YANGON, 9 June - The National Malaria Control
Week was launched in conjunction with the opening of Roll Black
Malaria Advocacy Meeting at the Institute of Nursing (Yangon) at the
corner of Bogyoke Aung San Street and Phongyi Street this morning
with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein. Also

Chairman's Office Brig-Gen. Abel, Minister for Social Welfare,

Health Professor Dr Mya Oo and Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, officials
of the UN agencies, members of the Central Committee for Prevention
and
Control of Malaria, directors-general of departments, medical
superintendents, heads of township health departments, officials of
non-governmental organizations and guests.
In his address, the minister said that the
National Malaria Control Week and Roll Black Malaria Advocacy
Meeting are a movement of great consequence that contribute to
control of malaria. The first National Malaria Control Movement was
successfully held in May 2000. The purpose of launching that
movement is to promote public awareness in control and prevention
of malaria in the beginning of the malaria season. The government
has been implementing policies, plans and projects in order to
improve the standard of public health. In accord with the guidance
of the Head of State and the National Health Committee, such health
plans as the national health plan (2001-2006), the four-year
education promotion special plan (the health sector) (2000-2004),
the rural health
development plan (2001-2006) and the public hospital upgrading plan
(2001-2006) are being implemented in conjunction with the economic
plans of the State. Malaria poses a major problem in Myanmar.
It is the most common disease. In Myanmar, about
600,000 people suffer from Malaria every year. About 4,000 people
died of malaria every year. It is found that the rate of outbreak of
malaria and the death toll are higher in border areas than in other
areas. It is also found that malaria has reared its ugly head again.
It is because of the economic activities of people, the changes in
weather and malaria-spreading mosquitoes that have become resistant
to anti-malaria medicines. Roll Back Malaria means taking measures
to suppress malaria. In a bid to build Myanmar into a peaceful,
modern and developed nation, roads and bridges and dams are being
built and underground and above-ground natural resources tapped.
If malaria problems crop up, the projects for
development of the nation can be delayed. In implementing economic
plans, departments concerned need to cooperate with the Health
Department. Ministries and departments concerned and social
organizations need to cooperate in the tasks for control of malaria
according to the partnership system laid down by WHO. The minister
quoted the address made at the National Health Committee Meeting by
Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State
Peace and Development Council
as saying that it is necessary to take effective control measures
against spread of malaria; potent medicines need to be used; and
medicines are to be produced with the use of herbal plants which
grow in the country. The malaria control task cannot be done by the
Health Department alone. Everybody, every social organization and
every department need to cooperate in this task with
conscientiousness. Only then, can the number of outbreak of malaria
and the death toll be reduced. Encouragement is being given to
departments, people and NGOs to cooperate in
controlling malaria, a main health problem of the entire national
people.
The fruits of these concerted efforts are
concerned not only with the Health Department alone but also with
all the citizens. In conclusion, the minister called on all those
present to cooperate in the task of preventing and treating
malaria, a health problem of the State. Representative of the World
Health Organization Dr Jos Vandalaer explained matters related to
malaria. Then, the ministers and the guests observed the exhibition
on malaria opened by AA Medical Products Ltd (AA Artesunat) and
educational publications, books and posters. The Roll Back Malaria
Advocacy Meeting was held at the same venue. It was attended by
directors and deputy directors of departments under the Ministry of
Health, professors, heads of department, specialists and guests. The
