Yangon, 20 March-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township at 6.15 pm today, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept.

The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, officials, technicians and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

First, the Secretary-1 paid homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image.Then, Secretary-1
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected progress of work in carving the image and other tasks and gave necessary instructions to the officials.Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt also inspected all-round construction work of the image.At the briefing hall, the Secretary-1 inspected samples of gold-gilded ceiling to be installed at Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi.The Secretary-1 gave instructions to officials and left there.

( 2 )Tatmadaw columns continue parade drills

Yangon, 20 March — Tatmadaw columns which will take part in the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade continued drills from Myoma Grounds to the Resistance Part today.

Under the leadership of Parade Commander Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min and Joint Parade Commander Col Hla Tun, the Anawrahta column led by Col San Aye Hla, Kyansittha column led by Col Sein Win, Bayintnaung column led by Col Aye Myint Maung, Nawade column led by Capt Aye Pe (Navy), Aungzeya column led by Col Thein Hlaing, Hsinbyushin column led by Col Myo Thant, Bandoola column led by Col Htay Aung, Myawady column led by Col Aung Win and Aung San column led by Col Hla Ngwe continued drills from 5.30 am to 10.30 am.

( 3 ) Distribution of farm produce at reasonable prices stressed

Yangon, 20 March — Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met trainees of grade-1 and grade-2 administration courses of General Administration Department in Central Institute of Civil Services (Lower Myanmar) this morning.

The minister stressed the need to make efforts for successful implementation of the State’s objectives, to dutifully discharge the duties assigned to them by the Ministry of Home Affairs, to become reliable force for the nation and to successfully implement rural development plans.

Accompanied by officials, the minister visited the vegetable farm of the ministry at Nyaunghnapin village, Hmaw-by Township, Yangon Division.

At the briefing hall, the minister heard a report on cultivation and production of the farm and distribution of vegetable and livestock products to tax-free markets, presented by officials.

The minister spoke of the need to extend crop cultivation, to systematically use pesticides and to distribute the products to tax-free markets at reasonable prices.The minister then inspected the thriving vegetable fields.

Yangon, 20 March-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay received Chief of Mission of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Mr Rajiv Kapur at his office at 10.30 am today.Also present were Joint-Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win, committee member Col Tin Soe, heads of departments, deputy heads of departments and officials.

Yangon, 20 March-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Chairman of Board of Directors Mr Kostiukov of JSC Nakhodka Marine Commercial Port, Russia and party at his office at 3 pm today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt and responsible officials.Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received President Mr Koki Onodera of Yangon International Hotel at his office at 11 am today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism U Khin Maung Latt and responsible officials.

( 5 Wellwishers donate foodstuff for Tatmadawmen

Yangon, 20 March — A ceremony to hand over foodstuff donated by wellwishers for Tatmadawmen serving national defence duties in forward areas at the risk of their lives was held at Triangle Region Command in Kengtung yesterday.General Staff Officer (Grade-I) of Office of Strategic Studies Lt-Col Than Aung handed over the gifts to Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe. The gifts included 15 kinds of foodstuff weighting 28 tons.

Garbage trucks handed over to YCDC

Yangon, 20 March-A ceremony to hand over three garbage trucks donated by Japan to Yangon City Development Committee was held in front of the City Hall at 9 am today.

Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay accepted the donation and presented a certificate of honour to the donor.Also present were Joint-Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win, committee member Col Tin Soe, heads of departments, deputy heads of departments and officials and Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori.

On behalf of Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo Japan, the Japanese ambassador presented documents related to the garbage trucks to the mayor.

The mayor and the ambassador inspected the garbage trucks which will be used for sanitation work of Yangon City.

High school level completion certificate-presentation ceremony held

Yangon, 20 March—A ceremony to present basic education high school level completion certificates to students who had completed the tenth standard for 2000-2001 was held at No 2 Basic Education High School in Sangyoung Township this morning, attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, the directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, departmental heads, guests, Headmistress Daw Khin May Gyi and teachers, and students who had completed the tenth standard. Headmistress Daw Khin May Gyi made a speech and presented basic education high school level completion certificates to 435 students.

The ceremony is a part of education promotion programmes that include presenting basic education high school level completion certificates to students who had completed the tenth standard, basic education middle school level completion certificates to students who have completed the eighth standard and basic education primary school level completion certificates to students have completed the fourth standard.

UMFCCI officials meet Indian FICCI delegates

Yangon, 20 March—President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, Joint Secretary-2 U Pyone Maung Maung, central executive committee members and executives of UMFCCI and Myanmar Women's Entrepreneurs Association, and private entrepreneurs met a delegation led by Ms Renuka Shah of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Ladies Organization, India at the office of UMFCCI this morning.

They cordially discussed matters related to promote cooperation on commerce and trade, investment, banking services and information technology between the two countries.

( 6 ) Commander meets trainees to USDA courses

Yangon, 20 March — Member of the Panel of Patrons of Union Solidarity and Development Association Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann met trainees who will attend Myanmar and International Studies Course No 2, International Relations Course No 6 and Executives Advanced Management Course No 9, which will be held under the sponsorship of USDA Headquarters, at Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Office on 17 March.

Also present were members of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council, officials, Secretary of Division USDA U Than Tun and secretaries of District and Township USDAs and the trainees.Cash assistance was presented to the trainees.

Accompanied by officials, the commander met local authorities and departmental personnel in Einme and discussed matters relating to agriculture, livestock breeding and regional development undertakings.

In Pantanaw Township, the commander and party inspected land reclamation projects at Mogok-Deedok (North) wetland areas.

Officials of First Top Co Ltd and Olympic Co Ltd which are taming land in the areas reported to the commander on progress of work.In the afternoon, the commander and party inspected the land reclamation project of Yuzana Agriculture Group which is being implemented at Mogok-Deedok (South) wetland areas in the township. The commander looked into the requirements presented by the company officials.At 4 pm, the commander met local authorities and members of Division and District Agricultural Development Supervisory Committees at the meeting hall of construction group 6 of Irrigation Department in the township.The commander discussed matters related to agriculture, livestock breeding and regional development tasks.

Commander attends prize and certificate-presentation ceremony

Yangon, 20 March—A ceremony to present prizes and certificates to members of the Sangha and nuns who passed the five Tipitaka Nikaya, Dhammaçariya and Pahtamapyan Examinations for 2000 held at Monywa Exam Centre in Monywa District, Sagaing Division, was held at the town hall of Monywa on 18 March.

It was attended by members of the Sangha and nuns led by State Ovadaçariya Central Working Committee Sayadaws, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win and wife, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Soe Myint and wife, division/district level departmental officials, townselders and others.

Presiding Sayadaw of Jotikarama Kyaung of Monywa invested the congregation with the Five Precepts and the commander supplicated on religious matters and the ceremony.

Then, the commander, the deputy commander and officials presented prizes and certificates to members of the Sangha who passed the exams.

Later, Daw Than Than Nwe, wife of the commander, and members of the Work Committee for Supervision of Women’s Affairs presented prizes and certificates to nuns who passed the exams.

Afterwards, Presiding Sayadaw of Jotikarama Kyaung delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Commander inspects Laukkai-Kongyan road

Yangon, 20 March—Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, accompanied by officials, inspected Laukkai-Kongyan road on 12 March. Officials reported to the Commander on work and he attended to the needs.Afterwards, the Commander met with government employees at the office of Kongyan Township General Administration Department. Departmental officials reported to the commander on work.Later, the Commander inspected development undertakings in Kongyan.

Commander inspects development tasks

Yangon, 20 March—Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye accompanied by departmental officials inspected Super One Uphill Resort, Super One Department Store and the cinema at Thandaung hill station in Kayin State, constructed by Ar Yone Oo Construction Co, and heard the reports by the officials on 17 March morning.

After leaving instructions there, the commander met with the departmental officials at Bayintnaung Yeiktha. Township Chairman U Yin Htwe reported on tasks for regional development, agriculture, education and health, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Myint Aung on construction of a two-lane road, Deputy Director U Than Hlaing of State Deve-lopment Affairs Department on tarring of the roads. Brig-Gen Win Myint of Thandaung Station presented supplementary reports.The commander gave instructions and attended to the needs.

( 7 ) Jetty of Tet Toe Aung Co Ltd opened

Yangon, 20 March—A ceremony to open newly-built jetty of Tet Toe Aung Co Ltd jointly constructed by Tet Toe Aung Co Ltd and Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems of the Ministry of Transport was held at the jetty in the compound of the department on Lower Pazundaung Road here this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at Prime Minister’s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, deputy ministers, departmental heads, Managing Director of Tet Toe Aung Co Ltd and members of the Board of Directors, staff and guests.

Director-General of DWRIRS U Chit Khin, Director-General of Fisheries Department U Than Tun and Managing Director of the company U Htin Kyaw formally opened the jetty.Then, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe formally unveiled the signboard of the company.Next, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Managing Director U Htin Kyaw made speeches and inspected the jetty.

The modern jetty, 160 feet long, 120 feet wide and 20 feet high, installed with heavy machinery, was built at a cost of K 60 million without foreign assistance.

 H&T Minister inspects booth and hotels

Yangon, 20 March—Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials, inspected the preparation to open the booth of the ministry at the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition to be held at Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Then, the minister inspected private-owned Savoy hotel and Guest Care hotel on Dhammazedi Road in Bahan Township, Pansea hotel on Tawwin Road in Dagon Township and gave instructions on upgrading of hotel services, preserving of traditional culture, observance of rules and regulations.

( 8 ) Management Course of Ministry of Industry-1 concludes

Yangon, 20 March—Management Course No 1/2001 of Ministry of Industry-1 concluded at the training hall of the ministry on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon with an address by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung.Also present were Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry course instructors and trainees.The minister presented prizes to outstanding trainees. Forty trainees attended the seven-week course.

Minister inspects tunnelling of Ponnyataung

Yangon, 20 March—Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Railways Col Min Swe and officials, inspected the construction of Kyaw-Yemyetni railroad section on Pakokku-Gangaw-Kalay Road and gave necessary instructions on 18 March.

On 19 March, the minister inspected the construction of Kyaw-Yemyetni railroad section in the west of Ponyataung and tunnelling of Ponyataung and gave instructions on maintenance and work-site safety to the officials.

Matters on livestock breeding, fisheries co-ordinated

Yangon, 20 March—Work coordination meeting of Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and entrepreneurs who are engaged in offshore fishing was held at the meeting hall of Fisheries Department on Hsinmin Road, Ahlon Township this morning, attended by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein.

Director-General U Than Tun of Fisheries Department gave an account of plans to be implemented by joint-venture and private companies and rules and regulations to be abided by in accord with Myanmar Fisheries Law.

Afterwards, adviser to the ministry Director-General (Retd) U Soe Win reported on work being carried out at Myeik International Fish Market. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The minister fulfilled the needs of entrepreneurs.

( 9 ) Athletes preparing for SEA Games

Yangon, 20 March - Chairman of Committee to Bring Victory to Myanmar Sports Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay and Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint visited tentatively selected marksmen practising Shooting for XXI SEA Games at the South Okkalapa Shooting Range this morning. The mayor urged them to try to win victory through fair means and to have the winning spirit. They and inspected sports equipment.At the briefing hall, an official explained progress of the athletes undergoing training.Accompanied by officials, the mayor and the minister, inspected practising of boxers at Youths Training Centre (Thuwunna).

Illegally-imported Thailand-made

taste enhancer monosodium glutamate

and soft drinks banned

1. Thailand-made taste enhancer monosodium glutamate of all brands including ladle brand, pot brand, red leaf brand, palace brand, sunflower brand, sardan brand, and soft drinks of various kinds including red bull brand, Lippo brand and shark brand are being imported and sold illegally by some smugglers through Thailand/Myanmar border by land or sea.

2. It was already announced to the public that the consumption of the above-mentioned Thailand-made taste enhancer monosodium glutamate and soft drinks were banned because, according to the laboratory experiments of the Ministry of Health, they contain chemicals that are injurious to the health of human beings; users can develop disease in the long run; and their health can fail, which can at last result in loss of life.

3. With a view to safeguarding public health and life, therefore, it is announced to the public that the import, sale and consumption of Thailand-made taste enhancer monosodium glutamate of all brands including ladle brand, pot brand, red leaf brand, palace brand, sunflower brand, sardan brand, and all the illegally-imported soft drinks are banned.
