opening of Drug Elimination Museum
YANGON, 21 June- Secretary-1 of the State Peace
and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt inspected preparations
for opening of the Drug Elimination Museum at the corner of Kyundaw
and Hanthawady Roads in Kamayut Township and display of booths
there this evening and gave necessary instructions to officials.
Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council
Office, the Secretary-1 arrived at the Museum where they were
welcomed by Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control
Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, ministers, deputy
ministers, Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police
Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and members, chairmen and officials of
the Construction Committee for Drug Elimination Museum and the
exhibition committee of the Museum. First, the Secretary-1

(5) Minister inspects Kokeshi Dolls
Exhibition
YANGON, 21 June - Minister for Culture U Win Sein
inspected Japan Kokeshi Dolls Exhibition to be held from 22 to 28
June at multi-purpose room of the National Museum on Pyay Road this
afternoon. The directors-general and the deputy directors-general of
the Cultural Institute Department, the Department of Archaeology and
the Fine Arts Department, the rector of University of Culture
(Yangon) and Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori
welcomed and conducted the minister round the exhibition. Minister U
Win Sein viewed the 70 wooden dolls and 14 scenic photos of Japan
and gave suggestions. The exhibition will be opened from 10 am to 4
p.m. daily. Admission is free.
Construction Minister inspects
Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2
YANGON, 21 June-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen
Saw Tun, together with Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe,
Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen. Myint Thein and officials
of Public Works, arrived at Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf yesterday afternoon.
He inspected unloading of 796.454 tons of bridge frames of the China
National Constructional and Agricultural Machinery Import & Export
Corporation, China, to be used at Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway), from mv
Mongla of Myanma Five Star Line. The frames were placed on May Htoo
Flat Barge OB 494.
The minister gave instructions on speedy arrival
of the frames to the worksite and safety in transporting them along
the Ayeyawady River. As 3142.438 tons of frames have already been
arrived, six spans of the bridge can be built. Altogether about 9200
tons of frames are needed for the bridge and the rest will arrive
here on board the ships of MFSL in July.
Then, the minister together with Deputy Minister
Brig-Gen. Myint Thein and officials proceeded to
Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2 where they inspected construction work,
piling of Pile No 4 and progress. Superintending Engineer U Myint
Lwin of Bridge Construction Special Group-1 reported on work done
and future tasks. The minister gave instructions on timely
completion, preparations for future tasks, worksite safety, close
supervision of the officials concerned, construction of piers,
maintenance of machinery and minimizing wastage, and attended to the
needs. The bridge linking Dagon Seikkan Township and Thanlyin
Township is a six-lane reinforced concrete bridge. It is 4540-ft
long. It has 72-ft wide mortorway and six-ft wide walkways on both
sides and can withstand 60-ton loads.

(6) Industry-2 Minister inspects chosen
sites for plants
YANGON, 21 June-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen
Saw Lwin, accompanied by officials, arrived at Indagaw Industrial
Zone of the ministry in Indagaw in Bago Division yesterday
afternoon. Managing Director U Ye Tun of the Myanma Industrial
Construction Services, Managing Director U Soe Thein of the Myanma
Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries, Managing Director U Kyaw
Win of the Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries and
officials reported on condition of the chosen site for a new
industrial project, construction of buildings and timely arrival of
machinery. Then the minister and party inspected the sites chosen
for the workshop and ball-bearing plant, ACSR Aluminium String
producing plant of MMTEI. The minister also chose the site for
33-kV power plant to supply electricity to the industries in the
zone. There, he left instructions on timely completion of
construction, cooperation with the officials the industries, for
early arrival of machinery and planting of shade trees in the
environs of the plants.

YANGON, 21 June- A ceremony to donate cash
towards the funds of Myanmar Women's Day which falls on 3 July 2001
to be organized by Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's
Affairs was held at Bogyoke Aung San Hall of Social Welfare
Department at 64, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Mayangon Township, this
afternoon. Present on the occasion were Chairperson of the Working
Committee for Organizing the Myanmar Women's Day-2001 member of
MNWCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, adviser Daw Khin Than Nwe,

(7) Mayor inspects cultivation of monsoon
paddy in Uto-Kya-in region
YANGON, 21 June-Chairman of Yangon City
Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by officials,
inspected cultivation of monsoon paddy and land reclamation of
agricultural and livestock breeding projects in Uto-Kya-in region
in Taikkyi Township this morning. First, Mayor U Ko Lay inspected
breeding of prawn and fish fry and gave instructions. Then, the
mayor and party inspected cultivation of monsoon paddy in No 1
Sapakaing Village-tract, Tawyat region and construction of pig
farms, cultivation of pesinngon and monsoon paddy in Tawyat region
and gave suggestions to officials. Mayor U Ko Lay inspected
cultivation of monsoon paddy and extension of cultivated lands near
Kya-in Village and gave instructions. The mayor went to Zegon
cultivated camp and inspected pesinngon, pedisein and matpe field
and cultivation of corn, banana, pineapple and papaya. Then, the
mayor proceeded to Intwingyi region and gave instructions on use of
heavy machinery, construction of canals and regional development
tasks to be done. A total of 8,000 acres of monsoon paddy would be
cultivated in Uto-Kya-in region under agricultural and farming
project.

YANGON, 21 June- Myanmar May Flower Bank Ltd held
a briefing on development and modern
banking service of the bank to entrepreneurs at Mani Yadana Hall in
Mogok on 16 June. Present on the occasion were No 2 Tactical
Operations Commander Col Thein Hlaing, Commanding Officer Lt-Col Ye
Htut of the local battalion, Deputy Commanding Officer Maj Tun Tun
Naung, military and civilian officers, Executive Director U Win
Naing of MMB, Managing Director U Khin Maung, Division Manager

Preparations for opening
multimedia teaching centre inspected
YANGON, 21 June-Chairman of Ayeyawady Division
Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen
Thura Shwe Mann, accompanied by departmental officials, inspected
preparations for opening of multimedia teaching centre of No 1 Basic
Education High School in Mawlamyinegyun, Myaungmya District, on 17
June. Headmaster U Saw Diamond and officials conducted the
commander round the centre.
The headmaster reported on concerted efforts
being made for opening of the centre; Chairman of the School Board
of Trustees U Ko Ko Lwin, cooperation for opening of the centre and
Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department U Tin Nyo,
plans for promotion of education. Then, the commander presented
teaching aid tapes to the officials, and gave instructions. He
proceeded to the Project Office for ensuring sufficient food,
increasing incomes and environmental improvement of mangrove forest
regions in Ayeyawady Division being conducted by the State, the
United Nations Development Programme and Food and Agriculture
Organization at Kyungale Village, Thabyu-gon Village-tract, Bogale
Township. He met with the trainees from local villages at the
training hall of the office. The Project in-charge reported on the
purpose of opening the course. Later, the commander spoke of
rendering assistance for local development and conditions of
agriculture, livestock breeding and environmental conservation, and
attended to the requirements.
Commander
inspects region development tasks in Bago Division
YANGON, 21 June- Hailing the Myanmar Women's Day,
the monsoon tree-planting ceremony-2001, co-organized by Bago
Division Peace and Development Council and Bago Division Working
Committee for Women's Affairs, was held at the sports ground in
Toungoo on 19 June morning, attended by Chairman of Bago Division
Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen
Tin Aye and Patron of Bago Division WCWA wife of the commander Daw
Kyi Kyi Ohn. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Commander
Brig-Gen. Thura Maung Ni, Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Thein and senior
military officers of Toungoo Station, the Secretary of Bago
Division Peace and Development Council, departmental officials,
service personnel, members of the Union Solidarity and Development
Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Maternal and
Child Welfare Association, War Veterans
Organization, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, nurses,
teachers, students and local people totalling over 2,000.
The commander and wife planted the saplings at
the designated places. And those present at the
ceremony also planted about 2,000 shade and other saplings. Then,
the commander, accompanied by officials, attended the planting of
10,000 saplings at the command headquarters. In Toungoo, various
kinds of 65,000 saplings were planted at regiments and units,
departments and wards of the township. After that, the commander
attended the first teachership diploma presentation ceremony of
Toungoo Education College at the college. Principal Daw Kyi Myaing
explained matters related to the certificate presentation ceremony
and presented teachership diplomas to trainees. At the ceremony,
Diploma in Teaching was conferred on 194 trainees and Certificate
in Education on 76 trainees.
Then, letters of appointment were presented to
them. Afterwards, the commander delivered an address at the
coordination meeting between division level departmental officials
of Bago Division Peace and Development Council, District and
Township Peace and Development Councils at the meeting hall of the
command headquarters. The commander gave instructions on cooperation
among the departments for implementing the aims of projects in
respective sectors, extended agriculture and livestock breeding
tasks and providing assistance to local farmers and breeders. Then,
officials reported to the commander on their respective sectors.

Commander attends shooting
contest, tree-planting ceremony in Mandalay
YANGON, 21 June- A ceremony to open the Central
Command Commander's Shield Shooting Contest was held at the
shooting range of the local training depot in PyinOoLwin on 19 June
afternoon. Present were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and
Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife, the deputy
commander, senior military officers, commanding officers of
regiments and units, officers, Tatmadawmen and family members,
guests and marksmen. The commander gave a speech. Then, the
commander launched the contest . A total of 54 teams are taking part
in the contest which will continue till 30 June. In the evening,
the commander attended the tree-planting ceremony to mark the
Myanmar Women's Day at the No 14 Basic Education Primary School in
Chanmyathazi Township. At the ceremony, the commander, the mayor
and officials planted saplings at the designated places. A total of
1,730 saplings were planted roadsides and in the compound of No 14
BEPS.

Army, Navy and Air) Badminton Tourney ends
YANGON, 21 June-The final matches of
Commander-in-Chief's Shield Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Badminton
Tourney were held in conjunction with the prize-distribution
ceremony at the stadium in Taunggyi, Shan State (South), on 19
June, attended by Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development
Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, senior
military officers, members of Shan State Peace and Development
Council, departmental officials, family members of officers and
other ranks and athletes. In the final match (double), Chief Petty
Officer Zaw Win and Leading Seaman Tun Aung of Tatmadaw (Navy) beat
Petty Officer Win Tun and Seaman Kyaw Zeya Way of Tatmadaw (Navy)
2-1. Officials presented prizes to the first, second and third
prize-winning teams, and men and women (single/double) who stood
first, second and third. Daw Khin Lay Myint, wife of the commander,
presented prizes to the winning team of Central Command while the

Takraw Tournament ends
YANGON, 21 June The final matches and the prize
presentation ceremony for the Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Shield
Sepak Takraw Tournament were held at Thiha Thura Tun Tin Hall of
Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters this morning. Present
on the occasion were Commander of Naval Shipyards Command Commodore
Paw Tun, Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Captain Maw
Thein, Officiating Commander of Naval Training Command Cmdr Myint
Thein, senior naval officers of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s
Office and headquarters, naval flotillas, central depots and
vessels in Yangon Station, officers and Tatmadawmen, family members
and athletes. In the final matches, No 1 Major War Vessel Group won
the first in the team event; Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Office won
the first in the group event, 2nd-Lt Ye Maung Maung won the best
development player award and Lt Myint Tha Maung of
Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Office the best player award. On behalf
of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), Commander Commodore Paw Tun
presented championship shield to No 1 Major War Vessel Group.

events to mark Olympic Day held
YANGON, 21 June- The boxing tourney to mark 2001
Olympic Day was held at Youth Training Centre (Thuwunna) this
afternoon. Among the spectators were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic
Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint,
Director-General U Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education
Department, officials and President U Win Myint of Myanmar Boxing
Federation. A total of 18 boxers took part in the six categories.
After the tourney, officials presented prizes to the respective
winners. Then, the minister together with officials attended the
Sepak Takraw tournament to mark Olympic Day at the gymnasium.
Similarly, the yachting and shooting events to mark Olympic Day were
held at the respective sports federations.

(9) 1,600 kilos of Ephedrine powder seized
in Mandalay
YANGON, 21 June-A combined team comprising
members of local intelligence unit and Special Anti-Drug Squad,
acting on information, searched the godown of U Lichi Yon of No La
1/53, Chanmya Thayar Ward, Pyigyitagon Township, Mandalay Division
and seized 1,600 kilos (about six tons) of ephedrine powder on 7
June 2001. The authorities arrested Ah Way (a) Maung Ye, of No 152,
North Ward, Muse; U Lichi Yon, of No 125/1, (between 32th street and
33rd street) and (between 72th street and 73rd street), Yanmyonlon
Ward, Chanaye- thazan Ward, Mandalay; Khin Maung Aye, of Block No
131, 19th Street (between 88th Street and 89th Street),
Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay; Kyaw Thein, of 15th Street
(between 86th Street and 87th Street), Aungmyaythazan Township,
Mandalay and Pyay Thein, of 15th Street (between 86th Street and
87th Street) in connection with the seizure of the drugs. Further
information led to the arrest of Khin Maung Aye (a) Musa of No 80,
Kanbawza Street, Bahan Township, Yangon on 13 June. Action was taken
against the five in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances laws.
Woman drug
trafficker gets 12 years
YANGON, 21 June-A combined team comprising
members of local intelligence unit and Lashio Special Anti-Drug
Squad, acting on information, searched Ma Pyone, 44, of Southern
Ward in Muse, at Five Star Teashop in Lashio and arrested her
together with 955 stimulant tablets bearing the letters" WY " on 7
February. She was filed under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances Law by the Lashio police station. The Lashio District
Court handed down twelve years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on
her on 21 May.
Opium
possessor gets 10 years
YANGON, 21 June-Members of local intelligence
unit and Myitkyina Special Anti-Drug Squad searched the house of Ma
En Byan Ja Ywe, 25, of Seikmu Village in Phakant Township and found
1.47 kilos of opium on 1 February. The Phakant police station filed
her under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The
Myitkyina District Court handed down ten years' imprisonment under
Section 19 (A) of the law on her on 6 April.
