(1)Commander gives instructions on cultivation of monsoon paddy in Htantabin Township

YANGON, 7 May Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung  Than, accompanied by division-level departmental officials, met with township-level departmental officials and local farmers in Htantabin Township, Yangon North District, this afternoon, and gave instructions on regional development tasks and cultivation of monsoon paddy for 2001-2002.

The commander arrived at the office of Htantabin Township Peace and Development Council at 2.30 p.m.

They were welcomed by Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and officials.  The commander and party met with township-level departmental officials and local farmers at Myawady Hall of the office of Htantabin Township Peace and Development Council.

The commander said that the road linking Htantabin Township and Shwepyitha Bridge has already been opened. Regional development tasks have been carried out continuously. As the rainy season has set in, township-level departmental officials and local farmers need to cooperate in making arrangements for cultivation of monsoon paddy on the targeted acres of land. To increase paddy yield, cultivation techniques should be changed and new paddy strains used.

It is targeted to grow monsoon paddy on 86,270 acres of land in Htantabin Township. It is necessary to make arrangements for the growing of trees in the township and along the road linking Shwepyitha Bridge and Htantabin Township in the arbour month during the rainy season.

Then, Chairman of Htantabin Township Peace and Development Council U Thaung Han reported on progress of regional development tasks carried out in Htantabin Township, progress of ploughing work for 2001-2002 and cultivation of monsoon paddy.  The head of Township Department of Fisheries reported on the condition of digging fish ponds, arrangements made by Basic Education High School Board of Trustees of Htantabin Township to open a multimedia teaching centre and work done for cultivation of monsoon paddy by local farmers.

The commander attended to their needs.  Next, the commander went to the office of Htantabin Township Union Solidarity and Development Association.  He met with the executives of Township USDA and attended to their requirements.

(2) Commerce Minister meets ambassadors

YANGON, 7 May Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone met Ambassador of the Russian Federation  Mr Gleb A Ivashentsov and party at 1 p.m. and Ambassador Mr Nguyen Deng Khoa of the Socialist  Republic of Vietnam and party at 3 p.m. at his office on Strand Road today separately.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director-General U Nyunt Aye of  Directorate of Trade, Director-General U Nay Win of Border Trade Department, Managing Director U  Min Hla Aung of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading and officials.

Minister receives Chinese guests

YANGON, 7 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received President Mr Lian of China National  Building Material Equipment Corporation of China, and party at his office at 2.30 p.m. today. Also  present at the call were the directors-general and managing directors of departments and industries under  the ministry.

(3) Commander inspects road construction, oil palm farms

YANGON, 7 May Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Coastal Region
Command Commander Brig-Gen. Aye Kyway, together with departmental personnel, inspected the site  chosen for construction of the basic education middle school and building of the basic education primary  school in Chaungkashet Village, Bokpyin Township, on 29 April.

The commander attended to the needs. He then inspected Taungdagon oil palm farm, progress of
construction of Kayathuyi Affiliated BEMS and Aung Zin Bar oil palm farm in Hankadaing Village.

On 30 April, he inspected milling at Aung Zin Bar oil palm farm, Pokaung oil palm farm and
construction of nine miles and 3 furlongs long rural development road.  Afterwards, he inspected Dagon  Timber oil palm farm, Yuzana oil palm farm and livestock breeding at Tenth Mile Camp. On 1 May, he  inspected progress of the building of Santhida-Nanton road in Kawthoung Township.

Later, he met with Division/District/Township level departmental officials at the hall of Kawthoung
Station and gave instructions on cooperation for regional development, extension of agriculture and
livestock breeding, and sectors of health, education and transport. After being reported by officials
concerned, the commander fulfilled the requirements.

Commander attends consecration ceremony of Buddha Images in Pathein

YANGON, 7 May  A consecration ceremony of three Buddha Images in U Maung Gyi Prayer Hall of  Shwe Moathtaw Pagoda in Pathein, Ayeyawady Division, was held in conjunction with a Bo-tree watering  ceremony at the pagoda on 6 May.

The ceremony was attended by Ovadacariya Sayadaws, Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and  Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and wife,  Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. Tint Swe and senior officers, division, district and township level officials,  members of social organizations, wellwishers and devotees.

The Ovadacariya Sayadaws consecrated the three Buddha Images. The commander and officials offered  "soon" to the Sayadaws. Then, the commander and the congregation received the Nine Precepts from  Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Naga Vamsa.  The members of the Sangha recited Parittas.   Next, the commander and officials presented offertories to the Sayadaws and shared merits gained for  good deeds after hearing Ovada Katha from Sayadaw Agga Maha Gandhavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta  Mahosadha Pandita.  After that, a Bo-tree watering ceremony was held on the platform of the pagoda.   The Commander and wife and the congregation watered the Bo-tree.

(4) Myanmar delegation attends ASEAN Economic Ministers  Retreat

YANGON, 7 May A Myanmar delegation led by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman s Office Brig-Gen. Abel attended the ASEAN Economic Ministers  (AEM) Retreat held at Siem  Reap in Cambodia from 3 to 5 May.

The delegation members were Director-General of National Planning and Economic Development
Department U Maung Maung Yi and deputy head of Myanmar Embassy to Cambodia U Maung Wai.

The opening ceremony of the retreat was held at the Sofitel Royal Ankar Hotel on 3 May morning.

Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Hun Sen delivered an address.

The Prime Minister proposed that ASEAN should implement ASEAN GSP (generalised system of
preferences), develop infrastructure in the Great Mekong Sub region where new ASEAN member nations  exist and implement human resources development programmes proposed at the Fourth ASEAN Informal  Summit held in Singapore last year and at the Informal Summit attended by three dialogue partners.

Before the opening ceremony, the ASEAN economic ministers paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister  Samdech Hun Sen.

Thai Commerce Minister Adisai Bodharamik chaired the meeting held in the afternoon.

At the meeting, implementation of tasks laid down by heads of states at the ASEAN Informal Summit  held in Singapore was assessed and future tasks discussed.

The meeting also focused on discussions about implementation of ASEAN GSP made with the People s  Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia and Newzeland and the accelerating of e-ASEAN Framework Agreement.

ASEAN industrial cooperation programmes and matters related to flow of foreign investment into the  ASEAN region were also discussed.

The economic ministers exchanged notes about the application of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam for the  membership of World Trade Organization and New Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations to be held  in Carter in November.

They also agreed to hold the next ASEAN Economic Minister s Retreat in Malaysia in 2002.

On 4 May, the third meeting of the ASEAN economic ministers and economic ministers of three dialogue  partners the People s Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea was held at the same hotel.

The economic ministers assessed working programmes laid down at the Summit of ASEAN and three  dialogue partners held in Singapore last year and implementation of decisions made at the meeting of  ASEAN economic ministers and the economic ministers of the three dialogue partners held in Chiang  Mai.

They approved six projects out of ten proposed by ten ASEAN nations and three dialogue partners.

They also exchanged their views about information technology and agreed to accelerate their cooperation   in this matter.  The ASEAN member nations and Japan and the Republic of Korea supported Cambodia,  Laos and Vietnam for their membership application of WTO.  They agreed to hold the next meeting in  Hanoi, Vietnam together with the 33rd Meeting of ASEAN economic ministers in September this year.
 
Workshop on central level assessment of health information system that supports management opens

YANGON, 7 May-A workshop on central level assessment of health information system that supports  management jointly sponsored by Health Planning Department and the World Health Organization was  opened at Health Planning Department on Theinbyu Street this morning. Present were Deputy Minister  for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, Director-General of HPD Dr Kyi Soe, the directors-general, acting  Resident Representative of WHO Dr Anton Fric, Planning Officer of UNICEF, Heads of State and  Division Health Departments, Project Manager and officials. The deputy minister said a plan to apply  progressive science and developments on know-how and technology especially modern information  system was laid down in the National Health Plan. Therefore, health information system that fulfilled the  requirements of the people, health project managers, decision-makers and plan-makers is being launched.  The indicators of the system reveal the progress and retrogress in health conditions and health problems,  he added. Acting Resident Representative of WHO Dr Anton Fric reported on directives of WHO  Regional Director for South East Asia. Director Daw Htay Htay Aye and Deputy Director of Health  Planning Department (Upper Myanmar) Dr Tin Lay Myint submitted papers. Heads of State and Division
Health Departments took part in the discussions. The workshop continues till 8 May.

(5) A&I Minister leaves for China

YANGON, 7 May At the invitation of the Ministry of Agriculture, the People's Republic of China, a six-member delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin left today for China to observe the agricultural industries and the factories which produce machinery used for availability of water.  They were seen off at the airport by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Win Tin, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint and responsible officials.

Lao delegation arrives

YANGON, 7 May A Laotian delegation led by Chairman of Council of the People s Attorneys Mr
Khampane Philavong arrived here by air this evening at the invitation of Attorney-General U Tha Tun.

The delegation was welcomed by Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye, Director-General U Tun Shin of Attorney-General s Office, Ambassador of the Lao People s Democratic Republic to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney-General s Office.

Myanmar delegation arrives back

YANGON, 7 May-The Myanmar delegation, which attended the 7th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat held in Cambodia from 3 to 5 May, arrived back here by air yesterday evening. The delegation led by Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen. Abel was welcomed  back at the airport by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and  Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Ambassador of Cambodia Mr Nim Chantara and departmental  officials. Member of the delegation Director-General U Maung Maung Yee of National AFTA Unit of  Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development also arrived back on the same flight.
 
Delegates arrive to attend meetings

YANGON, 7 May-Senior officials from organizations concerned and signatory countries arrived here by  air today to attend the Meeting of Ministers and Senior Officials of the Signatory Countries to the 1993  Memorandum of Understanding on Drug Control and High Level Bilateral Meetings on Drug Control to  be hosted by Myanmar beginning 8 May. Senior officials of the United Nations Drug Control Programme  Regional Centre for East Asia and Pacific Region arrived here this morning and senior officials form  Thailand and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam this evening. They were welcomed at Yangon  International Airport by Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of  Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Director-General Police Brig-Gen. Hla Tun and  officials.

(6)  KBZ Bank Ltd donates K 20 million for all-round renovation of Kaung Hmu Lon Pagoda

YANGON, 7 May A ceremony to donate K 20 million for all-round renovation of historic Kaung Hmu  Lon Pagoda in Machambaw Township, Putao District, Kachin State by Kan Baw Za Bank Limited was  held at Malikha Guest House of Northern Command on 3 May. It was attended by Chairman of Kachin  State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Base  Commander of Myitkyina Air Force Base Brig-Gen. Bo Kyi, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen. San Tun and  high-ranking military officers, secretary of Kachin State Peace and Development Council and  departmental officials, the donor Chairman U Aung Ko Win of KBZ Bank Limited and guests.

At the ceremony, Chairman of KBZ Bank Limited U Aung Ko Win donated K 20 million to Chairman  Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win of Work Committee for all-round renovation of Kaung Hmu Lon  Pagoda. The commander presented certificate of honour to the donor.

Cash donated for trust funds of People s Hospital in Monywa

YANGON, 7 May Under the leadership of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council and
Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Supervisory Committee, a ceremony to make donations  to the trust fund of Division People s Hospital was held at the hospital on 5 May.

Present were Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Chairman North-West Command
Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win and wife, departmental officials, doctors, nurses and wellwishers.

The wellwishers presented K 11.7 million for the trust fund of the hospital through the commander. The  commander handed over the K 11.7 million to Head of Division Health Department Dr Kyaw Shein.

The commander and officials offered "soon" to members of the Sangha of Jotika-rama Pali University in  Monywa. Similarly, led by Division Peace and Development Council, the wellwishers offered "soon" to  over 3,700 members of the Sangha from 150 monasteries in Monywa.
 
Special Refresher Course No 4 for District-level Judges opened

YANGON, 7 May Special Refresher Course No 4 for District-level Judges, organized by the Supreme  Court (Yangon), was opened at the hall-2 of the Supreme Court here this morning, with an address by  Chief Justice U Aung Toe.

Also present were Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo, Supreme Court Justices U Khin Myint, Dr Tin Aung  Aye, U Chit Lwin, U Myint Thein and U Tun Shin, Director-General of the Supreme Court (Yangon) U  Tin Aye and directors, advisers, deputy directors-general and guests. Altogether 55 trainees are attending  the two-week course.

Bo tree water pouring ceremony held at Twantay Shwesandaw Pagoda

YANGON, 7 May-The Bo tree water pouring ceremony of Twantay Shwesandaw Pagoda was held at the  pagoda in Twantay yesterday, attended by over 1,000 people under the supervision of Committee for  Holding Nyaungyaythun Festival. Chairman of the Township Peace and Development Council U Tin Ohn  and members, Chairman of Pagoda Board of Trustees U Zaw Win and members, committee members,  members of religious associations and local people poured water at a Bo tree at the pagoda which was  crowded with devotees till 6 p.m.

YCDC Chairman inspects tax-free markets

YANGON, 7 May-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay together with  officials inspected Yankin and Hanthawady tax-free markets of YCDC this morning. Mayor U Ko Lay  arrived at Yankin tax-free market on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Yankin Township where Joint-Secretary  of YCDC U Kyi Win, Head of Markets Department U Soe Myint, Head of Public Relations and  Information Department U Hla Myint Swe, Joint-Head of Production Department Maj Tin Pe and officials  welcomed them. After hearing the reports of the officials, the mayor gave necessary instructions. He also inspected Hanthawady tax-free market in Kamayut Township and attended to the needs.

(7) Myanma Posts and Telecommunications opens courses

YANGON, 7 May Metallic Cable Testing and Fault Location Course, General Principles of Telephone  Switching Engineering Course, Fujitsu SDH Digital Microwave Equipment Handling Course and Basic  Telegraphy Course were opened at the Telecommunication and Postal Service Training Centre of  Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this  morning with an address by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Win Tin.

Also present were the director-general of Directorate of Telecommunications, general manager of MPT  and head of departments, the principal of TPSTC, course instructors and trainees.

The minister said that efforts are being made to catch up with rapidly developing electronic technology  and information technology in accordance with the guidance of the Head of State by effectively using  natural resources and human resources. MPT is carrying out the tasks of promoting development of  communication systems all over the country including border areas. Tiddim and Tamu digital microwave  links are connected on 28 and 30 April under communication development project of the regions in the  western part of Ayeyawady River and border areas. Local people can easily make calls not only to local  places but also overseas.

At the cable testing course, lectures on testing cables, fault finding and the use of accessories in three
weeks, at the telephone switching engineering course, lectures on kinds of exchanges, main tasks and
parts of telephones and systematic handling of Fujitsu digital microwave equipment in two weeks, and at  the basic telegraphy course, lectures on working process of telegraph, basic telegraphy and codes in  telegraphy in two weeks will be given. The minister urged the trainees to serve the interest of the people  in the region where they are assigned duties. Altogether 44 trainees are attending the courses.

Basic course for cement production technology opens

YANGON, 7 May A basic course for cement production technology, organized by Myanma Ceramics Industries of the Ministry of Industry-1, was held at the Brick Factory in Danyingon, Insein Township this morning.

Present were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Thein Tun, managing  directors and directors-general of enterprises and departments, course instructors and trainees. Minister U  Aung Thaung said Myanmar is rich in natural resources. These resources are to be applied in striving for  national development. The use of cement plays an important role in ensuring better transportation.  Arrangements are being made for construction of more cement plants and in the future, more private  cement plants will emerge.  Altogether 53 trainees from Myanma Economic Holdings Ltd, Myanmar  Economic Corporation and Myanma Ceramics Industries (Kyaukse Cement Plant Project) are attending  the three-week course.  Minister U Aung Thaung inspected the kiln section, the site for extension of the  factory that can manufacture 900 tons a year and production process.
 
CEC member hosts dinner in honour of USDA members from Leikha Township

YANGON, 7 May CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen. Pyi  Sone hosted a dinner in honour of members of Leikha Township USDA and the excursion group at the  Ministry of Commerce this evening.  Present were CEC member Brig-Gen. Kyaw Hsan, Director-General  of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of Border Trade Department U Nay Win,  Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung, Leikha Township USDA  members of Loilem District and members of the excursion group.

USDA CEC member Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone spoke and presented a gift to the leader of the excursion group.  Executive of Leikha Township USDA Ma Su Su Nwe also presented a gift and a commemorative pennant  to the CEC member.  Secretary of Leikha Township USDA Sai Myint Thein Lwin spoke words of thanks.  Brig-Gen Pyi Sone also presented cash to USDA members from Leikha Township and members of the excursion group.

(8) New medicine Cardivas introduced

YANGON, 7 May-A ceremony to introduce Cardivas (Carvedilol 12.5 grams) of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd was held at the Traders Hotel yesterday evening. Present were medical superintendents of  hospitals in Yangon, professors, specialists and doctors. Heart Specialist Prof Daw Cho Lay Mar extended  greetings. Cardiac Surgeon Prof U Khin Maung Aye and Prof Daw Cho Lay Mar presided over the  ceremony. Doctor in-charge of Ward 1/2 of Yangon General Hospital Dr Nay Win and Heart Specialist of  North Okkalapa People's Hospital Prof U Aung Chein explained facts about Cardivas with the use of  audio-visual aids. Prof U Khin Maung Aye and Prof Daw Cho Lay Mar answered queries raised by those  present. Resident Manager of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd Mr Amit spoke words of thanks, and the  chairman gave concluding remarks.
 
Deputy Minister inspects Pakokku-Gangaw-Kalay Railroad

YANGON, 7 May - Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation, together with officials of Myanma Railways,  inspected the railway station in Pakokku on 30 April. The deputy minister gave instructions on the  running of daily trains along Kalay-Gangaw-Yemyetni Railroad. Afterwards, the deputy minister met  with the officials of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Rail Transportation and gave  instructions. The deputy minister also inspected Pakokku-Myaing-Kyaw Railroad by special train on 1  May and gave instructions on repairs of Minkine Bridge. He also supervised the digging of Ponnyataung  Tunnel and the building of the bypass road.

Commander-in-Chief's (Navy) Cup Table Tennis Championship opened

YANGON, 7 May-The opening ceremony of Commander-in-Chief's Cup Table Tennis Championship was held at Thiha Tun Tin hall of Ayeyawady Naval Dockyard Command Headquarters this morning.  Acting Commander of the Command Headquarters Commodore Paw Tun, on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), delivered a speech on the occasion. Also present were Commander Capt Maw Thein of  Ayeyawady Naval Regional Command Headquarters, officers and other ranks from Commander-in- Chief's Office, Headquarters in Yangon Station and Major War Vessel Group and players. Altogether 9  men's teams and 9 women's team took part in the championship which will be held up to 11 May.

(9) USDA CEC member attends conclusion of Executives Multiplier Management Course

YANGON, 7 May-A ceremony to mark conclusion of the Union Solidarity and Development Association  Executives Multiplier Management Course 9/2001 and Music and Fine Arts Course No 2 was held at Thiripyinnya Hall of No 1 Basic Education High School in Bago yesterday. USDA CEC member Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint attended the ceremony and presented certificates to the trainees.

The CEC member met with the secretary of Bago Division USDA and executives of
District/Township/Ward USDAs, and gave instructions on organizing, social affairs and training. Brig-Gen. Ohn Myint then accepted K 21,500 donated by members of USDAs of Kyaikpadaing, Tawa, Htaung-min and Kyaikpadainglay villages and Thanatpin Township and villagers of Kyaikpadaing Village for Basic Education Primary School, at the school of Kyaikpadaing Village. He met with USDA members and towns elders and left instructions on organizing, social affairs, rural development, health, education and  ensuring of smooth rural roads. He inspected Htaun-gmin Village BEPS built by the State, Thanatpin  Township USDA and the village. He later met with members of the village USDA and towns elders and  left instructions on education.

YANGON, 7 May-Central Executive Committee member of the Union Solidarity and Development
Association U Saw Tun, accompanied by officials, arrived at Danubyu in Ayayawady Division and paid  homage to Dhamma Mudra Cinta image in the hall at the precinct of ancient Kyaikthalunbun Pagoda  yesterday afternoon. He met with members of Danubyu Township Peace and Development Council,  departmental officials, chairman and members of Pagoda Board of Trustees, executives of USDA and  towns elders and gave instructions on development of the town, preservation and renovation religious  edifices and attended to the needs. He also attended the Bo tree watering ceremony held in the precinct of  the pagoda and poured water at a Bo tree together with the officials and people, and left there in the  evening
