Minister for Religious Affairs
YANGON, 14 May- Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the
Union of Myanmar Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa called on Minister for
Religious Affairs U Aung Khin at his office this afternoon. They
discussed religious affairs . The ambassador donated 60 books on
Buddha treatises and 23 papers to the International Theravada

They were welcomed at NyaungU Airport by the chairman of Magway
Division Peace and Development Council, Chairman of NyaungU
District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo,
Secretary of Mandalay Division USDA U Tin Maung Oo, secretaries and
members of NyaungU District/Township USDAs and officials. The
goodwill delegation first visited the Dhamma Rajaka Pagoda, the
Shwezigon Pagoda and the Arnanda Temple in the morning. In the
afternoon, they went to Myanma Lacquerware Institute where they
were conducted round it by the officials. They cordially exchanged
views with executives of District/Township USDAs. In the evening,
they visited Archaeological Museum, U Ba Nyein Lacquerware
Industry, Lawkananda Pagoda and Gupyaukgyi Pagoda. At night, the
chairman of Magway Division Peace and
Development Council hosted a dinner in honour of the delegation. On
12 May morning, the delegation left NyaungU by air and arrived at
Mandalay International Airport.
The delegation members were welcomed by Secretary
of Mandalay Division USDA U Tin Maung Oo and executives. The
delegation proceeded to the University for Development of National
Races in Sagaing. The delegation members observed the museum in the
compound of the University. The delegation also met with Division
and District USDA executives at the office of Sagaing Division USDA.
Later, they visited Theingi Shwewa Silk Industry, Maha Myatmuni
Pagoda and Myanansankyaw Golden Palace.
Afterwards, the delegation visited Mandalay Hill
and had a cordial discussion with executives of Division, District
and Township USDAs at the office of Mandalay Division USDA. Chairman
of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of
Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint hosted a dinner in honour of the
delegation. On 13 May morning, the delegation left Mandalay for Heho
by air. The delegation headed for Inlay in Nyaungshwe Township by
car and went sightseeing there. Secretary of Shan State (South)
USDA U Nyan Lin hosted a lunch in honour of the delegation at the
Hopin Hotel.
The delegation visited Inlay PhaungdawU Pagoda
and made donations. Afterwards, the delegation toured Nyaugshwe.
Next, the delegation (exchanged views with USDA Secretary U Nyan Lin

Delegates leaves for home
YANGON, 14 May-The delegates from Thailand, Laos,
China, Cambodia and Vietnam, who attended the Ministerial, Senior
Officials Committee (SOC) and High Level Bilateral (HILB) Meetings
of Signatory countries to the 1993 MoU on drug control hosted by
Myanmar and co-organized by UNDCP, left for home today. They were
seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Police Brig-Gen Zaw
Win, officials and those from respective embassies.

(4) Minister inspects mines and factories
in Mandalay Division
YANGON, 14 May- Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn
Myint accompanied by Managing Director U Hsan Tun of No 3 Mining
Enterprise, Deputy Director-General U Hla Thein of Mining Department
and officials inspected mines and factories under the ministry from
11 to 14 May.
The minister met with service personnel of
departments and enterprises under the ministry at the guest house
of No 3 Mining Enterprise in Mandalay on 11 May.
Then, the minister inspected Limestone Production
Project of No 3 Mining Enterprise in Patheingyi
Township and left necessary instructions on exceeding targeted
production and minimising production cost. The minister inspected
crushing of limestone and agriculture farm and fish breeding ponds
there.
Afterwards, the minister met with general manager
and departmental heads at the guest house of No 1 Iron and Steel
Factory in PyinOoLwin. The minister gave instructions on exceeding
the targeted
production and working collaboration with other departments for
production of special quality steel.
Then, the minister and party inspected production
of pig iron and steel balls and gave necessary
instructions.
Later, the minister and party inspected chicken
breeding work and agriculture farms, wood substitute charcoal
factory and the generator there and gave necessary instructions.
The minister and party inspected Kyadwinye iron
ore mining site on 12 May and gave instructions on extraction of
quality iron ore after making estimation, maintenance of reservoir
for availability of water in summer, growing seasonal crops,
perennial crops on fallow and virgin land and livestock breeding at
manageable scale.
The minister and party inspected joint-venture
gold production project of No 2 Mining Enterprise and Golden Point
family Co Ltd in Phayaung Taung and left necessary instructions.
Minister for Industry-1
inspects cement plants and factories
YANGON, 14 May-A ceremony to honour service
personnel who participated in kiln project of Thayet Cement Plant
of Myanma Ceramics Industries of the Ministry of Industry-1 was held
at the briefing hall of the cement plant in Thayet, Magway Division
on 12 May.
Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung presented
gifts to the service personnel.
Myanmar engineers and staff renovated Kiln-1 and
2 of the cement plant and the kilns can now start
operation.
The minister met officials of the plant and
discussed policies of the ministry, boosting production and
progress of the plant.
On 13 May, the minister visited Myasanda soft
drinks and ice factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries in Pyay. He
inspected production process at the factory and gave instructions
on production of soft drinks in accord with GMP system and
distribution.
Minister U Aung Thaung inspected Win Thuza shop
near Sibinthayar market in Pyay. He said the shop was opened with
the aim of direct distribution of products of the Ministry of
Industry-1 to the public. He spoke on observing rules and
regulations in accord with the policies of the ministry.
The minister went to limestone hill of Kyangin
Cement Plant in Kyangin Township and inspected
removal of upper layer of the soil.
Factory manager U Kyi Maung reported on removal
of the upper layer, limestone available and transport of limestone
to the foot of the hill.
The minister inspected Kyangin Cement Plant,
repair of kiln-2 and 3 and control room.
The minister also inspected Nayputaung Tile
Factory, Shwedaung Textile and Finishing Plant and
Thayawady Ceramics Factory.

2/2001 for Executives of the Union Solidarity and Development
Association conducted by Kamayut, Hlaing and Mayangon Township USDAs
was opened at No 5 Basic Education High School in Kamayut Township
this morning.
Members of the Central Executive Committee of
USDA Col Tin Hlaing and Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein addressed the
opening ceremony.
Also present were Chairman of Yangon North
District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and
party, Deputy Commissioner of District General Administration
Department U Khin Maung Lin, township authorities, executive of
Yangon Division USDA Daw Thin Thin Moe, secretaries and executives
of USDAs of Yangon North District and three townships, members of
the course supervisory committee and trainees.

(6) Commander attends
donation ceremony of tube-well sinking machines
YANGON, 14 May-A ceremony to hand over Water Jet
tube-well sinking machines to District Union Solidarity and
Development Associations and open the Training Course on Practical
Tubewell Sinking by Water Jet System was held at the city hall in
Monywa on 10 May.
It was attended by Chairman of Sagaing Division
Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen
Soe Win and departmental officials, course instructors, member
trainees of USDA.
First, the commander made a speech. Then, he
handed over K 11 million worth of 12 tube-well sinking machines-10
machines donated by USDA (Central) and 2 machines donated by Sagaing
Division Peace and Development Council to representatives of
District USDAs for availability of fresh water in Shwebo and Monywa
districts.
The machines will be of some help for the
availability of fresh water in rural areas because 2-inch, 4-inch
and 6- inch-diameter tube-wells can be sunk to the depth of 400 feet
with the use of them.
After the ceremony, the commander inspected
construction site of retaining wall on the bank of Chindwin river
in Monywa and attended to the needs.

regional development work in Pyapon
YANGON, 14 May-A ceremony to open Pyapon District
Traditional Medical Clinic of Traditional
Medicine Department under the Ministry of Health was held in Pyapon
on 9 May.
Present were Ayeyawady Division Peace and
Development Council Chairman South-West Command Commander Maj-Gen
Thura Shwe Mann, senior military officers, departmental personnel,
local authorities and others.
Pyapon District Peace and Development Council
Chairman Lt-Col Myo Myint and Ayeyawady Division Traditional
Medicine Department Head U Thein Win formally opened the clinic, and
the commander unveiled the signboard of the clinic.
Lt-Col Myo Myint presented K 400,000 donated by
Pyapon District Peace and Development Council to the clinic through
U Thein Win.
After inspecting the clinic, the commander met
with members of the District Maternal and Child Welfare
Association, District Working Committee for Women's Affairs,
District Women Entrepreneurs' Association, Union Solidarity and
Development Association and Red Cross Brigade at Thiri May Women
Sports Hall in Pyapon.
Then, the commander met with secretaries,

YANGON, 14 May-A ceremony to open Taninthayi
Division Domestic Science Course No 27/2001 was held at the
Domestic Science School for Women in Myeik on 7 May morning.
Present were Taninthayi Division Peace and
Development Council Chairman Coastal Region Command Commander
Brig-Gen Aye Kyway, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tin Latt, departmental
heads, course instructors and trainees.
The commander delivered an address on the
occasion. Then, the commander inspected the progress of
construction of Kywegu-Kyaukphya Bridge in Myeik Township and the
building of Tade Concrete Bridge in Palaw Township, Palaw Station
Hospital, Parahita School and Affiliated Basic Education High
School of Pedat Village, Thayet-chaung Township, and attended to
requirements.
At 4.30 p.m., the commander inspected the oil
palm farm of Annawa Soe Moe where an official reported on the work
done and future tasks. He fulfilled needs.

Hospital and Nurse Training School, and left instructions.
On 8 May morning, he inspected repairs of

Construction of rural roads
discussed
YANGON, 14 May - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division
Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen
Thura Shwe Mann met with Chairman of Maubin District Peace and
Development Council Lt-Col Thein Hlaing, engineers of townships in
Maubin district and officials of Development Affairs Department at
Maubin District Peace and Development Council in Maubin Township on
9 May.
Discussions were centred on repair of roads and
bridges, building of rural roads and bridge. The
commander also looked into the requirements presented by the
officials.
The commander then visited First Aid Basic Course
No 3/2001 which was being conducted at Maubin District Union
Solidarity and Development Association Office. He observed trainees
practising first aid courses with the help of modern equipment. He
then cordially greeted them.
At the Maubin District Union Solidarity and
Development Association Office, the commander met with secretaries
and executives of District and Township USDAs and members of USDA.
He explained the aims of the association and urged them to strive
to dutifully discharge their assigned tasks.

(8) Deputy minister inspects factories
YANGON, 14 May - Deputy Minister for Industry-1
Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, together with officials, visited Brick Factory
No 1 and Firebrick Factory in Danyingon, Insein Township, yesterday
afternoon. The deputy minister inspected production work and gave
instructions on the running of the factory at full capacity,
promotion of production work and quality control. The officials
reported on production work. The deputy minister attended to their
needs. In the evening, the deputy minister went to Chemical Factory
on Bayintnaung Road in Hline Township. The deputy minister inspected
the factory and gave instructions on production and distribution of
soap powder and supply of soap powder to Winthuza Shops.
Sino-Myanmar friendly women's volleyball matches on 17, 19 May
YANGON, 14 May-Under the cultural exchange
programme between China and Myanmar, Selected Women's Team of
Myanmar Volleyball Federation and Selected Women's Team of Yunnan
Province, China will play friendly volleyball matches at National
Indoor Stadium-1, Thuwunna, at 4 pm on 17 and 19 May. Admission fee

cases exposed in March
YANGON, 14 May-The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police
Force and the Customs Department exposed 249 drug-related cases in
March. The authorities seized 149.5665 kilos of opium in 52 cases,
9.9252 kilos of heroin in 94 cases, 0.1151 kilo of opium oil in one
case, 1.3687 kilos of low-grade opium in four cases, 32.5936 kilos
of marijuana in 20 cases, 19.38 litres of Phensedyl in six cases,
650,092 stimulant pills in 47 cases, 0.7369 kilo of Ephedrine in
one case, 0.0005 kilo of stimulant powder in one case, 9.8 litres
of Acetic Anhydride, 11014.688 litres of chemical liquid in one
case, 2095 kilos of chemical powder, 20 cases for failure to
register and three other cases. Action was taken against 360
persons' 285 men and 75 women's in connection with 249 drug-related
cases in March 2001.
