(1) Secretary-1 inspects regional development in Kayah State, Shwepyi Aye Camp development in Shan StateYANGON, 30 Dec-Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Colonel General Staff (Air), officials at the
Office of the State Peace and Development Council and departmental heads, yesterday arrived at Loikaw Airport in Kayah State at 2.50 p.m.The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing, military and civil officials and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo and Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing, inspected regional development and construction works in Loikaw and its surrounding areas and gave necessary instructions.
The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Shwepyi Aye Camp in Phekhon Township, Shan State, by helicopter and were welcomed there by Brig-Gen Thura Sein Thaung of Phekhon Station, military and civil officials, members of MTA led by U Khun Mein who returned to the legal fold, local people and members of national cultural troupe. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met with departmental personnel of Phekhon Township, families of MTA members led by U Khun Mein at the hall of the camp and fulfilled the requirements on development of Shwepyi Aye Youth Rehabilitation Centre and agriculture, livestock breeding, education and health for MTA family members.
Brig-Gen Thura Sein Thaung reported on conditions of youth rehabilitation at the camp and work being carried out for agriculture, livestock breeding, education and health. Afterwards, officials of the camp reported on work being done department-wise at the camp. The commander, the ministers and the deputy ministers gave supplementary reports. U Khun Mein of MTA reported on development of Shwepyi Aye Youth Rehabilitation Centre and the village in Phekhon Township owing to the assistance provided by the State. The Secretary-1 said that the purpose of their visit to the region was to fulfil requirements for the further development of Shwepyi Aye Camp and Shwepyi Aye Village.
The camp and village have been established with two aims: to rehabilitate youths addicted to drugs and integrate them into the community and to resettle MTA members and their families who entered the legal fold, fulfil their basic needs and improve their standard of living. According to the reports of local authorities, members of Shwepyi Aye Camp Supervisory Committee and MTA members and the perceptible condition, the camp and village have made a lot of progress ever than before. It has been thank
to concerted efforts of the local authorities and departmental personnel. Priority is to be given to the tasks designed to ensure the spiritual development of the youths, to enable them to acquire vocational education and to integrate them into the community and to make best use of their service in the interests of the nation.Measures are to be taken for the development of agriculture and livestock breeding to enable village families to make their living without difficulty and to improve their standard of living. It is learnt that in this region, the growing of buck- wheat is successful; in the northern Shan State, success has been achieved in growing the crop; arrangements are being made to extend the cultivation of buck wheat; buck wheat grown in Myanmar in popular among buyers; as there are markets for buck wheat, measures are to be taken to cultivate buck wheat in other regions; priority is also to be given to cultivation of other crops suitable to the region other as opium substitute crops. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged departmental
officials to discharge their duties in earnest and MTA members to strive for the regional development and improvement of their standard of living. Next, the Secretary-1 presented gifts to U Khun Mein and members and their families.Later, the Secretary-1 also presented gifts to service personnel in the execution in the camp. The Secretary-1 and party inspected thriving buckwheat plantations at the camp. The Secretary-1 also
inspected vocational training's to the youth at the camp where Camp Manager U Chun Haye conducted the Secretary-1 and party round it. Then, the Secretary-1 and party inspected Youth Rehabilitation
Hospital where Dr An Htru Moe reported on health care services. The Secretary-1 and party left the camp by helicopter and arrived at Taunggyi at 6 p.m. They were welcomed there by members of
state/district/township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel and USDA members.The Secretary-1 and party stopped over the night in Taunggyi.
(2) Secretary-2 attends opening ceremony of Flower Fair 2000
YANGON, 30 Dec - The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation today opened the Flower Fair 2000 ushering in AD 2001 at Mingaladon Orchid Garden on Khayaybin Road in Mingaladon Township, Yangon North District. The opening ceremony was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, the ministers, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, the deputy ministers, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic
to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham and other diplomats, officials and personnel of Myanma Agriculture Service, among others.Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin made a speech. He said that according to Myanmar's geographical conditions, agriculture is the mainstay of the national economy, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is striving constantly for expansion of cultivation of various crops and produce quality products. He said the ministry is striving not only for boosting production of staple crop paddy and export crops, beans and industrial crops, and sufficiency of edible oil but also for production of quality kitchen item crops.
The ministry, he said, is also trying to boost production of kitchen item crops and flowers from self-help scale to commercial scale. Local and foreign quality flower strains fetch good prices at the local market and they can also be exported. The ministry frequently organizes agricultural technology exhibitions, demonstrations and nursery markets, and the Flower Fair that opened today was meant for flower lovers and those who like growing flowers.
The minister spoke of the use of flowers at various social occasions with the improvement of the social standard, and noted that the Flower Fair organizes quality strain flowers and various kinds of flowers grown in different soils and weather conditions. The fair is also aimed at preserving rare flower and orchid strains of the plains and hill regions, enabling people to grow foreign flower strains by means of tissue culture and buy seeds at any time they want to grow them.
The fair, he said, opens 13 booths where visitors, agriculturists, horticulturists and flower lovers can study scientific methods of growing flowers. Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than formally opened the Flower Fair. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party observed the booths of the fair. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and wife Daw Khin Myo Oo, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung' wife Daw Aye Aye Cho, and Mayor U Ko Lay'' wife Daw Khin Khin presented prizes to the winners in the

(3) Provisions donated to Yangon Division Abbot Training School, monasteries
YANGON, 30 Dec- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and wellwishers donated provisions to Yangon Division Abbot Training School in Mayangon Township this morning, and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony.
Also present on the occasion were Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, district and township authorities, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association and wellwishers. The congregation took the Five Precepts from Principal of the school Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kovida.
Then, Secretary-2 Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo offered provisions to the Sayadaw. Similarly, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein and wellwishers donated offertories to members of the Sangha.
Afterwards, Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein and Officiating Colonel Air Staff (Mechanical) Lt-Col Ye Chit Pe presented rice donated by Tatmadaw families, to the Sayadaw. The wellwishers offered provisions for the school to the Sayadaw.
Director of Resettlement Brig-Gen Aung Thein supplicated on the purpose of the donation. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kovida delivered a sermon, followed by the sharing of merits. Similarly, the Tatmadaw
families donated provisions to Phetpinaing, Aungyamye, Byamawihara, Pariyatti Myintzu, Ledi Vipassana, Arthawka Thidagu, Gangawmyaing and Thaddhamma monasteries in Thingangyun Township this morning. Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein and
Officiating Colonel Air Staff (Mechanical) Lt-Col Ye Chit Pe offered rice donated by families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air), to Presiding Nayaka of Thaddhamma Mandaing Monastery Bhaddanta Nagasena. The wellwishers donated provisions to Presiding Nayaka Sayadaws and K 365,000 towards the
funds of monasteries.![]()
(4) 53rd Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Selection Examination opened
YANGON, 30 Dec - The opening ceremony of the 53rd Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Selection Examination was held at Wijaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin on Kaba Aye Hill this morning. It was attended by Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhama Jotika Sayadaw of in Myingyan Koehsaung Kyaungtaik Bhaddanta Sobhita, member Sayadaws, Chairman of Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Selection Committee Sayadaw of Webyan Kyaungtaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Vijayabhivamsa and member Sayadaws, members of the Sangha who will take the examination, member of the State Peace and Development Council
Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung, Director-General of the Department for the Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Director-General of the Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Secretary of Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, district and township authorities, officials of the Religious Affairs Department, the Department for the Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and religious and social organizations and wellwishers.Staff Officer of the Religious Affairs Department U Tun Naing acted as master of ceremonies. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vijayabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts, and the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas. Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhama Jotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara read Ovadakatha of Chairman Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita. In the Ovadakatha, the Sayadaw urged those present at the ceremony to bear in mind every day the teachings expounded by the Buddha and to earnestly carry out matters related to promotion of the Sasana.
The Sayadaw also exhorted members of the Sangha to take the examination with five strengths: faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration and wisdom. The Sayadaw then called on the government and the people to perform meritorious deeds while promoting the Sasana.
Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than supplicated on religious affairs. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than expressed his great pleasure for having an opportunity to pay respects to the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaws, Tipitaka Ovadacariya Sayadaws, examiner Sayadaws and members of
the Sangha who will take the examination, at the opening of the 53rd Tipitakadhara Selection Examination under the aegis of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.He said the candidates have to sit for oral and written Tipitakadhara Examination that safeguards the Sasana. There are 116 members of the Sangha who passed oral and written Pitaka and Nikaya
examinations and there are altogether 560 members of the Sangha who passed these examinations orally, he said. He said Myanmar culture has developed based on the teachings of the Buddha. The State Peace and Development Council government has been providing assistance for purification and propagation of
the Sasana by donating provisions, presenting religious titles, holding examinations on Pariyatti, building religious structures and renovating them, he said.Afterwards, Minister U Aung Khin supplicated on religious affairs. Minister U Aung Khin said there are three kinds of Sasana. Among them Pariyatti Sasana is the basis. Three Pitakats has been flourished over 2,500 years with the missionary ability of the members of the Sangha, he said. The minister quoted the
Sayadaws as saying that the Sasana will continue to flourish by giving lectures to younger generations of the members of the Sangha.There are many Sarthintaiks in both urban and rural areas besides the State Pariyatti Sasana University and Pariyatti examinations organized by the members of the Sangha are held in regions. Eight
Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaws and two Tipitakadhara Sayadaws have emerged since 1948, he added. Then, the ceremony came to a close.![]()
(5) 5,460 FECs for members of Sangha studying at universities in India
YANGON, 30 Dec-A ceremony to present FECs for 82 members of the Sangha studying at seven universities in India was held at the office of the Minister for Religious Affairs this morning. Altogether 23 Bodha Gaya pilgrims presented 5,460 FECs to Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko. Today's donations included 2,000 FEC by owner of Sein & San Co Ltd U Sein Hla Win-Daw Phyu Phyu Khin, 1,000 FEC by owner of Ever Smile Worldz Co Ltd U Thet Naing-Daw Nyunt Nyunt, 500 FEC by U Maung Maung Kywe-Daw Molly Tin of Shwe Mintahmee Computer, 250

(6) School Family Day continues at Diamond Jubilee HallYANGON, 30 Dec- The School Family Day for the 2000-2001 academic year continued at Diamond Jubilee Hall in Kamayut Township today. Students and parents visited the School Family Day exhibitions.
At the book exhibition, Yangon University, the University of Distance Education, Eastern Yangon University, the Institute of Economics, the Institute of Education (Yangon), the University of Foreign Languages and private publishing houses displayed and sold various kinds of books on the ground floor.
On the first floor, domestic science booths of Nos 1, 2 and 3 Basic Education Departments, the gallery of artists and No 1 BED, booths of the four-year national education promotion plan, Universities' Historical Research Department and SEAMEO Regional Centre for History and Tradition were opened. On the
second floor, the Bagan arts booth, booths of companies, e-Education in Myanmar 2001, Data Broadcasting System and Multimedia booths were also included in the exhibition. In the afternoon, the music and variety dances of the School Family Day continued at the National Theatre.![]()

(7) Educative lecture on health given in Danubyu
YANGON, 30 Dec-An educative lecture on health, organized by Myanmar Medical Association (Yangon) women chapter, was given at Teza Hall of Basic Education High School in Danubyu this morning. Present on the occasion were Leading Patron of MMA (Yangon) women chapter Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar
Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Chairperson of Ayeyawady Division MCWA, wife of Commander of South-West Command Daw Khin Lay Thet, local authorities, doctors from Maubin Township and Danubyu Township, members of MMCWA, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of Red Cross Society, members of Committee for Women's Affairs and students. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party visited the member specialists of the Association
who were giving treatment to the patients at Danubyu People's Hospital. The specialists gave treatment to 742 patients and medicines worth over K 100,000 and glasses. K 55,000 were donated to the pre-primary school of Danubyu Township MCWA. Then, they visited Man Aung Myin Buddha Image in Zalun and

(8) Charity fair, fun fair held at Jivitadana Sangha Hospital
YANGON, 30 Dec-A ceremony to open 11th charity fair and fun fair of Jivitadana Sangha Hospital was held on precincts of the hospital, Koemin Koechin Road, Bahan Township, here, this morning.
Then, Chairman of the Hospital Management Board U Maung Maung-7 extended greetings. Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and Chairman U Maung Maung-7 formally opened the fair and viewed round the fairs. There 28 food-stalls and cold drinks shops and fun fair shops were opened, and the proceeds of today's sales will go to the hospital.
(9) 30 KhinU Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 30 Dec-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of KhinU Township, Sagaing Division. Thirty members of KhinU Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to KhinU Township Multiparty Democracy General Election
Sub-commission and the party concerned on 24 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
