(1) General Maung Aye inspects construction of Maei Creek Bridge

YANGON, 23 May-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, together with  Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen. Kyaw Than,  Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen  Aung Htwe, the ministers, senior military officers and officials of the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman's Office and departments, arrived at the construction site of Maei Creek Project in  Taungup Township this morning.

General Maung Aye and party were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Nwe, Deputy  Superintending Engineers of Public Works, engineers and departmental officials.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on the project, progress of work and construction of  Yangon-Kyaukphyu Road. Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe gave a supplementary report.

Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on boats of Inland Water Transport operating in  the region, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin on feasible study on construction  of dams near Maei Creek Bridge and its environs.

General Maung Aye then gave instructions. General Maung Aye and party inspected construction of Maei  Creek Bridge.

The bridge is situated at the junction of Taungup-Maei-Tattaung-Ann Road and Yangon-Kyaukphyu Road  and it also lies at the transport centre of Taungup, Ann, Yanbye and Kyauk-phyu Townships. The bridge  is 940 feet long and 24 feet wide. It has three-foot-wide walkways on both sides. The lower structure of the  bridge is reinforced concrete and the upper structure pre-stressed concrete. Eighty three per cent of the  project have been completed.

The sector of Yangon-Kyaukphyu Road from Taungup Township to Kyaukphyu Township is 117 miles  and six furlongs long. The road is being built in three sections Taungup-Maei section, Maei-
Sane/Khonmin section and Sane/Khonmin-Kyaukphyu section. Fourteen bridges will be constructed along  the road and Taungup Creek (Kaishay Bridge) and Hsarpyin Creek Bridge have been opened.

After inspecting the construction site, General Maung Aye and party went to Thandwe Township. They  arrived back here in the afternoon.

(2) General Maung Aye attends rice offering ceremony for Sarthintaiks in Sittway

YANGON, 23 May- A ceremony to donate rice to monasteries in Sittway, Rakhine State, was held at  Dekkhinayama Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Sittway, yesterday morning.

Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence  Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye offered rice and provisions to Sayadaws.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Rakhine State Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw of  Dekkhinayama Pariyatti Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Çanda and Sayadaws of 10
monasteries, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air)  Lt-Gen.  Kyaw Than, Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western  Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, the ministers, senior military officers, Vice-Chairman of Rakhine State  Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen. Phone Swe, heads of the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman’s Office and departments concerned, members of Rakhine State Peace and  Development Council and departmental officials.

The congregation opened the ceremony reciting Namo Tassa three times. Then, the General and party  took the Five Precepts and sought Ovadakatha from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Çanda.

Afterwards, the General and party donated rice and provisions to the Sayadaws of the respective
monasteries. Next, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Çanda delivered a sermon. The General and party shared merits  gained and recited Buddha Sasanam Çiram Titthatu three times.

(3) Cornerstone laid to build modern buildings in Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township

YANGON, 23 May - Cornerstone was laid to build modern buildings in Dagon Myothit Seikkan
Township here this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt.

First the Secretary-1 laid the casket containing nine kinds of jewels. Then, the Secretary-1 and ministers laid the cornerstone. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt laid the stone plaque and sprinkled scented water on the plaque, the casket and the cornerstone. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt then performed the rituals of  golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.

Before the ceremony, the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council heard a report on  architectural designs and other points related to the buildings presented by Deputy Minister for
Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Chief Engineer U Aung Kyee Myint of Public Works and officials.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt gave advice. From the observation tower, the Secretary-1 viewed the plot  where the buildings will be built.

Accompanied by the commander and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the  Secretary-1 arrived at Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association Building Project at the corner of  Waizayanta and Than-thuma roads in Thingangyun Township.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by Chairman of the Association U Khin Shwe and Central  Executive Committee members and officials. They were conducted around the project site by the  Association Chairman and officials. At the project hall, the Secretary-1 heard a report on formation of the  Association, its functions, architectural design of the building, the quality of construction materials and  construction work presented with audio-visual aids. The Secretary-1 gave suggestions.

(4) Minister for Industry-1 inspects factories 

YANGON, 23 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win and  officials inspected personal goods factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries in Thuwunna in  Thingangyun Township this morning.

The minister inspected production process of Pepsodent tooth paste. He gave instructions on production of  quality products and systematic inspection. The minister also inspected production of V5 Pepsodent tooth  paste, Thin powder, Myitzu hair lotion, machines and warehouses. The minister observed the products of  the factory and gave instructions on boosting production of the products. The minister and party inspected  soap factory No-2 in Thingangyun Township and Win Thuza Shop in South Okkapala Township. The  minister gave instructions on distribution of products to consumers at reasonable price.

Minister inspects e-English Summer Courses

YANGON, 23 May-Minister for Education U Than Aung, together with Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen.  Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, arrived at e-Education Learning Centre of No 1 BEHS, Kamayut  Township this morning.

The minister was welcomed there by Director-General of Higher Education Department (Lower
Myanmar) U Saw Lwin, Director-General of Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win,  Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department U Tin Nyo, Director-General of No 3 Basic  Education Department U Tin Win, Rector U Han Tin of Institute of Education (Yangon), Headmistress  Daw Shwe Shwe Mya and teachers.

The minister inspected English Language learning of the students at the centre. The minister also viewed  the learning of the students at the learning centres of No 2 BEHS, Sangyoung Township and No 2 BEHS,  Botahtaung Township, No 2 BEHS and gave necessary instructions.

Trainees for the course were limited due to the difficulty of seat. Those who cannot attend the present  course may take course No 2.

(5) Malaysian Minister arrives 

YANGON, 23 May-At the invitation of Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone of Ministry of Commerce, Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd Yassin of Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Malaysia  and wife and party arrived here this morning.

They were welcomed at the airport by Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Deputy Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan,  departmental heads, Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad bin Noh and officials.

Minister receives Malaysian counterpart 

YANGON, 23 May-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Office Brig-Gen. Abel
received Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd Yassin of Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer  Affairs, Malaysia, together with Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Muhammad bin Noh at his office at 1.30  p.m. today. Also present at the call were officials from respective department.

L&F Minister receives Malaysian counterpart

YANGON, 23 May-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Thein received
Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd Yassin of Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Malaysia and Malaysian entrepreneurs at his office at 3 p.m. today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Aung Thein, the directors-general and managing
directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry, head of office and officials.
 
Deputy Minister meets Indian Ambassador 

YANGON, 23 May-Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung met Ambassador of  India Mr Shyam Saran at the office of the minister for Home Affairs this afternoon. Also present at the  call were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Col Soe Win, Deputy Director-General of General Administration Department U Maung Win and Head of Office U Thet Tun.

(6) Billboards hailing MWVO Conference erected

YANGON, 23 May-A ceremony to erect a billboard hailing the Myanmar War Veteran Organization  Conference 2001 was held in front of the Defence Services Orthopaedic & Reconstructive Surgery  Hospital (500-bed) on Yangon-Pyay Road in Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Yangon North District Supervisory Committee for WVO Chairman of  District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Ma Tu, Acting Director of Information and Public  Relations Department U Than Tun, Secretary of District Peace and Development Council Maj Maung  Ngwe and party, members of Township Peace and Development Council, chairmen and executives of  Township WVOs, U Zin Aung of Mingaladon Township IPRD, district/township level departmental  officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar Police Force,  Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Myanmar Red Cross Society, students and local people totalling over 800. Lt-Col  San Ma Tu and Chairman of Township WVO Maj Mya Than (Retd) formally opened the billboard.

A similar ceremony was held in front of Thuwunna New Market in Thaton yesterday morning, attended  by Chairman of Thaton District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Aung and members, the  chairmen and members of Township Peace and Development Council, chairmen and executives of  Township WVOs, district/township level departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and  Development Association, MCWA, Women’s Affairs Committee, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Myanmar Red  Cross Society and local people totalling over 1000.

Lt-Col Tin Aung formally opened the billboard and the ceremony came to a close. A similar ceremony  was also held at the traffic lights in Minsu Ward, Loikaw yesterday morning. Chairman of Kayah State  Supervisory Committee for WVO Secretary of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Naing  Win and Chairman of Loikaw District Supervisory Committee for WVO Lt-Col Tin Tun formally opened  the billboard.
 
USDA membership applications presented

YANGON, 23 May- Member of Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development  Association Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint attended the closing ceremony of the Culture Course in Dagon  Myothit Seikkan Township, the presentation ceremony of membership applications and the cash donation  ceremony at the Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township Information and Public Relations Department this  afternoon.

The CEC member gave a speech. Executive of Yangon East District USDA U Soe Shein presented prizes  and certificates to respective trainees.  Then, Township USDA executive U Kyi Win accepted 520  membership applications. Afterwards, Director U Zaw Lin of Sports and Physical Education Department  presented K 1,000,000 donated by the Ministry of Sports for building Dagon Myothit Seikkan and Dagon  Myothit East Township USDA Offices to officials.

(7) Development tasks inspected in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 23 May- Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by departmental officials, inspected No 135 Basic  Education Primary School in Salay Village of Madaya Township on 22 May morning.

Then, the commander inspected greening tasks being carried out in the compound of the school by
members of Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Working Committee for Women’s Affairs, Union Solidarity and
Development Association and students.

Afterwards, the commander proceeded to Ingyinmyaing Village No 151 BEPS and inspected condition of  the school building, greening tasks and digging the well in the compound of the school.

On 23 May morning, the commander inspected cultivation of Shwethweyin strain summer paddy, green  pea and sugarcane plantations in Kyauksayittaung Village in Madaya Township.

A total of 30,102 acres of land have been put under summer paddy in the special zone of Madaya
Township.

At Tatmadaw Farming Training School in Sedawgyi region, the commander heard reports on poultry  farming and cultivation of perennial crops and vegetables. The commander inspected poultry farm and  goat breeding farm. In Sedawgyi Dam briefing hall, officials reported on water storage, irrigated  plantations and power supply. The commander inspected water flow into the dam and water gates.

At Sedawgyi Power Plant, the commander fulfilled the requirements and inspected the plant. Sedawgyi  Dam can store 120,400 acre feet and can irrigate 74,000 acres of summer paddy, 10,968 acres of summer  sesamum and 1,253 acres of pre-monsoon long-staple cotton.
 
Commander attends coord meeting of departments in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 23 May- Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann attended the coordination meeting to review tasks of  Ayeyawady Division in 2000-2001 fiscal year and to meet the target of tasks in 2001-2002 at the office of  the Division Peace and Development Council on 18 May morning.

The commander gave instructions on implementation of agriculture, livestock breeding and regional
development tasks and attended to their needs.

In the afternoon, the commander attended the Inter-District Under-21 Soccer Tournament at Kyauktaing  Sports Ground in Pathein.

In the final match, Pathein District beat Pyapon District 1-0. The commander and officials presented
prizes to outstanding players and teams.

Mayor inspects Thakayta Shukhintha Amusement Park

YANGON, 23 May-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay accompanied  by officials inspected Thakayta Shukhintha Amusement Park of Parks and Play grounds Department and  gave instructions and attended to the needs this morning. The mayor also inspected growing of shade  trees, maintenance of machines , cleanliness and attended to the requirements.

(8) 27 Myanmar cooperatives societies to participate in Kunming Trade Fair 2001

YANGON, 23 May - Twenty-seven Myanmar cooperatives will display gems, traditional handicrafts,  lacquer-ware, wood-work, gold embroidery and sculptures at Kunming Trade Fair 2001.

One-hundred-ten representatives of the cooperatives societies are planning to open 19 booths at the Fair  which will be held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, the People’s Republic of China, from 6 to 10 June.

The cooperatives societies should strive to broaden their international markets and win more customers  abroad, said Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San at his meeting with the representatives to the Fair.

Discipline is important to preserve the reputation of their organizations, the minister added. A represent  also gave a speech, pledging to take part in the Fair in accord with the minister’s advice.

Deputy Director of Cooperative Department U Kyaw Hlaing explained Myanmar cooperatives’
participation in the previous fairs and this year’s arrangements.

The meeting which was held at the Ministry of Cooperatives was also attended by Director-General of  Cooperative Department Col Soe Win, Director-General of Cottage Industries Department U Sein Than,  Managing Director of Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise Daw Khin Swe Soe and officials.
 
Auditor-General inspects accounts office in Rakhine, Chin States

YANGON, 23 May-Auditor-General Brig-Gen. Tin Aye and officials met officers of Sittway and
Maungtaw Districts, Mye-bon Yathedaung and Buthidaung Townships at Rakhine State Accounts Office  on 19 May. The Auditor-General went to Ponnagyun Township and met service personnel of Township  Accounts Office. He also met departmental officials in Paletwa Township in Chin State on 20 May. He  met officials and service personnel of Kyauktaw, Minbya and MraukU Townships on 19 May and fulfilled  the requirements.

(9) Third Leg of New Generation Age-wise Golf Tournament begins

YANGON, 23 May- The Third Leg of Han Golf Masters New Generation Age-wise Golf Tournament,  organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and mainly sponsored by Pan-West and Han Golf Masters Pte  Ltd, was held at Silvery Golf Course of Yangon City Development Committee this morning. After the first  round, Phone Myat Min Khaing was leading with 44 strokes in the under 10 age class. His runners-up  were Lin Moe Tun with 47, Ye Myat Win with 49, Zarni Htut with 50 and Than Zaw Htaik with 52. In  the 13-14 age class, Htein Win and Min Thura Aung fired 84 strokes each, Tun Lin with 85, Yan Naing  Phyo with 88 and Ye Kyaw Thu with 90. In the 11-12 age class, Yan Myo Aye scored 76 strokes, Nay  Bala Win Myint 80, Kaung Myat Win 86, Soe Moe Win 93 and Nyein Chan Soe 94. In the 15-17 age  class, Naing Naing Lin was leading with 75 strokes, Derek Htet Doe with 78, Thet Zaw Htwe with 80,  Phyo Teza Aung 80 and Nay Lin Tun with 81. In the girls' division, Hnin Marlar fired 101 strokes, Sandi  Toe Saung 104, Yadana Moe 104 and Yune Sandi 147. The tournament is being held with the aims of  turning out new generation golfers. Sponsors of the tournament are Canon, Wilson, Rapier (Australia),  City Golf Restaurant and Star Ice-cream. Academy Science Co Ltd and Sea Green Co Ltd presented prices
of honour to athletes. The second round continues tomorrow morning.
