Yangon, 4 April—Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Senegal which falls on 4 April 2001.

April0400000.jpg (18773 bytes)Yangon, 3 April — A two-storey convent school, donated by the Embassy of Japan, was opened at Dhammaythaka Nunnery in Mayangon, here this morning.Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt unveiled the signboard of the school.

Also present were Presiding Nun Agga Maha Gandavacaka Pandita Daw Dhammesi of the Nunnery, ministers, deputy ministers, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori and staff, the joint secretary of Yangon City Development Committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, local authorities and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade.Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko and Ambassador Mr Shigeru Tsumori formally opened the building.

The Secretary-1 and party then inspected the school.Mr Shigeru Tsumori explained the purpose of donating the school building.Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko spoke words of thanks.

The ambassador presented the related documents to the deputy minister.The deputy minister also presented a certificate of honour to the ambassador.The Secretary-1 and party posed for photo together with the ambassador and staff.

The 230-foot by 29-foot reinforced concrete building is 33 feet high. Each of the six 23-foot by 29-foot classrooms on the ground floor can accommodate 60 nun students. The upper floor houses three dormitories, each with a capacity to accommodate 50 nuns. The measurements of the dormitories are 29-foot by 58-foot. The building has ten toilets on the ground floor and another ten on the upper floor which also houses a bathroom.The building was built at a cost of K 36 million. The contractor was Ace Con-struction Group under the management of U Tint Hsan.

Secretary-1 accepts cash donations for ordination hall

April0400014.jpg (15497 bytes)Yangon, 3 April—Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the cash donation ceremony for Mahazaya Mingala three-storey ordination hall of Bangladesh Monastery in Tamway Township this evening.

Present on the occasion were Presiding Sayadaw of the monastery Bhaddanta Panña-jota and members of the Sangha, nuns, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, pilgrims from Ywataw Village in Bangladesh and invited guests.

The Secretary-1 paid homage to the Presiding Sayadaw and accepted K 2.5 million donated by the pilgrims from Ywataw Village in Bangladesh and K 500,000 by U Win Naing-Daw Cho Cho family of Pyae Sone Win Naing Co. Then, he presented certificates of honour to the donors shared the merits gained.

( 3 ) Athletes with high potential to win medals to be sent to SEA Games

Myanmar National Olympic Council holds meeting 2/2001

Yangon, 3 April — Myanmar National Olympic Council held meeting 2/2001 at National Indoor Stadium-1 here this afternoon, addressed by Chairman of MNOC Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Deve-lopment Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said at the first MNOC meeting, matters relating to selection and training of athletes to the 21st Southeast Asian Games were discussed in detail.The present meeting was to review the situation and prospects of the athletes undergoing training for the SEA Games, he said.

Of the 32 sport events of the XXI SEA Games, Myanmar aimed at taking part in the 27 events. Athletes for 22 events are undergoing training at present.After assessing all the situations such as the process of training, the degree of the quality of the athletes, records, winning prospects, morale of the athletes and their zeal,
only the athletes who have potentials to win medals are to be sent to the Games.

It is also required to study the training process, records and developments of the athletes of the other participating countries. After objectively assessing the situations, arrangements should be made correctly and justly to train and send the athletes who have high potentials to win victories at the Games.

Training should be given to the selected athletes based on the development of the sports techniques and spiritual ability in order to uplift the nation’s dignity.The Ministry of Sports has sponsored a sports psychology workshop; it is required to hold such workshops more.

All should strive to successfully host the 55th World Bodybuilding Championships and the Sixth Asian Wushu Championships in Myanmar.

Also present were members of MNOC, ministers, members of MOC, members of Committee to ensure victories for Myan-mar sports, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, officials of Sports and Physical Education Department and guests.

Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint reported on preparation and training for participation in the SEA Games, progress during the first three months of 2001, arrangements for hosting invitctional competitions with teams  from  abroad, change of events in the XXI SEA Games, change of principles for presentation of medals, numbers of countries to be taken part in the games, hosting of the 6th Wushu Championship Tournament, the 8th ASEAN Football Federation Congress and meeting of the 6th ASEAN Football Federation Council, programmes (regional matches) for football matches, opening of summer sports courses, education of sports psychology and holding of the 55th World Bodybuilding Championship.

President of Myanma Football Federation Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik reported on matters relating to Myanma football, formation of tentatively selected men’s and women’s football teams and youth selected team, holding of Inter-State/Division Football Tournament in age group-wise, football marches in various regions of the State and Division and providing assistance to football teams.

Chairman of Myanmar Bodybuilding and Physical Culture Federation Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung reported on arrangements for hosting of the 55th World Bodybuilding Championship in Myanmar.The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the Secretary-1.

( 4 ) Second Mekong Sub-Regional Meeting successfully concludes

 

Yangon, 3 April— The Second Mekong Sub-RegionalApril0400019.jpg (19576 bytes) Meeting of the APC on Refugees Displaced Persons and Migrants successfully concluded at Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Phaya Road this afternoon.

Present were officials of APC, IOM and UNHCR, leaders and members of delegations from Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the Union of Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand and observers from Brunai Darussalam.

The meeting was presided over by leader of Myanmar delegation Director-General of Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay who delivered a speech.

The meeting agenda was submitted and approved. Delegates exchanged information on displaced persons and migrants and reported on the best measures to solve the problem.

They approved agreement on migrants and matters to be discussed at the next meeting. They also discussed the date and place of the Third Mekong Sub-Regional Meeting. Officials of APC, IOM and UNHCR and leaders and members of the delegations posed for documentary photo.

The delegates, accompanied by officials, visited Shwedagon Pagoda, the National Museum and Myanma Gem Mart.

Japanese youths conclude visit

Yangon, 3 April—The Japanese youths from Fukuoka, Japan, led by Mr Shinichiro Muta of Executive Committee for Organizing Asian Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC), who were currently in Yangon, visited Shwedagon Pagoda and Modern Communication Teaching Centre of No 1 BEHS, Dagon Township on 1 April afternoon.

A ceremony to bid farewell to the guests was held at the hall of the school. The Japanese and Myanmar students sang songs and perfonel dances in turns. A dinner was hosted in their honour.

On 2 April, the supervisors of APCC and the Japanese students visited Yangon City golf course and they were seen off at the airport in the evening by the officials from Ministry of Education, Myanmar students and families.

Deputy Minister for Information arrives back from Japan

 

Yangon, 3 April-Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein arrived back here this evening after studying information services in Japan from 28 March to 3 April at the invitation of Japanese government. The deputy minister was welcomed back at the airport by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, Managing Director of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise U Bo Kyi, Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun, General Manager of Printing and Publishing Enterprise Lt-Col Thet Soe, Head of Office Captain Soe Aung and Japanese Embassy staff. Managing Director of PPE Col Myint Thein also arrived back on the same flight.

Implementation of the socio-economic development project in border areas was discussed. President of UMFCCI meets Ambassador of Pakistan

Yangon, 3 April- President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and Joint-Secretary (2) Dr Maung Maung Lay met Ambassador of Pakistan Mr M Yousuf Shah at the headquarters of UMFCCI this morning. They discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

( 6 ) Foodstuff donated by wellwishers sent to Tatmadawmen in far-flung forward areas

Yangon, 4 April—Foodstuff and gifts donated by wellwishers to Tatmadawmen discharging national defence duties at the risk of their lives in far-flung forward areas continued to be sent to the camps in remote forward areas.

Foodstuff and gifts which arrived at Kengtung by convey on 31 March were transported to Tachilek on 1 April.

A ceremony to hand over the foodstuff and gifts donated by wellwishers was held at Aung Myat Hall in Tachilek on 2 April, attended by Head of Office of Strategic Studies Col Than Tun and military officers, Tactical Operations Commander of Tachilek Station Col Soe Thein and Tatmadawmen, townselders, departmental officials, members of Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross Brigade and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association.

Head of Office of Strategic Studies Col Than Tun explained facts about the donations and transport of foodstuff and gifts to the remote forward areas.

Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Thein expressed thanks.Then, Col Than Tun handed over foodstuff and gifts to Col Soe Thein.Next, Col Soe Thein together with Col Than Tun and party sent the gifts to camp commanders of the respective camps in far-flung front-line areas and Col Soe Thein explained the goodwill and national spirit of well-wishers. Col Than Tun and party continued transporting the gifts from Tachilek to Monghsat by convey.

Talks hailing Armed Forces Day held

Yangon, 3 April—The district-level talks hailing the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day were held at Satyaungbilu Hall in Tamu Township on 24 March.

Secretary of Tamu District Union Solidarity and Development Association U Saw Naing presided over the talks and district USDA executives, organisers and members gave talks.

Present were the Secretaries of Tamu District/Township USDAs, executives and members, members of War Veteran Organisation, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Brigade totalling over 1,200.

To hail the Anniversary Armed Forces Day, the district-level talks were held at Basic Education High School in Monywa on 24 March morning, attended by the Secretary of Monywa District USDA, executives and members, members of WVO, MCWA, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Brigade totalling over 550.

Secretary of Monywa District USDA U Tin Win Myint presided over the talks and township USDA executives gave talks.

A similar talks were held at the Sports Ground in Khanti Township on 24 March morning, attended by the Secretary of Khanti Township USDA, executives and members, members of WVO, MCWA, Auxillary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Brigade totalling over 1,000.

Secretary of Khanti District USDA U Aung Chit Lwin presided over the talks and executives gave talks.

Under the sponsorship of Rakhine State USDA, similar talks took place at U Ottama Hall in Sittway on 26 March, attended by USDA delegates of eight townships in Sittway District and guests from social organisations totalling over 550.

Similarly, talks hailing the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day were held under the sponsorship of Kachin State USDA at the association’s office on 25 March with the attendance of 284 USDA members. Hailing the Tatmadawmen, talks sponsored by Sagaing District USDA were also held at the town hall of Sagaing on 25 March attended by Secretaries of Sagaing District/Township USDA, executives and members, members of WVO, MCWA, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Brigade totalling over 500.

U Myint Thein Tun, Secretary of Sagaing District USDA, presided over the talks while Myinmu Township USDA executive Daw Than Than Myint, Sagaing District USDA executive U Myat Min Thein, Myaung Township USDA executive Daw Khin Ma Ma and Sagaing Township executive U Khin Maung Win gave talks.

Armed Forces Day Exhibition continues

Yangon, 3 April—The Armed Forces Day Commemorative Exhibition continued at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road from 9 am to 6 pm today. A total of 1,066 members of the Sangha and people visited the exhibition.

Similarly, the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Arts Competitions and Exhibition continued at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road from 9 am to 6 pm today. A total of 135 members of the Sangha and people visited the exhibition.These exhibitions will be opened from 9 am to 6 pm daily till 4 April.

( 7 ) National Environmental Education Week activities carried out

Yangon, 3 April-National Environmental Education Week cleaning work was performed at Kandaw Mingalar Park in Dagon Township this morning. It was organized by the National Commission for Environmental Affairs, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs and Yangon City Development Committee. A total of 250 people of various organizations participated in the activities. Member of MNWCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Minister for Foreign Affairs Daw San Yon, Chairman of MNWCWA U Sit Myaing, Vice-Chairman Professor Daw May May Yi and members, heads of eight sub-working committees, officials of MNCEA and officials of YCDC were present to encourage the participants.

Administrative Officers Course ends

Yangon, 3 April - Administrative Officers Course No 7 of the Customs Department concluded at Customs Training School this afternoon. Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein said the internal and regional trade conditions and Customs rules and regulations were lectured at the course. The trainees should strive to become models in work efficiency, management and duty consciousness. It is required for them to effectively apply the knowledge gained at the course to smoothly conduct trade and goods evaluation task. The minister presented certificates to the trainees. Fifteen trainees have completed the eight-week course. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Director-General of Customs Department Lt-Col Khin Maung Lin and heads of department.

( 8 ) Cooperative Products Exhibition continues

Yangon, 3 April—The Cooperative Products Exhibition continued for the second day at Cooperative Commercial Centre at Saya San Plaza in Bahan Township today.

Various kinds of personal goods and household goods were displayed and sold at 86 booths of State/Division Cooperative Societies, and 83 booths of State-owned economic enterprises, companies and entrepreneurs.

Cooperative Exports and Imports Enterprise displayed export products such as tapestries, marionettes, beans & pulses, plastic raw materials, fertilizers, chemicals and car tyres. At Mandalay Division Cooperatives booth, dairy products, jams, coffee, books, sculptures, tapestries and marionettes, clothes, furniture, lacquerwares, bamboo products and others were exhibited. On 4 April, people can enjoy the Solo Show, entertainment of Snow White Modelling and Dancing Group, Karaoke lounge at the exhibition and Vocalists Tu Tu, Kabyar Bwe Hmu, Thiri Ko Ko and others will entertain the visitors together with the Spectrum Music Band.

High school level completion certificates presented

Yangon, 3 April —A ceremony to present the high school level completion certificates for 2000-2001 academic year to students was held at Theingi Shwewa Hall of Basic Education High School No 2 in Hline Township on 1 April morning.

Present were Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department U Tin Win and officials, members of School Board of Trustees,  members of Parent-Teacher Association, teachers and students.

Headmistress Daw Nan Hla Aye made a speech on the occasion.Then, Headmistress Daw Nan Hla Aye presented certificates to 190 students.A similar ceremony was held at Myat Pan Thazin Hall of BEHS No 4 in Tamway Township this morning.Present were Deputy Director (Education) of No 3 Basic Education Department U Nu, Township Education Officer U Hla Shwe and officials and students.Headmistress Daw Hla Sein explained the purpose of the ceremony and presented certificates to 293 students.

Accounting (grade-2 and grade-3) courses end

Yangon, 3 April -The concluding ceremony of Accounting (grade-2 and grade-3) Course No 70 of Auditor's General Office for the staff of the ministries was held at the training school of Auditor's General Office this morning. Present were Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Auditor-General U Khin Win, Director-General of Auditor's General Office Daw Thin Thin, Deputy Director-General Daw Tin Kyi Oo,directors, officials, lecturers and trainees. Deputy Auditor-General U Khin Win made a speech. Altogether 163 trainees attended the four-month course.

( 9 ) Opium seized in Pinlaung

Yangon, 3 April-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and Ward Peace and Development Council, acting on information, searched the house of U Kut, son of U Tone, at Yein (Kayin) Village, Myaukhtiphwa Village-tract in Pinlaung Township, Shan State (South) and seized two packets of raw opium weighing 2.775 kilo wrapped in blue rain coat plastic sheet and kept in a bamboo basket. Action is being taken against him in accord with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the Myanmar Police Station concerned.
