( 1 ) Secretary-1 attends opening of Myanmar-Japan e-Learning Centre

Yangon, 8 Oct- A ceremony to open Myanmar-Japan e-Learning Centre, jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan, e-National Task Force of Myanmar and Myanmar Computer Federation (MCF), was held at the International Business Centre this morning. Chairman of Myanmar Computer Technology Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony.

Also present at the ceremony were the ministers, the deputy ministers, Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Mr Keiji Furuya and members, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori and officials, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, personnel of Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Scientist Association, Myanmar Computer Industry Association and officials of other computer-related companies. Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel made an opening speech. Deputy Minister Mr Keiji Furuya and Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori extended greetings. Deputy Minister Mr Keiji Furuya handed over documents relating to computers and teaching aids to be used at the Myanmar-Japan e-Learning Centre to Chairman of e-National Task Force of Myanmar Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Hlaing Win. Later, Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win spoke words of thanks.

After the opening ceremony, the Secretary-1, the ministers and party and guests had photos taken. Then, a ceremony to open the training hall of the Myanmar-Japan e-Learning Centre was held at the Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Park in Hline Township.

Minister Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win, Deputy Minister Mr Keiji Furuya and Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori formally opened the training hall. Then, the ministers and guests viewed Myanmar-Japan e-Learning Centre.

The members of the Committee for Construction and Administration of MICT Park explained the purpose of establishing MICT Park and working programmes to Deputy Minister Mr Keiji Furuya and party.

Altogether 50 teachers from the University of Computer Technology, Yangon University and private computer schools are attending the Training the Trainer Programme to take Japan IT Engineer Examination. The course will last six weeks and Japanese professors and lecturers will give lectures. Similar courses will be opened continuously.

Secretary-3 inspects Zaungtu Hydroelectric Power Plant

Yangon, 8 Oct- Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, together with members of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned, left for Zaungtu Hydroelectric Power Plant Project north-west of Bago, Bago Division, by helicopter this morning.

On the way to Zaungtu Hydroelectric Plant Project in Bago Township, the Secretary-3 and party inspected the flow of water into Ngamoeyeik Dam and Tabuhla Dam and forest resources in that region. On arrival at Zaungtu Hydroelectric Power Plant at noon, the Secretary-3 and party were welcomed by member of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commissioner of Division General Administration Department U Chit Maung, Chairman of Bago District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Tint and officials.

 

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on implementation of Zaungtu Hydroelectric Power Plant with the aim of generating power to meet the increasing power demand, supplying water for agriculture, preventing the overflow of Bago River and ensuring proper waterway, the cost of the project, the opening of the power plant on 22 March 2000, the irrigating of 36,250 acres of land and generation of power with two 10-megawatt turbines. Deputy Director-General of the Forest Department U Shwe Kyaw reported on the existence of forests and bamboo groves in Zaungtu region, Bago Township.

Head of Bago Division Settlement and Land Records Department U Than Soe Aye reported on existence of fallow and virgin lands in Bago Division and reclamation of land for establishment of plantations. Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave an additional report. Minister U Aung Thaung reported on the condition and building a pulp factory and use of timber and bamboo in Zaungtu region at the factory. The Secretary-3 gave instructions and inspected the hydroelectric power plant and the flow of water into Zaungtu Dam. The Secretary-3 and party then inspected the spillway and left there for Yangon by helicopter in the evening. Zaungtu Hydroelectric Power Plant, opened in March 2000, has been generating power exceeding the target.

( 3 ) Minister meets General Manager of Majuko Corporation of ROK

Yangon, 8 Oct- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met General Manager Mr Sunil Patwari of Majuko Corporation of the Republic of Korea and party at his office this afternoon. Also present were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of the Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of the Border Trade Department U Nay Win, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials.

Minister for Hotels and Tourism meets MD of Victoria Entertainment Resort Club Ltd

Yangon, 8 Oct- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Managing Director Mr Drake Poh of Victoria Entertainment Resort Club Ltd at his office this morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt, Managing Director of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services U Kyi Tun and officials.

Minister for Industry-1 inspects mills in Magway, Bago Divisions

Yangon, 8 Oct- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and officials inspected the site for construction of Aunglan Textile Mill near Mogaung Village in Aunglan Township yesterday. Manager Lt-Col Soe Hlaing of Shwedaung Textile Mill and Managing Director U Oo Thein Maung of Textile Industries reported on the work.

The minister inspected the site chosen as second priority by Pyay-Aunglan Road east of Inngon Village and gave instructions. The minister inspected production of soft drinks at Myananda Soft Drinks and Ice Factory in Pyay, Bago Division (West). He gave instructions on installation of new machines. The minister and party inspected the sale of products of the Ministry of Industry-1 at Win Thuza Shop. The minister went to Shwedaung Textile and Finishing Plant and inspected quality control, finishing, printing and dyeing processes. He also viewed the designs produced every year as of 1991 and gave instructions. In the evening, the minister proceeded to Thayawady Ceramics Factory and inspected production of ceramic wares and wall tiles.

CPT Minister inspects satellite communication work

Yangon, 8 Oct- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw inspected maintenance and construction of staff housing at the head office of Directorate of Telecommunications in Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township this afternoon. The director-general of the department gave an account of allotment of funds for construction of the building, progress of work and clean water and electricity supply.

Then, the minister inspected radio wave frequency measuring station and left instructions on conducting agriculture and livestock breeding task for staff welfare. Later, he proceeded to Ground Satellite Station at Toegyaunggalay and inspected allotment of housing for the staff at the newly built housing and the on-going housing project. Afterwards, he viewed land preparation work for construction of a fuel storage in the compound of the station. He also inspected the antenna and the tower for satellite communication station. He heard a report on plans to be carried out for Asia-Europe underground cable network and gave instructions to the officials.

Minister inspects maintenance of roads, bridges in Bago, Magway Divisions, Rakhine State

Yangon, 8 Oct- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of Public Works, inspected maintenance tasks of Yangon-Pyay Highway on 4 October. On 5 October, the minister and party inspected the condition of Pyay-Padaung-Okshitpin Road section and roads and bridges on Okshinpin-Padan section of Pathein-Monywa Highway (northern part) and fulfilled the requirements. Then, the minister inspected Mindon Creek Bridge on Pathein-Monywa Highway and gave instructions on maintenance and long-term durability of the bridge and piers. In the afternoon, the minister and party arrived at the construction site of Shwechaung Bridge. In the briefing hall, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint reported on progress in construction of the bridge and future tasks.

The minister gave instructions on timely completion of construction work and stockpiling of construction materials. Afterwards, the minister inspected bridges on 64-mile-long Minbu-An Road and sections of the road and fulfilled the requirements. Officials reported on the site chosen for construction of new Thayu Suspension Bridge near Pebadon Village, An Township, and the finding of the road axis. The minister gave instructions on the soil test and the drawing of a design for the two-lane road as quickly as possible. The minister heard reports on repairs of Yangon-Sittway Highway between mile posts 9/7 and 10/3 and gave instructions on availability of gravel for maintenance of roads and repairs of drains. He then attended to their needs. Next, the minister inspected maintenance tasks of Dalet Creek Bridge, Yaw Creek Bridge and Natyaygantaung road section.

Cambodian Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister arrives

Yangon, 8 Oct- At the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia Mr Hor Namhong and party of Cambodia arrived here by air this evening. They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Cambodian Ambassador Mr Nim Chantara and officials of the ministry.

Minister inspects Insein Locomotive Workshop

Yangon, 8 Oct- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by officials, arrived at Insein Locomotive Locomotive Workshop and gave instructions to the responsible personnel yesterday evening. Workshop manager U Soe Win reported on tasks being carried out and requirements. The minister then inspected maintenance of locomotives, required accessories for repairing Locomotives and spare parts manufactured at the workshop and attended to requirements.

( 6 Commander inspects regional development tasks in Singu

Yangon, 8 Oct- A ceremony to plant Thithseint trees (belleric myrobalan) was held on both sides of mile-post No 45/1 on Mandalay-Mogok Road in Ngwedaung Village-tract of Singu Township on 6 October morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, senior military officers, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Kyaw Oo, departmental officials and local people. First, the commander planted a Thithseint tree at the designated place and those present also planted 172 Thithseint trees on both sides of the road. Similarly, 1,545 Thith-seint trees were planted in Ward-1 and Ward-2 in the township. Next, the commander inspected stirring and applying of fertilizer at Manawthukha paddy field of farmer U Tin Aung in Shwepyi Village, Singu Township.

The commander then gave instructions to officials. A total of 13,548 acres of monsoon paddy against the targeted 16,100 acres for 2001-2002 have been cultivated in Singu Township. Afterwards, the commander, accompanied by departmental officials, went to Nyaungwun Village Basic Education Primary School and inspected completion of the buildings of Affiliated BEMS and teaching aids. He then attended to the requirements. The two-storey new school building, 54 feet long and 30 feet wide, was built at a cost of K 2.4 million by local people under the supervision of Mandalay Division USDA. After that, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint inspected construction of the school building and teaching aids at Shwepyi BEMS. The commander then gave instructions on greening tasks to be carried out in the compound of the school. At 10.30 am, the commander proceeded to the construction site of Tanga Bridge on Mandalay-Madaya-Mogok Road in Madaya Township and inspected progress in construction of approach structures, piers and the approach road on Mogok bank. Tanga Bridge is of reinforced concrete type and it will be 360 feet long and 28 feet wide.

Victorious track & field athletes honoured in Pathein

Yangon, 8 Oct- A ceremony to honour victorious track & field athletes who achieved success in XXI SEA Games was held at the meeting hall No 1 of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Office in Pathein on 6 October morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and members, departmental officials, social organizations and officials, athletes and guests. Victorious athletes were individually introduced to the commander. The commander gave a speech and presented cash awards to the winners. Then, on behalf of the athletes, President of Myanmar Track & Field Federation Director-General U Myint Tun of Fire Services Department spoke words of thanks and the ceremony came to an end.

( 7 Pyinnya Alin Modern Libraries opened in Sagaing

Yangon, 8 Oct- Pyinnya Alin Modern Libraries are opened in districts, townships and villages for those who want to seek knowledge and for the development of human resources. The opening ceremony of Pyinnya Alin Modern Library in Hsataung Village, Sagaing Township, was held at the office of Hsataung Village Peace and Development Council on 3 October morning, attended by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win.

Also present on the occasion were division/district/township level departmental officials, members of social organizations, teachers, students and local people. After presenting a computer and 500 CD-ROMs to Chairman of Village Peace and Development Council U Mu, the commander delivered a speech. Then, townselder U Htay Cho and Chairman U Mu formally opened the library and, together with the officials, looked around the library. The commander then attended the opening ceremony of Ywathitgyi Village Pyinnya Alin Modern Library in Sagaing Township and made a speech. He accepted K 200,000 donated by wellwishers and formally opened the library . The commander and officials looked around the library.

Commander attends coordination meeting on regional development

Yangon, 8 Oct- Shan State Peace and Development Council held a coordination meeting with departmental officials, service personnel, townselders from Taunggyi and neighbouring villages at the City Hall in Taunggyi on 6 October morning. Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Deputy Commander Col Myint Aung, senior military officers, departmental officials, members of social organizations and invited guests attended the meeting. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo explained regional development tasks being carried out.

Then, the departmental officials briefed on work done and progress of regional development tasks and townselders and officials from social organizations made suggestions. The commander attended to the needs and gave instructions on cooperation with departments and local people in carrying out the tasks. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the commander. After the meeting, the commander met with the state level departmental officials and attended to the requirements.

( 8 ) Coastal Region Commander's Shield Boxing Tournament ends

Yangon, 8 Oct- The prize presentation ceremony of the Sixth Coastal Region Command Commander's Shield Boxing Tournament was held at Myeik Stadium on 2 October evening. Present on the occasion were Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Latt, staff officers of the command headquarters, commanding officers of regiments and units, officers and other ranks and their families, departmental officials and spectators. After the final matches, officials presented prizes to the winners in the respective classes. On behalf of the commander, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Latt presented cash awards and championship shield to the first prize winning team.

Trade and economic cooperation discussed

Yangon, 8 Oct- A coordination meeting on trade and economic cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand and between Myanmar and Malaysia sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce was held at the Ministry of Commerce this morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, heads of department, officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and guests. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan spoke on the occasion. Director-General of the Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye reported on salient points about the meeting. Those present discussed sector-wise matters and the deputy minister took part in the discussions.

Tailoring course of MMCWA opened

Yangon, 8 Oct- Concluding ceremony of tailoring course No 1/2001 for men's wear and No 18/2001 for women's wear and opening ceremony of course No 19/2001 for women's wear, organized by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, were held at the meeting hall of multi-purpose building of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road in South Okkalapa Township, Yangon, at 9 am today. It was attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, central executive committee members, the patrons of the Supervisory Committee, instructors and trainees.

First, Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe made a speech and presented certificates of tailoring course No 18/2001 to the trainees. Then, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented certificates to the trainees of tailoring course No 1/2001 and prizes to outstanding trainees Ma Khin Khin Kyi and Ma Tin Yu Hlaing. Afterwards, the trainees presented souvenirs for the domestic science school to Patron of supervisory committee Daw San San Myint and Central Executive Committee member Daw Khin Swe Nyunt. The trainees then spoke words of thanks. Altogether 49 trainees are attending the tailoring course No 19/2001 for women's wear.

Patron's Shield Women's football final held

Yangon, 8 Oct- The 4th Women's football final match and prize presentation ceremony of Women's Sport Committee Patron's Shield, 2001, Shan State (North) was held at State Stadium, Taunggyi Township at 3 pm on 6 October. It was attended by Shan State Women Sport Committee Patron Daw Khin Lay Myint and members, State/District/Township level departmental officials, members of Women Affairs Working Committee, guests, athletes and fans. In the final, Kalaw Township team beat Pekhon Township team with 3-1. Afterwards, Daw Khin Lay Myint, Patron of SSWSC, presented the Shield and additional Cup to Kalaw team, which stood first, and officials to the other prize-winning teams. Then, the ceremony came to an end.

( 9510 gem merchants arrive

Yangon, 8 Oct- A total of 510 gem merchants 250 from 92 companies of 9 countries and 260 from 88 local companies arrived here to attend the Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium at Myanma Gem Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road here. The merchants viewed the gems and jewellery on display at the emporium from 9 am to 5 pm today for the second day. They were briefed by Secretary of Myama Gems Emporium Central Committe Managing Director U Khin Oo of Myanma Gems Enterprise. More gem merchants will arrive here tomorrow and view the items at the emporium for the third day.

Health educative talk held

Yangon, 8 Oct- A health educative talk organised by Maternal and Child Welfare Association of Defence Services Record Office was held at the meeting hall of DSRO yesterday morning. It was attended by Yangon Station Commander and Commandant of DSRO Brig-Gen Myo Myint, Chairperson Dr Daw Thi Thi Aye of DSRO MCWA, Deputy Director U Aung Kyaw Kyaw and health staff of Central Education Unit of Health Planning Department, Ministry of Health, heads of departments, officers and their wives and family members of Tatmadawmen. First, Chairperson Dr Daw Thi Thi Aye made a speech. Deputy Director U Aung Kyaw Kyaw gave a talk on personal hygiene, water hygiene, toilet hygiene and food hygiene. Then, posters and phamplets were distributed before the talk came to a close.

Flights of Myanmar Airways to be extended

Yangon, 8 Oct- The Myanmar Airways will extend its domestic flights beginning 18 this month . Under the new flight extension programme, Fokker-27 aircraft of MA will fly from Toungoo to Heho, Loikaw, Monghsat, Namsang, Tachilek and Yangon; from Myitkyina to Bhamo and Putao; and from Mandalay to Bagan NyaungU, Bhamo, Heho, Kalay, Kengtung, Khanti, Magway, Myitkyina and Tachilek.

Entries invited for Colour Photo Competition

Yangon, 8 Oct- The Organizing Committee for National Motto, Literary and Photo Competitions has already announced that it is organizing the 12th Colour Photo Competition for 2001. The title of the competition is "The Pleasant Scenery in Our Country." The entries are to be 10 by 12 inches, and up to four prints can be sent. The data and caption about the entries are to be described. Also to be attached to the entries are the biography and two passport-size photos of the contestant. Entries must be own creation and must not be prize-winning works in other competitions at home and abroad. The entries are to be sent to U Tun Min, Joint Secretary of the Organizing Committee for National Motto, Literary and Photo Competitions, the Information and Public Relations Department, 22-24 Pansodan Street, Yangon, not latter than 15 October 2001. The winners of the competition will be announced in the first week of November, and deserving prizes will be presented.
