(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to  Mongolia

YANGON, 11 July - On the occasion of the anniversary of the People' Revolution Day of Mongolia, which  falls on 11 July 2001, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Natsagiyn Bagabandi,  President of Mongolia.

(2) Secretary-1 inspects Kyimyindine School for the Blind

YANGON, 10 July -Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt  inspected Kyimyindine School for the Blind of the Social Welfare Department, the Ministry of Social  Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, in Kyimyindine Township this morning. Accompanied by officials of  the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-1 arrived at the school at 9 am and was  welcomed by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, the deputy  ministers, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Director-General of Social Welfare Department U Sit Myaing,  heads of departments, Principal of the school Daw Khin Sein Cho, teachers and students.

First, the Secretary-1 inspected teaching of English with the use of Duxbury Braille Translator Software  computers at the school. The computerized brailled letters are being printed with Index Everest Braille  Printer and bound into books. At the meeting hall, Daw Khin Sein Cho reported to the Secretary-1 on  background history of the school, its area, the number of students, education and health matters and  participation of the student athletes in the national and international sports events, joined in by Minister  Maj-Gen Sein Htwa. The minister and Director-General U Sit Myaing explained raising of funds for the  new school building and the design of the building with the help of charts. After attending to the needs,  the Secretary-1 chose the site to construct the building.

Afterwards, a ceremony was held to present donations for the new building. Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt presented K 500,000, donated by the MEC, to the  minister. He also accepted K 500,000 donated by Yangon City Development Committee and K 100,000,  by U Aung Khaing and Daw Kyu Kyu Than of Mandaing Diesel Pumps and Nozzles Repair Workshop.

The Secretary-1 and party then enjoyed the song sung by the students to the accompaniment of the school  music troupe. The song was composed by an old student of the school, Maung Zaw Htwe Oo, who is now  a first-year Myanmar Language student of the University of Distance Education. During his meeting with  the officials, the Secretary-1 urged them to upgrade the school to accommodate up to 300 students, to pay  attention to keeping the school and environs clean, to maintain the school buildings, to apply modern  teaching aids and methods. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the class- rooms, art rooms and the  vocational education curriculum. The Secretary-1 cordially greeted the students and left the school in the  morning.

(3) Minister for CPT inspects Chief Accountant's Office of MPT

YANGON, 10 July-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Thein Zaw inspected  functions of sections at the Chief Accountant's Office of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications on Bo  Sun Pat Street yesterday. The chief accountant reported on the set-up of the Accounts Department,  functions, targets for earning income and actual accomplishment. The minister inspected the sections. The  minister next went to satellite communication station in Toegyaunggalay and installation of VSAT and  cultivation of paddy in the compound. The Chief Engineer reported on installation of equipment for  VSAT satellite, establishment of VSAT communication stations in townships and the satellite  communication system. The minister then gave instructions. The minister inspected international satellite  communication station-B. The minister also inspected concrete telephone post production factory.

Production of quality goods stressed

YANGON, 10 July - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung inspected No 1 Ceramicware Factory of the  Myanma General Maintenance Industries on Thamaing Station Road in Mayangon Township here this  morning. Accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win and officials, the minister inspected the  fish pond and warehouses. He stressed the need to produce a large variety of quality goods. At the briefing  hall, the minister observed the pro-ducts of the factory and met with the officials. Managing Director of  MGMI U Thaik Tun reported to the minister on matters relating to the extension project of the factory  with the help of maps and charts. The minister spoke of the need to gather machinery and parts required  for upgrading the factory and to renovate the age-old kilns or substitute them with the new ones.

In Hline Township, the minister inspected the production process at the No 2 Ceramicware Factory of  MGMI. He then inspected production of aluminium-ware, enamel coating process, kiln-drying process,  quality control sector and packaging sector. After inspecting the chosen site to build the extended building  of the factory, production process, raw materials and the products of the factory. The minister met with  officials at the briefing hall. At the No 2 Soap Factory of the Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries in the  township, the minister inspected the buildings in need of renovation, fuel oil and water tanks, boiler and  machine workshop and distribution of soap. The minister stressed the need to continuously supply  finished-goods to Winthuza Shops across the nation.

(4)  Commerce Minister meets Singaporean guests

YANGON, 10 July-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone met Country Manager Mr Tan Kiat Seng  of Sutl Corporation of Singapore at his office at 1 p.m. today. Also present at the call were Deputy  Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye,  Director-General of Border Trade Department U Nay Win, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural  Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials.

Minister U Saw Tun receives guest

YANGON, 10 July-Minister for Population and Immigration U Saw Tun received Director-General Mr  Bruson Mekinley of International Organization for Migration in Geneva, Switzerland at his office this  afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Maung Aung, Director-General of Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay and officials.

Home Affairs Minister meets PRC Ambassador

YANGON, 10 July- Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the Union of Myanmar Mr Li Jinjun at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were  Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Myanmar Police  Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and Head of Office U Thet Tun.

MNWCWA members meet Indian think tank

YANGON, 10 July- Member of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Daw  Khin Win Shwe and committee members met members of Bengal Initiative, a think tank of Calcutta,  India, at the Women's Development Department in Kamayut Township on 6 July. They discussed   women's affairs of the two countries.

(5)  Myanma Lacquerware Institute holds second diploma and certificate presentation

YANGON, 10 July-The second diploma and certificate presentation ceremony of the lacquerware diploma and basic and advanced lacquerware courses was held at Myanma Lacquerware Institute in Bagan  yesterday. Present were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Director-General of Cottage Industries U  Sein Than, Director of Mandalay Division Cooperative Department U Aung Phyu, Vice-Chairman of CB  Bank U Khin Maung Aye, Chairman of NyaungU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin  Maung Oo, Secretary of NyaungU District Union Solidarity and Development Association U Ye Myint,  Principal of Myanma Lacquerware Institute U Yu Thein and trainees.

Minister U Aung San spoke on the occasion and presented prizes to outstanding trainees. Director- General of Cottage Industries U Sein Than presented certificates to the trainees including Mr Oun Heuane  Souka Seum and Mrs Saleum Phone of Laos who passed the advanced lacquerware course. Principal U Yu  Thein presented certificates to those who passed basic course. The minister and guests observed  lacquerware products. The minister went to the showroom of Bagan Gift Producers Cooperative Society  and viewed Myanma handicrafts. The minister inspected raising of layers at Armanthit Livestock  Breeding Cooperative Society in Thiripyitsaya Ward. The minister also inspected shop of NyaungU  Township GEC (Education) Cooperative Society Ltd and oil mill of Anawrahta General Enterprise.

Mass movement launched to control dengue fever

YANGON, 10 July- Mass movement to control dengue fever was launched in South Okkalapa Township  this morning, attended by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Chairman of Yangon City  Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay. Also present were Deputy Ministers for Health Prof. Dr Mya  Oo and Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung, YCDC members, Director-General of  Health Department Dr Wan Maung, officials, health officers, departmental personnel, Township Police  Force members members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire  Brigade, Maternal and Child Welfare Association and local people. Doctors gave talks on the dengue  fever, preventive measures being taken against the disease and control plans. The minister, the mayor and  party inspected the preventive measures being taken at the wards in South Okkalapa Township.

(6) Minister inspects roads and bridges

 YANGON, 10 July-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with officials from Public Works, inspected the Dalla-Twantay-Kawhmu-Kungyangon road on 8 July morning. The minister gave  instructions on maintenance and repair of road. Then the minister heard reports on construction of  approach bridges and future tasks by the Project Engineer U Khin Maung Win at the briefing hall of  Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye) Construction Site. The minister gave instructions and attended to the needs.  The foundation of the bridge is built of reinforced bore piles and reinforced piles. The length of the bridge  is 4088 feet and it can withstand 60-ton loads.

MPF D-G inspects police stations in Rakhine State

 YANGON, 10 July-Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and officials  inspected Rakhine Police Commander's Office and Sittway District and Township Police Commander's  Offices on 6 July. On 7 July, the director-general of MPF inspected regional police station in Maungtaw  District. He also inspected Police Commander's Offices in Maungtaw and Buthidaung Townships and  police stations on 8 July. The director-general of MPF met members of the police force and families.

(7) " Soon " offered to 1,000 monks in Mandalay

YANGON, 10 July -" Soon " was offered to 1,000 monks led by Patron of Masoeyein Monastery in Mandalay Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Gandavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Padumabhivamsa at the monastery at 6 am on 8 July.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen. Yan Thein, Deputy  Commander Brig-Gen. Nay Win, senior military officers, the secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and  Development Council, departmental personnel, members of social organizations and disciples. After the  ceremony, the donors offered day meal to 50 members of the Sangha led by Patron of Masoeyein Taikthit  Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Sasanabhivamsa. Accompanied  by officials, the commander participated in tree planting ceremony of No 7 Basic Education High School  in Chanmyathazi Township at 7 am.

Over 2,500 students planted various species of saplings. The commander and party then inspected the  Shwekyetyet section of the eight-lane Mandalay city belt expressway project. At the briefing hall, the  commander looked into the requirements presented by officials of the project. He then inspected the site to  build the approach road of the Ayeyawady Bridge (Mandalay). At the ancient Shwekyetyet Pagoda, the  commander paid obeisance to the Buddha images, and inspected the pagoda general renovation project.  During his visit to Mandalay General Hospital, he asked after the health of Ovada Sayadaw Agga Maha  Pandita Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Paasippa of Yangon Mahasi Sasana Centre who was receiving  medical treatment there.
 
Ministry of Health offers " soon " to members of Sangha

YANGON, 10 July-A ceremony to offer soon for the first time to the members of the Sangha led by the  Rector Sayadaw of the State Pariyatti Sasana University was held at Mogok Sonsarsaung on Kaba Aye  Hill this morning, attended by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Ministers Prof. Dr Mya Oo  and Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint and their wives, departmental heads and staff families.

 The Congregation received the Five Precepts from the Rector Sayadaw. Then, the minister, the deputy  ministers and their wives presented offertories to the Sayadaw. Afterwards, the minister presented K  100,000 for a day's meal for 450 members of the Sangha to Director-General of the Department for  Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, followed by sharing of merits gained. Then soon  was offered.

(8)  Agriculture and supply of water coordinated in Sagaing Division

YANGON, 10 July-A coordination meeting on agriculture and supply of water in Sagaing Division was held at the city hall in Monywa on 6 July. Present were Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, chairmen of Sagaing, Shwebo and Monywa District Peace and Development Councils and members of division, district and township agriculture supervisory committees. The commander discussed progress of cultivation acreage, measures taken for availability of water, increased use of agricultural equipment, utilization of water in boosting production of industrial crops, tasks to be implemented and efforts for Sagaing Division to become the rice bowl in upper Myanmar. Those present discussed cultivation conditions in the division and methods for availability of water. The commander then fulfilled the requirements.
 
Cash assistance for aged and disabled War Veterans

YANGON, 10 July - Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee presented cash  assistance to aged war veterans of 75 and above, disabled war veterans and children of the war veterans  who are outstanding in their education in Toungoo Township yesterday. Patron of Bago Division War  Veterans Organization member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division  Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye delivered an  address.

Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen. Soe Win Maung, Deputy  Commander Brig-Gen. Thura Maung Ni, senior military officers of the command, members of Bago  Division Peace and Development Council, officials and members of Union Solidarity and Development  Association, Women's Affairs Committee, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Fire Brigade and Red  Cross. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen. Soe Win Maung and Secretary of Bago Division Peace  and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Min presented the cash assistance totalling 19,450,000 to aged  war veterans, disabled war veterans and children of the war veterans who are outstanding in their education. The ceremony ended with concluding remarks by the commander.

Fukuoka-bound students on tour

YANGON, 10 July-Ten students from States and Divisions who will attend the Get-together of Children  of Asia and Pacific to be held in Fukuoka, Japan, together with Headmistress of Kamayut BEHS No 2  Daw Tin Aye Sint and officials of Education Planning and Training Department and No 1 Basic Education Department visited Defence Services Museum, MRTV, National Indoor Stadium- 1 and Super  One department store today.
 
Extended Meat & Fish Production Committee meets

YANGON, 10 July-The coordination meeting of the Extended Fish and Meat Production Committee was held at the hall of the Fisheries Department on Hsinmin Road in Ahlon Township this afternoon, attended  by Chairman of the committee Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen. Tin Ngwe, Vice-Chairman  Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Thein.

Members of sub-committees reported on extended production of prawn, the deputy ministers on work done  and future plans on extended meat and fish production in states and divisions, the director-general of the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department and officials on extended meat and veterinary production.  Secretary of the committee Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein presented a  supplementary report. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the chairman and the  vice-chairman.

Home Affairs Ministry Chess

YANGON, 10 July - The 12th Chess Competition of the Ministry of Home Affairs began today at Prisons Department in Insein Township, with an address by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing. Also  present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung, directors-general of the departments under  the ministry, officials of Myanmar Chess Federation and others. Seven teams are taking part in the competition.

(9) Drug smugglers get 20 years

YANGON, 10 July-Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, searched Aik Yin, 20, and Aik Lu, 18, of  Hopin Hoywet Village in Mongtong Township, Thai citizens Law Lauk Wan, 35, of Lwesutit Street in  Chiangmai, Thailand, Thai Phone Mali Hone, 42, and Ma Kyan Phyin Mali Hone of Chiangmai, at BP  (1) Border Checkpoint in Mongtong on 27 March afternoon and found nine sachets each containing 1,800  stimulant pills in the bag of Aik Yin. The Mongsat police station filed them under Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic Substances Law and three Thais under Immigration Act. The Mongsat District Court handed  down 20 years' imprisonment under Section 20 (B) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law  on them and four years' imprisonment under Section 13 (1) of Immigration Act on three Thais.
