(1) Special Vegetable and Poultry Farming Zones being set up to supply adequate food to Yangon City

Senior General Than Shwe insptes Special Vegetable and Poultry Farming Zones in
Hmawby

YANGON, 15 May- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected Special Vegetable and Poultry Farming Zone at Nyaunghnapin Village in Hmawby Township today.

Accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, senior military officers and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office arrived at the farm at 9 am.

On arrival at Taing Myan Kyaw Poultry Farm of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council at the Special Vegetable and Poultry Farming Zone 1, the Senior General and party were welcomed by Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, deputy  ministers and officials.

After inspecting the raising of 10,000 chickens under battery cage breeding system at the farm, the Senior General gave guidance to officials.

At Hmawby Hsan Hall of the Farming Zone, the Senior General heard a report on initiation of the Farming Zone on 16 May 2000, its location, situation of transport links, allotment of land plots, land reclamation, progress in conducting agriculture and livestock breeding, roads in the Farming Zone, installation of water and power supply facilities to the Zone, formation of supervisory bodies at different levels and work implementation presented by Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and plans to build a dam on Kalihtaw Creek and supply water to the Farming Zone 1 through the right feeder canal of Ngamoeyeik Dam presented by Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint..

In giving guidance, the Senior General said the Special Vegetable and Poultry Farming Zone was set up to ensure adequate supply of kitchen crops and meat and fish to city dwellers of Yangon at reasonable prices. It is required to make plans based on the growing population of Yangon City in the future. The Special Vegetable and Poultry Farming Zones are being set up as the present kitchen crops and meat and fish supply sources are not enough for the Rangoon's  growing population in the future. Thus, the Farming Zones should give priority to vegetable cultivation. Efforts should be made to fully utilize the allotted plots soonest.

From the observation tower, the Senior General and party inspected vegetable fields and cultivation.

They then inspected crops produced by private farms and quality seeds being distributed by Marlarmyaing Enterprise Ltd in Hmawby Hsan Hall.

At the vegetable farm of Aung Engineering Company and Myanmar Agropeace Group at the Farming Zone 1, they inspected computerized watering system and green house cultivation.

The Senior General and party then inspected private crop fields and mechanized land reclamation in the Farming Zone.

At the Special Zone 2, they observed mechanized land reclamation and croplands from the tower.

During inspection of the vegetable farm of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, the Senior General heard a report on building roads in the Zone 3, progress in building of Hsatthwadaw-Kyakansu section, and Kyakansu-No 3 Highway section which are the main sectors of Yangon-Ngazutaung-Bago Highway presented by Minister Col Thein Nyunt.

The Senior General gave guidance on work.

Senior General Than Shwe and party viewed crop plantations and cultivation of crops from the observation tower of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs.

Senior General Than Shwe and party went to the briefing hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung reported on cultivation and livestock breeding in Yangon Division, sale to tax-free markets, cultivation of vegetables on 100 acres of lands in the special zone and availability of water.

Senior General Than Shwe and party went to the briefing hall of the Ministry of Energy. Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi reported on poultry farming, cultivation of vegetables on 60 acres of lands in the special zone and availability of water.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on the road to plantations of the ministry and cultivation. Senior General Than Shwe then gave necessary guidance.

Senior General Than Shwe inspected crops of the plantation of the Ministry of Electric Power.

Senior General Than Shwe and party proceeded to training hall of Myanma Agriculture Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in the special zone. Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint reported on implementation of the guidance given by Senior General Than Shwe, measures undertaken for availability of water, distribution of quality strains, dissemination of techniques, control of pesticide, sale of agricultural implements, cultivation of vegetables and income.

In his guidance, Senior General Than Shwe said a diversion weir is to be built on Ahtaru Creek as soon as possible for availability of water in the special zone and Kalihtaw Dam Project is to be implemented.

He also gave guidance on conducting of feasibility study for large irrigated areas of clusters of dams such as Kalihtaw Dam, Alaini Dam, Lagunpyin Dam and Ngamoeyeik Dam in the region.

Senior General Than Shwe and party went to a Basic Education Middle School under construction in the special zone. Military Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Brig-Gen Nay Win reported on construction of the school.

There are nearly 10,000 acres in vegetable cultivation and livestock breeding special zone near Nyaunghnapin Village in Hmawby Township. Vegetables are grown on over 6,000 acres of lands and there are 1,500 acres of livestock breeding farms. Fish ponds are being dug in low-lying areas.

Eighty miles of the roads are paved with laterite, 11 KV line that supplies power in the zone is 22 miles and 400-volt power line 80 miles. Altogether 13 transformers are installed in the zone. Ngamoeyeik Dam supplies water to the zone through canals. Arrangements are being made for availability of water
based on water resources.

Tasks for building of roads, power supply and availability of water are being carried out. Kitchen crops are cultivated on over 2,600 acres of lands out of over 6,000 acres. Poultry farming and fish breeding are also being undertaken.

(2) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Vietnam

YANGON, 15 May? On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Ambassador of Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, who had completed his tour of duty, at the Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

Laotian delegation leaves for home

Member of Politburo of Party Central Committee and Chairman of Party Central Committee Organizing Board Mr Thongsing Thammavong of Lao People?s Democractic Republic and wife and party, who visited Myanmar at the invitation of Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Vice-Chairman of Union Solidarity and Development Association Lt-Gen Win Myint, left here by air this morning. The Laotian guests were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-General of USDA U Than Aung, members of Central Executive Committee of USDA U Than Shwe and Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin and wife Dr Daw Khin San Nwe, Ambassador of Lao PDR Mr Ly Bounkham and wife, officials of USDA Headquarters and members of North Okkalapa Township USDA.

Minister receives Japanese guest

YANGON, 15 May-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt received President of Karamosia International, Japan and Resident Representative of Karamosia International in Yangon Mr Kenichi Kato at his office at 4 pm today.Ê Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Than Swe and the President signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wa Region Development Project in Mongphyat, Southern Wa Region. Also present at the call were Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Than Swe and officials.

(3) Minister U Khin Maung Thein arrives back from ADB annual meeting

YANGON, 15 May - The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein arrived back here by air yesterday evening after attending the 34th annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank Board of Governors in Honolulu of the United States of America from 9 to 11 May 2001.

The minister and party were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry of Finance and Revenue and families.

A ceremony to open the ADB Board of Governors? Thirty-fourth Annual Meeting was held at the Convention Centre in Honolulu, US, on 9 May morning. Present were finance ministers, governors and delegation members of 59 ADB member countries and delegates of private banks.

At the meeting, President of ADB Mr Tadao Chino delivered an opening address.

On 10 May, Minister U Khin Maung Thein gave a speech. The minister elaborated on economic and financial development in Asia and the Pacific region, agriculture, industry, construction and economic tasks being implemented in accord with the programmes in the entire nation including border areas with a view to ensuring development of the country, step-by-step efforts for  systematic development of Information Technology in line with the international pace, promotion of private sector participation in the nation's economy. The minister said development projects are being successfully implemented with State's financial resources. On 11 May, the meeting came to a close.

While in Honolulu, the minister and party called on President of ADB Mr Tadao Chino and cordially discussed cooperation matters.

On 9 May evening, a coordination meeting between finance ministers of 10 ASEAN member nations and those of Japan, China and South Korea was held at Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu. ASEAN finance ministers, ASEAN Secretary-General Mr Severino Jr and finance ministers of Japan, China and South Korea discussed to enhance cooperation in monetary sector between ASEAN countries and Japan, China and South Korea. Then, finance ministers of ASEAN countries and Japan, China and South Korea held a press conference.

Similarly, the Minister for Finance and Revenue and party met Director-General YS Abdulai and party of OPEC Fund, Managing Director Mr A Okuhata and party of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi of Japan, Managing Director Mr Y Tayama and party of Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company of Japan and Chairman Mr Inokuchi and party of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Company of Japan and discussed
cooperation matters. Members of the delegation Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Director U Nyo Myint, Research Officer Daw Khin Thida Maw, representatives of private banks Chairman of Tun Foundation Bank Ltd U Thein Tun, Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Aung Ko Win and Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Oriental Bank Ltd U Myat Kyaw also arrived back on the same flight.

(4) SRV delegation calls on Deputy Minister for Information

YANGON, 15 May- Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein received Deputy Director Mr Le Dinh Canh of Radio the Voice of Vietnam and party at the hall of Myanma Radio and Television at 10 am today. Also present at the call were Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, Managing Director of Printing and Publishing Enterprise Col Myint Thein, Deputy Director-General of MRTV Lt-Col Thein Aung, Director (Admin) U Phone Myint, Adviser of the ministry U Kyaw Min and Head of Office Capt Soe Aung.

Vietnamese delegation tours Yangon

YANGON, 15 May- A four-member delegation led by Deputy Director Mr Le Dinh Canh of Radio the Voice of Vietnam, together with officials, visited the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning. Then, the delegates, Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay and officials held discussions on broadcasting services and mutual interests between the two countries at 11.15 am at the hall of MRTV. The delegates then studied the broadcasting services and had documentary photo taken. In the afternoon, they visited Myanma Gems Museum, Myanma Gems Enterprise and National Museum. Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein hosted a dinner in their honour at Karaweik
Palace.

Eighth Meeting of ASEAN SME Agencies Working Group begins

YANGON, 15 May- A ceremony to open the Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN SME Agencies Working Group, hosted by Myanmar, was held at the Traders Hotel this morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Chairman of the meeting Deputy Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Mr Iyan Muchtar Effendi of Indonesia, delegates of ASEAN member nations and guests. Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the meeting Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw extended greetings to the guests. Then, Deputy Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Mr Iyan Muchtar Effendi of Indonesia gave an address. Afterwards, a general round of discussions of the meeting followed. The meeting continues tomorrow.

(5) Minister inspects Ahlon Shipyard, Institute of Marine Technology

YANGON, 15 May-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Minister U Pe Than arrived at Ahlon Shipyard of Inland Water Transport this morning. Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint and officials reported on major and minor repair of vessels and cargo barges, targets and implementation and spare parts. The minister gave instructions on building of new ships and extending of the shipyard to be a dry one. The minister inspected docking of ships. The minister and party went to Institute of Marine Technology on Bayintnaung Road and inspected courses on APRA, first aid, marine diesel and tanker familiarization. Principal U Win Thein and course instructors reported on the courses. The minister inspected the classrooms.

Minister inspects railway stations, roads, bridges

YANGON, 15 May- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by officials, inspected maintenance of railroads and bridges along Yangon-Mandalay line on 13 May. At Bago Station, the minister inspected line-clearing points and connection of rail tracks and gave necessary instructions.Then, the minister inspected Pyuntaza Station. The minister inspected bridges along Yangon-Mandalay Railroad and gave instructions on repair and maintenance tasks to be planned. At Toungoo Station, theminister met officials. Yesterday morning, the minister met Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Managing Director Col Min Swe of Myanma Railways, engineers and technicians and gave instructions on  timely completion of Mandalay Railway Station for the opening ceremony. The minister gave instructions on opening of shops on second floor, office rooms on third floor, hotels on fourth, fifth and sixth floors and inspected setting in rooms on third floor of Mandalay Station and preparatory tasks. Then, the minister inspected boarding room and ticket sale units on first floor of the Station and gave necessary instructions.

(6) All-round construction works expedited at Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 15 May-The Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image at Mindhamma hill was crowded with members of the Sangha, devotees, pilgrims from far and wide today. Stone Sculptor Thiri Thudhamma Manijotadhara U Taw Taw and sons continued putting finishing touches of the image. Engineers, workers of Buildings Construction Project Special Group-2 of Public Works continued construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi and Southern and Northern stairways. Staff of Irrigation Department has been doing greening tasks around the hill and those wishing to donate flower plants can buy nurseries at the nursery near the hill. Decoration works were carried out by Myanmar handicraft technicians U Ohn Tin and group, and U Hla Kyu and group. Wut associations recited parittas from morning till evening daily in turn. Bookshops of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, News and Periodicals Enterprise and Sarpay Beikman sold various kinds of books on knowledge and aesthetics. Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon (Central) also opened a souvenir shop. Devotees, pilgrims, members of the Sangha from far and near paid obeisance and donated cash to the image. Donation Centre opens daily and donations made by the public have climbed up to K 180,950,903 from 5 August 2000 to date.

Psychological test for athletes held

YANGON, 15 May- The psychological test for Myanmar selected athletes who will take part in the XXI SEA Games was held at the meeting hall of Aung San Stadium yesterday evening. Present were Chairman of Myanma Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Lecturer of Psychology Department of Yangon University U Aung Than Oo, Demonstrator U Tun Aung and tentatively selected Myanmar weightlifters.  Lecturer U Aung Than Oo tested the weightlifters. Similarly, Director-General U Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education Department, officials of the Directorate of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence and Lecturer U Aung Myat Kyaw Sein of Psychology Department of YU tested tentatively selected Myanmar archers at Kyaikkasan Grounds. Likewise, Deputy Director-General U Thein Aung of SPED, officials of Directorate of Medical Services and Lecturer U Tin Maung Hla performed test for tentatively selected Myanmar marksmen at the shooting range of Myanmar Shooting Federation in South Okkalapa. More psychological tests will soon be conducted.

Billboards hailing WVO Conference 2001 erected

YANGON, 15 May-Ceremonies to erect the billboards hailing War Veterans Organization Conference 2001 were held in Thingangyun and Mingala Taungnyunt townships in Yangon East District and Mayangon, Dagon and Bahan townships in Yangon West District this morning. The ceremonies were attended by officials of Township Peace and Development Councils, members of WVO, Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Society and local people. Similar ceremonies were held in front of Mandalay Division USDA office in Chanayethazan Township and near the clock tower of Zaygyo Market, at the corner of 26th Street and 84th Street this morning.

(7) Committee to Ensure Victory in Sports holds co-ord meeting

YANGON, 15 May- The Committee to Ensure Victory in Sports held the coordination meeting No 1/2001 at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of the Committee Yangon City Development Committee Chairman Mayor U Ko Lay. Also present were Vice-Chairman of the Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and members, officials and guests. At the meeting, Mayor U Ko Lay presented K 50 million for the Committee to Ensure Victory in Sports, US $ 46,837 to Myanm

(8) UMEHL gem and jade sale begins

YANGON, 15 May ? Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited began sale of gem and jade through bargain and auction systems today at Gems Mart of Myanma Gems Enterprise.

Three-hundred-and-one gem lots and 333 jade lots are being displayed at the mart from 9 am to 5 pm daily till 19 May. The gem and jade lots will be sold on bargain or auction in US dollars as well as in kyats on 20 May.

Thirty-five foreign merchants and 227 local merchants viewed the gem and jade lots today.

Managing Director of UMEHL Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and officials also attended the opening ceremony of the 14th jade and gem sale of the UMHEL.

e-English Summer Course to be opened

YANGON, 15 May? The Ministry of Education has opened e-Education Learning Centres in the entire nation, and is creating a new environment with the Electronic Data Broadcasting System in cooperation with the Ministry of Information.

According to the national education promotion programme, the Ministry of Education will open the e-English Summer Course at e-Education Learning Centres of Education Colleges and Basic Education High Schools from 9 am to 12 noon daily from 21 to 31 May except Sunday. At the course, professors of English Departments will give lectures with the use of Electronic Data Broadcasting System at the main studio of University of Distance Education and Myanmar Education Research Bureau.

Interested persons including those who took the Matriculation Examination for 2001 may attend the course. Those wishing to attend the course may register at the respective e-Education Learning Centres of Education Colleges and BEHSs during office hours beginning 16 May. Trainees for the course will be limited.
 
Service personnel of Paints Factory honoured

YANGON, 15 May-A ceremony to honour service personnel of Paints Factory that won first prize for best performance for 2000-2001 fiscal year was held at the factory in Bahan Township this morning. Present were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, the director-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises. Minister U Aung Thaung spoke on the occasion. Managing Director of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries U Ngwe Thaw presented gifts and certificates to factory manager Daw Aye Aye Hla. Factory manager Daw Aye Aye Hla presented gifts to all service personnel.

(9) Contraband monosodium glutamate destroyed

YANGON, 15 May ? A total of 6,129 500-gram packages of monosodium glutamate smuggled into the  nation from Thailand were destroyed in Thaton on 8 May 2001.

The monosodium glutamate of Ladle, Palace and Pot brands were seized at check points at Kyaikhto, Thaton and Mottama railway stations and Thaton Township and Naungkala last month. Officials destroyed the contraband at Thaton District Peace and Development Council Office.
