( 1 ) Secretary-1 inspects hospitals in Taunggyi

Yangon, 1 Jan - Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, together with Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, visited Kanbawza Hospital in Taunggyi yesterday morning. On arrival at the hospital, they were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, Head of Shan State Health Department Dr Khin Aung Cho, Medical Superintendent Dr San Lwin and medical staff. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the hospital. Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Sao San Htun Hospital in Taunggyi.

They were welcomed by Medical Superintendent Dr Aye Kyi Sein, medical staff and officials. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 met with specialists, doctors and nurses of Shan State Health Department, Township Health Department, Township Maternal and Children's Hospital and Sao San Htun Hospital.

The Secretary-1 said that Sao San Htun Hospital has been provided with medical equipment and additional staff including specialists, so it will become a reliable hospital for the people. According to the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, hospitals in states and divisions have been upgraded and provided with additional staff including specialists and medical equipment to ensure that health care is equally provided for the people in states and divisions. Previously, those who suffered from serious diseases, had to go to Yangon to have medical treatment, and the cost is very high and the majority could not go there to have medical treatment.

To give treatment with the use of western medicine, requirements of hospitals have been fulfilled. Health employees as well as physicians need to carry out projects for control of malaria and AIDS by giving health education, undertaking organizational work and taking preventive measures.

Spread of AIDS can have a detrimental effect on national interests, so preventive measures are to be taken systematically and effectively. Health employees, local authorities and the people need to cooperate in taking preventive measures. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected Sao San Tun Hospital. The Secretary-1 and party then went to Mwaydaw Village in Taunggyi Township by helicopter.

At the village, the Secretary-1 and party inspected ancient stupas which are in deteriorating conditions within the precincts of Mwaydaw Kakku Pagoda and gave instructions on preservation of cultural heritage. The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Hsutaungpyi Pagoda and made donations to the fund of the pagoda.

The Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to Chairman of Shan State Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kosiya and members of the Sangha at the office of Mwaydaw Kakku Pagoda. The Chairman Sayadaw of Shan State Sangha Nayaka Committee invested the congregation with the Five Precepts.

The Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas. The Secretary-1 and party offered alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Then, merits gained for good deeds were shared. In Kakku Hall, Secretary of the pagoda board of trustees U Khun Yama reported on the brief account of the pagoda, and engineer U Hla Win on renovation of the pagoda. The Secretary-1 gave instructions. Sayadaw of Buddhist Golden Temple Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Shi Fah Zhao will donate K 40 million to the fund for renovation of Mwaydaw Kakku Pagoda, and K 10 million has been already donated.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected ancient Htidaws of the pagodas, local-made bricks, ancient bricks, ancient artistic works and bells. Then, the Secretary-1 and party went to Pintaya. The Secretary-1 and party paid homage and offered robes and alms to Presiding Sayadaw of Konlon Kyaungtaik Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhama Jotika Bhaddanta Tejaniya at Konlon Sasana Beikmandaw.

After that, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Shwe-U-min Cave in Pintaya Township, and offered lights, joss sticks and Shwethingan to Shwe-U-min Hsutaungpyi Pagoda. Next, the Secretary-1 paid homage to Buddha images in the cave and made donations to the fund of the pagoda. In the evening, the Secretary-1 and party attended the prize-presentation ceremony for State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy Golf Tournament and presented prizes to winners. This morning, the Secretary-1 and party left Taunggyi and arrived back here.

( 2 ) Secretary-1 attends prize presentation of State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy Golf Tournament

Yangon, 1 Jan- A ceremony to open the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Trophy Golf Tournament for Year 2000 was held at Ayethaya Golf Course in Taunggyi on 30 December morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, ministers, Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Golf Tournament Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and members, members of Sub-committees, deputy ministers, departmental heads, officials and golfers.

First, the Secretary-3 teed off the smoke ball to open the tournament. Chairman of the Leading Committee Minister U Aung Thaung also opened the tournament. Then, the Secretary-3, the chairman of the Leading Committee and ministers and 32 golf teams took part in the tournament. The second and final day of the tournament was held on 31 December morning. The Secretary-2, ministers and 32 golf teams took part in the tournament. The prize presentation for the tournament was held on the lawns of the golf course at 6.15 pm.

Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Aung Ko Win presented K 7.5 million for the tournament to the Secretary-1. Shan State Peace and Development Council also presented K 100,000 for the tournament. Chairman of the Leading Committee Minister U Aung Thaung spoke words of thanks.

On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, the Secretary-1 presented first, second and third prizes to respective golf teams in the handicap and scratch events. The Secretary-3, the commander and the chairman of the leading committee also presented prizes to the respective winners.

In the team handicap event, Ministry of Defence stood first with 417 strokes, Ministry of Home Affairs second with 442 and Ministry of Military Affairs third with 466. In the team scratch event, Ministry of Defence stood first with 525 strokes, Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs second with 528 and Ministry of Forestry third with 543. In the individual handicap event, Maj Ye Htut of Ministry of Defence stood first, U Pe Than of Ministry of Home Affairs second and Lt-Col Hsan Aung of Ministry of Defence third. In the individual scratch event, U Pe Than of Ministry of Home Affairs, U Thet Wai of Ministry of Energy second and Maj Ye Htut of Ministry of Defence third.

( 3 ) Taunggyi BEHS-3 gets multimedia teaching centre

Yangon, 1 Jan-A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre was held at No 3 Basic Education High School in Taunggyi, Shan State, on 31 December morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, arrived at BEHS No 3, Taunggyi. They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, members of State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, State, District and Township Education Officers, school heads, teachers and students.

Headmistress Daw Sao Nu Kyi and Secretary of School Board of Trustees Daw Mi Mi Chan formally opened the centre. The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the centre.

The Secretary-1 inspected audio room (language lab), domestic science room, audio-visual room, computer aided instruction room, art and painting room, printed media room, computer skills room and music room and observed skill demonstration of the students.

 

Headmistress Daw Sao Nu Kyi reported on opening of the centre. Secretary of the School Board of Trustees Daw Mi Mi Chan reported on efforts for opening of the centre. Wellwishers Kanbawza Bank Ltd Chairman U Aung Ko Win and Vice-Chairman Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Agga Maha Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Daw Nang Than Htwe presented K 3 million, Thudhamma Manijotadhara U Thein Tin-Thudhamma Theingi Daw Khin Thein (Shwekyabyan Ma Shwewar cheroot industry) K 517,750 and Thudhamma Manijotadhara U Tun Khin-Daw Khin Khin Su (Padamya cheroot industry) K 400,000. The Secretary-1 accepted the donations. Seven wellwishers presented K 300,000 each to Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo. The Secretary-1 presented tapes to Headmistress Daw Sao Nu Kyi.

The Secretary-1 expressed thanks for local authorities, School Board of Trustees, wellwishers and old students who provided assistance for opening of the centre.

He said the government has been implementing education promotion programmes with the aim of narrowing education gap between urban and rural areas, turning out brilliant and outstanding students and uplifting of education of international standard. The education promotion programmes were launched nationwide in a short time with the participation of the people and wellwishers, he said. Wellwishers realized that the programmes aimed at turning out brilliant students and Luyechuns who served the interest of the nation. Therefore they have actively participated in the programmes and accomplishments have been made, he added.

The Secretary-1 urged the students to try hard to possess dynamic qualification with the use of modern equipment and the teachers to systematically nurture their pupils. The Secretary-1 and party had photo taken together with teachers, members of the School Board of Trustees and students. The Secretary-1 and party attended the opening ceremony of School Family Day of Shan State (South) at BEHS No 4 in Taunggyi. The Secretary-1 and party watched dance show of students and inspected booths at the School Family Day. Over 15,000 students will participate in the sports events and festivities School Family Day which continues till 5 January.

Secretary-1 views booths of School Family Day Celebration for 2000-2001 academic year

Yangon, 1 Jan- Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt viewed booths of School Family Day celebration for 2000-2001 academic year at Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this afternoon. At 2.25 pm, the Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee the Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Diamond Jubilee Hall where they were welcomed by Minister for Education U Than Aung, the deputy ministers, directors-general and officials.

Then, the Secretary-1 viewed handicraft booths of No 1 and No 2 Basic Education Departments of the Ministry of Education on the first floor. The Secretary-1 also viewed the art gallery of No 1 BED and prize-winning works of the School Family Day for 2000-2001.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 inspected the booth of Universities' Historical Research Department, the booth of SEAMEO Regional Centre for History and Tradition and the booth of Special Four-Year Plan for the Promotion of National Education. On the second floor, the Secretary-1 attended the drawing demonstration of postcard painting by basic education students. The students presented their works to the Secretary-1. Then, the Secretary-1 left there at 3 pm.

( 4 ) 140th founding anniversary and opening of new office of Hokkyant Chinese Buddhist Association of Myanmar held

Yangon, 1 Jan- The 140th founding anniversary of Hokkyant Chinese Buddhist Association in Myanmar was observed in conjunction with the opening of the office of the association at 110, Sinh O Dan Street in Latha Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, the Chinese Ambassador and staff of the Chinese Embassy, the chairman of the association, members and guests.

Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong, Chairman of the association U Kyin Pein and Mr Lim Hin Xin formally opened the new office of the association. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 unveiled the signboard of the association. Then, a ceremony to mark the opening of the association was held on the first floor of the office. Chairman U Kyin Pein extended greetings. On behalf of the association, Chairman U Kyin Pein and Vice-Chairman U Shwe presented K 1 million for public welfare tasks of Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise to Director of Resettlement Brig-Gen Aung Thein.

Next, officials presented gifts in commemoration of the office opening and 140th founding anniversary of the association to the Secretary-2. Ambassador Mr Liang Dong presented the flower basket in commemoration of the opening of new office of the association to officials. Later, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin explained religious affairs.

Statue and throne of 12th Shwekyin Sasanabaing Shwehintha Tawya Sayadawgyi open

Yangon, 1 Jan- A ceremony to open the statue and throne of 12th Shwekyin Sasanabaing Shwehintha Sayadawgyi donated by Tatmadawmen of (Army, Navy and Air) was held at Sagaing Shwehintha Sankyaung on Thukhawady Road in Ward 6 of Yankin Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers and departmental heads. First, the opening of the statue and throne of 12th Shwekyin Sasanabaing Shwehintha Tawya Sayadawgyi was held in front of Maha Wizaya Ordination Hall of the Sankyaung.

The Secretary-2 formally unveiled the statue and throne of 12th Shwekyin Sasanabaing Agga Maha Pandita Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika State Ovadanariya Shwekyin Nikaya Chairman Shwehintha Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panditasiri. Then, the Secretary-2 and party paid reverence to the statue.

Presiding Nayaka of Sagaing Shwehintha Taikthit Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasiri read out the Pujaniya Ranana Gatha. Supervisor Sayadaw of Sagaing Shwehintha Taikthit Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vinayaka administered the Five Precepts. Then, members of the Sangha recited the metta sutta. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party offered provisions to Sayadaws. Later, Sagaing Shwehintha Sankyaung Sayadaw Bhadadanta Okkansa delivered a sermon and the Secretary-2 and party then shared merits gained.

Yangon, 1 Jan-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met staff of Myanma Radio and Television at Studio A this morning. The minister gave instructions on speeding up their work with added momentum. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay, directors, engineers, officials and service personnel.

Yangon, 1 Jan- The prize presentation ceremony for the Ninth Mayor's Trophy Horticultural Show marking the 53rd Anniversary of Independence Day was held at Mindhamma Sports (Ground at the corner of Mindhamma and Tawwin Roads in Mayangon Township this afternoon, attended by Patrons of Myanmar Flouriculturists Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe wife of Secretary-l of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Daw Khin Cho Oo, wife of Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Also present were Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Secretary Col Myint Aung,  Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win and ; members, wives of ministers, officials and prize winners.

Patron Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented first, second and third prizes to Daw San San Kyi, Daw Hse Nebalu and Ma Sabei  in the floriculture event respectively. Patron Daw Khin Than Nwe presented first, second and third prizes to Maj Byat, Daw L Hsai Toung and Lt Col Yin Maung in the flowering plants event respectively.

Patron Daw Khin Cho Oo presented first, second and third prizes to Ko Tin Nu, U Htwe Maung and Ko Tin Nu in the orchid event respectively. Then, wives of the commander of Yangon Command and ministers and officials also presented prizes to respective winners. The Horticultural Show opens up to 15 February 20001.Admission is free.

Books on Pitaka treatise donated to ITBMU

Yangon, 1 Jan-A ceremony to donate 55 books on Pitaka treatise and a cupboard worth K 108,208 was held at the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University of Ministry of Religious Affairs at 10 am yesterday.

The donation was made by the proprietors of Mya Myint Mo Co U Ko Gyi and wife Daw Khin Moh Moh to mark the 17th birthday of their son Maung Aung Mo Maung. Pro-Rector (Administration) Dr Hla Pe accepted the donations and presented a certificate of honour to the wellwishers.

Members of the Sangha, nuns and lay persons from 17 countries are studying Buddhist literature at the university, and books on religion, history and philosophy in English or in Myanmar, desks, cupboards as well as bookshelves for the students are needed. Minister inspects Monywa Industrial Zone

Yangon, 1 Jan-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe accompanied by Deputy Minister for North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Secretary of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Htut and officials today arrived at Chindwin Star Motor Workshop where he inspected production of CGA-7 and M-38 jeeps and attended to the needs. Afterwards the minister met with private industrial entrepreneurs and fulfilled their needs. Then, he inspected spare parts for agricultural machinery made by private entrepreneurs and attended to the needs. Later, he met departmental employees under the ministry at the office of Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems.

( 7 ) e-Education set into motion in Myanmar

Yangon 1 Jan-Education programmes which pro,vide the people with the opportunity to pursue education, started at 7 am today with the message sent by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe in honour of the day on which e-Education was introduced in the Union of Myanmar. The e-Education programmes were launched with the use of Electronic Data Broadcasting System by the broadcasting main station of Myanmar Education Research Bureau via satellite.

Programmes on various subjects were broadcast till 3.30 pm.It is learnt that if students are not free, they can study later by retrieving education programmes from servers kept at the learning centres. It is also learnt that education programmes can be broadcast by professors themselves directly from the studio rooms and with the use of recorded tapes. Students are studying their lessons through education programmes at Yangon University of Distance Education, Yangon Institute of Education, Basic Education High School No 1 in Thingangyun, Diamond Jubilee Hall and New Century Resource Centre in Botahtaung Township.

Minister participates in paper-reading session of School Family Day

YANGON, 1 Jan-The paper-reading sessions of School Family Day for 2000-2001 academic year continued for the third and final day at the Recreation Centre of Yangon University, the Convocation Hall and the hall of Physics Department in Kamayut Township today.

Resource Persons submitted 27 papers to the session. Minister for Education U Than Aung arrived at the paper-reading session being held at the Convocation Hall where he was welcomed by Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt, Director-General U Saw l.win of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) Director-General U Bo Win of Education Planning and Training Department, Chairman of Myanmar Education Research Bureau U Myint Han, Deputy Director-General U Tin Win of No 3 Basic Education Department and officials. Then, the minister took part in the paper-reading session.

 

School Family Day (Upper Myanmar) held in Mandalay

Yangon, 1 Jan- The marching demonstration of outstanding students for 2000-2001 academic year School Family Day (Upper Myanmar) of No 2 Basic Education Department (head office) was held at Aungmye Mandalar Sports Ground in Mandalay yesterday morning, attended by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister for Education U Than Aung.

Also present were Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi, Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn and members, Director-General Lt-Col Win Htein of No 2 BED, Director-General Dr Thein Myint of Higher Education Department (Upper Myanmar), rectors, professors  of universities, members of Panel of Patrons of Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Secretary of Mandalay Division Union Solidarity and Development Association U Tin Maung Oo, officials, school heads, teachers, outstanding students and people totalling over 3,500. Outstanding Nine Standard Student Ma May Thu Aung of No 8 Basic Education High School of Aungmyethazan reported matters related to the marching demonstration. Students of BEHS No 16 participated in the marching demonstration and presented pom pom dance, songs, martial arts and power aerobic in accompaniment of the band of BEHS No 13.

( 8 ) Entries invited for ASEAN photo competition

YANGON, 1 Jan - ASEAN photo competition will be held nation-wise with the aim of arousing the interest of peoples of member nations in the goal and working programmes of the association.

The competition will cover four titles: A Concert of Southeast Asian Nations, A Partnership in Dynamic Development, A Community of Caring Societies and An Outward Looking ASEAN.

Any Myanmar citizen may take,part in the competition. The entries are to be colour photos, 8 inches by 12 inches and are to be taken in the country. The entries which have won prizes in other competitions, will not be taken into consideration.

The entries are to be sent together with negative films. An entrant can send four photos for one title and 16 for four titles.

The theme of the entries, where and when they are taken, the name, national registration number and address of the entrant are to be described. Five prizes will be presented for each title, and 20 prizes for four titles. The winner will accept 500 FECs for each prize. The 20 selected photos will also be sent to the ASEAN Culture and Information Committee. The selected will be awarded 1,000 FECs.

The entries are to be sent to U Than Tun, acting Director of the Information and Public Relations Department, 22-24, Pansodan Street, Yangon, not later than 4 pm, 28 February, 2001.

Yangon, 1 Jan-ViceChairman U Aik Tun of Asia Wealth Bank Ltd donated K 500,000 to the fund  for extension of Mogok Mandalay Road, through Tactical Operations Commander Col Thein Hlaing and K 500,000 for multimedia classrooms to Township Education Officer U Aung Myint at Maniyadana Hall in Mogok on 30 December.

The donation was made at the first founding anniversary of the Mogok branch of AWB. Also present on the occasion were the staff of the AWB branch, townselders and guests.

( 9 ) Pre-Conference of War Veterans Organization (Sagaing Division) held

Yangon, 1 Jan-The Pre-conference of War Veterans Organization (Sagaing Division) was held at the Zeyathiri Hall of North-West Command in Monywa this morning, attended by Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win. Also present were members of MWVO Central Organizing Committee Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin of Rail Transportation, Director-General Col Nyan Tun Aung of Transport Planning Department, Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint of Inland Water Transport, high-ranking officers of North-West Command, members of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council, members of Sagaing Division Supervisory Committee of WVO and officials of various associations, delegates and guests.

Lt-Col Soe Myint (Retd) presided over the Pre-Conference and Lt-Col Myint Toe (Retd)   and Maj Than Myint were co-chairmen. Daw Maw Maw Aung acted as master of ceremonies and Daw Thida Aung as joint master of ceremonies. Altogether 383 delegates out of 393 or 98.46 per cent attended the conference. Members of Organizing Committee of Sagaing Division Maj Thant Zin Oo (Retd), Capt Nyunt Lwin (Retd) and Cap Myo Win Latt (Retd) presented reports on three sectors of Sagaing Division WVO to the Pre-conference.

Afterwards, Maj Soe Myint (Retd) discussed the national political sector, Maj Aye Kyaw Lwin (Retd) the national defence and security sector, Maj Tin Yu (Retd) the economic sector, Maj Kyaw Tha Tun (Retd) social affairs and welfare sector and Maj Aung Min (Retd) the community sector. Next, the pre-conference adopted seven future tasks and one resolution, one approval and put two matters on record. Lt-Col Soe Myint (Retd) gave a concluding remarks and the Pre-conference successfully ended with chanting the slogans in the afternoon.

Then, the donation ceremony was held. Todays donations included K 1 million by MWVO Central Organizing Committee, K 380,000 by organizing Group-3, K 400,000 by Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council, K 420,000 by district and township Peace and Development Councils, 300,000 by division level departments, K 100,000 by Division Union Solidarity and Development Association, K 100,000 by Shwenagamin Co, 30,000 by Htanaung Yeik family, 200,000 by Capt Aung Tha Htay (Retd), K 50,000 each by all private bus lines, all water craft lines and Inland Water Transport, K100,000 by whole salers and Monywa Industrial Zone.

16 Ngaphe Township NLD members resign of own accord

Yangon, 1 Jan-Sixteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngaphe Township, Magway Division. Sixteen members of Ngaphe Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngaphe Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 29 March 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
