YANGON, 12 June-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, on the occasion of the National Day of the Russian Federation which falls on 12 June 2001.

YANGON, 12 June-On the occasion of the 103rd Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of the Philippines which falls on 12th June 2001, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to Her Excellency Madame Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines.

YANGON, 11 June-Chair- man of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received Special Envoy of the President of the Philippines Mr Rizalino S Navarro at the Credentials Hall in the Pyithu Hluttaw building this morning. Also present on the occasion together with Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and  Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. YANGON, 11 June-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen. Abel met Special Envoy of the President of the Philippines Mr Rizalino S Navarro at the latter office at 2 p.m. today. Also present on the occasion were officials of the department concerned.

Commerce Minister receives Swiss guests

YANGON, 11 June-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone received Managing Director of Icuis Dreyfus Trading Ltd of Switzerland Mr Guy De Montule and party at his office on Strand Road this morning. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director- General of the Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of the Border Trade Department U Nay Win, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials.
 
F&R Minister receives PRC Ambassador

YANGON, 11 June-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Jinjun at his office at 9.30 am today. They discussed matters related to cooperation on a mutually beneficial basis between the two countries. Also present at the call was  Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

Minister inspects roads and bridges in Rakhine State

YANGON, 11 June-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials inspected Taungup-
Thandwe Road on 8 June. The minister and party arrived at the construction site of Pyi Creek Bridge on Taungup-Thandwe Road. Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint and officials reported on construction of the approach structure and piles of the bridge and installation of the truss. The minister gave instructions.

On 9 June, the minister inspected Thandwe-Gwa-Ngathaingchaung Road and went to the site of Kinpon Bridge. Rakhine State Superintending Engineer U Thein Kyaw reported on repair and requirement. The minister gave instructions. The minister and party went to Daungchaung camp. Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Tint reported on targets for Yekyi-Ngathaingchaung-Gwa (Rakhine State section) and Yekyi-Ngathaingchaung-Gwa (Ayeyawady section). On 10 June, the minister inspected  Ngathaingchaung-Yekyi-Kangalay-Nyaungdon Road. Deputy Superintending Engineer U Aung Myint reported on targets and progress of work. The minister and party arrived back here in the evening.

Deputy Minister inspects railroads

YANGON, 11 June - Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than, together with division-level officials of Myanma Railways, inspected Yangon-Mandalay railroads in Thazi, Meiktila and Wundwin Townships of Mandalay Division on 3 June. The deputy minister gave instructions. Now trains are  regularly running along the railroads. On 6 June, the deputy minister inspected Thazi-Myingyan Railroad and gave instructions on repairs of the railroads which had been flooded and eroded by water. On 7 June, the deputy minister, together with division-level officials, inspected Thazi-Kalaw-Shwe-nyaung Railroad and gave instructions on maintenance and improvement of railroads.
 
Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism inspects hotels

YANGON, 11 June-Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt and officials inspected Asia Plaza Hotel on Bogyoke Aung San Street and Hsinbyudaw Hotel on Kan Road in Hline Township on 8 June. Director-General U Khin Maung Lat discussed serving of hygienic food at the hotels in the rainy season, maintenance of hotel rooms and rendering of hotel service in accord with rules and regulations.

Myanmar Sports Medicine Course opened

YANGON, 11 June-The opening of the 2001 Myanmar Sports Medicine Course of IOC-Medical
Commission was held at Mya Yeik Nyo Hotel here this morning. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Ministers for Health Prof. Dr Mya Oo and Prof. Dr Kyaw Myint, Director of Medical Services of Defence Services Brig-Gen. Mya Thein Han and  officials, officials from Medical Commission of International Olympic Committee, distinguished guests, rectors, professors and medical experts attended the ceremony.

Minister Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint and member of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director Brig-Gen. Mya Thein Han delivered speeches. Then, member of Medical Committee Resident Representative of South-East Asia Prof. Dr Keun Youl Kim extended greetings and the first day of the course commenced. One trainee each from Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, and medical officers from eight Myanmar sports federations and 16 medical officers of state/division Sports and Physical Education Departments are attending the course. Prof. Keun Youl Kim of Korea, Prof. K M Chan Hong  Kong, Prof. N Mallick of Pakistan and seven from Myanmar are giving lectures at the course.

Prizes presented to winners of commander's shield Chess Tourney

YANGON, 11 June-The prize presentation ceremony of Year 2001 Southern Command Commander's Shield Chess Tournament was held at the hall of the Division Peace and Development Council on 8 June. It was attended by Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Thura Maung Ni, Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Thein of Toungoo Station, senior military officers and other ranks and family members and guests. The commander presented prizes to the winners and winning teams. Then, the commander attended the  ceremony to honour 64 Fire Brigade members of Toungoo Township, Bago Division, who were outstanding in their performance, held at the Township Gymnasium. The commander presented uniforms worth K 202,000 and cash awards to them through Assistant Director of the Division Fire Services Department U Aung Kyaw Myint and officials.

(6) Special Refresher Course No 1 for Township Judges opens

YANGON, 11 June - A ceremony to open Special Refresher Course No 1 for Township Judges was held at the Supreme Court this morning with an address by Chief Justice U Aung Toe. The Chief Justice said that judges are to continuously study the aims and policies laid down by the State and make greater efforts to pass decisions in accord with the policies of the State. The courses are being opened in order to train the judges, and they are also to follow the existing laws and by-laws and the decisions of the Supreme Court. The judges are required to understand the aims and basic principles of administration of justice of the State and to strive for the emergence of the righteous system of administration of justice. They are to make efforts for the emergence of the system of administration of justice on which the people rely and to try to become good judges imbued with morals, dignity, fairness of mind and wisdom. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo, Supreme Court Justices U Khin Myint, Dr Tin Aung Aye, U Myint Thein, U Chit Lwin, U Tun Shin, Director-General of the Supreme Court U Tin Aye and  directors, advisers, deputy directors, the head of Office and guests. Altogether 62 trainees are attending the course which will last three weeks.

Commander inspects construction of Chindwin River Bridge (Monywa)

YANGON, 11 June-Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of
North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, together with officials, inspected construction of Chindwin River Bridge (Monywa) on 8 June. Superintending Engineer of the Bridge Construction Group U San Nyein and officials reported on work being done and future tasks. The commander then gave instructions on timely completion of the project and taking care for worksite safety, and attended to the needs.
 
Sayagyi U Goenka to arrive in Yangon

YANGON, 11 June-Sayagyi Maha Saddhamma-jotikadhaja U Goenka, who is teaching Maha Thatipat- thana (meditation) around the world, will arrive in Yangon by air tomorrow evening.

(7)  Cash donated at Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 11 June-Members of the Sangha, devotees and pilgrims from far and wide visit Mindhamma Hill, where the Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni image is kept, and make donations for all-round renovation of the image daily. On 9 June morning, Daw Nan Lon and group (temporarily in Singapore) presented K 200,000 to Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Aung Ko and officials who accepted the donation and presented a certificate of honour to the donor. Fifty trainees from the  International Thravada Buddhist Missionary University together with supervisors visited the hill and made donations yesterday morning.

Fitter training course No 3 opens

YANGON, 11 June-The fitter training course No 3 was opened at the Training School of No 1 Oil Refinery (Thanlyin) this morning. Minister for Energy Brig-Gen. Lun Thi delivered a speech. Also present were Deputy Minister U Tin Tun, heads of department, officials, course instructors and trainees. The 8-week course is being attended by 16 trainees from factories of Myanma Petrochemicals Enterprise.

Mupalin middle school gets new building

YANGON, 11 June - A ceremony to hand over a new building for the basic education middle school was held in Mupalin Village, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, this morning. Director (Admin) of No 1 Basic Education Department U Thaung Khaing, Chairman of Kyaikto Township Peace and Development  Council U Myo Myint and wellwisher Chairman of Myanmar Yutani Co Ltd Mr Takio Yutani formally opened the new school building.

Mr Takio Yutani presented documents related to the new school building to Director U Thaung Khaing. Also present on the occasion were members of Kyaikto Township Peace and Development Council, the chairman and members of Mupalin Village Peace and Development Council, officials of Mon State and Kyaikto Township Education Officers' Offices members of the Union Solidarity and Development  Association and Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, local people, teachers and students. Also present together with Mr Takio Yutani were Mr Kiriishi Hiroyuki of Osaka of Japan, Managing Director of Myanmar Yutani Co Ltd Mr Yoshinori Komaru and General Manager U Saw Win. The new school building, 140 feet long, 30 feet wide and 15 feet high, consists of seven classrooms, and it was built at a cost of K 8 million.
 
Sri Lankan delegation concludes visit

YANGON, 11 June-The six-member delegation led by Minister of Culture of Sri Lanka Mr M C Gopallawa, who were on a visit here at the invitation of Minister for Culture U Win Sein under the cultural exchange programme between the two nations, left here for home by air yesterday evening. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt, Ambassador of Sri Lanka Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa and officials of the Ministry of Culture.

(8)  Vice-Mayor visits agricultural and livestock breeding farms

YANGON, 11 June- Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa visited North Okkalapa Agricultural and Livestock Breeding Farm being undertaken by the Production Department and Aungmingalar Livestock Breeding Farm by the Veterinary and Slaughter Houses Department this morning. The vice-mayor gave instructions on the work and attended to the needs.

Commander's Shield Volleyball Championship opened

YANGON, 11 June-The opening ceremony of the Commander's Shield Men's and Women's Volleyball   Championship of Yangon Command was held at the gymnasium in Hlaing Township this morning, with  an address by Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Hsan Hsint. The commanders of the regional commands, station commanders, senior military officers of the command, officers and other ranks, families and  players attended the ceremony. Five men's matches and 3 women's matches were held after the ceremony and 20 men's teams and 11 women's teams are taking part in the championship which will continue till 22 June.
 
Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Shield Traditional Chinlon and Sepak Takraw C'ship concluded

YANGON, 11 June- A ceremony to present prizes to the winners of Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Shield  Traditional Chinlon and Sepak Takraw Championship was held at Thura Thiha Thura Aung Myat Hall of Hmawby Air Base this afternoon. It was attended by high-ranking officers of Commander-in-Chief's Office, commanders of Air Force Headquarters and Air Bases, squadron leaders, officers and other ranks  and family members and others. Hmawby Air Base Team won championship shields in traditional  Chinlon and Sepak Takraw Tournaments. On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief (Air), Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe presented championship shields to the winning team.

(9) Drug traffickers get prison terms

YANGON, 11 June-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon special  drug squad, acting of information, searched Alinyaung Guest House, in Thayattaw (North) Ward,  Kyimyindine Township and seized 5.266 Kilogram of raw opium from Ma Aye Aye Mar(a) Mu Nu Yi and Win Naing. Kyimyindine Police Station filed Ma Aye Aye Mar (a) Mu Nu Yi, 25, daughter of U Mya Than of Titali village in Pinlaung Township, Shan State (South) and Win Naing, 28, son of U Than  Nyunt of Yawmingyi (1) Street, 4th ward, Dagon Myothit (East) under Section 15/ 19 (a)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 23 April, Yangon North District court handed down twenty-five years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on Ma Aye Aye Mar (a) Mu Nu Yi and twenty-five years imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and 21 on Win Naing.
