inspects rice warehouses
Yangon, 25 Sept - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone inspected rice warehouses in Shwenyaung in southern Shan State yesterday.
Accompanied by officials, the minister also inspected a rice warehouse in Taunggyi.
Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, who is also the Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and member of the Central Organizing
Committee of the Myanmar War Veterans Organization, met with war
veterans and members of the USDA at the Eastern Command. He urged
the two organizations to strive to stand on its own feet, to make
organizational plans at different levels and to make efforts to
uplift qualifications of the members.
Duties assigned to launch eye drop vaccine for Newcastle disease nationwide
Yangon, 25 Sept- A ceremony to assign duties to heads of States and Divisions to launch the second year I2 eye drop vaccine for Newcastle disease nationwide was held at Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (Head Office) in Insein Township this evening.
Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein said Head of State Senior General Than Shwe's guidance on promotion of rural development, poultry farming can be undertaken in a short time for livestock breeding development. Raising of sheep, goat and cattle is to be extended in the areas where the conditions permit.
The minister called for successful implementation of the tasks of launching I2 eye dropping vaccine for Newcastle disease in cooperation with the Union Solidarity and Development Association and regional authorities.
Director-General of Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department U Maung Maung Nyunt reported on arrangements for the task.
The minister then assigned duties to heads of States and Divisions
individually.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever control launched
Yangon, 25 Sept-Yangon Division dengue haemorrhagic fever control was launched with mass participation in Tamway Township this morning, attended by National Health Committee member Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Yangon City development Committee Chairman Mayor U Ko Lay.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo, the director-general, deputy directors-general, directors, officials, YCDC Vice-Chairman Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint Secretary U Kyi Win and members, officials concerned and local authorities.
At the office of the head of Township Administration Department, Head of YCDC Health Department Dr Daw Yee Yee Thein and Head of Township Health Department Dr Daw Khin Than Mya reported to the minister, the mayor and officials on outbreak of dengue haemorrhagic fever in Tamway Township in 2001, measures undertaken to control the fever, giving educative talks to the people in the Township and arrangements made with the use of charts.
The minister and the mayor gave instructions. Then, they inspected preventive measures against dengue haemorrhagic fever being carried out by YCDC Health Department, Township Health Department, Township Administration Department, members of USDA, MMCWA, Red Cross Brigade and Auxiliary Fire Brigade at 155th Street in Ka and Ga Wards, Tamway

( 6 ) Young Disabled Training School gets new school building
Yangon, 25 Sept- The handing over and opening ceremony of a new two-storey school building for Young Disabled Training School, built under Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme and with the permission of the Japanese government was held at the school on Mindhama Road in Mayangon Township this morning with an address by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.
The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win, the directors-general of Fire Services Department, Social Welfare Department and Relief and Resettlement Department, Japanese Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori
and officials of the embassy, officials of the Social Welfare
Department, donors, Headmistress of the school, teachers, parents
and invited guests.
In his address the minister said that the
Social Welfare Department is one which provides assistance to those
who face social problems; the department is rehabilitating the
disabled persons at special training schools; more disabled children
can get better opportunities for learning after the opening of the
new school building which can accept 100 children; with the
contributions of Japanese Government, people and the organizations,
two-storey computer hall is being built at a cost of US $ 79,000 at
the School for the Blind and the building and materials for
vocational training schools worth US $ 107,000 at the School for the
Deaf in Mandalay.
He thanked the Japanese Govenrnment and people, Japanese Ambassador and officials for the contribution to the school.
The Japanese Ambassador explained facts about the Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme of the Japanese Government, and handed over documents relating to the school to the minister.
The minister presented a gift to the Ambassador.
Wellwishers presented cash donations for the school to the minister, who presented certificates of honour to them.
Headmistress of the School Daw Sarah Win spoke words of thanks.

Shan State (South) USDA holds Annual General Meeting 2001
Yangon, 25 Sept - Shan State (South) Union Solidarity and Development Association held the Annual General Meeting 2001 at the Town Hall in Taunggyi this morning.
Present at the meeting were Patron of the Shan State (South) Union Solidarity and Development Association Chairman of the Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of the Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Central Executive Committee member of the USDA and In-charge of the Shan State (South) USDA Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Secretary of the Shan State (South) USDA U Nyan Lin and executives, USDA members and guests.
At the meeting, Secretary of the Shan State (South) USDA U Nyan Lin presented the association's accomplishments of the year.
Speaking on the occasion, Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo said the association should make systematic arrangements to increase the number of its members, to keep financial records and to extend closer relations with other non-governmental organizations and social organizations.
Next, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained the accomplishments of the USDA and its role in the nation-building tasks, urging the association members to actively partake in rural development undertakings, transport development tasks, clean water projects, agricultural and livestock breeding fields and the health and education sectors.
The meeting then presented gifts of honour to 15 outstanding students.

World Maritime Day 2001 observed in Yangon
Yangon, 25 Sept - World Maritime Day 2001 was observed at International Business Centre this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council ChairmanŐs Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, representatives of UNDP, UNDCP and WHO heads of department and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said the Myanmar seafarers continue to enjoy the trust and confidence of foreign shipowners and employers. Myanmar has amended Myanmar Merchant Shipping Act in accord with the conventions of the International Maritime Organization. The IMO confirmed that Myanmar was included in its IMO White List together with 95 member nations at the 74th Session of the Maritime Safety Committee.
Resident Representative of UNDP in Myanmar Mr Jean Iuc Lemahieu read out the message of the IMO General Secretary.
Novel, Short story and article competitions
to be held
Yangon, 25 Sept-The Literary and Photo Competitions Organizing Work Committee will hold Novel, Short Story and Article Competitions in commemoration of the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.
The competitors are to write novels and short stories in accordance with the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw. There is no title for the Novel and Short Story Competitions. The novel should be written within 50,000 and 70,000 words and short story, 4,000 and 10,000. The title for article competition is
"Our Three Main National Causes" and to be written within 3,000 and 5,000 words.
Two copies of the entry must be sent together with a brief biography of the competitor and two 1.5 x by 2 inches colour photos. The entry must be own creation of the competitor. Every competitor can submit one entry each to all competitions and the first, second, third and special prizes will be presented to winners.
Those who have not won prizes will get more chances, for the first, second and third prize winners of the previous competitions are categorized as a separate group. Yangon, 25 Sept-Chairman of Lashio District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Soe Win and Managing Director U Aung Aung of Dragon Exhibitions Ltd formally opened the Lashio Consumer Products Expo 2001, organized by Dragon Exhibitions Ltd with the permission of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council, at City Hall in Lashio on 19 September.

London Myanmar PGA c'ship 26-29 Sept
Yangon, 25 Sept - Maj Aung Soe (MCDC) while playing together with U Tin Oo (MCDC), U Hla Myint Swe (Customs), U Tun Kyi (MCDC) and U Maung Htay (MCDC) scored an ace at Yetagon Taung-bauk Golf Club today.
London Myanmar PGA championship will be held at the golf club from 26 to 29 September. The tourney will be held under the sponsorship of Myanmar Professional Golfer's Association and Asian Professional Golfer's Association and assistance of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd. Sixty eight local and foreign professional golfers will take part in the tourney.

Mayor honours gold medalists in XXI SEA Games
Yangon, 25 Sept-The athletes from the Yangon City Development Committee, who won prizes at the XXI SEA Games, were honoured at the hall on first floor of the City Hall here this morning.
Chairman of the YCDC Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay attended the ceremony and presented cash to the athletes.
Also present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of the YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win and committee members, members of the Central Sports Committee and the chairmen and secretaries of the Sports Sub-committees and prize-winners.
Chairman of Central Sports Committee Head of Administration Department U Myint Swe introduced athletes to the mayor.
Then, the mayor delivered a speech. He said; the YCDC is striving for the progress of sports standard of the State and the Myanmar athletes won altogether 19 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 53 bronze medals. He said out of 50 athletes from the YCDC 35 athletes won seven gold, two silver and 32 bronze in the SEA Games and he is proud of them. He also urged the athletes and the coaches of the sports that did not fetch prizes to try hard to win medals; and he also urged those who won prizes to try harder for more prizes and not to be complacent with the success already gained.
The YCDC places emphasis on sport sector and organizing and nurturing of new generation youths must be done for the coming games, he pointed out. Then, the mayor, the vice-mayor and the secretary presented K 2.5 million each to gold medal winner and one million each to those who won gold medal in group sport events of the SEA Games, and 500,000 each to silver medal winners and K 300,000 each to bronze medal winners from the YCDC. On behalf of the victorious athletes of the YCDC, Maung Pyae Wai Phyo who won a gold and a bronze in Wushu events spoke words of
thanks.
