Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected development of
Thandaung Hill Station in Thandaung Township and Swachaung Dam Project yesterday.
Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo,
Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung
Khin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers,
the Deputy Minister for Health, the director-general of the State Peace and Development
Council Office and officials, the Senior General left here by air for Toungoo yesterday
morning.
On arrival at Toungoo at 9.15 am, the Senior General and party were welcomed by member
of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development
Council Commander of the Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Thura
Maung Ni, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Chairman of Bago Division
Peace and Development Council (West) Brig-Gen Phone Swe, Brig-Gen Thura Myint Thein of
Toungoo Station, Brig-Gen Aung Win of Ottwin Station, senior military officers, division
level officials and members of Bago Division Union Solidarity and Development Association.
Together with Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, the Senior General and party helicoptered to
Thandaung Hill Station in Thandaung Township, Kayin State. They were welcomed there by the
commander of Thandaung Station and officials.
The Senior General and party observed progress in building of roads and
viewed scenery at the Hill Station. Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye reported to the Senior
General on the brief history of the establishment of the town, the population in its five
wards, rainfall and implementation of Thaukyekhat Hydel Power Project to supply power to
the town.
The commander of Thandaung Station briefed him on growing of coffee,
tea and pine at the town, extension of the circular road and groveling of the roads and

Nyunt on groveling and extension of the roads and up to 30 feet in width, allotment of
plots to entrepreneurs at the three hotel zones and other development activities.
The Senior General gave guidance on development of the town, speaking of the need to
upgrade the roads, to strive for thriving of the plantations, success of poultry farming
and successful planting of tea, coffee, cardamom and cinchona. The Senior General and
party then inspected construction of a cinema and a shopping centre of Super One Co Ltd.
The projects are being implemented by Aryon-Oo Construction Company.
They then looked into the requirements in building of the town archway
and stone garden. In the afternoon, they helicoptered to Swachaung Dam Project in Yedashe
Township.
Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported to
Senior General Than Shwe and party on Swachaung Dam Project and Director-General of
Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win on construction of the dam, outlet conduit, control
tower, spillways and irrigation system.
Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye also reported on extension of double cropping. Senior General
Than Shwe gave guidance. Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected construction of the
main dam with the use of heavy machinery. Swachaung Dam is being built on Swa Creek near
Baungtoke Village in Yedashe Township for irrigating farmland in Yedashe and Toungoo
Townships.
The main dam is 6,600 feet long and 97 feet high and embankment is
19,600 feet long and 40 feet high. Its capacity is 228,000 acre feet. On completion of the
project, water will be supplied to 35,000 acres of irrigated areas and acres of 70,000
crops. Senior General Than Shwe and party left for Toungoo at 3.40 pm after inspecting the
Swachaung Dam Project.
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo,
together with Deputy Commander of Southern Command Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni, Tactical
Operations Commander Col Htein Lin, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U
Tin Kha and officials went to Kaytumati Myothit Basic Education High School in Toungoo
Township. The Secretary-2 inspected the laboratory, computer room and classrooms and gave
instructions to Headmistress Daw Khin Zar Lwin and officials.
Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff
(Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected vegetable patches and poultry farming of the
regional battalion. Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff
(Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected raising of pigs and chickens. Chief of Bureau of
Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Director of Medical Services
Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and senior military officers met Tatmadaw members and their
families and gave instructions on agriculture, livestock and breeding, health and staff
welfare. CEC members of USDA U Aung Phone and Col Thein Nyunt met Secretary of Bago
Division USDA (East) U Saw Maw Tun and secretaries and executives of Toungoo District,
Toungoo, Kyaukkyi, Htantabin, Phyu, Yedashe and Ottwin Township USDAs at Toungoo District
USDA Office and discussed organizational matters.
Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and Director-General
of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein inspected construction
of operation theatre and delivery room at Toungoo Township Hospital. Deputy Minister
Professor Dr Kyaw Myint met Head of Township Health Department Dr J P Tranta and doctors.

development projects in Myawady, attends opening ceremony of Myawady BEHS multimedia
teaching centre
Yangon, 16 Jan - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of
Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected development projects in Myawady, Kayin State, and attended the
opening ceremony of the multimedia teaching centre of Myawady Basic Education High School
today.
Accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers,
officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads, Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt left here by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived in Mawlamyine at 8.30 am.
Accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and officials, the
Secretary-1 and party helicoptered to Thingannyinaung in Myawady where they were welcomed
by Commander of No-22 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Thura Myint Aung and officials.
They proceeded to Myawady USDA Guest House, where they were welcomed by Chairman of
Myawady District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Soe and members, Chairman of
Township Peace and Development Council Capt Ni Aung and members and district departmental
heads.
In his meeting with district and township authorities, and district
level departmental officials at the USDA Guest House, the Secretary-1 gave instructions on
development of Myawady.
First, Chairman of Myawady District Peace and Development Council
Lt-Col Kyaw Soe reported on the salient points about the district, population, education,
health, transport, agriculture and livestock breeding, land reclamation, livestock
breeding zones, forest reserve area, border trade, plans for establishment of industrial
zones, and implementation of the economic plan. Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit
Maung and Col Saw Khin Soe also presented supplementary reports. Minister for Finance and
Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Deputy Minister
for Construction U Tint Swe spoke of collection of taxes, border trade and transport in
the district. After fulfilling the requirements, the Secretary-1 said the purpose of their
tour was to inspect the development projects in Myawady, a town in Kayin State, and fulfil
the requirements in the tasks.
He spoke of the need for systematic development of border trade in
Myawady with a fair deal for both sides, and proper collection of taxes. He said the
Tatmadaw-men and departments have to be exemplary in the extensive cultivation and
livestock breeding for sufficiency of food in the township and district, and organize
people to follow suit. It is essential to give assistance to the industrialists and
entrepreneurs to establish industrial zones and manufacture industrial goods, and see to
proper development in trade and commerce and emergence of experienced national
entrepreneurs.
He urged departmental officials to strive for uplift of the living standard of local
people and organize them to work in the interest of the State with nationalism and
patriotism. The Secretary-1 and party next went to Myawady People's Hospital and inspected
the cost-sharing ward, medicine storeroom, ultra-sound and ECG room, X-ray room, other
wards and the new 16-bedded ward.
They later inspected Myawady Maternal and Child Welfare Association
Office and visited the Friendship Bridge spanning Thaungyin River. They also inspected the
land plot selected for construction of buildings for development of Myawady, and
Bayintnaung Market of Myawady Town Development Committee. They proceeded to Myawady Basic
Education High School to attend the opening ceremony of the school's multimedia teaching
centre.
They were welcomed at the school by Township Education Office U Man
Aung Pyi Soe, Headmistress Daw Tin Aye, teachers and pupils. Headmistress Daw Tin Aye and
Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Tin Maung formally opened the multimedia
teaching centre. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard of the
school's multimedia teaching centre.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went round in various sections of
the multimedia teaching centre and viewed the skill demonstration presented by the school
pupils.
After signing in the visitors' book, the Secretary-1 had a documentary
taken together with the Headmistress, teachers, members of the School Board of Trustees
and pupils. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the development services of the town. They
arrived back here this evening.

Yangon, 16 Jan- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials, arrived at Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni
Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township at 6.10 pm today. The Secretary-1 was welcomed
by Adviser at the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung, Joint-Secretary
of All- Round Construction of Mindhamma Hill Cmdr Khin Maung Oo, technicians, officials
and members of Pagoda Board of Trustees.
First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid homage to Lawka Chantha
Abhaya Labha Muni Image and inspected progress of work for the image. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt also inspected Lin-noh-taung carved by Myanmar handicraft technician U Hla Kyu
to be installed at southern stairway, construction of southern stairway, sculpture of
Buddha images and sample of slab to be placed on the pagoda platform and gave necessary
instructions. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially greeted monks and devotees at
the pagoda.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt also inspected installation of
Lin-noh-taung by Myanmar handicraft technician U Ohn Tin at northern stairway. At the
briefing hall, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Buddha images. The Secretary-1 then
arrived at worksite of Myanmar handicraft technician U Ohn Tin and inspected Buddha images
to be kept on Mindhamma Hill and samples of lion statues to be placed at archway of the
stairways. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave necessary instructions to officials
and left there.

this evening.
The delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Chairman
of CCDAC Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint

from ASEAN Tourism Ministers' meeting
Yangon, 16 Jan-A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Hotels &
Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin attended the Fourth Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers held in
Bandar Sari Begawan, Brunei, on 13 January. The meeting agreed on using ASEAN brand by the
airlines and travel agencies at ASEAN Tourism Forum-2001 as the first phase to mark the
promotion of Visit ASEAN Campaign.
As the second phase, advertising of itineraries will be promoted as
well as fora and exhibitions will be participated by all. Matters on promoting
co-operation in finding ways for travelling more easily in the ASEAN region, carrying out
the tasks according to the Hanoi Plan of Action, conducting courses on tourism, publishing
travelling guides and ASEAN Travel Services Journal and guide to ASEAN Ecotourism,
organizing meetings, workshops and seminars, investing in ASEAN travel services, and
holding of the Fifth Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers in January 2002 in Yogya-karta,
Indonesia, were jointly announced. On that evening, the Minister and party attended the

continues
Yangon, 16 Jan-The 56th Armed Forces Day Anniversary Tenth
Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition continued at the People's Square
this morning. Before the competition, the band comprising school girls of No 4 Basic
Education High School of Tamwe Township demonstrated skill singing military and marching
songs.
Then, Patron of the Organizing Committee of the Military Band
Competition Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than presented prizes to leader
of the band Ma Le Thanda Soe. Afterwards, five bands took part in competition with playing
marching songs today. Also present on the occasion were Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen

Yangon, 16 Jan-Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung and
officials inspected Heho railway station on 12 January. The minister met engineers and
station master and gave instructions on convenience of passengers and transport of

Yangon, 16 Jan-Myanmar Livestock Breeding Federation (Mandalay
Division) was formed at Mandalay City Hall-1 in Mandalay yesterday morning, attended by
Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command
Maj-Gen Ye Myint.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Livestock and
Fisheries U Aung Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan

Golf Tourney held
Yangon, 15 Jan - Under the tourism promotion programme, a golf
tournament jointly sponsored by Hotels and Tourism Service and Sun Brids Tour Agency was
held at the Danyingon golf course here this morning. Altogether 53 golfers from Germany
who arrived here on 13 January, took part in the tournament.

) Minister inspects Bicycle Plant, Candy Factory
Yangon, 16Jan-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by
Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and officials, inspected ready made Maung-Myanmar
bicycles and store for spare parts at Bicycle Plant of Myanma General and
Maintenance Industries in Sethsan Ward, Mingala Taungnyunt Township this
morning. The minister gave instructions on meeting set standard in producing
the bicycles, which are to be on sale at Winthuza Stores. Then, the minister inspected
production process of bicycles and work for extension of the plant and left instructions.
At the briefing hall of the plant, Managing Director U Thaik Tun of MGMI reported on spare
parts production and installation process to the minister, who gave instructions on
boosting production and opening the plant soon. The minister and party proceeded to Candy
Factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries in Tam we Township and inspected functions of the
mill and gave instructions to officials. Next, the minister went to Biscuit Factory, where
he inspected production process and packing of the biscuits and gave instructions.
Restoration of ancient pagodas in Bagan discussed
YANGON, 16 Jan-Minister for Culture U Win Sein and officials visited Bagan
Archaeological Museum on 15 January. The minister met the deputy director-general of
Department of Archaeology (Upper Myanmar), the director of Bagan Cultural Heritage Branch,
service personnel, engineers and experts.
The minister spoke of the need to maintain ancient pagodas in Bagan. He said the important
task of the ministry is to rebuild the pagodas according to their original style. After
the collapse of pagodas, their history disappeared due to the lack of records. Efforts are
to be made for keeping records in books, he said.He called for supervision and
preservation of ancient heritage and discussed tasks to be done.The minister fulfilled the
requirements of the service personnel.
Myanmar Medical Products and Services Directory in the offing
YANGON, 16 Jan-A directory on Myanmar medical products and services,
Myanmar Medical Products and Services Directory (MPSD), will be issued in 2001 by Golden
Myanmar Information & Advertising Ltd (Tel-297310, 252343) with the support of Myanmar
Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment Entrepreneurs Association. It is not only
meant for the medica1 trade people, the medical profession but also for the lay
people in need of help ful information for their health care and medical services.
MPSD will cover the medical trade and profession of both Yangon and Mandalay.
Medical products, medical services will be listed in a separate section. It
also includes a section on indigenous medicine. The medium of MPSD is English, but
the traditional medicine section will be in Myanmar language for easy reference by its
principal users.

YANGON, 16 Jan-A coordination meeting of the 54th Anniversary Union Day
Commemorative Exhibition Subcommittee and Information Subcommittee was held at the meeting
hall of Information and Public Relations Department on Pansodan Street this afternoon,
attended by Chairman of the committee Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein. Also
present were members of the subcommittee, officials and representatives of departments
under the ministries that will take part in the exhibition and guests.First, the deputy
minister made a speech. Director General U Chit Naing of IPRD and Director U Ko Ko Htwe
of Myanma Radio and Television reported on work and plans. Then, a general round of
discussions followed. The meeting came to an end with concluding remarks by the
chairman.
