In his address, the Secretary-1 said that the State Peace and Development Council is implementing plans systematically for the rapid improvement of national economy and modernization and development of the nation. It is also making efforts for the harmonious development of economic sectors on the basis of the agriculture sector, the basic economic undertaking of the State. The agriculture sector plays an important role in national economy. It also serves as the livelihood of the majority of the population, and it improves the economic and social standard of the people. Therefore, the government is employing various ways and means for the rapid development of the agriculture sector.

It is upgrading the conventional agricultural methods of farmers with the use of new agricultural methods, modern agricultural equipment and strains of high quality. At the same time, the government is giving encouragement and assistance to national entrepreneurs who are in a position to reclaim and cultivate lands by using investment, modern agricultural methods and modern farm machinery. Therefore, the performance of the agriculture sector of the nation is successful to such an extent that national economic plans have been accomplished. In view of the performance of the agriculture sector in Ayeyawady Division, the acres of monsoon paddy and summer paddy constitute 28 per cent and 6.2 per cent of total acres of monsoon paddy and summer paddy of the nation respectively.

The acres of beans and peas also account for 19.38 per cent of the total acres of beans and peas of the nation. Similarly, the performance of the livestock breeding sector constitutes 20.4 per cent of the total performance of the livestock breeding sector of the entire nation. It is evident that the success of the agriculture sector and the livestock breeding of Ayeyawady Division contributes to the development of the production sector of the State as well as Ayeyawady Division. Today, in accord with the farsighted guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, the entire people are making concerted efforts for the development of the food production sector in proportion to the future population of the State and for the harmonious development of the agriculture sector, the livestock breeding sector, the forestry sector and the commercial sector which can promote the development of national economy.

At that time, in Aye-yawady Division, honorary awards are presented for excellent performance in the agriculture sector, the livestock breeding sector, the forestry sector and the commercial sector. The presentation of these awards is very appropriate to the present time and can bolster the morale of the people to boost production. Ayeyawady Division is rich in national resources, and due to efforts of local people and favourable foundations built by the government, Ayeyawady Division is making considerable progress. In Ayeyawady Division full of creeks and rivers, the government is building bridges, big and small, including Bo Myat Tun Bridge as well as tarred and gravelled roads. As a result, the transport condition is improving and the economic sector is also picking up.

Offshore fisheries industry and prawn and fish breeding work are also improving at a great pace. For the development of the agriculture sector of Ayeyawady Division, Kun-chaung-2 Dam, in addition to Nankathu Dam, is being built. Plans are afoot to build Mamya Creek Dam. Therefore, more efforts are to be made to accelerate the growth rate of Ayeyawady Division and to improve the economic condition of the region and the standard of living of local people. Those who have won awards are required to strive for more development of the agriculture, livestock breeding and economic sectors and progress of the region. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged local authorities, departmental officials and local people to cooperate in striving for the development of the education, health, and social sectors as well as the agriculture, livestock breeding and economic sectors of the region to ensure that reliance can be put on Ayeyawady Division for the economic improvement of the nation.

The Commander said the Division Peace and Development Council is making efforts for boosting production in accord with four strategies. Cultivation of acreage has increased by 0.416 million acre up to 2000-2001. Total crop cultivation of acreage was 6.166 million acres in 1997-98 and increased up to 7.251 million acres in 2000-2001. He dwelt on double and mixed cropping in the division.

He said Ayeyawady Division was termed as granary of the State, rice bowl of the State and now it can also be called the curry bowl. With the combination of land and marine resources in the division and human resources, breeding of fish and prawn was extended with the guidance of high-ranking officials of the State. Progress was made in the division due to the efforts of regional authorities at different levels in implementation of the correct guidance of the Head of State, cooperation of the national entrepreneurs and local people.

During Head of State Senior General Than Shwe's recent inspection tour of Ayeyawady Division, he said the division has plenty of resources and prospects for development. Progress will not come automatically. Only when natural resources and manpower are combined will the nation develop. The Senior General spoke of the need for all to work hard.
