(1) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe sends  message of  felicitations to Poland

YANGON, 3 May-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Aleksander  Kwasniewski, President of the Republic of Poland, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic  of Poland which falls on 3 May 2001.

(2)  Secretary-1 inspects construction of Narcotic Drugs Elimination Museum in Kamayut  Township

YANGON, 2 May-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt inspected construction of Narcotic Drugs Elimination Museum on Kyundaw Street in Kamayut  Township here and gave necessary instructions this morning.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials at the State Peace and Development Council  Office, arrived at the construction site of the museum at 9 am and was welcomed there by Chairman of  Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, the deputy  ministers, Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win  and committee members and officials.

At the briefing hall, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing reported to the Secretary-1 on progress of  work and tasks being carried out, arrangements to display the exhibits at the museum and work for greening the compound of the museum, MPF Director-General Police Maj-Gen Soe Win on  arrangements being made for installing the booths, Director of Department of Cultural Institute Daw Nu  Mra Zan on  display plans for photographs and paintings and Director U Soe Myint of First Myanmar  Investment Co  on greening and earth work.

In response to the reports, the Secretary-1 gave instructions on emergence of the museum of world standard, and displaying efforts being made to eliminate narcotic drugs in Myanmar throughout successive eras.

Then, the Secretary-1 inspected the samples of the mural paintings for the museum to be drawn by artists of Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon.  Afterwards, the Secretary-1 inspected work  being carried out for greening the environs of the museum and construction work and gave instructions to  officials.  The Secretary-1 left the museum at 10.30 am.

(3) Secretary-1 receives Thai Foreign Minister

YANGON, 2 May- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen. Khin Nyunt  received Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Mr Surakiart Sathirathai and party, currently here, at the  Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 p.m. today. Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and officials.  The Thai Foreign Minister and party were accompanied by Ambassador of Thailand Mr Oum Maolanon.

(4) Myanmar and Thai FMs exchange views

YANGON, 2 May- The Myanmar delegates led by Minister for  Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and the Thai delegation led by  Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Mr Surakiart  Sathirathai cordially exchanged views on matters of common  interests and regional and international affairs at the hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.

At 12.30 p.m., Minister U Win Aung hosted a lunch in honour  of Thai Foreign Minister and party at Zizawa Yeiktha of the  ministry.

In the evening, the Thai Foreign Minister and party left here by air. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister U Win Aung and officials, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Oum Maolanon  and staff of the Thai Embassy.

Myanmar-Thai border conflicts clarified

YANGON, 2 May - A Press meet on the conflicts at Myanmar-Thai border was held at Tatmadaw Guest  House on Inya Road in Yangon this morning.  Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen. Aung Thein gave  an introductory speech.

Officiating Head of Department of the Office of Strategic Studies Lt-Col San Pwint clarified matters relating to Thai artillery and armoured-mobile cannon bombardment on Myanmar side after the group comprising SURA opium smuggling insurgents and Thai armed troops attacked the Tatmadaw Pachee  outpost, heavy weapons fire from Maehtawkale camp in Thailand to support KNU insurgents who crossed Thaung-yin River from Thailand to attack Moakthon outpost near Myawady, and Thai artillery barrage during SURA and Thai armed troops’ attack on Tatmadaw BP(1) camp at the border at  Pungpa-hkyem region in Mongton Township. He replied to queries raised by the journalists. Joint Secretary of  Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Police Col Kham Aung explained narcotic drugs elimination endeavours. Deputy Chief of Office of Strategic Studies Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win also clarified the conflicts.

Together with OSS officials of the Ministry of Defence, mediamen of the Ministry of Information, officials of CCDAC, Patron of Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win, President U Sao Kai Hpa and member correspondents, correspondents of The Myanmar Times and guests viewed the map showing the armed conflicts.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin receives Pakistani Minister

YANGON, 2 May -Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Minister and Chairman of Export Promotion Bureau of Government of Pakistan Mr Tariq Ikram and party at his office this afternoon.  They discussed bilateral cooperation in economy affairs and industry between the two countries.  Present were Deputy Ministers for Industry-2 Brig-Gen. Aung Thein Lin and Lt-Col Khin  Maung Kyaw and officials.

Myanmar, Pakistan discuss trade

YANGON, 2 May-A Myanmar delegation comprising Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung, heads of departments and officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Beans and Pulses Merchants Association and an economic delegation led by Mr Tariq Ikram, Minister and Chairman of Export Promotion Bureau of Islamic Republic of Pakistan met at the Ministry of Commerce this morning.

They discussed mutual trade between the two countries, economic cooperation and promotion of trade.

Minister meets Resident Representative of UNICEF

YANGON, 2 May- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Resident Representative of UNICEF Mr J Bertrand Mendis at his office this morning.  They discussed safe drinking water supply matters.  Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Khin Maung, departmental heads and officials.

Minister receives GM of Alembic

YANGON, 2 May- Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received General Manager Mr GR Nithya  Nandam and party of Alembic Ltd of India at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were  Deputy Ministers Prof Dr Mya Oo and Prof Dr Kyaw Myint and officials.


Myanmar delegation leaves for Cambodia

YANGON, 2 May- A Myanmar delegation led by Minister  at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s  Office Brig-Gen. Abel left here by air this morning to attend  the Seventh Informal Meeting of ASEAN Economic  Ministers in Cambodia from 3 to 5 May.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport  by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Minister for  Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein  Htwa and Ambassador of Cambodia Mr Nim Chantara.

The minister was accompanied by Director-General U Maung Maung Yi of National AFTA Unit of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development. Deputy Head of the Myanmar Embassy in Cambodia will attend the meeting.

YANGON, 2 May-Minister for National Planning and Economic  Development U Soe Tha received Minister and Chairman of  Export Promotion Bureau of Government of Pakistan Mr Tariq  Ikram and party at his office this afternoon. They discussed  economic cooperation between the two countries. Present at  the call were officials of the ministry.

 Minister U Soe Tha receives Programme Manager of ADB

YANGON, 2 May- Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha received  Programme Manager Mr C R Rajendran. and party of Asian Development Bank at his office this afternoon.  The socio-economic development of Myanmar, was discussed. Present at the call were  officials of the ministry.

Minister U Aung Thaung receives Pakistani Minister

YANGON,  2 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received  Minister and Chairman of Ex,port Promotion Bureau of  Government of Pakistan Mr Tariq Ikram and party his office this  morning. Present were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen.  Thein Tun and Brig-Gen. Kyaw Win, directors-general and  managing directors of the ministry.

Minister for Science and Technology meets Pakistani counterpart

YANGON, 2- May-Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung met Minister of Science and Technology Prof Dr Datta ur Rehman, accompanied by the Commercial Counsellor of the Pakistani  Embassy, at his office this morning.

They cordially discussed cooperation in science and technology between the two countries. (7) Minister inspects construction of Yangon Psychiatric Hospital

YANGON, 2 May- Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Director-General Dr Wan  Maung of Health Department and officials, inspected Yangon Psychiatric Hospital Construction Project  in Dagon Myothit (East) Township this evening.  In the lecture hall of the hospital, Director U Than Myint  of Asia World Co Ltd and Project Engineer U Aung Sein reported to the minister and party on  completion of the hospital and tasks being carried out. The minister gave instructions on tasks to be  carried out and preparations for opening of the hospital and inspected the hospital.

After that, the minister proceeded to Traditional Medicine Hospital on Ngadat-gyi Pagoda Road in Bahan Township and inspected renovation of old traditional medicine hospital. Director-General Prof Dr  Kyaw Myint Tun of Traditional Medicine Department and officials conducted the minister round the hospital.  The minister attended to their needs.

Diploma in Hospital Administration Course opens

YANGON, 2 May- A ceremony to open the Diploma in  Hospital Administration Course No 5 of Medical Sciences  Department was held at the meeting hall of the department on  Bogyoke Aung San Street this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Health Maj-Gen  Ket Sein, Deputy Ministers Prof Dr Mya Oo and Prof Dr  Kyaw Myint, departmental heads, rectors, medical  superintendents, instructors and trainees.  The minister gave a  speech.

A total of 29 heads of State, Division, District and Township Health Departments and medical superintendents are attending the six-week course.

(8) CPT Minister inspects GSM mobile phone system

YANGON, 2 May-Minister for Communications, Posts and  Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Win Tin arrived at the auto exchange in  Pyigyidagun Township, Mandalay yesterday afternoon.

He was briefed on installation and testing of the GSM mobile  phone system by Project Manager U Kyaw Win.

After giving instructions there, the minister inspected GSM  mobile phone machinery control room, exchange and radio  station.

The ministry is making preparations to install the system in Yangon and Mandalay, and test of the telephone lines is also under way in Yangon.

Minister inspects development of tourism services in Dawei

YANGON, 2 May- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by Managing  Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials, arrived in Dawei on 30 April  for inspection in development of tourism industry in Dawei region.

At the airport, the minister met Brig-Gen. Maung Oo of Dawei Station and departmental officials.  The  minister went to Maungmagan Beach and inspected Maungmagan-Hmyawyit road, conditions for  construction of recreation camps along the beach and the site for hotel projects to be implemented with  foreign investment.

On 1 May, the minister and party, accompanied by Mr Sommai and Mr John Lee and officials of Myanmar Green Paradise selected the plot to be leased for construction of international level hotel in  Maungmagan Beach Zone-3. In Dawei, the minister met officials and gave necessary instructions.

(9) Yunnan Hongta football team arrives

YANGON, 2 May- Yunnan Hongta football team led by Mr You Kewei of Yunnan Province of the  People’s Republic of China arrived here by air this afternoon to play friendly soccer matches here.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by liaison officer U Kyaw Oo of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials.

A total of 30 members in the Yunnan team comprising four professional footballers a Russian, a Cameroon, a Romanian and a Chilean and the manager, the coach and other players will meet the tentatively selected football team of Myanmar Football Federation at Youth Training Centre  (Thuwunna). The first match will start at 4 p.m. on 3 May and the second at 6.30 p.m. on 5 May.

Drug traffickers get death sentence, 25 years

YANGON, 2 May-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local police force,  acting on information, stopped a Nissan car with number plate Ka/4876 driven by Tun Aung (a) Sai Aut  at Mongphyat check-point and found 5,360,000 stimulant tablets bearing the word "WY" in the bags of  garlic on 23 December 1999.

Mongphyat Police Force filed driver Tun Aung (a) Sai Aut, 52, of Sunmon region, Ward 1 in Kengtung  Township and conductor Aik Kyaing, 26, of Naungmon Village in Mongywang under Narcotic Drugs  and Psychotropic Substances Law.

On 30 March, Mong-phyat District Court handed down a death sentence under Section 20 (A) on Aik  Kyaing and twenty-five years’ imprisonment under Section 20 (A) on Tun Aung (a) Sai Aut.
