( 1 ) Management Committee for Development of Tourism Industry holds meeting No 2/2001

Yangon, 13 Aug- Chairman of the Management Committee for Development of Tourism Industry Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt addressed the meeting No 2/2001 of the Management Committee for Development of Tourism Industry at the Strand Hotel this afternoon.

Also present were members of the Management Committee, the ministers, the Mayor of Mandalay, the deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and officials of subcommittees. In his address, the Secretary-1 said that to promote the development of tourism industry in Myanmar, the Management Committee for Development of Tourism Industry was formed in 1996, and efforts have been made to promote the development of tourism industry. Myanmar is endowed with beautiful landscape, covered with forests and full of paddy fields.

As natural beauty of Myanmar is kept intact, the geographical feature is lush and green. There are a lot of national races who preserve their culture and traditions, and ancient cultural edifices have been preserved. In addition, there are beautiful vast coastal regions, snow-capped mountains and gems lands. Therefore, Myanmar has favourable conditions which contribute to development of tourism industry. However, due to the currency crisis in South-East Asia in 1997, news agencies of the West bloc and misinformation spread by those who fled abroad after violating the law and are against Myanmar, the development of tourism industry in Myanmar fell short of expectations. Today, peace prevails in the nation, and the correct news about Myanmar has got known to the world.

The tourism industry in Myanmar is picking up. Those who visited Myan-mar have known the correct news and the objective condition of the nation, and the Ministry of Information is broadcasting new programmes. At a time when news about stability and peace and tranquillity of Myanmar and hospitality and goodwill of Myanmar people is spreading to other nations, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism needs to cooperate with other ministries in striving to promote the development of tourism industry.

Then, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin reported on the arrival of tourists coming into Myanmar through Yangon entrance, Mandalay entrance, border entrances or by sea, hotel businesses run with foreign investment, new projects to be implemented, local hotel businesses, efforts for the development of tourism industry, participation in international tourism exhibitions and Myanmar's participation in the tourism industry of ASEAN member nations and future tasks. Then, the chairmen and officials of various subcommittees took part in the discussions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Secretary-1.

Secretary-1 attends coordination meeting on trial-run of MRTV-3

Yangon, 13 Aug- A coordination meeting on trial-run of MRTV-3 was held at the Myanma Radio and Television this evening, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were the ministers, the Yangon Mayor, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the director-general of MRTV and officials. Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay reported on trial-run of MRTV-3, programmes to be broadcast, news and other programmes, installation of equipment and requirements. Chief Engineer of MRTV U Tin Wan reported on transmission of MRTV-3 programmes and technical matters.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung reported on installation of equipment, trial-run of MRTV-3, the opening of working efficiency promoting courses, production of programmes, preparatory work and requirements. Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, U Win Aung, U Saw Tun, U Tin Winn and U Khin Maung Thein and Mayor U Ko Lay and those present took part in the discussions. The Secretary-1 fulfilled the requirements and gave instructions on production of programmes reflecting the true situation in Myanmar with the aim of getting true news about Myanmar known to the international community.

They cordially discussed matters related to energy sector. ( 3 ) Workshop on drawing of curriculum for University of Traditional Medicine opens

Yangon, 13 Aug- In accordance with the aim of upgrading the Institute of Traditional Medicine to a university by 2002 to uplifting the standard of traditional medicine, the Traditional Medicine Department of the Ministry of Health opened a workshop on the drawing of curriculum for the University of Traditional Medicine at the meeting hall of Traditional Hospital on Ngahtatgyi Pagoda Road in Bahan Township this morning. It was attended by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo, directors-general of departments under the ministry, deputy directors-general, rectors, physicians of the Traditional Medicine Council, directors, professors, lecturers, medical superintendents and guests.

First, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein delivered a speech. He said the objective of holding the workshop on drawing of curriculum for University of Traditional Medicine is to make a discussion between experts and physicians of the Traditional Medicine Council for successful opening of the university which is one of the objectives of special four-year plan for uplift of national education. One of the 15 strategies of national health is " To encourage endeavours in traditional medicine and uplift of research work to international standard and to take part in public health care work."

The Head of State himself is giving guidance uninterruptedly for development of traditional medicine. Moreover, National Health Committee has laid down necessary strategies for the development of traditional medicine. The departments under the Ministry of Health are collectively endeavouring for successful implementation of the strategies laid down by National Health Committee and guidance of the Head of State. Human resources development is an important factor in building peaceful modern developed country. Upgrading of the existing Institute of Traditional Medicine to a university will help develop human resources and quality of treatment. Development of traditional medicine plays an important role among the projects being implemented by the ministry.

Opening of University of Traditional Medicine is one of important objectives of the projects. At the present, Department of Traditional Medicine is opening courses on primary health care with the use of traditional medicine not only for wide use of traditional medicine among the people but also for development of traditional medicine. The courses are the courses on the primary health care with the use of traditional medicine for Tatmadaw men opened in collaboration with Ministry of Defence, those in townships opened in collaboration with Union Solidarity and Development Association, those for housewifes opened in collaboration with Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and those opened in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme.

In this workshop, physicians of the Traditional Medicine Council and experienced experts of the departments under the ministry will collectively discuss curriculum, set-up and schedules for opening of the university. Department of Traditional Medicine will carry out tasks adopting the results of the discussions as future plans. In conclusion, he urged the participants to take part in the discussions to the best of their ability and make concerted efforts for successful implementation of the objectives of the workshop and for timely opening of the university. The workshop will continue till 15 August.

 Myanmar Academy of Medical Science holds biannual meeting for 2001

YANGON, 13 Aug -Myanmar Academy of Medical Science held its biannual meeting for 2001 at the Institute of Nursing yesterday morning.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein addressed the meeting. Also present were Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, directors-general, deputy directors-general, rectors of institutes of medicines, Myanmar Ambassador to Britain Dr Kyaw Win, Rector of Defence Services Institute of Medicine Brig-Gen Hla Myint, directors of the Department of Traditional Medicine, medical superintendents, chairmen of social organizations and guests.

In his address, the minister said that Myanmar Academy of Medical Science was formed with 208 members on 20 August l999 in accord with the guidance of the Head of State. An executive committee with 13 members of the medical profession was also formed, and three directors-general of the Ministry of Health were appointed as secretaries of the executive committee. It is encouraging to learn the tasks carried out by the academy. Myanmar Academy of Medical Science held a talk on the blood bank, a talk on aged persons, a talk on tobacco and health, and a talk on oral health, and submitted reports concerning these talks.

The academy is participating in implementing the special four-year education promotion plan (the health sector) in accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe. It is also taking part in drawing a five-year plan for 2001-2006. Out of the members of the, academy, 112 are participating in formulating the 30-year health plan (Vision 2030). Out of 96 retired persons form the academy, 33 are working at institutes of medicine, including Defence Services Institute of Medicine, other training schools and hospitals.

Coordination work is being carried out to enlist the cooperation of non-governmental organizations. As the population of the nation has reached over 50 million; the government is paying equal attention to treatment and prevention tasks. The government alone cannot carry out the tasks for health care and prevention of diseases. Social organizations and private enterprises concerning health care are required to take part in these tasks. The Ministry of Health has formed health care associations. Now the National Kidney Foundation and the Cardiac and Vein Foundation have been formed.

Myanmar Red Cross Society is now carrying out tasks designed to improve health standard and prevent diseases. Plans are afoot to give life skill training for prevention of HIV/AIDS to 8,000 youths from 20 townships this year. Arrangements are also being made to set up three Friendly Youth Centres in Myitkyina, Lashio and Kawthoung. At the centre, computer courses will
be given, sports equipment and video cassette players kept. Then, the meeting continued. Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo chaired the meeting and extended greetings.

Professor Dr Myint Myint Khin made an introductory speech. Director-General (Retired) of the Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar) Dr U Mya Tu discussed the codes of conduct and medical ethics with audiovisual aids. Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein presented an honorary medal to Professor Dr U Mya Tu. Chairman of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science Dr U Ko Ko submitted the report of the executive committee.
 

Communications and Postal Training Centre opens courses

Yangon, 13 Aug- A ceremony to open Introduction to Internet Course, TMX-100 Operation and Maintenance Course, Facsimile Operator Training Course and Postmaster Course was held at the Communications and Postal Training Centre this morning. Present were Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, officials, the principal of the training centre and course instructors. The minister spoke on the occasion. The minister then inspected the giving of lectures at the training halls where 60 trainees are attending. He later inspected temporary storage of auto exchange equipment delivered by Shanghai Bell of the People's Republic of China at the training centre for extension of digital exchange system in Yangon, Mandalay and Pyay.

Job Training Course No 22 for Heads of Township Revenue Department concludes

Yangon, 13 Aug- Job Training Course No 22 for Heads of Township Revenue Department of the Internal Revenue Department of the Ministry of the Finance and Revenue concluded at the training hall of the Internal Revenue Department with an address by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein. Also present were Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Director-General of the Internal Revenue Department U Chit Swe, heads of department, course instructors and 59 trainees. The minister made an address. Director-General U Chit Swe presented prizes to trainees who stood first, second and third at the course. The course lasted for three weeks.

 Ploughing work for monsoon paddy completed in Yangon Division

Yangon, 13 Aug- A ceremony to mark the completion of ploughing work for cultivation of monsoon paddy and a transplanting skill competition were held at Wanetkon Village in Hlegu Township this morning, attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

Also present on the occasion were Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than, member of YCDC Col Thaung Wai, Commander of Indaing Station, Col Hsan Aung, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and members, departmental officials, chairmen of district and township Peace and Development Councils, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, entrepreneurs, farmers, transplanters and local people. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke on the occasion. Chief Judge, of the Competition Head of Yangon Division Settlement and Land Records Department U Naing Win, explained the rules and regulations.

The commander inspected the transplanting skill competition. The commander and party inspected booths on Myanma Agriculture Service, Irrigation Department, Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, Fisheries Department, Water Resources Utilization Department, farm equipment, health, education, YCDC, Forest Department, species, fertilizer and pesticides. The chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils presented reports on completion of ploughing work for 2001-2002 to the commander.

The commander and officials presented prizes to townships in Yangon Division, companies and Ministry of Home Affairs for outstanding performance in cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, beans and pulses and oil crops, sale of paddy and the extending of agricultural loans. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, member of YCDC Col Thaung Wai, Managing Director of MAS U Tun Than and officials and farm equipment companies presented gifts to the winning teams. The commander presented certificates of honour to the companies. Out of 1,180,000 targeted acres of monsoon paddy for 2000-2001, a total of 1,152,000 acres has been cultivated in the rainy season. Ploughing work has been completed by 97.63 per cent.

 Commander inspects vegetable and poultry farming special zone

YANGON, 13, Aug- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected the vegetable production and poultry farming special zone of Yangon Division near Nyaunghnapin Village, Hmawby Township, Yangon North District, yesterday afternoon.

The commander in spected Taingmyankyaw Poultry Farm in the special zone-l at 3 pm, and gave instructions on the breeding of poultry and cultivation of vegetables around the farm. The commander went to Hmawby Hsan Hall in the special zone-1.

Deputy Commissioner of Yangon North District General Administration Department U Saw Hla Myint reported on land preparation work in the special zone-2, cultivation of vegetables and the poultry farming; Deputy Head of Yangon Division Land Records Department U Kyin Tun on land preparation work in the special zone- 3, the growing of vegetables and poultry farming; members of the special zone supervisory committee on cultivation of vegetables and livestock breeding work; and Director of Yangon Division Forest Department U Ko Ko on the growing of shady trees.

The commander gave instructions. Then, the commander inspected cultivation of vegetables in the special zone-1 and the special zone-2 and gave instructions.The commander left the special zone in the evening. In the vegetable production and poultry farming special zone, over 2,300 acres of land are under cultivation, and a total of 123,180 hens are being raised. Fish ponds have been dug on over 300 acres of land. During the rainy season, over 39,000 trees have been planted on both sides of roads in the special zone.
 

MWVO provides cash assistance to war veterans in Shan State (East)

Yangon, 13 Aug- A ceremony to present cash assistance to war veterans aged 75 and above and disabled war veterans by the Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee was held at the Sibinthayar hall in Kengtung Township this morning. Present were Patron of the Shan State (East) War Veterans Organization member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council (East) Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe, USDA executives, members of Women's Affairs Work Committee, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Society, members of WVO and invited guests. Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein spoke on the occasion.

The commander and member of MWVO Central Organizing Committee and Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone presented K 2.8 million to 52 war veterans. On their behalf, Captain Thein Htwe (Retd) spoke words of thanks. Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe and Secretary of Shan State Peace and Development Council (East) Lt-Col Aung Soe presented cash assistance to students of members of the WVO for the third time.

Billboard hailing annual general meeting of USDA erected in Lashio

Yangon, 13 Aug- A ceremony to erect billboard hailing the annual general meeting (2001) of the Union Solidarity and Development Association was held in front of the City Hall of Lashio on 11 August attended by Patron of Shan State (North) USDA Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo. It was also attended by CEC member of USDA Col Tin Hlaing, senior officers of the command, local authorities, officials and members of Shan State (North) USDA, members of social organizations and War Veterans Organization, teachers, students and local people. The commander formally unveiled the billboard.

Shan State (North) USDA holds annual meeting

Yangon, 13 Aug- Patron of the Shan State (North) War Veterans Organization member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing attended the annual general meeting for 2001 of Shan State (North) USDA held at the City Hall in Lashio on 11 August.

Also present on the occasion were senior military officers of the command, members of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, the secretary and executives of Shan State (North) USDA, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils, secretaries and executives of district/township USDAs, members of social organizations, and guests. The Commander and the Minister delivered addresses at the meeting. Secretary of Shan State (North) USDA U Aye Thaung read out the annual report of the association, and secretaries from Lashio, Muse, Kyaukme, Kunlong and Laukkai District USDAs read out their annual reports. Then, Commander presented prizes to 12 outstanding member students in the Shan State who passed the 2001 matriculation exam. Altogether 12,133 membership applications were presented to Secretary U Aye Thaung. The Minister accepted cash donation for the association and the meeting came to a close.

CEC member inspects Wanpon Check Point

Yangon, 13 Aug- Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association member of the Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, together with Tactical Operations Commander Col Than Shein, Director-General of the Border Trade Department U Nay Win, Chairman of Tachilek District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Myo Myint and officials, went to Wanpon Port in Tachilek District, on 11 August morning.

The minister inspected the site chosen for Wanpon region development project at Wapon Check Point of the Border Trade Department. The minister and party went to Mongphyat through Tachilek in the afternoon. The minister met with secretaries, organizers and members of District and Township USDAs, and members of the Organizing Committee of Mongphyat War Veterans Organization in the hall in Mongphyat at night. Also present were Brig-Gen Than Aung of Mongphyat Station, Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Htay, township authorities and departmental officials. CEC member Brig-Gen Pyi Sone also met with the secretaries and executives of Shan State and District USDAs at the office of the association in Kengtung. The CEC member gave instructions on matters related to the association.

( 6 ) Laotian guests conclude visit

Yangon, 13 Aug- The Laotian goodwill delegation led by Chairman of Champasak Province of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Oneneua Phommachanh and party, who visited here at the invitation of Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, left for home this morning. Mayor U Ko Lay, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win, committee members and staff of the Embassy of the Laos saw the guests off at the airport. The delegation visited famous pagodas in Yangon and Mandalay. They also visited Bagan, and industrial zones in Yangon and Mandalay.

YCDC offers Waso robes

Yangon, 13 Aug- The third Waso-robe offering ceremony of the Dhammaakka Wut Association of the Yangon City Development Committee was held at the Dhammayon of the committee on Shwedagon Pagoda Road in Dagon Township here this morning, attended by Mayor U Ko Lay and wife Daw Khin Khin. Members of the Sangha led by Vice-President Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kawindhatara and member of the YCDC Col Tin Soe and heads of departments, deputy heads and members of the YCDC Dhammaakka Wut Association. The Vice-President Saya-daw administered the Five Precepts and members of the Sangha recited parittas. Then, the Mayor, his wife and the congregation offered Waso robes and offertories to the Sayadaws, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Malaysian delegation visits Sagaing and Mandalay

Yangon, 13 Aug- The Malaysian goodwill delegation led by General Secretary of UMNO Party, Malaysia, and Minister of Information Mr YB Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Dr Chan Nyein, arrived at the Mandalay International Airport on 11 August morning. They were welcomed there by Secretary of Mandalay Division Union Solidarity and Development Association U Tin Maung Oo and executives. The delegation visited the University for Development of National Races in Sagaing Division.

Then, the delegation visited the Myanansankyaw Golden Palace in Mandalay. Patron of Mandalay Division USDA Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint hosted dinner in honour of the guests. The delegation left Mandalay and arrived at the Heho Airport, where they were welcomed by Secretary of Shan State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Maung, Secretary of Shan State (South) USDA U Nyan Lynn and secretaries, executives and members of district and township USDAs yesterday. Later, they called on Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of the Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo at the hall of the command. The commander hosted dinner in their honour at Thanlwin hall of the command.

Yangon, 13 Aug- A Malaysian delegation led by General Secretary of UMNO Party, Malaysia, and Minister for Information Mr YB Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Dr Chan Nyein, Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Mohammed Bin Noh visited the National Museum on Pyay Road this afternoon. They were welcomed there by Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Institute U Than Win, Curator Daw Mi Mi Thet Nwe and officials. The officials conducted them around the museum. General Secretary of USDA U Than Aung hosted a dinner in honour of the guests.

Yangon, 13 Aug- Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt inspected the maintenance of 518 ancient Tri Pitakat stone inscriptions written in the 19th century in Kotaungpyi Kyauntaik in Wundwin Township on 9 August. He gave instructions on fulfilment of Angutara Nikaya Tri Pitakat by wellwishers in Wundwin Kyauksartaik. On 10 August, the deputy minister presented Waso robes to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nana of Hanlin Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha in Meiktila. The deputy minister and party inspected Tri Pitakat Pali Kyauksartaik in Shwe-motehtaw Kyaungtaik in Thazi Township. He also inspected Maha Pethita Ordination Hall in Meiktila. On 11 August, the deputy minister went to old Myinsaing city built in 661 and inspected the wall and NanOo Pagoda and preservation of three caves in TadaU Township. The deputy Minister inspected the construction site of University of Culture (Mandalay) in Patheingyi Township and Shwenandaw Kyaung in Mandalay.

Boilermen Course opened

Yangon, 13 Aug- The opening of Boilermen Course No 1/2001 of the Regional Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department of the Ministry for Industry-1 was held at the hall of the Electric Inspection Department on Kyaikwing Pagoda Road here this morning, with an address by Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun. It was also attended by the directors-general, managing directors and directors from the ministry, course instructors and 86 trainees. The course will last 5 weeks.

Yangon Division Inter-Township School (Primary Level) soccer tourney opens

Yangon, 13 Aug- The opening ceremony of Yangon Division second Inter-Township School (Primary Level) Soccer Tournament, organized by No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) of the Ministry of Education, was held at the Salin Sports Ground this morning. It was attended by Director-General of No 3 BED U Tin Win, officials, guests, township education officers, school heads, team managers, coaches, teachers and students. The soccer teams took position in the ground. Then, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung spoke on the occasion. A total of 16 soccer teams Ñ four teams from each of the four districts of Yangon Division Ñ will participate in the tourney, which will be held from 13 to 23 August. The tourney is sponsored by the Sweety Home Industry Co Ltd.

( 8 Kanbawza Bank donates tracksuits for tentatively selected Myanmar football players

Yangon, 13 Aug- Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Limited U Aung Ko Win donated tracksuits for tentatively selected Myanmar women and men footballers who will take part in XXI SEA Games at a ceremony held at National Sports Stadium 1 (Thuwunna) this afternoon. It was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, officials of the ministry and Myanmar Football Federation, officials of Kanbawza Bank Limited, coaches, managers and footballers of tentatively selected Myanmar teams. First, the minister spoke. Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Limited U Aung Ko Win explained the purpose of the donation and presented 10,557 US$ for the purchase of the suits to the minister who presented a certificate of honour. Then, the chairman presented tracksuits, cash assistance K 2.35 million for training  K 50,000 per head to representatives of tentatively selected Myanmar men and women football teams.

Colour printer donated to Home Affairs Ministry

Yangon, 13 Aug- Mr Toru Kobayashi and Mr Shiobara Jiro of the Japan-Myanmar Friendship Association donated a colour printer to the Ministry of Home Affairs at the office of the Minister for Home Affairs at the corner of Saya San Road and No 1 Industry Road this morning. It was attended by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of the Bureau of Special Investigation U Tun Hla Aung, Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win, Deputy Director-General of the General Administration Department U Maung Win and Deputy Director-General of the Prisons Department U Saw Ngwe.

Tree-planting ceremony held

Yangon, 13 Aug- Under the patronage of the Yangon Command, trees are planted at weekends at the stations under the command. No 4 Military Region Commander Yangon Station Commander Brig-Gen Myo Myint attended the tree-planting ceremony held at No 2 local battalion in Dagon Myothit (East) and Dagon Myothit (South) townships on 11 August morning. Lt-Col Myint Kyi and Maj Aung Myo Tun of the battalion, officers and other ranks, Tatmadawmen and family members exceeding 400 planted over 6,000 trees.

Yangon, 13 Aug- A ceremony to present cash and hospital equipment donated by wellwishers from home and abroad to the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the multi-purpose hall of the Association at the corner of Parami Road and Than-thumar Road, South Okkalapa Township, here, this morning. It was attended by MMCWA Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC members. Daw Moe Moe Myint, wife of the minister for Industry-2, presented ten wheeled chairs donated by the Ministry of Industry-2; Mr Toru Kobayashi and Mr Shiobara of Japan Media Co of Japan a computer colour printer valued at K 700,000 and stationery; Ranbaxy Co K 270,000 and 100 signboards worth K 27,000 and Haj Daw Aye Myint of No 99, 42nd Street, Botahtaung Township, K 100,000 for MMCWA to the vice-chairperson, who presented certificates of honour to the wellwishers. The chairperson spoke words of thanks.

Trainees of preliminary health care courses visit MMCWA

Yangon, 13 Aug- The trainees of district level preliminary health care courses from Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Maldives, Thailand, Bhutan and Sri Lanka, led by Director (Public Health) of the Department of Health U Htay Lwin, visited the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthumar Road, South Okkalapa Township, this afternoon. MMCWA Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe briefed them on the tasks being undertaken by the Association. Afterwards, the Chairperson answered queries raised by the trainees. Then, the trainees visited the All-round Development Centre for Children and Domestic Science School run by the MMCWA.

School health exhibition opens

Yangon, 13 Aug- The Basic Education High School No 1 in Dagon Township held a ceremony to open health exhibition in conjunction with an educative talk on health to mark School Health Week at Dagon Thiri Hall of the school this morning. Headmaster U Kyaw Kyaw formally opened the exhibition. Dr Daw Khin Lay Gyi, Dr Daw Khin Ohn Lwin and Dr Daw Kyi Kyi Than gave educative talks. After the ceremony, the guests viewed the exhibition.

Entries invited for colour photo contests

Yangon, 13 Aug- The Working Committee for Organizing Literary and Photo Contest will hold colour photo contest in commemoration of the 57th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day. Two titles "Construction work all over Myanmar" and "Love-inspiring cultural arts" have been designated for the colour photo contest. Contestants can send up to four photos for each title. The entry is to be 10" x 12". If an entry for the colour photo contest wins a prize, its negative is to be sent. Data about photos and captions are to be written on a separate sheet of paper. If there is a model, his or her permission is required. The entry is not to be published before in any publications and it is not to be a prize-winning work at home and abroad. The first, second, third and special prizes will be presented for each contest. Prizes will be presented to those who stand first, second and third in colour photo contests in Yangon on the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, 27 March 2002. Special prizes will be presented at the 57th Anniversary Armed Forces Day ceremonies held at the respective commands. The entry is to be sent to U Tun Min, Director of the Information and Public Relations Department, 22-24, Pansodan Street, before 14 February 2002.
