YANGON, 1 June - A ceremony to confer certificates of the Diploma in
Buddha Dhamma for 2000-2001 academic year on the students of the
International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and welcome freshers
for 2001-2002 academic year was held at the university this morning,
attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt.

new monk students for
2001-2002 academic year, and Yogi scarves to new nun students and lay
persons. Afterwards, the Rector Sayadaw gave Ovadakatha and Sammodaniya
Sande-sakatha. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 inspected the library,
multimedia classrooms and construction of the library building. Later,
the Secretary-1 and party inspected construction of Convocation Dhammayon
of the State Pariyatti Sasana University (Yangon), and gave instructions

Khin Nyunt inspects construction of Drug Elimination Museum
YANGON, 1 June-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt inspected progress of construction work of the
Drug Elimination Museum at the corner of Hanthawady Road and Kyundaw
Road in Kamayut Township this evening.
The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development
Council Office, arrived at the construction site at 5.15 p.m. today.
They were welcomed there by ministers, chairmen and officials of Committee
for Construction of the Museum and work committees. First, the Secretary-1
inspected sculptures and paintings exhibited at the booth of the Central
Committee for Drug Abuse Control on the ground floor and first floor, and
arrangements for the opening of booths of Working Committees, Myanmar
Anti-Narcotics Association and Border Area Development Association on the
second floor. Officials concerned conducted the Secretary-1 around the
museum.
The Secretary-1 inspected landscaping work in the museum compound and
gave necessary instructions. The Secretary-1 and party left there
in the evening.

Sri Lanka to present Bodhi
Sapling to Myanmar
YANGON, 1 June - A Sri Lankan Buddhist delegation conveying Shri Maha
Bodhi Sapling or Dekkhinasaka Maha Bodhi Sapling in Myanmar will arrive
here on 7 June. The Sacred Bodhi Sapling will be planted on Mindhamma
Hill in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image
is being kept. Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura
Aung Ko met officials today and coordinated arrangements to receive
the Dekkhinasaka Maha Bodhi Sapling at Yangon International Airport with
profound respect and reverence and to carry and plant it onto the
Hill in accord with the religious tradition. Officials, technicians and
experts from various bodies including Adviser at State Peace and Development
Council Office U Arnt Maung sought ways to receive, convey and plant
the Sapling in accord with Theravada Buddhist practices. Deputy Minister
Brig-Gen. Thura Aung Ko gave the concluding remarks at the meeting which
was held at the briefing hall on the Hill.

ceremonies held in four districts in Yangon Division
YANGON, 1 June- Under the leadership of Yangon Division Peace and Development
Council, monsoon tree- planting ceremonies were held in four districts
of Yangon Division today.

Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung
Than attended the monsoon tree-planting ceremony on Htantabin short-cut
road linking Shwepyitha Bridge and Htantabin in Yangon North District;
Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa attended the ceremony at the corner of Mindhamma
and Parami Roads in Yangon West District; Deputy Commander Brig-Gen.
Hsan Hsint attended the ceremony in front of Eastern Yangon University
in Thanlyin, Yangon South District; and YCDC member U Aung Soe attended
the ceremony near Maso Bridge in Dagon Myothit (East) Township this
morning.
The tree-planting ceremony was opened at the pandal on Htantabin short-cut
road linking Shwepyitha Bridge and Htantabin in Yangon North District,
with an address by Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.
Also present were No 2 Military Region Commander Col Tin Oo Lwin, Deputy
Director-General of Forest Department U Shwe Kyaw, Secretary of Yangon

The commander and departmental officials planted trees. The commander
then viewed the collective tree-planting activity.
The monsoon tree-planting ceremony was held in front of Eastern Yangon
University in Thanlyin, Yangon South District.
Present were Deputy Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development
Council Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen. Hsan Hsint,
Commanding Officer Lt-Col Tin Hlaing Shwe of the local battalion,
officials, USDA members, teachers and local people numbering over 3,000.
The deputy commander, district and township authorities and local people
planted trees at designated places.
A total of 107,125 teak, ironwood trees, hard wood trees and winbreaks
have been planted for the greening of the district in Yangon South
District today.
A similar ceremony was held on both sides of No 2 Highway in Dagon Myothit
(South) Township.
Present were member of Yangon City Development Committee U Aung Soe,
heads of departments of YCDC, officials and employees totalling 1,000.
They grew shade trees and flowering plants on No 2 Highway from the
junction of Dagon Myothit (South) and (North) townships up to Maso Bridge.
During the 2001 monsoon season, YCDC, Forest Department, Myanma Railways
and Yangon Command will grow 1.7 million saplings in 33 townships
of YCDC area and 12 townships outside YCDC area, on both sides of
the ring railroad and at regiments and units under the control of Yangon
Command. Over 132,000 trees were planted today in the townships of
four districts in Yangon Division.

Than meets Yangon Division new generation soccer team
YANGON, 1 June- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman
of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon
Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than met athletes of Yangon Division new
generation soccer team (under 16 age) at meeting hall of South Okkalapa
Sports Ground today.
They are being trained under the programme of Yangon Division Peace
and Development Council. Present also were Deputy Commander Brig-Gen.
Hsan Hsint, Commander of No 2 Military Region Col Tin Oo Lwin, Secretary
of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, Chairman
of Yangon Division Football Sub-Committee U Phone Kyaw and members,
team managers and course instructors. Secretary of Yangon Division
Sports and Physical Education Committee U Tun Hla Aung introduced the athletes
to the commander. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than urged them
to become footballers representing the nation. U Phone Kyaw explained
facts about the team. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than attended to their
needs.
Customs Department holds third
four-monthly coordination meeting
YANGON, 1 June-The Customs Department of Ministry of Finance and Revenue
held the third four-monthly coordination meeting for 2000-2001 financial
year at Customs Training School this morning, attended by Minister
for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein. Also present were Deputy Minister
for Finance and Revenue Brig- Gen. Than Tun, Director-General of Customs
Department Lt-Col Khin Maung Lin, departmental officials, officials
of the CD offices of States and Divisions and guests. At the meeting, the
minister made a speech. Then, officials of States and Divisions discussed
matters related to work. The meeting concluded in the evening.
Commander attends htidaw
hoisting ceremony of Nyeinchan Thaya Pagoda in Waingmaw
YANGON, 1 June- The htidaw hoisting ceremony of Nyeinchan Thaya Shwepyidawaye
Hsutaung-pyi Pagoda was held at the pagoda in Manwein Village, Waing-maw
Township on 29 May morning. Present were Chairman of Kachin State
Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw
Win, Tatmadaw officers, members of Kachin State Peace and Development
Council, departmental officials, nationals of Kachin State Special
Region 1 and others. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Narada administered the Nine Precepts.
The Commander and party presented Shwehtidaw, Seinbudaw, Hnetmyatnadaw
and offertories to members of the Sangha. Members of the Sangha recited
the parittas. Then, the Commander and wellwishers shared the merits. At
the auspicious time, Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and officials hoisted the
htidaw atop the pagoda.. After the ceremony, Chairman of Kachin State
Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj- Gen Kyaw
Win cordially greeted members of the cultural troupe, wut associations
and guests.
New school building handed
over
YANGON, 1 June-A ceremony to hand over the new school building for No
29 Basic Education Primary School in Mingaladon Township, to the
Ministry of Education was held at the school this morning. The building
was built with the donation of Japan International Volunteer Association
(JVA).
Present at the ceremony were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy
Minister U Myo Nyunt, Director- General of Education Planning and Training
Department U Bo Win, Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department
U Tin Nyo, Director-General of No 3 BED (Yangon) U Tin Win, Chairman of
Myanmar Education Research Bureau U Myint Han, Chairman of Myanmar
Board of Examination Thura U Aung Tun, departmental heads, officials,
donor JVA Executive Managing Director Mr Teruo Masuda, teachers and students.
Director- General U Tin Win, Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori and
Executive Managing Director Mr Teruo
Masuda formally opened the building. Then, the minister unveiled the
stone inscription, and inspected the building. Ambassador Mr Shigeru
Tsumori and Mr Teruo Masuda explained the purpose of the donation. The
minister expressed words of thanks.
Mr Teruo Masuda handed over the documents related to the building to
Director-General U Tin Win, who presented certificates of honour
to him. Afterwards, Minister U Than Aung, Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori
and Mr Teruo Masuda exchanged souvenirs. It is the L-shaped reinforced
concrete one-storey building, 132 feet long and 75 feet wide. Japan
International Volunteer Association to Support Education and Welfare in
Asia Countries and Kawagoe Myooin Buddhist Temple donated US $ 45,360
for the building, fence, toilets, desks, benches and stationery.

(6) Minister inspects Thakayta
Salt Mill
YANGON, 1 June- Minister for Mines Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint attended Lot
Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) Course at Research Division and
Salt Mill (Thakayta) of Myanma Salt and Marine Chemicals Enterprise this
morning. Managing Director U Saw Win and officials welcomed the minister.
Then, the minister gave an opening address and inspected production
of magnesium hydroxide and oral rehydration salts. Entrepreneurs
of 17 salt mills in Yangon Division and officials are attending the LQAS
course.
Mayor attends tree planting
ceremony
YANGON, 1 June-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U
Ko Lay attended a tree-planting ceremony at the Agriculture and Livestock
Breeding Project in Uto-Kya-in region, Taikkyi Township, and observed
the tree-planting activity being carried out by local residents and members
of organisations.
The mayor planted a commemorative tree at the entrance of the Project.
Also present were Chairman of Uto-Kya-in Region Agriculture and Livestock
Breeding Committee member of YCDC Col Thaung Wai and heads of departments
concerned, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Than
and members, members of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association,
Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Society, Maternal and Child Welfare Association
and local people totalling over 300.
The mayor then inspected the growing of shady trees and flowering plants
at the golf course in the project area, and the planting of tamarind trees
and toddy palms in front of the Paddy, Vegetable and Fruit Research Centre,
and also planted a commemorative tree there. A total of 8,400 trees were
planted at the ceremony.
Similarly, led by YCDC Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win, members of Hline Township
USDA, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross Society and
Auxiliary Fire Brigade, teachers and students and local residents totalling
over 1,000 collectively planted 2,000 star-flower trees at the corner of
Mindhamma Road and Parami Road in Hline Township, Yangon West District.
Myanmar Medical Conference
to be held
YANGON, 1 June-The Myanmar Medical Association will hold 48th
Myanmar Medical Conference in Yangon in January 2002. Pre-conference of
members of Organizing Committee for holding the conference and medicine
and medical equipment representatives will be held at the hall of
MMA, No 249, Theinbyu Road, Mingala Taungnyunt Township, at 1 p.m. on 9

(7) Minister inspects construction
of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2
YANGON, 1 June- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied
by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Myint Thein, arrived at the construction site
of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2 this afternoon. In the briefing hall, Superintending
Engineer U Myint Lwin of Special Bridge Construction-1 reported on completion
of piers and future tasks.
The minister gave instructions on timely completion of tasks, close
supervision for work site safety, construction of piers of the main bridge,
storage of construction materials and heavy machinery, and fulfilled the
requirements of RCD driller, boats and machinery. The minister then inspected
piers of the bridge on Yangon bank, flooring of concrete and progress in
construction tasks on Thanlyin bank.
The bridge will link Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township and Thanlyin.
The six-lane bridge is of reinforced concrete and 4,540 feet long.
The bridge has a 72-foot-wide motorway and a six-foot wide pedestrian way
on both sides, with a clearance of 18 feet in height and 130 feet in breadth.
It can withstand 60-ton loads.
9th Standard Optional Subject
Selection Meeting Programme broadcast
YANGON, 1 June- Minister for Education U Than Aung, accompanied by Deputy
Minister U Myo Nyunt, watched the Ninth Standard Optional Subject Selection
Meeting Programme broadcast through Electronic Data Broadcasting System
at Basic Education High School No 2 in Sangyoung Township this afternoon.
Students and teachers watched the programme at e-Education Learning
Centres all over the nation at 10 am, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today. The programme
will be broadcast at the designated time on 2 and 3 June.
The subjects which should be learnt for any person will be broadcast
as the formal and non-formal education programmes with the use of Electronic
Data Broadcasting System. In Myanmar, 203 e-Education Learning Centres
have been opened.
26 wellwishers donate K 8.7m
for kidney patients
YANGON, 1 June- Wellwishers donated cash towards National Kidney Foundation
at the meeting hall of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) on Ziwaka
Road in Dagon Township this morning. The donations will be used for the
kidney transplant of four patients in local hospitals. Present on the occasion
were Deputy Minister for Health Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, departmental heads
and wellwishers.On behalf of the well-wishers, Vice-Chairman of Asia Wealth
Bank Ltd U Aik Tun explained the purpose of the donations. Today's donations
included K 1 million. Deputy Minister Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, Director-General
Dr Wan Maung of Health Department and Director-General Dr Paing Soe of
MRD (Lower Myanmar) accepted the donations and presented certificates of
honour to the wellwishers. Then, the deputy minister and kidney patient
Dr. Kyaw Kyaw Htay spoke words of thanks. Today's donations to the National
Kidney Foundation amounted to K 8.7
million and well-wishers continue to make more donations for the patients.

No-Tobacco Day in Mandalay
YANGON, 1 June- World No-Tobacco Day was observed at the Office of Mandalay
Division Union Solidarity and Development Association in Chanaye-thazan
Township yesterday morning. The ceremony was sponsored by Mandalay Division
Health Department and Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association.
Present were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council
Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, division, district and township
level departmental officials, Patron of Supervisory Committee for Mandalay
Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint, members
of USDA, Red Cross Brigade, Fire Brigade, MCWA, divisional Committee for
Women's Affairs, prize winners and guests. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint made
a speech on the occasion. The Commander and officials presented prizes
to the winners. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint attended the prize presenting
ceremony to mark World No-Tobacco Day at the Station hall of Mandalay Nanmyo.
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint also attended the ceremony to hand over tube-well
drillers and driller utilizing course held at the Division USDA office.
The Commander made a speech on the
occasion. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint presented documents related to
the drillers to officials of seven district USDAs. After the ceremony,
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected the drillers and related
machine tools.
Mandalay-Myitkyina Up-train derailed
YANGON, 1 June - The engine and four carriages of Mandalay-Myitkyina
Up-train No 41 of Myanma Railways under the Ministry of Rail Transportation
got derailed while passing through Hsintaw Creek Bridge No 159 between
Nyaungzin Village and Htantabin Village in Kantbalu Township at about 4.10
am this morning. The derailment was due to heavy rains and raging mountain
torrents. Shortly after the accident, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace
and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win
and Tatmadawmen, members of Red Cross Brigade and health workers arrived
at the scene and carried out rescue work. Minister for Rail Transportation
U Pan Aung and employees of Myanma Railways, Minister for Health Maj-
Gen Ket Sein and specialists, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and
Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and officials went to the scene this morning
and carried out rescue work. Due to the derailment, some passengers were
killed and some injured.

(9) Narcotic drug producers
jailed
YANGON, 1 June-Tachilek District Court punished two narcotic drug producers
giving them prison terms on 3 April this year. A combined team comprising
members of local intelligence unit and Tachilek Anti-Drug Squad, acting
on information, on 15 August 2000, searched the house of Daw Nan Hla of
Pahsatwanli Village, Tachilek Township, and seized 17,330 stimulant tablets,
4.8 kilos of Ephedrine crystal, one kilo of caffeine powder and 0.5 kilo
of colouring powder. Action was taken against Daw Nan Hla, 44, daughter
of U Sai Nwe of Pahsatwanli Village, Tachilek Township, and Sai Moun Kham,
24, son of U Nwe Kat under Section 15/16(B)/19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs
and Psychotropic Substances Law. Tachilek District Court heard the case
and sentenced the two to
10 years imprisonment each under Section 16 (B) and 20 years imprisonment
each under Section 19(A) to serve separately.
