(1) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image crowded with devotees

YANGON, 17 May- Members of the Sangha, people and tourists visited Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni  Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township today.

Stone sculptor Siri Sudhamma Manijotadhara Sayagyi U Taw Taw and SOD8 carried out the decoration work of  the Image. Employees of Public Works participated in the construction and decoration of Gandakuti  Kyaungdawgyi in which the Image is kept and southern and northern stairways and the retaining  walls. Greening  and beautifying tasks are being carried out at northern stairway and southern retaining wall. Similarly, preparatory  tasks for the garden are being undertaken at the plot south of Mindhamma Hill.

Handicraft technicians U Ohn Tin and group and U Hla Kyu and group decorated Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi. Wut  associations recited religious verses at the Image. Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Information open  book shops. Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon (Central) opens the souvenir shop Donations of  well-wishers amounted to K 181,551,215 at the funds-raising unit of the Image on Mindhamma Hill from 5 August to this evening.

(2) Press briefing on Mongyun region of Wa peace group in eastern Shan State held

YANGON, 17 May -A Press briefing on Mongyun region of Wa peace group in eastern Shan State was held at  Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road here this morning.

Officiating Head of  Department of the Office of  Strategic Studies Lt-Col San Pwint said delegates to  Ministerial  and Senior Officials Meetings of Signatory Countries to 1993 Memorandum of Understanding on Drug Control in  East Asia and Pacific Region and local and foreign journalists visited  Mongyun region of Wa peace group in  eastern Shan State on 13 May. The Press briefing was to recount what Wa national race leaders said to journalists  of news agencies and periodicals who were not included in the study team.

Lt-Col San Pwint briefed them on the background history of the region, regional development undertakings,  implementation of the task to completely rid the entire Wa region of  narcotic drugs in 2005, success in cultivating  seasonal and perennial opium substitute crops in Mongyun region, the  Thai media's irresponsible accusations that  Mongyun region was "a stimulant pill production area," and the objective conditions of the region which do not at  all tally with the irresponsible accusations.

He also said that the Wa national people have extended invitations to everyone to visit any place in their region at  any time under the government's permission.

Deputy Chief of OSS Deputy Director of Defence Service Intelligence of  the Ministry of Defence Maj-Gen Kyaw  Win and Lt-Col San Pwint replied to queries raised by the journalists.

The journalists also viewed the map showing the current situation of  the recaptured Pachee outpost and  the  documentaries on the planting of lychee in Wanhon region, development projects in Lwehsansaw and Mongyun  regions, reclaimed land in, Mongyun region, paddy warehouses which Thailand accusingly called drug refineries,  the Mongyun Conference Hall which Thailand accusingly called a five star hotel, the Mongyun Market which  Thailand accusingly called drug production department and the hydel power  station in Mongyun Township which  Thailand accusingly called a drug refinery.

Also present were Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Tin Win, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen.  Aung Thein, Brig-Gen. Khin Aung Myint of the Ministry of  Defence, heads of department  of OSS and officials.

(3) Commander inspects tube-well and buildings of BEPSs
 
YANGON, 17 May - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central  Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by departmental officials, inspected progress in  sinking of a tube well  in Shindawgon Village. Patheingyi Township on 15 May afternoon.

The commander then inspected buildings and area of  No 19 Basic Education Primary School in Shindawgon  Village and buildings of No 101 BEPS in Yway Su Village and fulfilled the requirements of the schools.

Shwehtidaw hoisted atop Razamuni Pagoda in Bokpyin 

YANGON, 17 May-The enshrinement, Shwehtidaw hoisting and consecration ceremony of Razamuni Pagoda  was held on Manizeya Hill in Bokpyin Township on 13 May morning.

Present were Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaw  Bhaddanta  Arcinnabhivamsa and Sayadaws, Chairman of  Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander  of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen. Aye Kyway, officials, well-wishers and local people.

The congregation took the Nine Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Arcinnabhivamsa. Then, the commander and  officials offered Seinbudaw, Hngetmyat-nadaw, tiers of  Shwehtidaw and alms to Sayadaws.

The commander and party kept religious objects in the reliquary and hoisted the Seinbudaw, the Hngetmyatnadaw  and tiers of  Shwehtidaw atop the pagoda.

The commander then performed the rituals of silver and golden showers to mark the success of  the ceremony.

The pagoda and religious buildings were built at a cost of  K 23.65 million.

In the afternoon, the commander attended the enshrinement ceremony of Atula Dipati Reclining Buddha Image on  Dhamma Rekkhita Hill in Bokpyin Township. Then, the commander and party kept religious objects into the  reliquary.
 
USDA basic computer application course opens

YANGON, 17 May - Ayeyawady Division Union Solidarity and Development Association opened Basic  Computer Application Course No 2/2001 at its office on 14 May morning.

Present were Chairman of  Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West   Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Tint Swe and senior military officers,  division-level departmental officials, members of USDA, course instructors,  trainees and guests.

The commander made a speech.

The commander also attended the opening ceremony of the all-round development course for girls  conducted by  Ayeyawady Division Working Committee for Women' s Affairs.

Next, the commander attended the meeting of  Myanma Agricultural Development Bank on assessment of work  performance in Ayeyawady Division in 2000 and 2001 and implementation of the tasks to  meet the target.

Manager of Ayeyawady Division of  MADB U Maung Maung Swe Thein reported on measures to be taken to meet  the target.

The commander attended to requirements.

Shan State Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference held 

YANGON, 17 May-The Shan State Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference was held at City  Hall in  Taunggyi, Shan State (South), on 15 May afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern  Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, military officers, depart mental officials, members of  Union Solidarity and  Development Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Red Cross Brigade and traditional medicine  practitioners from 21 townships in Shan State (South).

Traditional medicine practitioner U Bo Gyi of  Pyilon Chantha Clinic chaired the conference.

The commander gave a speech.

Then, a general round of  discussions followed.

The conference approved the four resolutions of the representatives.

After the ceremony, the commander and party viewed traditional medicines and raw materials displayed by  traditional clinics.

Fire Fighting, Red Cross Training Courses conclude

YANGON, 17 May-The concluding ceremony of Pre-Basic Fire Fighting Course of Khin-U and Ye-U  Townships, Auxiliary Fire Brigade Refresher Course of  Taze Township and Basic Red Cross Training Course was  held in the. sports ground of Taze Township, Shwebo District on 14 May morning.

Present were Chairman of  Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West  Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, division, district and township level departmental officials,  trainees and guests.

Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win made a speech.

(4) Minister receives foreign guests

YANGON, 17 May-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone received Director Mr Mahesh Kumar of Mahesh  Co Ltd, Singapore at 9 am and Mr Gazi Shai Fullah of Lion Traders Co Ltd, Bangladesh at 10 am at his office: on  Strand Road, here today separately.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U  Nyunt Aye and responsible officials from the ministry.

Meeting on Myanmar-Laos border trade held in Kengtung

YANGON, 17 May-At the invitation of Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, a 15member delegation led  by Minister of Commerce and Tourism of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Phoumy Thipphavone arrived  at Tachilek on May 14 to attend Meeting on Myanmar-Laos Border Trade to be held in Kengtung.

They were welcomed there by Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Director-General of Border Trade  Department U Nay  Win, Chairman of Tachilek District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thet Naing Win, departmental heads  and officials.

Then, Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone and Laotian delegation left Tachilek and arrived in Kengtung at 11 am. There  the delegation met Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle  Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein.

In the evening, the delegation visited Maha Myatmuni Pagoda and Standing Buddha Image and made donations. They also visited Cultural Mu seum and Thitdabin Hill.

The meeting was held at Kengtung on 15 May morning, attended by Myanmar delegation led by Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone and Laotian delegation led by Mr Phoumy Thipphavone. Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone said that it  was the first ministerial meeting held according to Memorandum of  Understanding signed in Vientiane during the  goodwill visit of Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye in 2000. He also  spoke of bilateral border trade promotion. The Laotian Minister also made a speech. Then, the two delegation  discussed matters related to progress of border trade; exhibition of bilateral trade fairs, designating sites for trade
and others. In the evening, Minister  Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone hosted a dinner in honour of the two delegations. Shan  State Cultural Troupe presented variety dances.

A ceremony to sign minutes of bilateral border trade was held. Minister Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone and  the Laotian  Minister signed minutes and exchanged related documents.

(5) Minister inspects construction of bridges and roads in Rakhine State, Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 17 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen.  Myint Thein and officials, inspected construction of Ma-I Bridge on Ma-I-Kyaukphyu Road  in Rakhine State on  14 May morning.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Tin Htut reported on the building of the bridge. The minister gave instructions  on timely completion of the bridge, the minimizing of loss and wastage and systematic supervision work.

Then, the minister left there for Minkyaung Creek Bridge by boat.

Ma-I Bridge, 940 feet long, is being built of reinforced concrete and will be able to support 60 ton  loads.

At the construction site of  Minkyaung Creek Bridge, Senior Engineer U Tin Soe reported on construction of the  approach road, the approach bridge and the main bridge and the condition of  construction materials and  machinery.

The minister attended to requirements. Minkyaung Creek Bridge, 1,900 feet long, is being built of reinforced  concrete and will be able to withstand 60-ton loads. The minister and party left for Tanlwe Creek Bridge Project by  car and spent the night there.

On 15 May morning, the minister and party left the project site and inspected Taungup-Okshitpin Road.

The minister and party arrived at the camp of Backye Public Works Special Group-2.

On 16 May morning, the minister and party went to the construction site of Backye-Yekyi-Ngathaingchaung-Kankalay Road.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Tin reported on progress of construction work.

The minister gave instructions on the work.

The minister and party proceeded to the construction site of Thegon Bridge No 1/79 on Yangon-Pathein- Kyaukgon-Kankalay Road.

Pathein District Senior Engineer U Myint Thein reported on construction of the foundation and approach roads of  the bridge. The minister called for timely completion of the project.

Afterwards, the minister inspected repairs of  Kankalay-Kyaunggon-Nyaungdon Road and went to the project site  of  Nyaungdon Road Special Group-4. Superintending Engineer of Ayeyawady Division U Ye Myint Swe and  officials re ported on repairs of  Kankalay-Nyaungdon Road, progress of construction work and availability of  construction materials. The minister called on the officials to complete the project as soon as possible.
 
Minister presents cash to Good Public Service Medals recipient personnel

YANGON, 17 May - A ceremony to present cash awards to Good Public Service Medal recipient service  personnel of the Ministry of Religious Affairs was held in conjunction with the ceremony to provide stipends for  employees at Wizaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin on KabaAye Hill yesterday.

Present were Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General Dr Myo Myint of Religious Affairs  Department, Pro-Rector (Admin) of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University  Dr Hla Pe,  Deputy Director-General U Chit Khin of  RAD and officials. The minister presented cash to 10 personnel who  were awarded Good Public Service Medals and K 620,800 as stipends to staff families. The ceremony ended with  concluding remarks by the minister.

Third Meeting of AMEICC Working Group on SME/SI/RI-WG begins

YANGON, 17 May-The opening ceremony of the Third Meeting of the AMEICC Working Group on SME/SI/RI-WG was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.
 
Present were Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U  Khin Maung Win, heads of  department, Deputy Minister of  Production  State Ministry of Cooperatives & SMEs  Mr Iyan Muchtar Effendi of Indonesia, Director of Ministry of Economy Trade & Industry MEIT Mr Kentaro  Hayashi of Japan, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat,  representatives of Japan Oversea Development Cooperation  JODC and ASEAN countries and guests.  Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw made a speech.
 
After the opening ceremony, the meeting was held. The meeting continues tomorrow.
 
Ancient pagodas in Meiktila inspected

YANGON, 17 May - Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, accompanied by Deputy Director-General of  Department of Archaeology (Upper Myanmar) U Tun Zaw, Deputy Director-General of Department of  Archaeology (Lower Myanmar) U Aung Kyaing, Rector of University of Culture (Yangon) U Tin Soe and officials,  arrived at the guests house of No 99 Light Infantry Division in Meiktila on 15 May morning.

They were welcomed by Commander of No 99 LID Brig-Gen. Htay Oo and officials.

The deputy minister inspected 75 pagodas in Montaing Village, Meiktila in the afternoon. Director of Department  of Archaeology (Upper Myanmar) U Wai Lwin explained the renovation of the pagodas.  The deputy minister gave  instructions to officials.

The deputy minister inspected No 35 Shwetaunggyi Pagoda and gave suggestions on renovation of seintaungpan, palepan and wall painting at the pagoda.

Then, the deputy minister inspected. No 13 Shwebontha pagoda.

The deputy minister and party inspected ShweUmin cave pagoda renovated by Commander Brig-Gen. Htay Oo and  wife and families of No 99 LID. The deputy minister gave instructions to officials.

(6)  MNWCWA holds coordination meeting

YANGON, 17 May- Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs held the Meeting No 2/2001 at  the meeting hall of Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's  Affairs Deputy  Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Hlaing Win, Vice-Chairperson Prof  Daw May May Yee,  member Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Advisers Daw Khin Than Nwe, Daw Khin Cho Oo and advisers and officials.

The chairman gave a speech.

Then, the vice-chairperson reported on the project for holding the Myanmar Women's Day in the entire nation on 3  July 2001. Director of SWD U Khin Aung reported on tasks carried out by the committee.

Next, heads of working groups for Education, Health, Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation,  Economy, Culture, Girls and .Adults, Environmental Conservation and Information  reported on matters related to their respective sectors.

Those present took part in the discussions. Then, the chairman gave the concluding remarks.

Mayor tours Uto-Kyain region

YANGON, 17 May- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by  officials, inspected agricultural and livestock breeding tasks in Uto-Kyain Region Agriculture and. Livestock  Breeding Project area in Taikkyi Township this morning.

The mayor arrived at the project area in Intwingyi area where 1,000 acres of land are being reclaimed. Officials  reported on land reclamation and cultivation of monsoon paddy in the farm land. The mayor gave instructions on  construction of rural development road to link Taikkyi-Kyain road with Takhwa and Zigon villages, use of  machinery and digging of feeder canals and drainage in the reclaimed lands.

Then, the mayor inspected extended cultivation of green gram and green pea on the reclaimed land.

Afterwards, the mayor proceeded to goat breeding farm of Veterinary & Slaughterhouses Department  and gave  instructions on extended breeding of goats, measures for prevention of disease and cleanliness of the farm.

(7) 14th UMEHL gem  jade sale

YANGON, 17 May - Ninety foreign merchants and 337 local traders inspected gem and jade lots at third day.  sale of Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited today.  UMEHL Managing Director Brig-Gen. Win Hlaing  and members of the Board of  Directors attended the 14th sale of the Holdings. It is being held at Gems Mart from  9 am to 5 p.m. daily till 20 May.

Minutes of meeting on improvement of water supply system signed

YANGON, 1 7 May - A ceremony to sign the minutes of the work coordination meeting on  improvement of  water supply system in Yangon City, Mandalay City and the dry regions of  Central Myanmar was held at the City  Hall this morning.

The meeting was organized by Yangon City Development Committee, Mandalay City Development Committee,  Development Affairs Department and Japan International Cooperation Agency Study Team  Joint Secretary of  YCDC U Kyi Win made an opening speech. Director-General of Development Affairs Department Col Myo Myint,  Head of Engineering Department (Water and Sanitation) of MCDC U Tun Kyi and Mr Kazufumi Momose and Mr  Masayuki Taguchi of  Japan International Cooperation Agency Study Team spoke on the occasion.

Head of Engineering Department (Water and Sanitation) of YCDC U Thaung Yin and Mr Kazufumi Momose  signed the minutes of the meeting on improvement of water supply system in Yangon City.

Director-General Col Myo Myint, Head of Engineering Department (Water and Sanitation) of MCDC U Tun Kyi  and Mr Masayuki Taguchi signed the minutes of the meeting on improvement of water supply  system in Mandalay  City and dry regions of Central Myanmar.

Then, they exchanged related documents. Also present on the occasion were member of YCDC Col Tin Soe, Head  of Engineering Department (Building) of YCDC U Zaw Win and officials of YCDC, MCDC, DAD and Japan  International Cooperation Agency Study Team.
 
Billboard hailing WVO Conference erected

YANGON, 17 May-A ceremony to erect the billboard hailing the War Veterans Organization Conference 2001  was held at Mahabandoola Street, Pathein in Ayeyawady Division this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Ayeyawady Division WVO Secretary of Ayeyawady Division Peace and  Development Council Lt-Col Sein Maung, Chairman of Pathein District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col  Maung Pyone, members of USDA, division/district/town ship WVO members, members of Auxiliary Fire Brigade,  Red Cross Society and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs and local people totalling over  1500.

Lt-Col Sein Maung, Lt-Col Maung Pyone and Secretary U Than Tun of the division USDA formally unveiled the  billboard and the ceremony came to a close.

Trainees of Aviation Course visit Yangon

YANGON, 17 May- Trainees of Aviation Course for New Generation from Toungoo, Namhsan and  Meiktila  camps, co-organized by the Union Solidarity and Development Association and  Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s  Office, accompanied by officials of the Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s  Office and Toungoo, Namhsan and Meiktika  District and Township USDAs, visited Mingaladon Air Base this morning. The trainees observed the building of  aircraft and its capabilities. Officials conducted them round the air base. The trainees then viewed Yangon City by  Tatmadaw aircraft.  In the afternoon, the trainees visited Myanma Radio and Television. Next, they visited the
Defence Services Museum. In the evening, they visited Thaketa Amusement Park.

(8)   Minister attends Myanmar-China (Yunnan) goodwill women's volleyball tournament

YANGON, 17 May-The opening ceremony of Myanmar-China (Yunnan) goodwill women's volleyball  tournament was held at National Indoor Stadium in Thuwunna this evening.

Present were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint, Vice-Chairmen Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo and Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen. Mya Thein  Han, panel of patrons members of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, Ambassador of the People' s Republic of  China Mr Li Jinjun and embassy staff, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung  Htaik and officials, President of Myanmar  Volleyball Federation U Tun Myint Naing, officials of Defence Service
Volleyball Committee and guests.

Minister for Sports Brig-Gen. Thura Aye Myint, Ambassador Mr Li linjun, the Director-General and the  President  of MVF cordially greeted the athletes of  Myanmar and China.

The athletes of Myanmar and China exchanged commemorative pennants and flowers.

Then, the first match of goodwill tournament was played.

The China (Yunnan) women' s volleyball team beat Myanmar team with 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15.

The second match will be held on 19 May.

(9) Stimulant pill makers arrested

YANGON, 17 May- A combined team comprising members of the local Tatmadawmen, local  intelligence unit  and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Aik Yee, 45, of  Lunkyine Village in  Haung Leit Village-tract, Tachilek Township and found 6 kilos of  stimulant powder, a China-made modern  machine used for production of  stimulants pills, 26 moulds bearing the word "WY" and one motor in the basement  under the kitchen of the house, and a Toyota Corolla with  number plate 7 Ka/ 9808 in the room of the house on 20  October evening.

The authorities also searched another house of Aik Yee in San Sai (Lower) Ward and found his wife Daw Ei  Kham, 41, there and 2 packets of caffeine weighing 22 kilos in the basement of the house.  The Tachilek police  station booked them under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
