( 1 ) Meeting seeks means to set up e-Application Programmes

Yangon, 27 Jan - A meeting was held to coordinate the e-Application Programmes at Diamond Jubilee Hall this afternoon, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Computer Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, executives of Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Scientist Association and Myanmar Computer Industry Association, officials of the companies concerned and guests. Joint Secretary of e-National Task Force U Pyone Maung Maung explained points about the e-Application Programmes.

President of MCSA U Thein Oo of ACE Company, discussed the topic " Development of IT in Myanmar: Advantages"; U Pyone Maung Maung, the topic " Information and Communication Technology Park (ICI Park) " and setting up of the National Portal; and Chairman of MCIA U Aung Zaw Myint, a member of Winner Computer Group, on the topic "Implementation Plan of ICT Park". Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win discussed matters relating to development of ICT Park.

The Secretary-1 gave suggestions. Afterwards, U Chit Tun Pe of Inforithm reported to the meeting on the trade net, U Tun Thura of MIT Co on e-Reservation/e-Banking, U Nay Tun Thein of Integra System on e-Commerce, U Thaung Su Nyein of Maze Media on e-media, U Hlwan Moe Aung of CYC Training Centre on e-Learning and Dr Aung Maw of CE Technology on e-Bookstore/e-Journal with the help of websites which can be linked with National Portal.

Lt-Col Tin Oo of the Ministry of Defence explained the functions and work programmes of Bagan Cybertech. The Secretary-1 looked into their requirements, saying, the Union of Myanmar has already signed the e-ASEAN agreement as its member.

He said as Myanmar is a member of the e-ASEAN, systematic efforts are required for progress of Information Technology to enable the nation to launch cooperative activities on a par with the ASEAN nations. Thus, IT companies are gathered at the meeting today to seek means to set up an IT Park for progress of Information Technology and to help develop Myanmar's economy through IT.

In other words, it is to set up enterprises based on IT. Thus, the meeting is aimed at paving the way for all the IT companies and IT related entrepreneurs to make collective efforts in accordance with the principles. The IT Park should be set up phase by phase, and that the aims can be realized through harmonious efforts of all. Today's demonstrations clearly indicated the intellectual ability and the innovative talent of Myanmar youth. The standard of innovative and learning skills of Myanmar youth meet the developing technologies of the world.

Bearing in mind as a national cause, all the IT companies should harmoniously take part in the task for emergence of the IT Park and progress of IT. After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the exhibition on the power and functions of the latest version of computers and related equipment.

( 2 Multimedia teaching center open at No 1 BEHS in Hmawby Township

Yangon, 27 Jan-A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre was held at No 1 Basic Education High School in Hmawby Township this morning attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were the ministers, the chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general of departments, chairmen of boards, the deputy director-general, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, District and Township Education Officers, school heads, Headmistress of No 1 BEHS in Hmawby, members of School Board of Trustees, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, and the band troupe, students, wellwishers and guests. Headmistress Daw Than Than of Hmawby No 1 BEHS and Patron of School Board of Trustees Lt-Col Than Nyunt (Retd) formally opened the centre.

Next, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally opened the multimedia teaching centre. The Secretary-1 and party inspected electronic media (audio), reading and computer section, computer aided instruction room, audio visual teaching section, e-Education learning centre, domestic science room, art studio and music room and observed skill demonstration of students. Headmistress Daw Than Than reported on installation of equipment at the centre and Lt-Col Than Nyunt (Retd) on efforts for opening of the centre. Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Than Tin presented K 200,000 for multimedia teaching centre, U Soe Myint of FMI Co K 100,000 and members of School Board of Trustees and parents of the students K 3.5 million to the Secretary-1.

The Secretary-1 presented teaching aid video tapes to Headmistress Daw Than Than. Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe accepted K 300,000 donated by U Aung Ko Win and wife Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Daw Nan Than Htwe, K 100,000 by Ngwe Hsin Co and K 100,000 by Shwe Thanlwin Co.

The Secretary-1 said officials of the Ministry of Education, scholars and teachers drafted education promotion programmes for uplift of national education. Beginning 1998-99 academic year, the education promotion programmes are being implemented phase by phase with the objective of uplifting the national education Standard to meet international level, all-round development of education and narrowing education gap between urban and rural regions, he said. Achievements have been made with the active cooperation of the people, wellwishers and members of School Board of Trustees, he added.

He said the four-year special project for promotion of national education was laid down and implemented with momentum beginning 200-2001 academic year under the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe. Handsome cash awards were presented to students who stood from first to tenth positions in the 2000 matriculation examination under the human resources development programme, he said. Leaning centres were opened at universities, degree colleges and colleges and basic education schools as part of the four-year special project for promotion of national education and Electronic Data Broadcasting System was launched on 1 January 2001.

The Secretary-1 lauded achievements of the school in the inter-school band competition and matriculation examination, systematic training of the teachers and diligence of the students. He called for continued efforts for turning out brilliant intellectuals and intelligentsia who would serve the country. The Secretary-1 signed in the visitors' book. The Secretary-1 and party had photo taken together with teachers, members of School Board of Trustees and students.

Yangon, 27 Jan -Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the dinner to mark the success of 21st Myanmar Dental Surgeon Conference, the Second Joint Meeting of World Dental Federation (FDI) and Myanmar Dental Association (MDA) at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road at 6.30 pm today.

Present also were ministers, members of NHC, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general and rectors of the Ministry of Health, Chairman and members of Myanmar Dental and Oral Council, invited guests and officials of FDI and MDA, delegates to the conference.

Chairman of Myanmar Dental Surgeon Association Professor Dr U Ba Myint made a speech and presented gifts to Dr Nyunt Shwe who won the first prize in Sarpaybeikmam manuscript award (Translation) for 1999, Dr U Kyaw Sein (Deputy Director- Retired) who presented papers from 1st to 20th Dental Surgeon Conferences and Dr U Ko Ko Maw who presented the best paper. Then, Dr KT Nathan of GC (Asia) Co presented medical equipment to Chairman Dr U Ba Myint for Myanmar Dental Surgeon Association. The dinner was hosted in honour of the guests.

( 3 ) Secretary-2 and wife attend entertainment programme of Manipur cultural troupe

Yangon, 27 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe attended the first day entertainment programme of Manipur cultural troupe from India, sponsored by Indian Embassy in Myanmar under the cultural exchange programme between the two countries and in commemoration of the 52nd Founding Anniversary of the Republic of India, at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street this evening.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy) and the Chief of Staff (Air), the Deputy Minister for Science and Technology, heads of departments, Ambassador of India to Myanmar Mr Shyam Saran and Embassy staff, the Ambassadors and Charge d' Affaires ai in Yangon, guests and the people. The Manipur cultural troupe will present entertainment programmes to the public at the National Theatre in Yangon on 28 January and at the National Theatre in Mandalay on 29 January.

( 4 ) Myanmar surgeons successfully perform renal transplant in Mandalay

Yangon, 27 Jan-The renal transplant was performed for the second time at Mandalay General Hospital at 9.40 am yesterday. Present were Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung, Rector of Mandalay Institute of Medicine Professor Dr Soe Tun, Head of Mandalay Division Health Department Dr Thein Tun, Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn, Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Win Shein and the medical superintendents, the professors, and the heads of department.

In-charge of Uro-renal Unit Specialist Dr Khin Maung Htay, Dr Khin Maung Kyaw, Dr Wai Wai Soe and Dr Ye Zaw Win led by Director-General of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) Professor Dr Paing Soe made decision for the operation and carried out the transplant and supervise it.

Ko Shwe Kyaw Tun, 33, the patient, has been suffering from renal complaint for over one year. Though his kidney had been cleaned with the use of kidney machine for 120 times, he had not been cured of the disease and so he underwent the surgical operation. The donor is his mother, Daw Khin Htwe Pyu, 55. Anaesthetists Professor Dr Thant Zin, Dr Khin Khin Nyein, Dr Kyi Kyi San, Dr Aye Ko and Dr Ar Yu of MGH led by Professor Dr Tin Myint of Yangon General Hospital took part in the operation. They started giving anesthesia to the donor at 8.37 am yesterday.

Dr Win Mying, Dr Dr Tun Tun Than, Dr Than Win Zaw led by Professor Dr Than Aye of Urosurgical Unit of YGN in collaboration with Matron Daw Myint Myint Aye and nurses began the surgical operation to take out the kidney from the donor at 9 am and completed it at 9.58 am yesterday. Then, Dr Min Thu, Nurse Daw Mai Htan When led by Professor Dr Than Aye carried out tasks in connection with keeping the kidney good. The operation on the patient started at 9.40 am yesterday and successfully completed at 12.30 am today.

It was carried out by Professor Dr Sai Lun Maung, Specialist Dr Toe Lwin of Urosurgical Unit of MGH led by Professor Dr Than Aye in cooperation with In-charge of Operation Theatre Senior Nurse Naw Frida Thedi and nurses. After the operation, the patient's health conditions is improved. The health conditions of Ma Marlar, who underwent renal transplant on 25 January is also improved. Special health care services are being provided to the patients, who underwent renal transplant at MGH.

( 5 ) Carving of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image continue

Yangon, 27 Jan- Works for all-round development of Mindhamma Hill and construction of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image were implemented in September 2000 with the counsel of Ovadacariya Sayadaws.

Experts, engineers and workers are making efforts with added momentum under the guidance of Head of State Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, instructions of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and supervision of Central Committee for Mindhamma Hill All-round Development. Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and son made finishing touches of the image. Ninety percent of the work of finishing touches has completed.

The engineers and staff of Building Project Special Group-2 of Public Works continued to construct the Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi, southern and northern stairways and retaining wall. Myanmar handicraft technicians U Ohn Tin and U Hla Kyu and party are making the finishing touch of the image, the decoration work of Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi and southern and northern stairways.

Various wut associations recited religious verses from 7 am till 10 pm. Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprises U Tin Kha and wife Daw Myint Myint presented K 200,000 to Patron of the pagoda Board of Trustees U Shein Aung Bo.

U Shein Aung Bo presented a certificate of honour to the donor. Books on religion and general knowledge were sold at the bookshops of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Information on Mindhamma Hill. Donations for the project up to date have amounted to K 134,970,718.

ITBMU Rector Dr Ashin Sila Nanda Bhivamsa (D Litt) honoured

Yangon, 27 Jan-A ceremony to honour Chief Rector of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma-jotikadhaja Dr Ashin Sila Nandabhivamsa (D Litt) on whom Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) was conferred by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt on 9 January 2001, was held at the hall on Kaba Aye Hill, Mayangon Township, this afternoon.

The ceremony was graced by presence of Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Sobhita, Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara and member Sayadaws, Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the University, the Rector Sayadaw, the Pro-Rector Sayadaw, Faculty Sayadaws and Sayadaws (Teaching), Thidagu Sayadaw Ashin Nanissara, the Chief Patron of the State Sangha Pariyatti Sasana University (Yangon) and Sayadaws (Teaching).

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, invited guests, members of the University Council, Pro-Rector (Admin) Dr Hla Pe and officials and trainees of the University. Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Aungmyebonsan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Paindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Minister U Aung Khin and officials presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. Then, Adviser at the State Peace and Development Council U Arnt Maung (Sakkya Thiha Dhammacariya MA Bombay) read out the biography of the Rector Sayadaw. Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Maha Dhamma Kathika Bahujanahitadhara Thidagu World Buddhist University Adipati Sayadaw Ashin Nanissara also read out the biography of the Rector Sayadaw in Myanmar and English. Pro-Rector (Admin) Dr Hla Pe presented missionary work of the Rector Sayadaw with the use of audio visual aids. Afterwards, the Aungmyebonsan Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained, and the ceremony came to a close.

They discussed matters related to bilateral cooperation on trading and investment, holding conferences, seminars and launching courses.

Yangon, 27 Jan-Chairman of Excursion Management Committee for trainees of Primary Assistant Teacher Course No 33 of University for Development of National Races (UDNR) Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than cordially met with the trainees led by Rector of the university Col Zaw Min Thein at No 1 Transit Centre (Bayint Naung), at 4.15 pm today. CEC meeting of Myanmar Rice Millers Association held

Yangon, 27 Jan-Myanmar Rice Millers Association held its third CEC meeting at the meeting hall of the Association on Theinbyu Road, Botahtaung Township, this afternoon. It was attended by members of panel of patrons of the Association, CEC members and executives. Chairman of the Association U Win Myint made a speech. Resolutions in the second CEC meeting and work done were reported by General Secretary U Tin Win, and then approved. Accounts Officer U Mya Than read out the financial statement, followed by a general round of discussions. Chairman U Win Myint made a conclusion remarks after which the meeting came to a close.

( 7 ) Trainees of UDNR Primary Teachership Course No 33 tour Yangon City

Yangon, 27 Jan- Altogether 269 trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 33 of University for Development of National Races led by Rector Col Zaw Min Thein, accompanied by Professor Daw Khin Win and supervisor teachers, arrived here by train for excursion in Yangon At 5.20 am. The trainees were welcomed at Yangon Railways Station by Chairman of Reception and Accommodation Sub-committee Commandant of Defence Services Records Office Brig-Gen Myo Myint, Secretary of Management Committee for Excursion of Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 33 of UDNR Acting Director-General U Hla Kyi of Civil Service Selection and Training Department, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades and officials of Myanma Railways. Then, the excursion group left for No 1 Transit Centre (Bayintnaung) by car. At 8 am, the trainees visited Hlinethaya City of Industry as their first tour.

At Hlinethaya Gymnasium, Deputy Director-General Col Tin Tun of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development extended greetings and explained about Yangon City development tasks and Hlinethaya City of Industry being implemented by DHSHD. Then, trainee Ma Bya Mya of Kayah State spoke words of thanks. Two trainees presented the commemorative pennant to Col Tin Tun. Afterwards, the trainees visited Tokyo Pipe Factory and Polyethylene Bag Factory. Next, they passed through Aung Zeya Bridge across Hline Rover by car and proceeded to People's Square and People's Park on Pyay Road. They were welcomed by Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials. Then, they were served with lunch.

After the lunch, they visited Shweyinbyin modern playground and Pyidaungsu Ayeyeiknyein. The trainees and the administrator of the People's Square and People's Park exchanged commemorative pennants. On arrival at the Defence Services Museum, Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut and officials welcomed them. Maung Zaw Tun Linn of Rakhine State spoke words of thanks. At the National Museum, Director-General U Myint Thein Swe of Department of Cultural Institute and officials welcomed them. The excursion group and the Director-General exchanged commemorative pennants. The trainees then visited booths of the museum and watched Myanmar Apparel Show.

Students of Naunghtao, Hsihseng Township, tour Yangon

Yangon, 27 Jan- At the invitation of Chairman of Border Areas and National Races Development Work Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, a total of 51 students of Affiliated Basic Education High School of Naunghtao, Hsihseng Township, Shan State (South), together with Assistant Director Capt Win Maung of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department and officials, toured downtown Yangon for the fourth day this morning. This morning, they visited National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna and Defence Services Museum. In the afternoon, they went to Thamada Cinema and watched the movie.

USDA Secretariat member hosts dinner in honour of trainees

Yangon, 27 Jan-Union Solidarity and Development Association Member of Secretariat Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay hosted a dinner in honour of trainees of Management Course for Executives No 8 and Accountancy Course No 1 at Yangon Hall on fifth floor of Theingyizay Building D this evening. It was attended by member of secretariat and central executive committee members, officials of YCDC, principal and supervisors of the training school and trainees. First, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win of YCDC extended greetings. Then, Head of Markets Department U Soe Myint presented commemorative pennants to the trainees. Later, a trainee expressed thanks. Then, a dinner was hosted.

( 8 ) ISD soccer tournament continues

Yangon, 27 Jan-The first round of the 46th Inter-State/Division Under-21 Soccer Tournament continued at Mandalay for Upper Myanmar Zone and Pathein for Lower Myanmar Zone today. In Mandalay, Shan State (North) beat Kachin 2-0 and man of the match award went to Kyaw Win Maung of Shan State (North). In Pathein, Kayin State beat Shan State (East) 1-0 and Saw Than Aye of Kayin State stood man of the match award. Mandalay Division will meet Rakhine State at Mandalay while Ayeyawady Division will play against Shan State (South) at Hinthada on 28 January.

( 9 ) 3,000 stimulant tablets seized in Mingala Taungnyunt

Yangon, 27 Jan- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched Khun Kyaw Than at the restaurant on Lu-O-Yon Street in Mingala Taungnyunt Township at 12.45 noon on 22 May 1999. The authorities seized WY brand 3,000 stimulant tablets weighing 0.2622 kilo. Mingala Taungnyunt Police Station filed Khun Kyaw Than, 38, son of U Tin Soe of 214, Myopat Road, MingalaU Ward, Taunggyi, under Sections 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 6 December, Yangon East District Court sentenced Khun Kyaw Than to five years' imprisonment under Section 15 and 25 years' under Section 19 (A) of the law to be served separately.
