He said that the dinner is hosted in honour of the members of the national race cultural troupes from border areas, who are currently here under the arrangement of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs to meet with one another at Myanma Traditional Maha Thingyan happily and peacefully.

The Union of Myanmar is home to over one hundred national races. For years countable by the thousand, the national brethren have been living in the Union through thick and thin and in amity, and due to topographical conditions, their languages and traditions have differed from one another. However, all the national brethren have been born of a family.

The government is striving to ensure the further flowering of Union Spirit and the spirit of national solidarity, adopting the attitude that as long as all the national brethren are bounded with amity, the Union will exist.

In previous times, due to lack of peace and difficult access in border areas, the national brethren had few occasions to meet with one another. In the time of the incumbent government, measures have been taken to ensure stability, peace and tranquillity of these areas and improvement of transport.

As the regions have become peaceful and tranquil and the national brethren have more occasions to deal with one another, efforts have been made to develop education, health and social sectors. As a result, the friendly ties and amity among the national brethren have become stronger, and favourable conditions have emerged in which the cultures and traditions they have preserved can be exchanged.

At this time, arrangements have thus been made to enable the national brethren from various border areas to further cement the bond of amity, to exchange their cultures and traditions and to further strengthen Union Spirit and the spirit of national solidarity.

Arrangements have been made to enable them to study development tasks of the nation and visit famous pagodas.

All the national brethren are required to disseminate the knowledge they gained and work for the flourishing of Union Spirit when they arrive back their native places.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all the members of the national race cultural troupes to strive for the further cementing of national solidarity and the flourishing of Union Spirit like the cultural deputation of the State.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented gifts to members of the cultural troupes of the national races.

Rawon girl Ma Janu of Putao region in Kachin State spoke words of thanks, saying that as they got the opportunity to take part in the Maha Thingyan water festival, they were able to study Myanmar cultural heritage and to show their traditions and culture.

Thanks to the Central Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races chaired by Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, the Work Committee, the subordinate committees at different levels and the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, towns as well as villages in border areas are making progress with high momentum and the development gap between them has become narrower and narrower.

The members of Karaweik Palace art troupe entertained the guests with Myanmar traditional dances.
