Yangon, 26 Feb-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Vice-President
Ms Zhou Li and party of China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export
Corporation of the People's Republic of China at his office at 3.30 pm today. Similarly,
Minister U Aung Thaung met Mr Zhang Sheng Can and party of China Hainan Jia Yi Machine

Yangon, 26 Feb-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung
Maung Thein received Director-General Mr Bernard Vellat of Office International des
Epizooties (OIE), who arrived here to attend the 7th Meeting of the OIE Sub-Commission for
FMD in South-East Asia to be held in Yangon at his office at 1 pm today. Also present at
the call were Deputy Minister U Aung Thein, the directors-general and managing directors
of departments and enterprises under the ministry, the head of office and officials.
Minister meets foreign visitors
Yangon, 26 Feb-Minister for Culture U Win Sein met noted Japanese
artist Ms Miyoh Yamada of Myanmar Economic and Management Institute's (MEMI) programme,
Japan, former Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Chairman of Japan-Myanmar Friendship
Association Mr Tagima and Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori at his office
this morning. Also present were directors-general and officials of Japanese Embassy. Ms
Miyoh Yamada was currently here to donate her painting by the name of "
Tranquillity in forest brightness for tomorrow " that won special prize in the
Millenium Painting Competition held at Vatican City to National Museum. A ceremony to
donate the above-mentioned painting was held at the hall of National Museum on Pyay Road
at 10 am today.
It was attended by Director-General U Myint Thein Swe of Department of
Cultural Institute, Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori, Chairman of Myanmar
Economic and Management Institute's (MEMI) former Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr
Tagima, artist Ms Miyoh Yamada, deputy director-general of Department of Cultural
Institute, directors, officials and guests. First, Mr Tagima elaborated on arrangements
made for the ceremony and Ms Miyoh Yamada on the painting. Director-General U Myint Thein
Swe accepted the painting and presented a certificate of honour to the donor. Then, the
director-general spoke words of thanks.
Deputy Minister receives Chairman of Myanmar Care Products and
CFA Investments
Yangon, 26 Feb-Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than
Tun received Chairman of Myanmar Care Products and CFA Investments Mr Bernard Forey at the
office of the Minister for Finance and Revenue at noon today. They discussed matters
related to mutual interests between the two countries. Also present at the call were
Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and Director-General of Internal
Revenue Department U Chit Swe.

( 4 ) Meeting
of OIE Sub-commission for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in SEA opens
Yangon, 26 Feb- A ceremony to open the 7th Meeting of Office
International des Epizooties (OIE) Sub-commission for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in
South East Asia, hosted for the first time in Myanmar, was held at the Traders Hotel on
Sule Pagoda Road this morning. Present were Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen
Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister U Aung Thein, departmental heads of the Ministry of
Livestock and Fisheries, Director-General Dr Bernard Vallat of Office International des
Epizooties (OIE), Ambassadors of ASEAN nations dele-gates of ASEAN member nations,
representatives of OIE member countries and guests. Director-General of Livestock Breeding
and Veterinary Department U Maung Maung Nyunt extended greetings. Then, Director-General
of OIE Dr Bernard Vallat, Director-General U Kyaw Lwin of Directorate of Livestock and
Fisheries and Chairman of Sub-commission for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in South East
Asia Dr Ulrich Kihm gave speeches. Afterwards, the first-day session of the meeting began.
The meeting will be held till 2 March.
Foreign entrepreneurs observe regional development tasks in
border areas
Yangon, 26 Feb - The foreign entrepreneurs of Tuesday Club who are
doing business in Myanmar, together with officials of the Office of Strategic Studies,
made a study tour of the border areas in northern Shan State from 23 to 25 February. The
study group left here for Lashio on 23 February by special flight, and proceeded to
Khwema, Lonhtan and Pangsan in Wa region, Special Region-2, northern Shan State, by
helicopter. Leader of Wa peace group U Pauk Yu Chan and leaders welcomed the study group
and gave an account of regional development tasks. They observed regional development
tasks such as opium substitute crops plantations, factories, workshops and mines in Wa
region, and spent the night at Pangsan. They went to Maingmaw and Namtit in Wa region and
Chinshwehaw in Kokang region, Special Region-1, northern Shan State.
Nepalese delegation visits Kyauktan Township
Yangon, 26 Feb- A Nepalese delegation led by Deputy Speaker Ms Chitra
Lekha Yadav of Lower House of Parliament of the Kingdom of Nepal, currently here to
observe the Fourth National Sanitation Week of Myanmar, accompanied by Dr Khin Maung Lwin
of Health Planning Department and Dr Pe Win of Health Department, arrived in Kyauktan
Township yesterday afternoon. Head of Yangon Division Health Department Dr Tin Maung Win
and officials explained facts about activities of Fourth National Sanitation Week in the
township. The guests then went to Pandaw Sanpya Village in the township and observed
activities of Fourth National Sanitation Week in the village and development tasks.
Afterwards, they paid obeisance to Kyaikhmawwun Yelai Pagoda.

Yangon, 26 Feb - A ceremony to open the factory of MANI Yangon Ltd was
held at the factory, No 630, Hlengoke-chaungkwin, Hmawby Township, on Pyay Road this
morning. Present were Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's
Office Brig-Gen Abel and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing,
Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win,
Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Ambassador of Japan Mr
Shigeru Tsumori and officials.
President of MANI Yangon Ltd Mr Kanji Matsutani gave a speech. Managing
Director of Myanma Foodstuff Industries U Myint Oo and Mr Kanji Matsutani formally opened
the factory. MANI Yangon Ltd produces instruments for the operating theatre and for dental
and eye operation with cent-per-cent investment of MANI Inc. of Japan, and they are
produced with CP system. The products of MANI Inc are exported to Japan, South America and
European countries.
Minister for Industry-1 inspects pharmaceutical raw material
production unit of MPF
Yangon, 26 Feb-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, together with
Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and officials, arrived at the pharmaceutical raw
material production unit of Myanma Pharmaceutical Factory near Hlengoke-chaung Village in
Hmawby Township this morning. Factory Manager U Zaw Win reported on the cultivation of
herbal plants. Managing Director of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries U Myint Oo gave a
supplementary report. The minister gave instructions on extension of cultivation of herbal
plants. He inspected herbal plants and production of magnesium carbonate, dehydrated
ferous sulphate, herbal nurseries and pepper plants.
Work coordinated to hold religious title conferring ceremony and
rice offering ceremony
Yangon, 26 Feb - The third coordination meeting on holding the
religious title conferring ceremony and the rice offering ceremony at Thiri Mingala Kaba
Aye Hill was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Religious Affairs this afternoon.
Present were Chairman of the Leading Committee for Holding Religious Title Conferring
Ceremony and Rice Offering Ceremony Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Chairman
of Work Committee Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko and
officials of the leading committee, the work committee and subcommittees. Minister U Aung
Khin made a speech. Then, the officials of various sub-committees reported on progress of
work and tasks to be carried out. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the
minister.

( 6 ) Minister inspects bran oil
mills
Yangon, 26 Feb - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, together with
Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw San and Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce
Trading U Min Hla Aung, inspected No 01 Bran Oil Mill in Kamayut Township this evening.
Mill Manager U Kyaw Win reported on production of bran oil. The minister gave instructions
on production of bran oil mill to meet the target and maintenance and cleanliness of the
mill. Afterwards, the minister and party went to No 03 Bran Oil Mill and Palm Oil Mill in
Insein Township. Mill Manager U Nyunt Aung reported on production of raw bran oil and palm
oil. The minister gave instructions on production of raw bran oil to meet the target in
February and March, the processing of raw palm oil imported from Malaysia at the mill and
storage of palm oil.
Pilgrims invited to Kyaungdawya Pagoda
Yangon, 26 Feb-Pagoda Board of Trustees has invited Buddhist pilgrims
from all over the country to Kyaungdawya Pagoda in Kyaungdawya Myothit, Pwint-byu
Township, Minbu District, Magway Division. Lord Buddha left two footprints on the left and
right banks of Mann Creek on His return from giving sermons to human beings while He was
residing at Sandakunatha Kyaungdaw (now Kyaungdawya Pagoda). The origin of Satawya
was Kyaungdawya. It was said in history that only if one gets to Kyaungdawya while in
Satawya, it will be beneficial to him for knowing complete history. Pilgrims are invited
to the pagoda where there are restaurants, guest houses and Zayats for them. The pagoda is
completed with modern amenities all the year round. Pilgrims themselves can offer
goldfoils to the pagoda.-

( 7 ) Deputy Minister inspects Yadanabon Dockyard,
Bhamo and Myitkyina Airports
Yangon, 26 Feb- Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and
party inspected construction of entrance road to the Mandalay International Airport and
planting of windbreak on both sides of the road on 24 February. The deputy minister then
gave necessary instructions. On 25 February, the deputy minister and party inspected
Pyadashin and Pyigyi Shwekeinnayi Ships at Gawwein Jetty. The deputy minister gave
instructions on earning of income to exceed the target and shipping facilities for
tourists to be provided. At Yadanabon Dockyard of Inland Water Transport, the deputy
minister and party inspected construction of the dockyard. The deputy minister and party
arrived at Bhamo where he was welcomed by Brig-Gen Kyaw Oo Lwin of Bhamo Station and
officials. The deputy minister inspected major repair of the runway and gave necessary
instructions. In Myitkyina, the deputy minister called on Commander of Northern Command
Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and reported on progress in construction of the runway of Bhamo Airport
and greening tasks. Kachin State Superintending Engineer U Than Nyunt Win and Chairman of
Myitkyina District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Hla Thaung reported on repair of
the runway and greening and beautifying tasks. Then, the deputy minister and party
inspected repair of the runway of Myitkyina Airport, greening tasks and planting of
flowering trees.
Township development tasks discussed in Namhsan
Yangon, 26 Feb-A coordination meeting on development of Kholan
Village-tract in Namhsan Township, Loilem District, southern Shan State, was held at the
village on 22 February. Present were Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council
Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, senior officers of the command, members of
Shan State Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, the chairman of Loilem
District Peace and Development Council and townselders. The commander delivered a speech.
The departmental officials reported on the work done, tasks to be undertaken and
requirements. The commander fulfilled their requirements. The commander met village
elders, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, teachers and
delegates of the region. They discussed regional development tasks. The commander
presented offertories to nine members of the Sangha led by Abbot Sayadaw Bhaddanta
Cinta-kavi. He also presented K 1.2 million donated by Shan State Peace and Development
Council to the fund for offering Shwethingan to pagodas in Kyaingtaung Village-tract to
local station commander Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint. The commander inspected arrangements
for generating hydel power and the digging of canal. On 23 February, the commander
inspected construction of Nammawkhauksit Bridge in Namhsan Township.

Yangon, 26 Feb-Donations were presented to members of the Sangha who
will attend the 17th 47-member Plenary Meeting of the Fourth State Sangha Maha Nayaka
Committee, the Seventh Meeting of the Fourth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha
and Religious Title Conferring Ceremony, at Kaba Aye here this morning. It was attended by
member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Minister for Religious Affairs
U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General of Department for
Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Director-General of Religious Affairs
Department Dr Myo Myint and directors and donors. The congregation received the Five
Precepts from the Sayadaws.

K 108,000 donated to trust fund for poor and needy patients
Yangon, 26 Feb - U Sein Htoo and Daw Swe Swe Htaik of Room No 13,
Building No 15, U Wisara Housing Estate, Dagon Township, donated K 108,000 to the trust
fund for the poor and needy patients, their retinas to the retina bank and their bodies to
the Institute of Medicine-1 to mark the 25th anniversary of their marriage at the office
of the medical superintendent of Yangon General Hospital today; Present were Medical
Superintendent Dr Teik Wan, members of the hospital administration committee and families
of the wellwishers. Wellwisher U Sein Htoo explained the purpose of their donation. The
medical superintendent thanked the wellwishers.
Yangon Division Development Affairs Committee holds third
four-monthly coord meeting
Yangon, 26 Feb-The third four-monthly coordination meeting of Yangon
Division Development Affairs Committee for 2000 was held at the office of YDDAC in
Thanlyin Township this morning. Present were member of the State Peace and Development
Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon
Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council,
members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Executive Officers of
Township Development Affairs Committees and engineers in-charge.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said there are 12 Township
Development Affairs Committees including Cocogyun Township under Yangon Division
Development Affairs Committee and Township Development Affairs Supervisory Committees were
formed on 14 March 1999. Local associations and Development Affairs Committees are to make
efforts for development of townships and villages, he said.
He quoted Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe as saying that rural roads
are to be repaired for ensuring easy transport of rural products to markets in the
respective townships. Only when there are better roads, will transport be easy. Economic,
education and health standards of majority of the people living in rural regions will also
improve. He said that accordingly emphasis must be placed on development of rural areas
after laying down plans. The commander said development affairs committee and rural
development funds are to be utilized in construction of regional development roads linking
villages. He said water supply is a main task of Development Affairs Committee so efforts
are to be made for rural water supply. He also spoke on cleanliness in villages,
availability of pure water and systematic spending of revenues collected. Director of
Yangon Division Development Affairs Committee U Soe Tint discussed instructions of the
minister, the deputy minister and the director-general during the third four-month period.
Executive Officers reported on the work done. The commander met chairmen of District and
Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental officials and discussed digging
of prawn and fish ponds and construction of rural roads in the open season.

) 37,000 Stimulant tablets seized in Muse
Yangon, 26 Feb-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence
unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Ma Yan Meint
Lint (a) Ma Phyu Yi Chin, on 7 February. The authorities arrested Ma Yan Meint Lint (a) Ma
Phyu Yi Chin, daughter of U Yanain Byint, No A/750, Kaungmu Lwe Ward, Muse and Aik San,
son of U Aik, Taung Ward, Muse Township, Shan State (North) together with 2,200 stimulant
tablets bearing the letters "WY". On, further information, the authorities
searched the house of Honshee Shwin, son of U Honpu Yan, Pinlon Street, Kaungmu Lwe Ward,
Muse. The authorities arrested him together with 34,800 stimulant tablets bearing
"WY" and 3,296 stimulant tablets bearing F-2. Action is being taken against the
three under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
Woman drug dealer gets 15 years
Yangon, 26 Feb-A team comprising members of local intelligence unit and
Yangon Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Daw Aye
Myint, 69, of Ward 7, Hlinethaya and found 326.6 grams of marijuana on 3 June 2000. The
Hlinethaya Township Police Force filed a lawsuit against her in accord with the Narcotic
Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon North District court handed down three
years' imprisonment under Section 15 and 15 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on
her to serve separately on 5 January 2001.
