Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said at a time when the government is striving for the emergence of outstanding
intellectuals and intelligentsia capable of getting the Union of Myanmar to keep abreast with other
nations, it is very noble and appropriate to present Yuzana scholarships to persons who are outstanding in  their studies. The presentation of scholarships to doctorate degree holders and those who are doing  doctorate degree courses with the use of interests of Yuzana Education and Research Development Fund is  of great help to the education and research work of scholars. It can be said that the presentation of  scholarship contributes to national interests.

In the world today, science and technologies are advancing at a blistering pace, and due to new
communication technologies, the globalization process is picking up. It is found that every nation is
working hard to be able to keep pace with the trend of international development, to have access to new  technologies in keeping with the time, to promote national interests and to further strengthen national  economy life.

At this time, the Union of Myanmar is paying priority to implementation of tasks designed for the
emergence of national entrepreneurs who enable Myanmar to keep abreast with other nations in terms of  development, to acquire new advanced technologies, to develop highly-qualified human resources and to  further strengthen national economy life.

As the government has laid down and is striving to achieve national objectives, education promotion
programmes designed for development of highly-qualified human resources and national education
promotion programmes are making considerable progress in the education sector. In the economic sector,  it is heartening to learn that the businesses of national entrepreneurs are emerging. In addition, it is  satisfactory to see that in response to the goodwill of the government, national entrepreneurs who are  successful due to encouragement and assistance of the government have come to cooperate in the efforts of  the government for promoting national interests.

Out of the national entrepreneurs who have established a good tradition by participating in the tasks
benefiting the nation, Yuzana Company Ltd is playing an active and leading role. Yuzana Company Ltd  has been making donations to the funds of the education, health, social, religious and various sectors with  intense generosity and goodwill.

The donations made by Yuzana Company Ltd were over K 172 million to the fund of the tasks for
promotion and propagation of the Sasana, over K 280 million to the trust fund of the health and social  tasks, over K 85 million to the trust fund of the sports sector and over K 390 million to the trust fund of  the education sector.

In view of the donations made for the education sector, there have been education trust funds, the
upgrading of basic education primary schools and the opening of multimedia teaching centres at basic  education high schools. The purpose of holding the present ceremony is to present scholarships for the  second time with the use of interest money which accrued from the K 40 million trust fund set up by  Yuzana Company Ltd.

In 1999, Yuzana scholarships were presented for the first time to students taking doctorate degree courses,  and outstanding students attending honours degree courses and bachelor degree courses. Scholarships will  be presented for the second time to 652 doctorate degree holders on whom the University of Yangon  conferred doctorate degrees, those doing doctorate degree courses and those doing research for doctorate  degrees.

The State Peace and Development Council is implementing the special four-year national education
promotion plan and the 30-year long-term plan in the higher education sector in order to develop, at the  higher education level, the human resources who have been nurtured at the basic education level.  Moreover, master degree courses and doctorate degree courses for various subjects are being opened.  Altogether 14 doctorate degree courses are being opened at the Institutes of Medicines, 15 doctorate  degree courses at Yangon University, nine doctorate degree courses at Mandalay University, three  doctorate degree courses at the Institute of Economics, 15 doctorate degree courses at technological  universities, and arrangements have been made to open more doctorate degree courses.

Now there are altogether 33 doctorate degree holders on whom universities in Myanmar conferred
doctorate degrees. In coming years, the number of doctorate degree holders will increase. At that time,  Yuzana scholarships are presented to 33 doctorate degree holders and 619 persons who are doing  doctorate degree courses and doing research for doctorate degrees. The presentation of scholarships is a  very noble donation because it contributes greatly to the implementation of human resources development  programmes of the State. Doctorate degree holders, those who are taking doctorate degree courses and  those who are doing research for doctorate degrees are to work for the interests of the State in response to  the goodwill of the Yuzana Company Ltd.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 wished that those who are given scholarships would be able to uplift the  prestige of the nation with their intellectual power, that they would be able to promote the interests of the  State, that they would be able to turn out human resources capable of keeping abreast with those from  other nations, and that Yuzana Company Ltd would be able to firmly stand as a thriving national business  and to contribute to the tasks concerning the race, religion and Sasana.
