(1) Monks and Buddhist devotees crowd Mindhamma Hill

YANGON 29 Dec - Monks and devotees paid homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township today.

Engineers and workers of Public Works carried out construction works such as building of Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi, the southern and northern stairways and the retaining wall. Stone sculptor U Taw Taw
and sons and party were carving the Image from 7 am till night. Myanmar handicraft technician U Ohn Tin and party were also sculpturing Buddha images to be kept at Mindhamma Hill. Wut associations are reciting religious verses from 7 am to 10 p.m. daily. Book shops of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Information were open at the hill. Donations received from 5 August to date amounted to K 118,527,447.


(2) Secretary-1 attends celebration of School Family Day

YANGON 29 Dec - A ceremony to observe the School Family Day for the 2000-2001 academic year was held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, member of the State Peace and
Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads of department, diplomats of foreign embassies, resident representatives of UN agencies, members of the Leading Committee for Observance of Education Family Day and the work committee, directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, rectors and principals of universities and colleges, township education officers from Yangon Division,
members of school boards of trustees, parents, teachers and pupils.

Fourteen pupils representing states and divisions formally opened the ceremony, and the pupils released gas balloons. Then, two pupils sang Mingala Auwba Yodaya song to the accompaniment of Pho Thingyan
Myanmar traditional orchestra. Afterwards, the girls from No 4 Basic Education High School in Hlaing Township performed a Gabyalut dance. Band troupes, pompom troupes, Myanma martial arts troupes,
aerobic troupes and multi-coloured flag-bearing troupes comprising pupils from basic education high schools demonstrated their skills.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party and the guests viewed booths opened by No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon), No 2 Basic Education Department, No 1 Basic Education Department
and Myanma Artistes and Artisan Asiayon, the booth exhibiting the four-year national education promotion special programme, art booths and e-education booths. The booths of School Family Day will
be open to the public from 29 December 2000 up to 5 January 2001, and admission is free.


New Century Resource Centre, Resource Centre for Ancient Myanmar Manuscripts open to build learning society, face challenges of knowledge age

YANGON 29 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended opening ceremonies of New Century Resource Centre and Resource Centre for Ancient Myanmar Manuscripts of Higher Education Department, the Ministry of Education, today.

NCRC was opened on Botahtaung Pagoda Road, Botahtaung Township at 10.30 am today. Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, the Attorney-General, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, directors-general and chairmen of
departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, rectors, principals, students and others. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt said the four-year special national education programme is being implemented with the aim of achieving highly-qualified human resource development and regional human resource development which are required in building a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Creation of a learning society and implementation of a plan to face the challenges of the knowledge age are included in the special national education programme. The opening of NCRC and RCAMM is
included in the plan to build a learning society and to face the challenges of the knowledge age. A new system called e-Education, which is a combination of information and communication technology and electronic technology in imparting education has been installed at the centres. National Human Resources Development Division will conduct proficiency courses with the application of e-Education technology; the division, in cooperation with other organizations, is opening a computer science course and other courses as well. Arrangements are under way to pave the way for everyone to seek knowledge by using e-Education Learning Centre, e-Education Resource Centre, Computer Training Centre and Language
Laboratory.

The e-Education Learning Centre is linked with the electronic data broadcasting system. Plans have been made to hold consultations, training courses, seminars, talks and conferences occasionally in order to enable those who are desirous of learning education to study in a single place. Concerning RCAMM, the deputy minister said that today, due to advances in technology, globalization process has become influential. One of the ill effects is the danger of the loss of national identity.

The aims of the RCAMM are to preserve Myanmar traditions and culture, to organize the people to preserve them, to education the people to know the Myanmar's education developments throughout
history, to enable the public to study ancient manuscripts and to gather and preserve the nation's ancient manuscripts in a single place. A library was opened in enabling the public to study multiple subjects in a single place. The international-level computerized electronic catalogue system is available at the library. Opening of NCRC and RCAMM is for emergence of a learning society in Myanmar and to enabling Myanmars to face the challenges of the 21st Century without losing their national identify.

The Secretary-1 then formally opened the NCRC. Later, he visited the booths of Winner Computer Group, World Peace and International CE Technology and May Kha Group which are cooperating with
NCRC. He inspected display of computers and electronic equipment and their functions at the booths. Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony to open RCAMM . Minister for
Education U Than Aung formally opened the centre. On the ground floor, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the reading corner where periodicals published within a period from 1872 to 1948 and reference
section.

They also visited display room, multimedia room, manuscript room, stone inscriptions room, general reading room and reference section on the first floor. The centres open to public daily during office hours
except Mondays. During the test period which is from 29 December to 14 January 2001, students and the public are permitted to use the language lab, e-education resource centre, computer learning centre and e-education learning centre of NCRC. NCRC will also open diploma courses on software, hardware and network sciences.


(3) Secretary-2 views Traditional Medical Exhibition

YANGON 29 Dec- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, inspected Traditional
Medicine and Medical Equipment Exhibition of Traditional Medicine Department, the Ministry of Health, at Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road this afternoon. On arrival at the exhibition, the
Secretary-2 and party were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo, Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun and departmental heads,
senior practitioners, traditional medicine producers and officials.

The Secretary-2 then inspected the booths of Department of Traditional Medicine, private traditional medicine producers and private raw materials producers, and cordially greeted traditional medicine producers and their families. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party had a documentary photo taken together with traditional medicine producers and left there at 2.45 p.m.


(4) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Thailand

YANGON 29 Dec- On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak, who had
completed his tour of duty, at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today. Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

Commerce Minister meets foreign guests

YANGON 29 Dec- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Managing Director Mr Christophe Felix of Europ Continents Co Ltd of Switzerland and party at his office this morning. Also present at the
call were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Director-General of the Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye, Director-General of Border Trade Department Col Nay Win, Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials.

U Hla Than appointed Ambassador to Singapore

YANGON 30 Dec- The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Hla Than as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Singapore.


(5) Htantabin Township to put 52,000 acres under summer paddy

YANGON 29 Dec- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected agriculture and regional development tasks in Htantabin Township, Yangon North District, this afternoon.

Accompanied by officials, the Commander met with township level departmental personnel and farmers of Tetthit, Ahsugyi, Hngetthaik, Payut, Khantayaw, Yeso, MashweU, Katut and Pandaing Villages at
Ahsugyi Agriculture Education Camp in Htantabin Township. Speaking on the occasion, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said that over 140 drains have already been dug for summer paddy
cultivation in Tetthit Kyun region in the township. It is needed to cultivate summer paddy and cold season crops such as beans and pulses and edible oil crops in the areas where water is available. It is required to cultivate summer paddy and beans and pulses not later than 15 January. Fuel will be provided to cultivate summer paddy in time. All available land on both sides of Yangon-Nyaungdon Highway in the township will be put under the crop.

Timely cultivation of paddy will minimize crop loss. Then, Chairman of Htantabin Township Peace and Development Council U Thaung Han reported on preparations being made for agriculture and regional
development in Htantabin Township and township level officials on requirements for summer paddy cultivation. Afterwards, local farmers reported on fuel and fertilizer requirement for summer paddy
cultivation. The commander attended to their needs. Next, the commander inspected cultivation of summer paddy on both sides of Yangon-Nyaungdon Highway and left instructions to officials.

Altogether 25,035 acres of summer paddy, 5,535 acres of pulses and beans and 2,617 acres of edible oil crops have been cultivated against the target of 52,000, 10,000 and 4,200 acres respectively.


(6) Greening work of Mandalay International Airport coordinated

YANGON 29 Dec- A coordination meeting on greening work phase-1 of Mandalay International Airport was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Transport yesterday afternoon, attended by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.

Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director-General U Win Maung of Department of Civil Aviation and officials, the directors-general of Forest Department and Public Works and U Khin Shwe and officials of Zaykaba Co Ltd. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said greening work phase-1 of Mandalay International Airport (See page 6) is to be implemented by coming April in accord with the guidance of the Head of State. Department of Civil Aviation is to discharge duty in collaboration with other departments. Then, officials reported on work. Deputy minister attended to the needs.

Nuts fixed to last beam of Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk)

YANGON 29 Dec- A ceremony to fix the golden nuts to the last beam of Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk) was held at the pandal near the bridge this morning.

Present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for
Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Brig-Gen Than Tun of Kyaukpadaung Station, officials of the Public Works, local authorities, local people, members of Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross, Auxiliary Fire Brigades and Union Solidarity and Development Association, teachers and students.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun said the golden nuts were fixed to the last beam of Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk) and other steel beams of the bridge as well; it is the last phase for the construction of the bridge; the 5,192-foot-long bridge, linking Chauk and Seikphyu across Ayeyawady River, was built of steel beams; construction of the bridge started in October 1994; after the site chosen for construction of the bridge by officials of the Ministry of Construction and Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems, had been studied several times, the Ministry of Construction approved it.

The bridge was built of concrete cornerstone and piers; the main bridge was also built of steel frames; the bridge has two-lane 28 feet wide motorway with a width of six feet pedestrian and with a clearance of 57 feet and it can withstand 60-ton loads. On completion of the bridge, people from Magway Division will be easy access to other divisions and states in a short time; not only commercial sector but also economic and social affairs of States and Divisions in the western and eastern banks of Ayeyawady River will be made
progress and local people was urged to cooperate with engineers and employees of Public Works in construction work. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Brig-Gen Thein
Zaw and Brig-Gen Than Tun took positions at the place for fixing the golden nuts. At 9.18 am, they simultaneously fixed golden nuts at the last frame. Then, they scattered golden and silver showers to mark
the successful completion of the golden nuts fixing.

Japanese, Myanmar wellwishers donate equipment to Institute of Dental Medicine

 YANGON 29 Dec- Dean of Tokyo Medical and Dental University Professor Kazuhiro Eto and dental surgeon Dr Iwao Yamada of Tokyo, donated 22 dental chairs and clinical equipment worth K 40 million and a water purifier, a compressor, an air-conditioner and clinical equipment worth K 10 million respectively to Institute of Dental Medicine (Yangon), Ministry of Health, at the hall of the institute this afternoon. Similarly, Managing Director U Myo Thein of Lion Myanmar Co Ltd and wife Daw Khin Soe Yi donated an autohumalizer worth US$ 30,000 to Ministry of Health at the same venue. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein accepted documents related to the equipment and presented certificates of honour and gifts to the wellwishers. Also present were Deputy Directors-General of the ministry, rectors, directors, professors, lecturers and guests.


(7) Yangon Mayor attends merit-sharing ceremony for building of Tawlati Monastery in Taikkyi

YANGON 29 Dec- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay attended the merit-sharing ceremony for the building of Tawlati Monastery constructed by the staff of YCDC, at Tawlati Village in Taikkyi Township, yesterday morning.

Mayor U Ko Lay and wife Daw Khin Khin and families of the staff received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhana of Yebawthoung Monastery in Taikkyi Township. They donated provisions to the Sayadaw. Then, "soon" was offered to the Sayadaws. Afterwards, the mayor inspected reclamation
of 1,500 acres of land, cultivation of beans and pulses and water supply from Hline River to 100 acres of summer paddy of Kya-in Agriculture Project in Taungyat Zigon region and gave necessary instructions. The mayor also inspected Kyontahmyin duck breeding farm and left instructions.


Special appellate hands down sentences

YANGON 29 Dec- The Special Appellate of the Supreme Court (Yangon) comprising Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo and Supreme Court Justice Dr Tin Aung Aye, sitting at court room No 1 of the Supreme Court, this morning, passed six special civil appeal cases and five criminal special appeal cases and heard five special civil appeal cases under Section 7 of the Judiciary Law 2000.

Youth education training camp ends

YANGON 29 Dec - Camp-folding of the youth education training camp for the year 2000, sponsored by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, was held at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel this evening.

Present on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Central Executive Committee members, honorary patrons, members of the training board of trustees, youths and guests. Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented certificates to the trainees. CEC members Daw Khin Swe Nyunt, Daw Htay Htay and Dr Nwe Oo presented a water cooler for the MMCWA. Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe accepted it. Youths Maung Ngwe Moe Aung and Ma Zali Maw recounted their experiences at the course. Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe gave the concluding remarks.

Dagon Township MCWA holds baby show

YANGON 29 Dec- The baby show in commemoration of the 53rd Anniversary Independence Day was held in conjunction with the ceremony to honour wellwishers at Basic Education High School No 1 in Dagon Township this morning.

Chairperson of Dagon Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Daw Mi Mi Khin extended greetings and Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe gave a speech. Then, the chairperson of Dagon Township MCWA and officials presented certificates of honour to 25 wellwishers. Afterwards, Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and officials presented prizes to 25 babies and mothers including three twins. Next, the chairperson of Township MCWA gave the concluding remarks.
A total of 35 babies took part in the baby show.

Students present music and variety dances at National Theatre

YANGON 29 Dec- The music and variety dances of School Family Day for 2000-2001 academic year was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street at 2 p.m. today.

The aim of the music and variety dances are to turn out good sons and daughters who are imbued with patriotism, Union Spirit and strong moral the school family day celebration al character and are capable of preserving traditions, culture and national characters and to speed up efforts for implementation programmes by exhibiting achievements in the higher and basic education sectors. Present were directors-
general, deputy directors-general and officials of departments under the Ministry of Education, members of the leading committee for holding the music and variety dances, township education officers, school heads, students and people.

New generation and old students of Sangyoung Basic Education High School No 2, Dagon BEHS No 1, Kamayut BEHS No 2, Tamway BEHS No 4, Bahan BEHS No 2, Institute of Education Practising School, Latha BEHS No 2, Botahtaung BEHS No 6, Thakayta BEHS No 4, students from higher education, South Okkalapa BEHS No 2, Dagon BEMS No 1, Bahan BEPS No 1, South Okkalapa BEHS No 3, Lanmadaw BEHS No 1, Dagon BEHS No 2, Bahan BEPS No 3 and Botahtaung BEHS No 2 presented music and variety dances to the audience. The music and variety dances will be presented till 31 December beginning 2 p.m. daily.

Educative lectures on risk of smoking given in Shwepyitha Township

YANGON 29 Dec- Educative lectures on the risk of smoking were given at four Basic Education High Schools, three Basic Education Middle Schools and people's Hospital in Shwepyitha Township from 4
December to date. These lectures were organized by Township Information and Public Relations Department under the arrangement of Township Peace and Development Council in commemoration of
the presence of South East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame (SEAA Flame) in Myanmar. Township Health Officer Dr Daw Pyu Pyu, Staff Officer U Tin Htwe of township IPRD and teachers gave lectures on the risk of smoking. Altogether over 8,000 students and people attended the lectures.


(8) YCDC beat Defence 3-1 in first semi-final

YANGON 29 Dec- The first semi-final match of the Myanmar Olympic Committee chairman's Trophy Advanced Division Under-25 Soccer Tournament, organized by Myanmar Football Federation, was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this evening. YCDC beat Defence 3-1 in the match. Tint Naing Tun Thein of YCDC won the man of the match award. Finance & Revenue will play against Commerce in the second semi-final tomorrow evening.

USDA members of Menei hill region tour Yangon

YANGON 29 Dec- Members of Union Solidarity and Development Association of Menei hill region in Hopong Township, Shan State (South), accompanied by officials of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, visited Hlinethaya City of Industry this morning.

At Kanaung Hall of the city, the leader of the excursion group presented a commemorative pennant to the in-charge of the city project. Then, the USDA members visited Shweywethlay Garment Factory, Punhlaing Golf Course, FMI City and Aungzeya Bridge. Afterwards, they went to Myawady TV Station in Hmawby. Commandant of the station Lt-Col Chit Swe and officials conducted them round the station. Next, they visited USDA Training School at the Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby.

Then, they paid obeisance to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township and made donations for the Image. At 7 p.m., USDA Central Executive Committee member
Brig-Gen Pyi Sone hosted a dinner at the meeting hall on the fifth floor of the Ministry of Commerce in honour of the USDA members.

Also present at the dinner were USDA CEC members U Soe Tha and Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, department heads and officials. CEC member Brig-Gen Pyi Sone extended greetings. Then, the CEC member and the leader of the excursion group exchanged commemorative pennants. Later, the CEC member presented
prizes to the USDA members.

MPT to issue new postage stamp to mark 53rd Anniversary Independence Day

YANGON 29 Dec- Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications will issue a new K-two postage stamp to mark 53rd Anniversary Independence Day. The new postage stamp will be available at the posts offices in states and divisions beginning 9.30 am on 4 January 2001.

Anti-tobacco quiz held in Dagon Myothit (South) Township

YANGON 29 Dec - An anti-tobacco quiz commemorating the presence of the South East Asia Anti- Tobacco Flame was held at the gymnasium in Dagon Myothit (South) Township this morning. Officials of the Ministry of Health, district and township authorities and the township education officer of Dagon Myothit (South) Township supervised the quiz. Altogether 388 persons including students and members of NGOs took part in the quiz. Prizes will be given to winners at 1 p.m. on 30 January, and the anti-tobacco exhibition will remain open till 30 December.


(9) Marijuana possessor gets 30 years' imprisonment

YANGON 29 Dec- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Yangon Anti- Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Win Naing on Mindhamma Road in Ward 3 of
Mayangon Township at noon on 29 January 2000. The authorities seized 1.306 kilos of marijuana.Bayintnaung Police Station filed Win Naing, 35, son of U Hla Tun at the compound of the breeding farm
in Ward 3, Mayangon Township, under the Sections 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On 29 November, Yangon West District Court sentenced Win Naing to 5 years'
imprisonment under the Section 15 and 25 years' under the Section 19 (A) of the law to serve separately.

21 Labutta Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON 29 Dec- Twenty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division. Twenty-one members of Labutta Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Labutta Township Multiparty Democracy
General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
