fully aware that in order to transform Myanmar into a prosperous and developed state, we must be able to meet the challenges of the time. We also realize that to reach our goal, we must transform our society into a knowledge-based society in which the Information and Communication Technology will play a leading role.

Therefore, Information Technology plays a vital role in our concentrated and determined efforts for socio-economic development. We fully believe that Information Technology can provide a means to leapfrogging the nation into the more advanced ranks of the world. Myanmar is therefore determined and firmly committed to develop Information Technology in our nation. Towards this end, the Government is providing the guidance, encouragement and necessary support and assistance to advance ICT development. This programme is being implemented systematically and extensively. As a result, during the last couple of years, through the cooperation and coordination between public and private sectors, considerable progress has been made and we intend to speed up the development process. Advancement in IT field can only be achieved through nurturing of required human resource development. With a view to making the children of our nation computer literate, e-Education has been introduced in the nation and the significant progress achieved. Today, almost all Basic Education Schools including the primary level schools have already established or in the process of establishing multimedia classrooms.

At the same time, twenty Computer colleges have been established in States and Divisions to supplement the two universities dedicated to IT professional education to ensure a steady pool of computer professionals. An e-learning center was opened recently with the assistence of Japan to train IT professionals who want to sit for JITEE (Japan Information Technology Engineer Examination). This certification programme will create an informal education environment in which IT professionals can obtain internationally recognized certificate. As Myanmar is a signatory to e-ASEAN Framework, e-National Task Force was formed to implement the framework. Efforts on development of e-Commerce, e-Government, e-Education, preparation of Cyber laws and improving the ICT infrastructure by the e-National Task Force are progressing satisfactorily. In the efforts to develop IT Industry, with the full support of the state, a consortium of private companies is constructing an ICT park which will be equipped with adequate ICT infrastructures to compete in the international IT market. It will be operational by the end of this year. Teleport facility presently under construction beside ICT Park is also planned to be operational by the end of this year. The Teleport will provide VSAT satellite link to create an Intranet covering the whole Myanmar.

It will also provide Internet access service for companies and for business and educational purposes through MPT gateway. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Myanmar Computer Federation and Associations for their sustained efforts on ICT development. The activities such as the scholarship programmes, monthly seminars and workshops, Special Interest Group, Resource center, training programmes are driving forces for development of ICT. Under the guidance of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council, Myanmar Computer Confederation has also successfully prepared the first draft of IT Master Plan. I believe that this ICT Exhibition and ICT Forum will contribute considerably to the ICT development in Myanmar. ICT Exhibition will provide a very good opportunity for IT companies to show their products and services and open the door for business opportunities. The Exhibition will reflect the current status of ICT in Myanmar as well as indicate the future trends. It will also provide the business enterprises to look at and compare the alternative solutions of IT applications Equally important, the Exhibition and Forum will acquaint general public with the power and capabilities of ICT.

The themes of the ICT Forum, Opportunities and Issues for ICT Applications and ICT Industry Development are indeed very appropriate at this point of time. During last couple of years, most of the efforts have been directed to improve awareness of the value of ICT and its development. At this point of time, I think that not only the business community but also the whole society recognizes the importance of ICT in economic and social development. Our efforts now should be more directed towards how ICT should be effectively put to use and how to build a strong ICT Industry so that it will become a key industry contributing considerably to the economy. Presentations of our guest speakers from various countries at the present Forum will surely provide us with valuable lessons in our effort to formulate the policies and strategies and preparation of action plan for ICT development as a vehicle for socio-economic development. Once again I would like to thank our guest speakers and their institutions for their cooperation and support. Then, Chairman Computer Industry Association U Tin Win Aung reported on the third International ICT Exhibition and ICT Forum, and Chairman of Myanmar Computer Scientists Association U Thein Oo on the ICT Forum.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party and guests went to the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road where the third International ICT Exhibition would take place.
