(1) Failure to nature
youth to have clear national outlook will lead to end of their life
under uncertain circumstances
Greater
success, momentum gained in implementing national education
promotion programmes
YANGON, 18 May- Chairman of Myanmar Education
Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt delivered an address at the opening ceremony of
Special Refresher Course No 44 for Basic Education Teachers at
Nawarat Hall of the Central Institute of Civil Service in Hlegu
Township, Yangon Division, at 9 am today.
Also present on the occasion were ministers, the
Auditor-General, the Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and
Training Board, deputy ministers, senior military officers,
officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office,
departmental heads and trainee teachers.
Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee
Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen. Khin
Nyunt said the State is at present giving priority to the task of
enabling the entire national people including students to have
access to international level education and modern teaching
methodology and teaching aids to ensure that the Union of Myanmar
gets abreast of global nations.
The trainee teachers should attend the course,
adopting the attitude that it is being conducted with
excellent objectives to give them an opportunity to uplift their
qualifications necessary for the task of
implementing education promotion programmes.
The State Peace and Development Council has laid
down and systematically implemented the national objectives to make
harmonious progress in political, economic and social sectors in
developing Myanmar to be on a par with the countries in the world.
In the social sector, an important one for
national progress, special attention is being paid to improvement of
standard of health and education for emergence of education and
health systems that will help materialize the objective-Uplift of
health, fitness and education standard of the entire people.
At the opening ceremony of the Myanmar
International Studies Course No 2 of the Union Solidarity and
Development Association, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe gave
the following guidance:
"The educational, intellectual and social
abilities of citizens are the national power which guarantees the
nation's future. The citizens who have high hopes and conviction and
always bear in mind the interests of the Union and the people are
the nation's resources. Qualified citizens will have the calibre to
build a peaceful, pleasant and developed nation. Thus, human
resources which help promote the interests of the nation and the
people should be developed."
Greater success and momentum have been gained in
laying down and implementing national education-promotion programmes
in line with the Head of State' s guidance.
Just as there are changes and development
gathering high momentum in the world, so the role of human
invention, ability and intelligence is also becoming more and more
significant in applying and developing new technologies. Production
of human resources who have the ability to keep pace with the
advances in technologies is the main national requirement to get
access to and apply developing international technologies.
Rapid emergence of new technologies and
globalization has brought not only the scientific and
technological progress to the nations but also associations between
their social behaviours, social values, traditions and culture.
Under these circumstances, failure to nurture the
youth to have a clear national outlook will lead to the end of
their life because of uncertain desires, forlorn expectation,
uncertain ventures and wrong
enticements resulting from the repercussion of a plethora of
information data and cultural penetration.
It is required to train youth to understand and
value the Myanmar social norms such as loving kindness, sympathy,
kindness, politeness, compassion, nobility, the will to serve
others' interests, humanitarian duties and humanitarian codes of
conduct in protecting them against possessing wrong belief such as
assuming the material progress and wealth and undisciplined freedom
as modernization and development.
Teachers should train their pupils to know the
glory, nationalism, and national solidarity, which are the fine
traditions of Myanmar throughout the years countable by the
thousands, and to vitalize the family spirit or in other words the
Union Spirit.
Throughout the successive eras of history, the
national empires were founded during the times the
national solidarity was firm; and all the dangers harming when the
nation were crushed with the
consolidated force of the national people. Thus, teachers should
lead their pupils in all sectors including the education, social
and cultural sectors in enabling them to always keep in the fore the
past glories and the will to promote .their Myanmar spirit, the
unyielding spirit, the spirit of King Bayintnaung, the spirit to
root out all the enemies of the nation and the spirit of King
Alaungphaya.
Especially, they should be trained and organized
to have the active national spirit, the Union Spirit and the
spiritual development.
Under the circumstances, the national education
promotion programmes are being implemented to enable the education
sector to produce qualified human resources who will bring progress
to the nation to meet the most basic national a requirement.
Efforts should be made for the flourishing of an education system
which is able to apply the new science and technologies for the
national interests, to promote and propagate national culture and
national values, patriotism and Union Spirit.
As the education promotion programmes are being
implemented phase by phase, the education promotion plans which
meet international standard can be realized; the education promotion
plans will materialize the education system which will lead to the
all-round education and spiritual development of the students and
teaching system based on modern information technology.
Moreover, the national education promotion
special four-year plan designed to develop the basic education
sector and the higher education sector together has been implemented
beginning 2000. E-Education programmes are broadcast for students
through Satellite Data-Broadcasting System and can be received at
learning centres all over the nation, and Multimedia Resource
Centres, New Century Resource Centres and e-Library systems have
been established throughout the nation.
While the special four-year plans for development
of human resources are being implemented not only in the education
sector but also in the science and technological sector and the
health sector, Head of State Chairman of the State Peace and
Development Council Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance that in
connection with the tasks of the 30-year long-term plan to be
carried out in the agriculture sector, the forestry sector, the
fish and meat sector and the industrial sector, long-term plans are
to be drawn up in the transport, education and health sectors and
in the sector for development of border areas.
In accordance with the guidance of the Head of
State, arrangements have been made to implement a 30-year long-term
plan designed to establish an education system of international
standard, to turn out human resources who are capable of building
the nation into a peaceful, modern and developed nation and
safeguarding in to nurture the youths to become stalwart and mature
citizens imbued with Union Spirit and patriotism, to turn out
worthy citizens who are able to work for the development of the
entire human society and to establish a constant learning society.
Education promotion programmes, the national
education promotion special four-year plan and the 30 year
long-term plan for the basic education sector are being implemented
in accord with the guidance given by Head of State Senior General
Than Shwe with the aim of serving the perpetual interests of the
State and the people and enabling the Union of Myanmar to stand tall
in the world. Therefore, all the teachers are required to regard
this task as a national one and participate in it..
As greater success has been achieved in
implementing national education plans in order to equip the
youth of today who will shoulder the duties of the State in future,
with abilities in compliance with the
Myanma society, the national goal- the emergence of a peaceful,
modern and developed nation - will be achieved soon. It is
important for the teachers to know that their main duties in the
education sector coincide with national duties. All the teachers
are to adopt the attitude that they are discharging national
duties.
In order to turn out highly-qualified human
resources who can create the future Myanmar society, it is
imperative that teaching methodology needs to be keeping with the
times. So it is vitally important for the teachers to nurture and
train themselves.
As Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has
given guidance that systematic plans are to be formulated to carry
out development tasks for rural areas and border areas in
conjunction with other national development tasks, the rural
development plans have been set into motion.
The guidance of the Head of State covers the five
sectors important to development of rural areas - better transport
in rural areas, availability of cultivation water and hygienic
drinking water, improvement of education and health standard of
rural people and development of agriculture and livestock breeding
work.
The Secretary-1 urged all the teachers to see to
it by enlisting the support of the people that the buildings and
environment of basic education schools-which are important for the
uplift of education standard of rural people are in good condition,
that all the school-age children go to school, that schools are
equipped with pedagogic aids and that children continue to pursue
higher education.
To ensure the modernization and development of
the Union and to be able to get on with the process of
globalization which is talking place due to advances in
technologies, by keeping national interests intact are largely
depending on the endeavours made in the education sector. So all the
teachers are to try their best from the role assigned to them to
achieve the national education objectives.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 exhorted all the
teachers to study with the aim of successfully implementing the
education promotion programmes for development of human resources
who are vitally important to ensure the emergence of a peaceful
modern and developed nation and to enable the Union of Myanmar to
stand tall in the world, to organize the entire people including
students and youths to participate actively and unitedly in
building and safeguarding the nation with patriotic spirit, Union
Spirit and nationalistic spirit and to nurture the youths to be
imbued with the spirit of Alaungphaya who rooted out every enemy
and crush every danger in times of emergency for the country.
After the opening ceremony, the Secretary-l
cordially met trainee teachers and left the institute latter in the
morning.
Before the ceremony, the Secretary-l accepted

YANGON, 18 May - In the 18 May issues of the
Nation and the Bangkok Post published in Thailand, it is stated
that police yesterday rescued 30 hill tribe and Myanmar women who
were being held as sex slaves at two houses in Lat Phrao district.
The Crime Suppression Division's (CSD) 20-member
commando unit searched the isolated houses on the same compound
after receiving tip-offs from local residents.
In addition to the women aged between 20 and 25,
police also found six hill tribe men, allegedly hired by Kitti
Tochaicharoenporn, the owner of the houses, to guard the captives.
Police found Lhong, a 20 year-old Myanmar girl,
chained to a staircase when they raided the house. She told the
officers that she was chained up because she once attempted to
escape.
Her right ankle was bruised and swollen from
being shackled.
According to the findings of the initial
investigation, Kitti forced the girls to perform sexual services at
massage parlours, brothels and motels.
Most of the women had been captives inside the
homes for several months. Local residents contacted police after
becoming suspicious of all the visitors the houses attracted.
