Yangon, 24 Aug- Madame Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Soekarnoputri was born on 23 January 1947 at Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She was educated in various institutions in Cikini, Jakarta, Indonesia from 1959 until graduating from high school in 1965. She then studied in the Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University in Bandung, Indonesia, from 1965 to 67 and later in the Faculty of Psychological Department, University of Indonesia, Jakarta from 1971 to 1972.
From 1988 to 1998 she was a member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, and also a member of Foreign and Inter Parliamentary Commission. From 1993 to 1998 she was Chairperson of PDI (Indonesian Democratic Party) and since 1998 she has been Chairperson of PDI-P (Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle). She was elected as the Vice-President of the Republic of Indonesia in October 1999. On 23 July 2001, she was elected as the fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia.
She is married to Mr Taufiq Kiemas in 1973. She has three children.

Provisions donated to two monasteries in Yangon
Yangon, 23 Aug- The Tatmadaw members of Army, Navy and Air Force and families presented provisions to the Mingalayama Pali Tekkatho Monastery in Botahtaung Township at 3 pm today.
Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint attended the ceremony which was held at the monastery.

Minister inspects construction tasks in Bago Division
Yangon, 23 Aug- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with officials, left Magway for Pyay where Superintending Engineer of Bago Division U Kyaw Lwin and officials welcomed him and reported on works done and future tasks of Magway-Pyay Road yesterday.
The minister gave instructions on preventive measures for open season and preparation of construction materials and machinery, and attended to the needs.
Then, the minister arrived at the worksite of Road Construction Special Group-15 and heard the reports on maintenance tasks for Pyay-Yangon Road by In-Charge Engineer U Aung Htay and officials.
The minister gave instructions to the officials and left for Yangon.
Minister inspects Nyaungdon oil and gas field
Yangon, 23 Aug- Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi arrived at Nyaungdon Oil and Natural Gas field in Nyaungdon Township in Ayeyawady Division where he was welcomed by officials yesterday.
At the meeting room of the field, Director (Exploration) U San Lwin of the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise reported on production, geographical condition of the region and prospect of production to the minister. Managing Director U Kyaw Nyein and Director (Production) U Tin Win presented supplementary reports.
The minister gave instructions and inspected condensation and distribution of gas.
He also inspected chosen site for skid mounted LPG Plant at the South-West of the field near Chaungphya Village.
Border trade development tasks carried out
Yangon, 23 Aug- The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone went to Thailand at the invitation of the Minister of Trade Dr Adisai Bodharamik of Thailand, and discussed matters related to border trade development tasks between the two countries with the Thai delegation led by Minister Dr Adisai Bodharamik on 20 August.
The Myanmar delegation also attended the ceremony to present Outstanding Prize for Export held at the State House in Thailand and met Thai Prime Minister Dr Thaksin Shinnawatra. In the afternoon, the delegates viewed the exports booth of private entrepreneurs organized by the Department of Export Promotion.
The Myanmar minister visited the Rice Land International Co Ltd, Bran Oil Factory and Rice Mill Production Factory of the Rice Engineering Supply Co Ltd in Ayudhaya on 21 August.
At 5 pm, the two ministers from Myanmar and Thailand signed agreement discussed by the delegates form the two countries.

( 5 ) 92.1% of school age children enter schools in 2001-2002
Talented Students Training Programme launched
Yangon, 23 Aug- A ceremony to launch Talented Students Training Programme for high school level of 2001-2002 academic year was held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this morning.
It was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, deputy ministers of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science and Technology, directors-general of departments and comissions, deputy directors-general and officials, rectors, pro-rectors, professors, associate professors, township education officers and headmasters of basic education schools in Yangon Division, teachers and outstanding students of high schools.
First, the ceremony was opened by the song "Myanma
School" by students. Then, the Minister for Education made a speech. He said; tasks for education promotion, according to education promotion programmes, have been implemented since 1998-99 academic year by holding seminars in basic and higher education sectors. Tasks for enabling students of school going age to go to school, one of the fundamental and important tasks of education, have been implemented since three years ago in collaboration with parents, non-governmental organizations and departments.
As a result, the rate of schooling of the children of school going age has increased up to 92.1 percent in 2001-2002 academic year.
Talented Students Training Programme launched today is one of the endeavours made for promotion of education sector. Objectives of the programme are to nurture outstanding scholars in subjects concerned, to make use of technology developed in line with the age, to widen and deepen the scope of studies, innovation by collective study of the subjects, to nurture good education habits of being able to see new areas of study, to nurture students to be willing to do research starting from their childhood and to preserve and uphold national standards and values. It is also a programme in advance to enable the students to keep abreast of present education era.
According to the programme, professors and associate professors concerned will give supplementary lectures on one of English, Mathematics, Science and Information and Communication subjects. Altogether 540 ninth standard students and 540 tenth standard students will be taught at 38 basic education high schools in Myitkyina, Monywa, Magway, Pakokku, Mandalay, Meiktila, Taunggyi, Dawei, Toungoo, Pyay, Mawlamyine, Sittway, Yan-gon and Pathein based in the areas where universities are located. Scholarship will be given to those who take the respective major subjects at arts and science universities after matriculation till they earn Ph D degrees.
The aims and objectives of the programme launched now is very high. The outstanding students from States and Divisions need to understand that getting the chance to join this programme is the chance of a lifetime in education history.
In conclusion, the minister urged the students to make efforts to become outstanding and innovative scholars who cherish the people and the nation and highly qualified human resources.
Altogether, 90 ninth standard students and 90 tenth standard students will attend the courses at Training School of the Institute of Education, No 1 Basic Education High School in Dagon Township and No 2 Basic Education High School in Kamayut Township in Yangon
Division.
Minister Brig-Gen Thein Zaw tours Ayeyawady Division
Yangon, 23 Aug- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw inspected communication stations in Ayeyawady Division on 21 and 22 August. On 21 August, the minister arrived at Pantanaw and Kyaunggon and inspected the Post Office, Telegraph Office and Exchange Station and gave instructions.
On 22 August, the minister arrived at Chaungtha and attended the opening ceremony of Chaungtha Auto Exchange System. Then, the minister inspected the installation of equipment in Chaungtha Exchange.
Afterwards, the minister proceeded to Myanma Communication Services in Pathein where Division Manager reported on the conditions of the communication services to the minister.

HR development tasks inspected
Yangon, 23 Aug- Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein accompanied by Director-General Prof Dr Maung Maung Wint of the Medical Science Department and officials inspected human resources development tasks of the Institute of Medicine-1 on Pyay Road here this morning.
The minister inspected the chosen site for a new building, lecture room, reading room, and practical room for anatomy, and attended to the needs, He also inspected practical rooms of Physics and Chemistry departments and gave instructions on preparation for enough using of teaching aids. Then, he inspected extended teaching centres on Thaton Street and attended to the requirements.
Afterwards, he heard the reports of officials at the construction site of the Institute of Pharmacy and gave instructions. He fulfilled the requirements and inspected the building, office and department of the
institute.

Two high schools in eastern Shan State get
multimedia teaching centres
Yangon, 23 Aug- Yaksawk Township Basic Education High School in southern Shan State opened a multimedia teaching centre on 20 August.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Brig-Gen Htin Aung Kyaw of Bahtoo Station, Brig-Gen Kyaw Thu, senior military officers, departmental personnel, members of social organizations, education staff, students, members of the school board of trustees and students.
Headmistress Daw Nu Kyi and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Sein Maung formally opened the centre.
Accompanied by officials, commander looked around the centre. After looking into the requirements of the school, he presented two sets computer donated by Shan State Peace and Development Council and a set computer donated by Eastern Command for the centre.
The commander and party then attended the ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of Bahtoo Tatmyo Basic Education High School. He formally opened the centre.
Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Than Maung explained the functions of the centre.
The commander gave suggestions.
Afterwards, the commander attended the ceremony to mark the completion of monsoon paddy ploughing in Yaksawk Township.
The ceremony was held in Alechaung village.
After hearing the reports presented by officials, the commander presented gifts to the persons for their outstanding achievements.
The township put 28,599 acres of land under monsoon paddy this season, exceeding the target of 27,736 acres.
The ceremony to mark the completion of monsoon paddy ploughing season in Taunggyi Township was also held at Taungni
Village. The township cultivated 26,724 acres of monsoon paddy this
year exceeding the target of 22,693 acres.
Myeik District USDA holds annual meeting
Yangon, 23 Aug- The annual meeting of the Myeik District Union Solidarity and Development Association for 2001 was held at Plae Yadana hall in Myeik on 19 August morning, attended by Patron of the Taninthayi Division Union Solidarity and Development Association Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Aye Kyway.
Also present on the occasion were Patron of the Taninthayi Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association wife of the commander Daw Khin Khin Win, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Latt and senior military officers, Secretary of Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Nyo and departmental heads, members of USDA, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, War Veterans Organization.
Commander Maj-Gen Aye Kyway delivered a speech.
The commander and his wife presented prizes to the outstanding students and trainees in the district.

Taekwondo Tourney concludes
Yangon, 23 Aug- The Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air Force) Taekwondo championship matches concluded at the Kachin State People's Stadium in Myitkyina on 21 August morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and wife Daw San San Yi, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Tun, senior military officers and others.
The commander and wife, the deputy commander and officials presented prizes to the winners. No 11 Light Infantry Division won the championship Trophy, Yangon Command was the runner-up and South-West Command won the third prize.

Yangon, 23 Aug- Chairman of Yangon City Deve-lopment Committee Mayor
U Ko Lay accompanied by officials, inspected agriculture and livestock breeding tasks in Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi Township this morning.
The mayor and party inspected the raising of fish and condition of hatching ponds near Shwewatun Hall of the region and gave instructions on distribution of fingerlings to the fish and prawn breeding projects of the YCDC, extended breeding and timely transportation of fingerlings.
The mayor also inspected the plantations and gave instructions.
He then inspected transportation of paddy from plantations after being harvested, drying of paddy and milling of paddy at 25-ton mill, production of oil and sugar at the mills and paddy husk briquette and left
there.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister arrives
Yangon, 23 Aug- A Chinese goodwill delegation led by Vice Foreign Minister Mr Wang Yi of the People's Republic of China arrived here at 7.45 pm today.

Yangon Consumer Products Expo 2001 opens
Yangon, 23 Aug- The opening ceremony of Yangon Consumer Products Expo 2001, arranged by Dragon Exhibition Ltd with the permission of the Ministry of Commerce, was held at Yangon Trade Centre on Lower Pazundaung Road in Mingala Taungnyunt Township, here, this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, heads of departments, Managing Director U Aung Aung and officials of Dragon Exhibition Ltd and officials of the expo.

Myanmar ASEAN Women's
Friendship Association inaugurated
Yangon, 23 Aug- Opening ceremony of the Myanmar ASEAN Women's Friendship Association was held at Wunzin Minyarzar Hall of Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.
Present on the occasion were Association's Chief Patron Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of the State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1, members of the Board of Patrons; Daw San Yone, wife of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Daw Khin Swe Soe, wife of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, the lady Heads of Missions and spouses of Heads of Missions in Yangon, the Executive Committee members and ladies from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The aims and purposes of the Association are to promote understanding, cooperation and friendship among ladies of the ASEAN community in the host country. It will also promote awareness of ASEAN, greater interaction among the people of ASEAN as well as its wider participation in ASEAN activities. The association also hopes to encourage cultural and social exchanges among various members. The MAWFA will be led by the Chief Patron, wife of the State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1. The wife of Foreign Minister and the wife of Deputy Foreign Minister as Members of the Board of Patrons.
The wives of Ambassadors of the ASEAN Countries shall form part of Executive Committee together with the wives of the Directors-General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "Legacy of Bagan" Exhibition crowded
Yangon, 23 Aug- "The Legacy of Bagan" exhibition, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, was opened daily at the National Museum on Pyay Road from 10 am to 4 pm.
From 15 August to date, altogether over ten thousand people including tourists viewed the exhibition. Director Daw Sanda Khin of the Department of Archaeology explained the purpose of the exhibition, specific artisitc works in the pagodas of Bagan region, wall paintings and the exhibition to the
visitors.
94 manuscripts

U Ohn Pe Award
Yangon, 23 Aug- The Fund Supervisory Committee of the Pakokku U Ohn Pe
Literary Award organized by the Ministry of Information has invited
manuscripts for 2001. This year, the committee has accepted 94
manuscripts for 5 categories Ñ novel, collected short stories,
collected poems, treatise and research. The Scrutinizing Committee
is discharging duties to be able to present prizes at the start of
the year 2002.

) Drug trafficker sentenced
Yangon, 23 Aug- Members of local intelligence unit and Mandalay Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, stopped and searched the Hilux (Bha/9219) going from Taunggyi to Meiktila, and arrested passenger Zaw Thein together with 490 grams of opium found in his belt on 23 November. The Yinmabin police station filed Zaw Thein, 42, of Chaunggya Ward in Yanangyoung under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Meiktila District court handed down five
years' imprisonment under Section 15 and life imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on him on 18
July.
161.37 kilos of opium seized
in Monywa
Yangon, 23 Aug- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched a Hilux of Chindwin Bus Line with number plate Da/8703, going from Monywa to Mandalay, driven by Myint Lwin of Chanmyathazi Ward in Monywa and accompanied by conductors Myint Swe of Chanmyathazi Ward and Hla Shwe of Ayethaya Ward in Monywa, and found 161.37 kilos of opium at the check-point in Monywa on 4 August.
Action is being taken against them under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station
concerned.
